Canada’s first Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded to alumnus Richard Taylor in 1990. The Canadian Maple Leaf flag, designed by alumnus George Stanley! Canadian leadership — alumnus Joe Clark is a former Prime Minister of Canada and was the youngest person ever to take on this role. Great video games such as Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies! PopCap Games was co-founded by UAlberta alumnus Jason Kapalka. Discovering an asteroid and naming it after UAlberta! Alumnus Andrew Lowe named the asteroid he discovered “UofAlberta”— it’s located between Mars and Jupiter. The invention of early sonar in 1917 by faculty member Dr. Richard Boyle. Canada’s first successful open-heart surgery, performed in 1956 by faculty member Dr. John Callaghan. The life-saving Hepatitis B treatment, Heptovir, developed and administered for the first time in 1998 by faculty member Dr. Lorne Tyrrel.

The co-discovery of insulin in 1922 by faculty member Dr. James Collip, who worked with Frederick Banting, Charles Best, and John MacLeod. Developing a new vaccine to combat Hepatitis C – UAlberta researcher Dr. Michael Houghton discovered the vaccine, which could eventually be used to fight all strains of the disease.

Music alum Jim Raycroft is an accomplished singer, conductor and musician, having sung with the Los Angeles Opera and performed all over the world. He has sung for the President of the United States, the Queen of England and even appeared on the Grammys and in the Hollywood film the Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End. W W W. He is known for creating beautiful evening gowns using the Tartan pattern. One of his Tartan gowns is housed at the New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art! Meal Plans + Food Options Lister Centre offers a meal plan. This means that you can focus on your classes and making friends instead of cooking and washing dishes. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan are among the many options available each day at the Lister Market. If you don’t have a meal plan through your residence, you can still purchase food in your residence and around campus. There are numerous restaurants on and close to campus that offer a variety of different cultural cuisines, including halal food.

Incoming and first-year exchange students are guaranteed a space in residence if they complete their housing application by April 30. You can complete your pre-professional year at UAlberta. Most undergraduate programs can be entered directly from high school, but some require at least one year of pre-professional study before you can apply. You can take all of your pre-professional courses at UAlberta.

The Bridging Program (BP) is for excellent students who meet all of UAlberta’s academic criteria but still need to improve their English skills in order to enter a degree program.

Students can take English language courses at UAlberta and earn academic credit at the same time. After you complete the BP successfully, you can continue as a full-time undergraduate student.

FACULTY OF MEDICINE & DENTISTRY (Limited Enrollment for International Students) The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry trains physicians, researchers in the basic and clinical sciences, dentists, dental hygienists, and medical laboratory scientists for Alberta, Canada, and the world. There is an outstanding environment covering the spectrum of health research, with scientists who are highly sought after by research centres in North America and Europe. Admission to the DDS and Dental Hygiene programs is limited. 85% of the places in the program are reserved for Alberta residents, five percent for international students and ten percent for non-Albertan Canadians. 3. WAIT TO RECEIVE YOUR UALBERTA EMAIL + I.D.s. If you apply online, you will receive important information from UAlberta by e-mail within 48 hours of submitting your application.

You will receive: »» Your 7-digit ID number (include this with any correspondence with the university). »» Your Campus Computing ID (CCID) and password, which you will use to access Bear Tracks, where you can track the status of your application for admission at www.beartracks.ualberta.ca »» Login information for your UAlberta webmail account. This is your personal e-mail account with the University. The University will be sending important notifications to you on this e-mail account. You are required to activate this e-mail account as soon as possible and check it regularly.

4. SUBMIT ANY REMAINING DOCUMENTS FOR ADMISSION CONSIDERATION. your entire academic record (high school and post-secondary). For the current year in progress, you must submit all the transcripts up to and including: first semester results; second semester registration for the institution you are currently attending; final transcripts for any other institutions previously attended; and detailed course descriptions of each course. You can accept your offer of admission in your Beartracks account; at this time you will also be required to provide a non-refundable CD $500 tuition deposit, which will be credited towards your final tuition amount.

7. APPLY TO LIVE ON-CAMPUS. All international students who apply for housing before April 30, 2017 are guaranteed a space in one of our residences for their first year. This application is separate from your application to study at UAlberta. If you have a preference for a particular residence community (page 17), make sure you apply as early as possible, starting October 1, 2016. You can submit your housing application once you have applied for admission and obtained your 7-digit UAlberta student ID number. You can apply online at www.ualberta.ca/residences There is a CAD $25 application fee for housing.

8. APPLY FOR YOUR STUDY PERMIT. In order to study in Canada, you will need a study permit. Application processing time can take up to three months or more. We encourage you to apply for your study permit well in advance of your program start date. You can use your letter of Admission to start your study permit application.
