Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience

Page 1

The Magic of Theatre for Children: A Note from the Chair What are your first memories of going to the theatre or watching a live performance? One of my first memories of live performance was seeing a musical called Captain Boogie and the Kids from Mars in an odd little theatre in the West Village of New York City. I was not quite five years old at the time, and I remember almost nothing about the show other than its title, the rock concert-style set, and seeing it with some friends from my nursery school. But the fact that I can remember anything about this experience over forty years later suggests how powerful live performance can be for a child. Theatrical storytelling is… magical. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, my husband was an actor working in Minneapolis and Seattle, where two of the nation’s great children’s theatres reside. When he worked at these theatres, I always went to see his performances. We didn’t have children at the time, but those companies were producing some of the best theatre around, theatre that was both fun and profoundly moving. And seeing the shows with audiences dominated by children was itself a remarkable experience. There is an electricity in the air at a performance for children, who have not yet learned to suppress their anticipation and delight when the lights go down. The air buzzes. Bodies wiggle. Like a rock concert, the excitement in the air at a show for children is absolutely palpable. While we might think of children’s entertainment as light and fluffy, it often addresses extremely important topics. It poses existential questions about the nature of justice, love, fairness, identity, friendship, family, and more. As Karen Zacarías, an author of plays for both young people and adults points out, “Writing a play for a children’s theater is not just writing a script; it is about giving kids dynamic tools to help them make sense of our complicated world.” Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed is just such a script. Through metaphor it invites all of us to contemplate our place in a community, and asks how each of us will make space for difference in our community. I don’t remember what questions Captain Boogie posed or how it contributed to my 4-year-old understanding of the complicated world in which I was growing up. (I don’t even remember the plot!) But it did make an impression upon me. Maybe it was because I was with my pals from school at a rock musical for kids, something special that said, “We see you. You might be ‘just kids,’ but your stories, your interests are worthy of our attention and creative energy.” No matter how old you are or where you come from, whether you are a naked mole rat who likes to wear clothes or a pigeon who wants to drive a bus, we welcome you to join our community in the Babcock Theatre as we learn to make space for the beauty of the differences that define our humanity.

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR

GENERAL MCARTHUR HAMBRICK What is a naked mole rat? That was the question that came to mind when I was first approached to direct this very unusual, but clever show. In the children’s book Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed by Mo Willems, from which this rock musical is adapted, I discovered many layers and messages in the tunnels of the text. In my discussions with the actors, production team, and dramaturg, I realized that everyone saw a different little jewel. In one instance, I was asked, “Do you think it is about peer pressure?” And I said, “On the contrary, because it is story of discovering new things, being willing to accept those things, being creative, and wanting to share those joys, and gifts with those around you. All the while, knowing that not everyone will accept everything you put before them, but you are giving them an opportunity to try something new, imagining all of the possibilities.” It also shows us that you are an individual and the choices you make are just that, yours. I am very honored that the Department of Theatre invited me to work with the students, faculty, and staff here at the University of Utah and to be a part of something so special. I do believe this is the first time that the Department has done a musical for young audiences since the Musical Theatre Program was reestablished, and I am elated to be a part of this journey. Now, I would like for you to join us as we take you on a trip with our little colony, and hopefully you will find a little jewel along the way. _ General McArthur Hambrick

DRAMATURGICAL RESOURCES What is a dramaturg? Dramaturgs have several important jobs when working on a show: 1. Put the play in context for both the creative team and the audience; 2. Anticipate how specific creative choices will or won’t help tell the story; and 3. Engage with the audience during post-show discussions and other educational efforts (e.g., workshops or lectures). Point your phone’s camera at the QR code to the right of this text to access the website Mark Fossen (our dramaturg) created for Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed.

STUDY GUIDE Scan this code with your phone’s camera to access the Department of Theatre’s student guide for Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience. We hope you find these resources useful. Here, you’ll find activities you can do before, during, or after you see the show in person or online. There are many ways to use the materials we have gathered and created here.
