Evidence of consumed shellfish, sea urchin and butchered giraffe suggests a higher-than-expected standard of living among Pompeii’s middle and lower classes. Discovered by faculty in UC’s top-ranked Department of Classics, the findings are part of ongoing, groundbreaking research on life in the doomed city. Adopting the use of iPads in the excavations, UC faculty members are revolutionizing the precise recording of history at Pompeii. The iPad research experiment has

been featured on the National Geographic Channel as well as on Apple’s website. The researchers found that the handheld computers and their ability to digitally record and immediately communicate information had many advantages over a centuries-honed tradition of archaeological recording on paper.

N’deye Ba is accustomed to achieving the impossible. Originally from Senegal, Africa, her parents moved to the United States so that she and her siblings would have a better life. She learned English while attending elementary school (her first languages are French and

Wolof ). And Ba (pictured at right) is the first student to graduate after living in UC’s Gen-1 Theme House, which supports the success of firstgeneration college students. Since opening in 2008, the Gen-1 Theme House has served more than 100 first-generation, Pell-granteligible students. Because those students are considered at high risk for dropping out, UC’s Gen-1 house provides a 24/7 structured living and learning environment plus support services, such as mentoring, tutoring, professional counseling and monitoring of academic performance and social activities.

The Partner for Achieving School Success (PASS) center in the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) works to promote equality by providing full access to opportunities that empower youth. In addition to the Gen-1 House, initiatives include the federally-funded GEARUP Scores partnership, which serves 4,700 students in Cincinnati Public Schools, and the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative supporting college-bound youths who age out of foster care.

Pulling four G’s, head first. That’s how American athlete Matt Antoine raced to a bronze medal finish in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. And he did it using a new and improved skeleton sled with ties to the Structural Dynamics Research Lab in UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). Assistant Professor Grant Schaffner (pictured at right) led the design team for the ProtoStar V5 sled in collaboration with CEAS, ProtoStar Engineering, Machintek Corporation, deBotech Inc, and Carpenter Technology. Schaffner traveled to Russia for the competition. Last fall, the sled also earned gold and bronze medals in World Cup competition.

UC’S NEW Neil Armstrong Space Science Institute lifted off with an important research partnership with NASA’s Ames Research Center. The institute was unveiled along with a memorial honoring the life of Armstrong, who taught at UC from 1971 to 1979. The Neil Armstrong Space Science Institute will: • Promote interdisciplinary spacebased research and serve as a repository of knowledge and expertise. • Lead educational disciplines related to space science and engineering and encourage students to pursue degrees in those areas. • Manage and preserve space-related research data. Getting to the hospital quickly can mean the difference between life and death. UC Health Air Care & Mobile Care, which transports over a thousand patients by helicopter each year, has been named the Program of the Year by the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS). This is the industry’s top award for rotor wing and ground medical transport programs. In addition to the patients who are transported by air, each year the mobile care unit provides ground transportation for 10,000 patients in the region.

Nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance in the title role, UC alumna Ashley Brown and the cast of “Mary Poppins” closed after an impressive six-and-a-half-year run. Over the years since the show opened in 2006, five other graduates of UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) appeared in the cast. The well-loved Broadway musical was seen by nearly 4 million audience members over the course of more than 2,600 performances. CCM is internationally recognized as one of the leading conservatories of performing arts and electronic media, with roots dating back to 1867.

Safe drinking water, construction of a new school, teacher development and nutrition education are just some of the initiatives of UC’s university-wide service learning program in Tanzania. University of Cincinnati has a long and varied history with the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa ranging from scholarly collaborations and institutional agreements to international faculty exchanges and faculty-led service learning. Faculty in Africana Studies are active in Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal and Tanzania on projects involving languages, immigration and microcredit participation.

The Uptown area, an economic powerhouse of neighborhoods surrounding UC’s campus, has added 609 residential housing units, 862,000 square feet of office space and 105,000 square feet of retail space. The unique and lively area represents the city’s second-largest employment center. Development is coordinated through the Uptown Consortium, of which UC is a founding partner. Consortium members employ more than 50,000 people and produce an annual economic impact of over $3 billion. The Uptown Consortium recently received a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Setting a school record for total offense, the 2013 Bearcats football team posted nine wins for the sixth time in seven seasons and played in their seventh bowl game over the past eight years. Since 2007, UC has won 66 football games and four conference championships, made six bowl appearances, including a pair of Bowl Championship Series games, and continually recruited top student-athletes to the university. In men’s basketball, UC played in its 28th NCAA Tournament in 2014. In December 2013, UC broke ground on a major expansion to add premium seating to historic Nippert Stadium. The men’s basketball team started the 2013-14 season 20-2, including a school-record 17-straight wins inside Fifth Third Arena. Led by Head Coach Mick Cronin who earned his 150th career win at UC this season, the Bearcats have been ranked as high as No. 7 nationally and are headed to their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Senior guard Sean Kilpatrick became the second UC men’s basketball student-athlete all-time to eclipse the 2,000-point barrier, joining the great Oscar Robertson.

ON THE COVER The “Super Twister” sculpture glows as the sun sets in front of the CARE/Crawley Building at UC’s Academic Health Center campus. CARE/ Crawley opened in August 2008 in a Medical Sciences Building renovation project and was designed by signature architect Erik Sueberkrop, a 1972 graduate of UC’s topranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. The sculpture’s ribbons of brushed aluminum wrap around each other and according to the artist, Alice Aycock, create a sense of movement and excitement symbolic of the whirlwind of intellectual energy, inquiry and scientific innovation that takes place inside the building. The artwork was created under the state of Ohio’s Percent for Art legislation, which has funded more than 100 pieces at public buildings since 1990.
