Every Student Arrives at the University of Louisville With a Different Story Valedictorians from rural Kentucky towns. First-generation college students from right here in Louisville. Military veterans just returning from the front and choosing their next paths in life. Newcomers to the United States from the other side of the world. Within the University of Louisville Division of Student Affairs, we strive to offer a touchpoint for every one of our more than 22,000 students. Our departments include housing, student involvement, intramural sports, counseling, career development and more. We’re here to support students at each stage of their academic development from new student to graduate and beyond. We work to help these students achieve both inside and outside the classroom. We challenge and support them as they take their textbook lessons and apply them to real life. We encourage our students to become involved in the world around them so they can have a positive impact on the future. We know our efforts are meaningful. Students who are engaged in campus life and activity are proven to do better in the classroom and become college graduates. Student Affairs is doing more every day to support this mission. We’re a division constantly undergoing change and developing new programs and methods to connect with students to help them reach their goals. Take a moment to learn more about our division and how we work with students to achieve success.

Student Engagement Student Affairs strives to support a vibrant campus life at UofL. That mission includes encouraging student participation in activities and groups that will enrich their student experience.

Housing and Residence Life louisville.edu/housing More than 5,000 UofL students, including 70 percent of all first-year students, live on our main campus, choosing from a range of housing options that include traditional residence halls, suites and apartments. Each facility has extended wireless Internet coverage and rooms that are big enough for students to store their stuff, study and entertain their friends. But we bring more than rooms to the campus life experience. Personal development and learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Housing and Residence Life staff promote healthy lifestyles and provide programs that facilitate student engagement and enhance a student’s learning experience. Living-learning and themed communities—focused on common fields of study or interests—help students build relationships and community with other students. We help students develop leadership skills as firstyear mentoring leaders and hall government leaders. Upperclassmen can apply for work as resident assistants, desk staff and facility assistants to develop as responsible leaders, apply knowledge they gained in the classroom—as well as to earn money. Because campus life is an integral part of a successful university career, we can now house more than 32 percent of the student body in university residence halls or those we develop with affiliated partners.

More than 5,000 UofL students, including

70%

of all first-year students, live on our main campus.

Student Involvement and Student Activities Center louisville.edu/studentinvolvement Through the Office of Student Involvement, staff work side-by-side with students to create and enhance opportunities for them to find their place at UofL. Staff encourage students to take the knowledge and skills they acquire in the classroom and apply them to cultural, social and educational programs. We offer the groups space to work and play in our Student Activities Center (SAC) and Red Barn. The SAC has more than 1.5 million visitors each year and hosts 8,000 meetings. Here’s how we do it. Student Clubs and Organizations We offer more than 400 student organizations, each covering an array of interests—fencing, musical theater, tai chi, etc. Our staff serves as consultants to these groups, helping student leaders plan, organize and lead their groups. We also support students in forming new groups as students’ interests change and grow. Fraternity and Sorority Life Fraternity and Sorority Life is a popular activity at the university—an opportunity for some of our best and brightest students to gather to build lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, earn scholarships, perform community service and network for professional opportunities. UofL’s Fraternity and Sorority Life has witnessed record growth in recent years, with 10 percent of the undergraduate population affiliated with one of our 30 chapters. Being in a fraternity or sorority also has a significant impact on students’ academic success. Students involved in fraternities and sororities graduate at an average rate of 14 percent higher than non-fraternity/sorority students. Off Campus Student Services Not every student chooses to live on campus. We ensure that those students are still involved in the campus experience. Whether students are enrolling in one class or are embarking on a new career, the staff provide a friendly, supportive environment where adult and commuter More than students may come for information, advocacy or people annually attend a place to study or relax. We also offer events and events sponsored by the resources specific to their individual experience. Office of Student Involvement.

Sports are huge in Kentucky, but it’s not limited to cheering on our favorite teams. The Department of Intramural and Recreational Sports offers club sports and fitness opportunities for students. Last year, more than 9,500 people participated in 41 different intramural sports programs. There were also 435,000 visits to the gym at the Swain Student Activities Center and 37,000 visits to the game room.

The number and level of participation will further increase in fall 2013 when the new Student Recreation Center opens. The 128,000 squarefoot building will allow the department to increase its offerings across the board—sports clubs, recreation and fitness. Amenities in the new facility will include an exercise and weight facility, six basketball courts, multi-activity court for indoor soccer and floor hockey, racquetball courts, fitness studios, jogging track, fitness lab, classrooms and a gaming area. “Throughout my four years at UofL, the Engage Lead Serve Office has nourished my desire to engage with the community. From the first service project I ever organized in the Freshman LEAD Program, to the 400-hour service term I completed at Kentucky Refugee Ministries, and as an intern in the office, I have loved how this office has given me opportunities to connect with people outside the campus community. SOUL is another great program that has provided me the sustenance that comes from exploring smaller service opportunities at diverse non-profits.” ~Annie Muller French, English and Humanities Major

“I am so glad I had the opportunity to get involved with the Student Activities Board here at the University of Louisville. This organization challenged my strengths and leadership qualities in a way I could never imagine. It also helped me see that there was an opportunity for students to shape the overall college experience for their peers.” ~Elizabeth Hammond Communication Major

“Since becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, I have had the privilege of being among the most diverse, intelligent, accomplished and selfless men I have ever met. Alpha has helped me develop strong organizational and leadership abilities. The pride that I have for the history and mission of Alpha is unbounded and I have appreciated the opportunities presented to serve my campus, community and the world.”

“My experience as a resident assistant (RA) has been one of the most rewarding experiences at the university. Being an RA, I am given the chance to impact the lives of many students. I help build a community within the residence hall and make UofL feel like their new home! Through my job, I have learned how to effectively communicate with students from very different backgrounds. I have also become a more responsible and engaged student leader as a result of my experience as an RA.”

A message from the Vice President of Student Affairs There’s a quote from the American poet Robert Frost that perhaps symbolizes what we in Student Affairs do. “I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” Every day on our campus, we work to awaken each of our 22,000 students, helping them find their interests, passions, skill sets and goals. With their array of backgrounds and personalities, it can be challenging to pinpoint the one thing they connect with. Maybe they find their passion in their classroom skills, their commitment to service and helping others or their natural ability to lead. We work side-by-side with them to find the thing they want to do, the thing that makes them work harder and do better as they approach the next stage in their life. And when it happens, when that light bulb finally goes off for each student, we know we’ve done our job. For a student affairs practitioner, that moment is the most rewarding experience in the world. As we continue to work to improve and expand our unit, we’ll focus on inspiring a vibrant campus life and engaged student body, celebrating tradition and creating a sense of purpose among our students, enhancing our services and transforming theory into practice to support student learning. Our 80 staff members do an amazing job. I encourage you to join us in these efforts. After all, every day is a new and exciting challenge. Share your thoughts and ideas or let us know if we can be of assistance to you. Call us at 502-852-6933 or email us at vpsa@louisville.edu.
