Research Impact Update
Land Acknowledgement
We offer our gratitude to the lands on which the University of Guelph campuses are situated and the Indigenous ancestors who have inhabited these lands for centuries. We recognize that our campuses are located on the lands of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum and we offer our respect to the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, Six Nations of the Grand River and the diverse communities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples who now reside on these lands. We also recognize that our educational and research enterprises occur on Indigenous lands and we endeavour to ensure that our activities honour and respect Indigenous peoples.
We recognize that acknowledging the land we are on and Indigenous peoples’ relationship with the land is a starting point. As a school of business and economics, we recognize the role business, research, and education have had, and continue to have in the systemic mistreatment and harm of Indigenous peoples, communities, cultures, and lands. It is our responsibility and understanding that Lang needs to play a meaningful role in addressing the ongoing damage of colonization and developing a better future for all peoples. The 94 Calls to Action for Truth and Reconciliation and Bi-Naagwad | It Comes Into View, U of G’s Indigenous Initiatives Strategy provide us with opportunities to further reflect on the role we as educators and researchers can and should have towards collective action. We recognize there is significant work to be done to learn and unlearn in order to build trust, community, and partnership. Our strategic plan aims to demonstrate our commitment, as well as the need for action and provide an opportunity for the Lang community to engage in their own personal journey of reflection, reconciliation, and action.
Message from the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies
On behalf of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, I am pleased to present the 2023 Research Impact Update, which highlights the accomplishments of Lang’s researchers over the past year, since the release of the Lang Research Report (2021-2022). It provides a streamlined overview of Lang’s research performance and successes in 2023. This reflects our revised research reporting strategy, which involves detailed biennial reports that include features and stories about our researchers and their work, coupled with brief research updates in nonreport years.
2023 was a productive year for Lang’s research community, which saw the publication of over 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and over 30 new external grants. We welcomed ten new tenure-track scholars to the Lang school and granted PhDs to 12 emerging scholars. Dr. Ann Pegoraro, Lang Chair in Sport Management and Director of the International Institute for Sport Business Leadership (IISBL) celebrated the IISBL’s fifth anniversary with a grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund, which will fund ‘Sportacle,’ a cutting-edge sport analytics platform that will house big data, provide data analysis and data visualization.
2023 also saw the launch of Lang’s 2023-2028 Strategic Research Plan, which outlines Lang’s research goals and priorities for the next five years. At the heart of the plan lies our commitment to high-quality and impactful research, partnership and collaboration and developing the research leaders of the future. We are guided by Lang’s research mission to generate and mobilize excellent research that has a positive impact on business as a force for good®. The activities and outputs described in this report are strong evidence of our commitment to that mission.
