CHALLENGES WITHIN RELIGIONS

From time immemorial, the human mind has wanted to question, to analyze, to modify ideas and concepts presented by other human minds. Some of these beliefs and philosophies have led to – at times deadly – conflicts between factions, known as heresies and leading to schisms. What effect did these have on our present society? Day

POLITICAL NOVELS OF THE 1840s & 1850s – NEW

The first twenty years of “the age of railways” was a marvelously productive time for British literature. This four-week course will consider a selection of works published between 1840 and 1860, examining their critique of Victorian society and their ideas about progress. The works to be considered, some in more detail than others, will include Carlyle’s Past and Present (1843), Dickens’s Martin Chuzzlewit (1844), Disraeli’s Sybil (1845), Tennyson’s The Princess (1847), Brontë’s Shirley (1849), Kingsley’s Alton Locke (1850), Dickens’s Hard Times (1854), Gaskell’s North and South (1855), Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh (1856), Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing (1859) and Thomas Hughes’s Tom Brown at Oxford (1859). The course will attempt to present the literature within the cultural context of these years, from the unemployment crisis of the “Hungry Forties,” to the Great Exhibition of 1851, to the political and scientific debates represented by such works as Mill’s On Liberty and Darwin’s Origin of Species (both 1859), with some reference to other arts (i.e. the Pre-Raphaelite painters and some popular songs of the period). AGEISM AND THE MEDIA

The Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism has been looking into this issue along with researchers at the University of Regina - and journalists are responding with some startling facts. Not only has there been a drastic reduction of staff in Canadian newsrooms, there’s also been a disproportionate exit of journalists over 50. This means fewer mentors with years of local experience and their carefully collected lists of contacts. Young journalists are still looking for stories, for sources and for expertise.
