George Howe Awarded “Citizen of the Year” Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held their Achievement Week Founders Banquet and Dinner Dance on November 19, 2010 where Undergraduate Chapter Omega Psi Phi president, Steven Edwards presented George Howe with the “Citizen of the Year” award. 5. Two Winners of the 2010 Parent of the Year Award More than 40 students took the time to nominate their parent for the 2010 Parent of the Year Award. The Dean of Students Office hosted a program on the Saturday of Homecoming to recognize all of the nominees. The committee had a difficult time deciding on the winner, so for the first time two parents received the award. This year’s recipients were Patrick John Hughes and Greg Cribbet. Each father received a plaque and a copy of his son’s nomination letter. Tim Cribbet nominated his father, Greg, for being his longtime champion. In his nomination letter, Tim explained that he was born three months premature and suffered a brain injury. Doctors told his parents that he had a 5 percent chance of survival. “Anyone facing those overwhelming challenges must have someone in their corner that will fight for their life. Fortunately for me, that someone is my father,” Tim wrote. Greg made sure that his son had access to everything he needed to succeed—such as special water therapy classes—and spent every hour possible helping him
learn to walk. When Tim started elementary school, Greg encouraged and supported his efforts to play golf. When Tim wanted to manage his high school’s football team, Greg transported him to every game and practice. Since Greg retired nine years ago, he has made his son’s education his first priority. Recently, the family relocated from Columbus, Ohio, so Tim could finish a degree in sport administration at UofL. “He has been a source of physical and mental motivation, a tireless advocate, sacrificed hours of his retirement and his life to invest in ‘my’ future, and all with an unconditional love that defies mere explanation,” Tim wrote. Greg said at the award presentation that Tim has been an inspiration to him. His son, he said, is driven to get an education, and because of that drive, he has done everything he can to help. “You want your child to have every opportunity,” Greg said. “That’s the job of the parent.” Patrick Henry Hughes is blind. He nominated his father, Patrick John Hughes, who pushes his chair so the accomplished musician can be in the marching band. The elder Hughes also attends class with Patrick Henry each day to help him with visual cues. Wrote Patrick Henry in his nomination letter: “People are always saying they admire him for the ‘sacrifices’ he makes, but he will tell them what he does is not a sacrifice but a blessing to be able to spend so much time with his son. Despite what he may say, I believe what he does is a sacrifice.” “Obviously, I’m honored that my son would take the time to nominate me for this award,” Patrick John said at the ceremony. “It’s an honor to be here today with these other families.” The father said he enjoys his second go-around at college with Patrick Henry and that he might be learning more attending class with his son than he did as a student. “He’s being the kind of student I wish I would have been,” Patrick John said. Later on in the day of the recognition ceremony, Patrick John Hughes was on the football field, pushing his son’s wheelchair as part of the UofL Marching Band. 3

8. Intramural Department Hosts State Conference
For their hard work this past year, Provost Shirley Willihnganz honored Michelle Massey and David Hatfield with Outstanding Performance Awards November 30. Congratulations to you both.
51 friends and colleagues from nine different colleges and universities around Kentucky gathered in Louisville for the annual Kentucky Intramural and Recreational Sports Association State Conference hosted by the UofL Intramural Sports and Recreation Department. The conference featured outstanding presentations from Director of Student Activities, Tim Moore, who presented on Innovative Thinking and Robert “Bubba” Bringhurst from the Department of Public Safety who presented a program designed to prepare staff for an active shooter scenario. In addition to the presentations, the group was able to take private tours of the new KFC Yum! Center and the renovations of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Intramural people always want to see facilities, and being able to show them these two new facilities was a treat for all participants. The conference included a business meeting and discussions about plans for our state association to host the Region II conference of our national professional organization in Lexington next year. The conference wrapped up with a social trip to Churchill Downs during Breeder’s Cup week, which was fun for everyone. It’s always good to network with your friends and colleagues, and especially so when you are able to host them on your own campus and in such a wonderful city.

tions a r b Vi 9. 10-Year Anniversary for Bettie Johnson Hall
The University of Louisville Properties (ULP) celebrated its 10-year anniversary of Bettie Johnson Hall with a carnival on October 13th. Over 300 students came by for free food, games and prizes. The DJ kept the party bumping as the students danced and mingled. A magician strolled around and mystified residents and staff with his creative mind-tingling tricks. A clown made everyone feel “funny” with balloon hats, balloon bracelets and, of course, balloon swords. We appreciate everyone that came by to help us celebrate 10 years of roommates, RA programs, diversity, staff events, and all the excitement that comes with living on campus. Bettie Johnson Hall is home to 490 students including most of the UofL athletic teams. Amenities include apartment-style living, fully-equipped kitchens, outdoor swimming pool, volleyball court and various meeting, study and social areas. For a tour of Betty Johnson Hall, call the Residence Housing office at 852-6636.
10. Dale Ramsay writes about “Granny’s Gone Wild” “Grannys Gone Wild” may be the best title of an article ever and it is the one for a recent article written by Dale Ramsay, Director of Intramural and Recreational Sports, for Vype magazine. Vype is a national publication that deals with high school sports. Dale is a regular
columnist for the magazine and writes articles from the sports officiating and sport society viewpoints. His articles are always challenging and explore many levels of sports and their implications to life. Most of his articles are written from the viewpoint of an official to fans, serving to dispel many commonly-held misconceptions. Dale’s latest article, the “Granny” article as it has become widely know, dealt with a grandmother that came out of the stands at a 12 year old girls basketball game to assault a girl that had just fouled her granddaughter. You can read Dale’s article at; http://www.vype.com/greaterlouisville/magazine?durl=http:// magazine.vype.com/publication/a9f99bb8
11. Panhellenic Extension, IFC Expansion, and NPHC Reinstatement For the first time in 30 years, the Panhellenic Council voted to add a new sorority chapter to the UofL campus. The new sorority will bring the total number of NPC sororities to seven. The council is currently reviewing materials and applications to decide which group they will invite to campus. The new sorority group will colonize (the step before becoming a chapter) in fall of 2011, immediately after Formal Recruitment 2011 is completed. 5
tions a r b Vi Special thanks to Dean Mardis, Tim Moore, and Joni Burke for their tireless efforts in promoting extension and its benefits to our sororities and their national organizations. In spring 2011, UofL will also welcome a new IFC group, Alpha Tau Omega, and the reinstatement of an NPHC group, Phi Beta Sigma. Alpha Tau Omega will begin its colonization after IFC spring recruitment. Phi Beta Sigma will begin its new member intake process during the spring 2011 semester. Please remember to support these groups as they work to make our Greek system even better in 2011! The Student Activities staff is excited about the new and returning Greek organizations that will offer more involvement and leadership opportunities for students.

John Works National Championship Volleyball Match John Smith, Assistant Director of Intramural and Recreational Sports, was recently chosen to work as a Referee during the championship match of the USCAA National Championship Volleyball Tournament. The tournament was held at the Mid America Sports Center in Louisville and featured collegiate teams from as far south as Florida, north as Pennsylvania, and as far west as Texas. The United States Collegiate Athletic Conference is comprised of small schools across the country and the top ten schools in their ratings are invited to compete in their respective national championships.
