University Wind Ensemble MUS 3410/5410-001 | Audition is required

This select concert band is composed of the University’s finest graduate and undergraduate wind, brass, and percussion musicians.

The Campus Bands are open to students of varied majors and disciplines within the University. These ensembles allow all levels of student musicians to enjoy making music. Each Campus Band rehearses once per week at Huntington Bank Stadium and performs two concerts per semester. AT H L E T I C B A N D S

Campus Bands MUS 3400 | Audition is not required

An ensemble of select wind, brass, and percussion players. Although many members are music majors, the ensemble includes a number of undergraduate and graduate students from other disciplines.

University Band

MUS 3400-001 | Audition is required

An ensemble of wind, brass, and percussion players who represent a combination of music majors and students from other disciplines. Performs four concerts per year.

SY M P H O N I C BAND

Marching Band MUS 3480 | Audition is required

Consisting of more than 320 students from across the University, the band performs at all Gopher home football games and at Indoor Concerts. Visit z.umn.edu/mnmarch for more information. Spat camp begins in late August.

Athletic Pep Bands MUS 3490 | Audition is required

Membership in one of three pep bands is based on auditions, instrumentation, and ensemble size. Pep band members play at athletic events throughout the year. MARCHING BAND


GOSPEL CHOIR

OPERA

Jazz Combos MUS 3350 | Audition is required

Jazz combos—dedicated to playing small group jazz— consist of a rhythm section (bass, drums, piano and/or guitar) and one to four other instruments, depending on balance and ability level. Combos are open to players of all instruments, as well as vocalists. OPERA

Opera Workshop MUS 5250 | Audition is required CHOIR

ORCHESTRA

University Singers MUS 5240 | Audition is required

As the flagship choral ensemble of the University of Minnesota, this ensemble explores classical and global repertoire from the Renaissance through the 20th century. Concerts include convention presentations and collaborations with college and community choruses, and School of Music ensembles.

Women’s Chorus MUS 3230/5230 | Audition is required

This choir sings classical, folk, popular, and global music for female (treble) voices. Concerts occur both on and offcampus and include performances at area festivals. The choir collaborates with the Men’s Chorus, other collegiate women’s choruses, and various University ensembles.

Men’s Chorus

MUS 3200-004 | Audition is not required

Performs glee club, folk, popular, and classical music. The choir collaborates with the Women’s Chorus, community organizations, other collegiate men’s choruses, and University ensembles.

University Symphony Orchestra MUS 3420/5420 | Audition is required

A select ensemble of students who are primarily music majors. The orchestra rehearses and performs the finest orchestral literature, from well-known works to premieres of new compositions. Regularly collaborates with the University Opera Theatre.

Campus Orchestra MUS 3430 | Audition is not required

Open to students of varied majors within the University and explores orchestral music. Each Campus Orchestra rehearses once per week and performs concerts twice per semester. JA Z Z

World Music Ensemble MUS 5460 | Audition is not required

Focuses on Afro-Brazilian popular repertories, especially samba, tropicalia/MPB, and bossa nova. Master classes and clinics with local artists complement rehearsals and performances. All instrumentalists/vocalists welcome.

West African Music Ensemble MUS 5494 | Audition is not required

Hands-on experience in learning to play West African music, one of the great non-western musical traditions that are readily accessible to beginners.

Jazz Ensembles

MUS 3340/5340 | Audition is required

Students play a variety of big band repertoire and perform at events on and off-campus. Entrance is limited to traditional big band instruments: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion.

Campus Singers MUS 3200 | Audition is not required

Open to all members of the University community, including students from all majors. Explores music of diverse cultures, styles, and periods, and they collaborate in programs with guest artists, the Men’s and Women’s Choruses, and various University ensembles.

A program designed to provide performance-oriented opera and music theatre singers with theoretical and practical instruction in opera stagecraft. The course combines theatre games and exercises, improvisations, and script readings, with rehearsal of selected opera and music theatre repertoire as “scene studies.”

Javanese Gamelan MUS 5490-002 | Audition is not required

A gamelan is a percussion orchestra indigenous to Indonesia. Instruments include gongs and metallophones. Offered spring semester.

ORCHESTRA

Gospel Choir

MUS 3380-001 | Audition is not required

Open to all members of the University community. Students explore the history of gospel music through experiential/ participatory songs, field songs, songs of struggle, Southern, traditional, and contemporary songs. This choir will help students develop improved vocal skills.
