PRESIDENT ’S REPORT O N T H E UNIVERSIT Y O F

CINCINNATI

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION Trending highlights the array of activities and outcomes at the University of Cincinnati, one of the nation’s top public research universities. Here you will see UC collaborating with business and community, expanding the boundaries of art and ideas, applying technology to society’s needs, and more. UC has made great strides in recent years, and Trending demonstrates how we have accelerated our advancement with focused, ambitious, and achievable goals. ON THE COVER The Vontz Center for Molecular Studies, designed by Frank Gehry, opened as the gateway to the UC Academic Health Center in September 1999. The Vontz Center has been included among the “most amazing examples of college architecture” by the website topcollegesonline.org. Gehry’s first all-brick building, the Vontz Center stands as a 360-degree sculpture, set off by a beautiful green space of sculpted grassy mounds and terraces. To many who work at and visit the Academic Health Center, this building represents the entrepreneurial spirit at the University of Cincinnati—encouraging faculty and staff to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

American higher education didn’t follow its way to world-envy status.

We blazed a trail. And it’s time to do it again.

— President Santa J. Ono (Columbus Dispatch)

“In the physical world, they’re at UC.

In the virtual world, they’re at P&G.” — Don Brett, Procter & Gamble

UC was one of just seven organizations

that earned Procter & Gamble’s Connect+Develop Public/Private Partnership award. The award encourages innovation and collaboration in driving business results, and was given to UC in recognition of its Simulation Center, a collaborative effort since 2008 between P&G and the university. The center’s collaborative teams of engineers and students have worked on dozens of P&G projects, giving P&G access to solutions and talent, while providing students opportunities to work on real-time projects.

“Welcome to Cincinnati,

center of the consumer marketing universe.” — Ad Age

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY ONE new private economic development projects were identified by the Cincinnati USA Partnership for Economic Development in 2012. The initiative, supported by the University of Cincinnati, promotes the city’s emerging talent pool—graduates of UC and other local schools—as a primary benefit to businesses adding jobs, making investments, or expanding. Cincinnati’s Minority Business Accelerator (MBA), the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s hallmark economic-development initiative focused on growing sizeable minority firms, had many reasons to celebrate in 2012. In addition to a new record of spending by local corporations and community organizations, average revenue of MBA portfolio firms reached $29 million and the total number of firm employees increased to 3,360. Since its inception in 2003, the MBA has created 1,800 jobs in Cincinnati.

With nearly 39,000 branding-related jobs in the city and 60,000 in the region, Cincinnati boasts the highest per-capita concentration of branding professionals in the world. The city is one of the few municipalities anywhere offering incentives to lure or keep marketing-related companies. Jobs in branding, consumer marketing and retail locally are growing at about 16 percent annually, compared to less than 4 percent nationally. Underscoring that presence, dunnhumbyUSA and the American Advertising Federation Cincinnati held D2 Cincinnati, a major digital marketing conference in September at the Horseshoe Casino.

Cincinnati’s Brandhub • The State of Ohio designated Cincinnati as a Hub of Innovation and Opportunity in Consumer Marketing in 2010. • UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning is consistently ranked in the top tier of American and international design schools. • UC graduates 650 students each year with degrees in arts and media, communication and journalism, design and applied arts, information science, marketing and statistics. • The concept of brand management can be traced to a 1931 memo from P&G President Neil McElroy. • Cincinnati’s array of branding and marketing firms includes Landor Associates, LPK, Possible Worldwide, dunnhumbyUSA, Rockfish Interactive, Nielsen Co., and Burke Inc.

“The Cincinnati USA region is firing on all cylinders. From our urban core to our surrounding communities, business growth is everywhere.” — Cincinnati USA Partnership 13 #HOTTESTCOLLEGEINAMERICA

“It’s great to see when your sketch on paper becomes a

real, materialized design.” — Reuben Alt, Architecture Student

The future of disaster shelters is flat. Or at least

that’s the vision of faculty and students in the University of Cincinnati’s architecture program. They’ve designed an eight-foot tall, 18-foot-long shelter made of a plywood frame that could be covered in a shrink-wrap vinyl membrane for water proofing. Most importantly, it could be delivered and assembled by an ordinary family using readily available tools.

U N I V E R S I T Y O F C I N C I N N AT I

14

Because it can be packed flat, 25 of these shelters could fit on the bed of a standard tractor trailer of 53 feet in length. The design was accepted for exhibit at the prestigious International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which was held in May 2013 in New York City.

“University of Cincinnati College of Medicine scientists led the first multicenter t-PA studies in the United States and established a protocol for quick diagnosis and treatment for stroke victims.” — Association of American Medical Colleges

Joseph Broderick, co-founder of what is now the UC Stroke Team, the first regional stroke team in the United States, was among the UC researchers who played a leading role in developing and testing the clot-busting drug tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, to treat acute ischemic stroke. Intravenous tPA is the only FDA-approved treatment for stroke caused by a blood clot. Broderick has been a member of the UC College of Medicine faculty since 1987 and department chair since 2000. In addition, he serves as research director of the UC Neuroscience Institute and director of UC’s Cerebrovascular Research Program. Broderick was recently honored with the William Howard Taft Medal for Notable Achievement.

“10 College Presidents on Twitter Who Are Doing it Right”

Transforming the way UC operates, President Ono’s open

According to Jeff Neff of Ad Age, Ono is “perhaps the best chiefexec Tweeter I’ve seen yet… relevant…sincere, often funny.” Transparent, engaging, authentic and innovative, Ono’s deceptively folksy style belies a very purposeful four-step communication strategy: learning, conversation, support, and innovation.

“Private support has transformed UC into a world-class institution.”

A Billion and Beyond

— Rod Grabowski, President, UC Foundation

The University of Cincinnati has surpassed its most ambitious goal: raise $1 billion by the end of UC’s Proudly Cincinnati campaign and secure more than 100,000 individual donors in the process. UC is now in the company of only two percent of the nation’s public colleges and universities that have done the same in a single campaign. More important, the impact of this private support will be felt on UC’s campus for generations to come. • 10,697 students who graduated since the start of the campaign received scholarships. • 42,529 scholarships have been awarded since the start of the campaign. • More than $36,000,000 has been donated to create new scholarship funds. • Created 23 new endowed chairs.
