Since 2010, UC’s ranking in the magazine’s influential America’s Best Colleges Guide has jumped 17 spots— among the greatest leaps by any university. UC’s rise in the rankings was spurred by improved graduation rates, improved retention of firstyear students, and higher levels of donations from alumni. For the sixth year in a row, the University of Cincinnati is listed among the best institutions for an undergraduate education

CCM boasts nearly 1,000 events annually, ranging from solo recitals to fully-staged opera and musical theater productions. CCM’s musical theater program is widely considered one of the best in the country. This year the program will audition 643 prospective students for 18 available spots, a less than 3 percent acceptance rate. CCM is home to an innovative, highly-regarded arts administration program that offers a dual MA/MBA degree. “Design isn’t a frivolous issue. It’s a
quality of life issue.”
— Student Chas Wiederhold Real-world is a core focus for all UC’s academic
programs, perhaps nowhere more evident than in UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). In 2012, DAAP’s programs—once again—pulled rank. The DesignIntelligence survey of employers ranked UC’s industrial design program first in the nation for the second year in a row. UC’s undergraduate interior design program ranked second and the graduate architecture program ranked 10th. For over a decade, UC’s
design programs have been ranked among the best in the US every year by DesignIntelligence. Business Insider surveyed art directors, product designers and others, asking “Which school is best suited to get you the design job you want?” Among the resulting list of the world’s 25 top design programs, DAAP placed third:
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology 2. Rhode Island School of Design 3. University of Cincinnati 4. Carnegie Mellon University 5. Parsons The New School of Design 6. Pratt Institute

UC invented co-op in 1906. UC’s Division of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning (ProPEL) manages the university’s cooperative education program, which for over 100 years has provided students with the opportunity to alternate full-time studies with paid work assignments. Recently, the division expanded to include the full spectrum of first-hand experience programs—academic internships, service learning and undergraduate research. Each semester, almost 5,000 UC students can be found around the globe “working their tails off—and loving every minute of it.”

for both local and international firms, UC’s Live Well Collaborative teams university students and faculty with companies seeking new and improved products for target markets aged 50 and over. Pioneering private-sector members of the collaborative have included Procter & Gamble, Boeing, Hill-Rom, CitiGroup and General Mills. Founded in 2007, the Live Well Collaborative is based on P&G’s Connect+Develop open-innovation model, where P&G encourages the co-creation of products with the best innovators outside the organization.

Live Well builds upon UC’s national and international reputation as a leader in experiential learning. Most Live Well-produced innovations are, for the moment, confidential. However, one project made public involves a student-created series of hospital gown prototypes, designed to better meet the needs of both patients and care-givers.
Academic Health Center Located just east of the university’s main campus, the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center (AHC) manages $301 million in research dollars and enrolls over 7,000 students in four colleges. The College of Medicine, founded in 1819, is the second-oldest public medical school in the nation. The James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy (1850) graduates 100 percent of its PharmD students with real-life pharmacy experience gained in every semester. The College of Nursing (1889) stands among the first colleges in the world to offer a BSN and an MSN. The College of Allied Health Sciences (1998) offers a first-ofits-kind, joint MS-MD program combining nutrition and medicine. The AHC is enhanced by a close collaboration with UC Health, which includes five facilities and the region’s only Level 1 trauma center.

“Most competitive city in the United States.” — KPMG
Cincinnati has more FORTUNE 500 companies per million residents than New York, Boston, Chicago or Los Angeles, and is the home of many of the most recognized and respected brands in the world. The region counts eight Fortune 500 headquarters, with seven more in the Fortune 1000. Cincinnati is not only among the best places for these companies to do business; it’s also one of the best places to live. Named “A Top-10 Value City” by Kiplinger magazine, Cincinnati’s vibrant economy, low cost of living and great amenities helps companies retain current employees and recruit new ones.

Moving discoveries toward commercialization is
a key goal of the Technology Accelerator, created at UC in early 2012. The accelerator identifies promising, early stage technologies, determines viable start-up company opportunities and develops strategies to bring them to market.
Typical of UC’s unique approach to education—combining the pragmatic application of knowledge with rigorous scholarship—the accelerator’s leaders identify promising UC technologies through a competitive application process. After assessing their potential, gap funding or preseed awards start the process toward commercialization.
