Welcome, This e-Zine is designed for students who have an offer with the University of Edinburgh-College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, to provide you with the latest College updates as well as further details on your journey to the University.
Hello, Not long now until you join us for your postgraduate studies. The city has been heaving with tourists here at the world-famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe. As the tourist numbers dwindle in early September, Edinburgh starts to come alive in a different way as thousands of students descend on the city! Our postgraduate team have been working very hard in preparation for your arrival. We hope your own preparations are coming along well, but if you need any further assistance, please let us know. This month’s e-zine includes updates on the University’s new Student Welcome Guides, as well as information on joining the University and induction. Latest News Record-breaking year in research The University has attracted record levels of investment in its pioneering research work. Figures for the last 12 months show that the University was awarded ÂŁ250 million to fund its research in 2011/12, 37 per cent more than the ÂŁ183 million received in 2010/11. The amount is a record for any Scottish university, beating the ÂŁ249 million earned by Edinburgh in 2008/09. (Read More)
Nanofibre health risk quantified Health risks posed to people who work with tiny fibres used in manufacturing industries could be reduced, thanks to new research. Research into the health risks posed by nanofibres - used to strengthen objects from tennis rackets to airplane wings - has pinpointed the lengths at which these fibres are harmful to the lungs. Download College and University Apps!
There are two free apps that you should download to your smartphone, if you have one, before you join us in September: •
The College App - UoE CMVM - provides applicants with useful information such as video guidance on accepting offers, and access to accommodation links, latest College news, student blogs, Facebook groups etc. The App is currently available for iPhone and iPad users only, but if successful will be rolled out to other platforms. We will be using the App to keep you updated on important updates leading up to matriculation and enrolment. So please remember to 'accept' the push notification request once you've downloaded it.

The University App – U@Ed – is designed for current or new students and is available on both iOS and Android platforms. Students can view courses, notices, events, use the Campus Maps, check library records and financial details. It also features a Friend Finder so that you can see where your friends are on the campus, making it easier to catch up with people on the move.

Joining Instructions Hopefully you’ll have received our detailed Joining Instructions by email recently. We’ve recently posted details of individual programme induction sessions so make sure you visit the College website for full details. Registration and matriculation: How to enrol at the University and information about your University card.
Programme specific inductions: Check the website to see if your Masters programme is running a programme induction. You may also have had an email from the programme director. Advice for international students: The website details information on visas, police registration and English language testing. Tuition fees and costs: Helpful information on paying your fees.
Welcome Guides The University has created a number of Welcome Guides for new students – essential reading if you’re joining us in Edinburgh for the first time! The Postgraduate Welcome Guide provides lots of useful information to help you prepare for your studies in September, including a checklist to ensure that you make all the necessary preparations.
The International Arrival Guide is a practical guide to help students from overseas in their first week in Edinburgh. Features info on everything from bank accounts to international students’ orientation day.
Pre-arrival virtual sessions We’re holding a Virtual Drop-in session for all offer-holders on Weds 5 September 15:00 BST. Drop in online and ask the College Postgraduate Office any questions you may have before you start your programme. In addition to the College session, there are a few University sessions such as ‘How to pay your fees’ (11:00 BST) and ‘Welcoming International Students’ (15:00 BST).

I wish I had known…. Edinburgh University Students Associaion (EUSA) has set up an open group on Facebook - ‘I wish I had known’ where students can leave tips for others. Join the group for sage advice from those who’ve already studied here! “I wish I had known about the all fantastic resources at the Institute for Academic Development.”

Welcome to Edinburgh! Edinburgh has regularly been voted one of the most desirable places to live in the world. Our city mixes architectural beauty and history with a lively, fun environment. It offers an exciting array of entertainment, history, culture and sport, with the lush Scottish countryside and coastline just a few miles away. It is a safe and prosperous city, with an abundance of parks and green spaces for recreation and reflection. The city centre also plays host to a carnival atmosphere every August, when the world-famous Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe takes over the town.
