This exciting MSc will provide you with: an understanding of broad scientific principles, experience of practical laboratory studies and strengthen the knowledge and methods required for cross disciplinary communication. Students will graduate with comprehensive experience and knowledge of One Health matters and generic expertise that are highly relevant to careers in research or industry, and that will enhance your ability to provide scientific advice on policy development and implementation that is particularly relevant to governments and NGOs. Our MSc Course: The One Health MSc is the latest addition to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and students will be taught by international experts from the School, the world famous Roslin Institute and from the wider University including its Centre for Population Health Sciences of the Medical School. You will become part of The Easter Bush Research Consortium that in addition to the University includes the Moredun Research Institute and SAC and you will have the advantage of working and studying with the largest grouping for agricultural and veterinary related research and education in UK.

Course Structure The course has two elements: (1) A taught component (90 credits) (2) The dissertation project (90 credits). The taught course is delivered using a blend of lectures, seminars, guided practical studies and independent research. The course will be based primarily at the new £42 million Teaching building for the Dick Vet, and the new £61 million building of the Roslin Institute both at the University’s campus at Easter Bush. You will mix with other students attending the School’s MScs in: Animal Biosciences, Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare and have the opportunity to be taught with students of the School of Medicine‘s Masters in Public Health. In the latter part of the taught course innovative learning techniques will be used to present problem solving exercises for you. The research component aims to develop your skills and knowledge in a specific area of science. The student will prepare a research proposal based on offered laboratory (or bioinformatics) project and will carry out the work under the supervision of a member of EBRC staff. Full or partial scholarships for the bench fees may be available (on a competitive basis). The research will use techniques including but not limited to those experienced in the first part of the course. You will work as an independent researcher and interact with scientists and other post-graduate students as a full member of their group. You will present findings at laboratory meetings and will prepare a final dissertation.

Study offers clues on memory puzzle Scientists have shed light on why it is easier to learn about things related to what we know than to learn about unfamiliar things. The team says this is a paradox, as very different things are arguably more novel, yet adding to what we already know is so much easier. Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Tokyo have found that building on existing knowledge activates a key set of genes in the brain. These ‘plasticity’ genes do not respond so well to subjects about which we know very little, making it harder for us to form new memories about unfamiliar topics. Read More
