Welcome Week SOUL 2013 Event Sets Records
SOUL reached recordmore numbers this year with community service
projects, more staff and faculty serving as group leaders, and
more students serving than ever before!! 600 students went to 35 community agencies around Louisville this year during SOUL 2013. SOUL is a signature Welcome Week event each year that allows students to directly connect to the Louisville community. Many thanks to Brian Buford with the Office of LGBT Services, who was a fantastic facilitator for the pre-service program, and the innumerable student and staff volunteers that helped throughout the day with this massive program.
Student Affairs Hosts Trinidad & Tobago Intern
D r. Deirdre Charles is on sabbatical from the University of West Indies, St. Augustine Campus,
Trinidad and Tobago where she is the Director of Student Services—overseeing Careers, Placement, Orientation and Transition, Accommodation, and Special Student Projects. She has chosen to do an internship this semester with Student Affairs at the University of Louisville. Originally from St. Lucia in the Caribbean, Dr. Charles earned her B.Sc. in Public Sector Management from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, in Barbados. From there she went on to earn her M.Ed. in Human Resource Development from the University of Warwick in England after which she earned her M.B.A. from the University of Massey in New Zealand. And then she earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, in Trinidad and Tobago where she now works. For part of Dr. Charles’ sabbatical, she wanted to experience Student Affairs in the United States’ higher education system. Her connection with the University of Louisville comes from collaboration with Dr. Tom Jackson and the International Service Learning Program, which has taken students from UofL to the University of West Indies over the past four years. She is at UofL, engaging with all of the departments in Student Affairs. During her stay, she has experienced university meetings, including a Board of Trustees meeting and an Operations meeting with the Provost and Vice Presidents. She’s even been out
in the community at a Louisville Urban League meeting. Dr. Charles’ impression of UofL is that it is very sports oriented. “Students are very active in sports—both in Athletics and Intramural Sports.” Another difference is there are more students living on campus and involved in Campus Life. When asked about going to a football game, she replied, “I’ve been blown away by the ‘vibe’ of the game. Thousands of fans, lots of color and Cards chants.” She got into the game and really enjoyed it. She even had the pleasure of tailgating. When asked about the differences between the University of West Indies and UofL, she said the programs and services are really very similar. Of course the size of UofL is much larger. UofL has a separate department for Student Involvement and the Student Affairs office is located in the Student Activity Center making it a hub, “a part of the fabric of student life” because it’s located right in the middle of the activities. One other difference of interest to her, was the SGA and how integrated in the University it is from the highest level of the administration on down. She was also thrilled to meet a student from Trinidad, who is doing quite well here, and Dr. Theresa Ann Rajack-Talley, a professor of Pan American Studies—also from Trinidad. Dr. Charles’ objective has been to visit different Student Affairs at various institutions to gain a wide perspective of offerings. Last year she did an internship with the University of Canada in Guelph, and plans to do another internship in England next year.
Benchmarking ACC Career Centers
ULouisville pon the acceptance of the University of into the Atlantic Coast Conference,
Student Affairs began benchmarking the student
programs and services offered by the Division of Student Affairs with our new ACC counterparts. Kicking off this effort, Leslye Erickson, Director of the Career Development Center took the opportunity to attend SEACnet (a consortium of ACC Career Centers annual meeting) and to visit two of the top ACC Career Centers—Florida State University and Virginia Tech. Leslye spent a full day on each campus meeting with the Director and staff of each school comparing everything from budgets to facilities and staffing to student programs and services. “Many great ideas were gathered that we look forward to customizing to the needs of our students at UofL” Leslye states. She was pleased about the UofL addition to the ACC and the opportunity it creates for the Division of Student Affairs to reach out and benchmark with so many terrific programs. “Our bar has been raised.”
Free Store in Unitas
G RASS, the student environmental club,
wants to make us all more sustainable, so they opened the UofL Free Store to encourage reusing over buying new. The store, located in the basement of Unitas Tower, is stocked with clothes, books, shoes,
household items and other items collected when students moved out in the spring. Students, faculty and staff can come to the store, open every Friday from 3-5, and have anything they like—free of charge! The store will be staffed by volunteers from GRASS and other organizations. There were about 40 people that visited the store the day of the Grand Opening, including student Kara Carmichael who said she was “saved by the Free Store” because she found just the right gift for a friend at just the right time. GRASS member DaTonya Shumaker, said they are planning events to help promote the store they may include a fashion show of Free Store clothes.

Young and old were encouraged to show the greatness of Parkland through art. Heidi Elmer, Julie Onnembo, Lauren Doerner, Pam Curtis and our two summer interns, Josh Brown and Amanda Fishman, helped out by painting and working with the kids to add feathers to the Phoenix on June 20.
