COACHING STAFF PEYVAND

MOSSAVAT

HEAD COACH

In only the fifth season since the inception of the program, Peyvand Mossavat has led the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) women’s soccer team to new heights in 2016. The women’s soccer program defeated the Queen’s Gaels 1-0 on Sunday at Mustangs Field in London to claim both the program and school’s first OUA banner. To get to the final four, UOIT won their first OUA East Division title in school history posting a 13-2-1 record, featuring an offence that led the nation in scoring with 60 goals in 16 conference games. The Ridgebacks defensive unit was just as impressive holding opponents to just nine goals. After the historic season, Mossavat was named OUA East Division Coach of the Year for the second time in the past three seasons. This is the fourth time Mossavat has won the award, previously bringing home the honours in 2012 with UOIT and in 2007 while coaching the Ryerson Rams. He was also named CIS coach of the year in 2014, after leading the Ridgebacks to an OUA bronze medal and to their first national championship appearance in school history. In October, Mossavat was appointed head coach of team Canada for the 2017 Summer Universiade in Chinese Taipei. At the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, the Canadian women (who had Mossavat as head coach) finished in fourth place out of 15 teams – their highest finish in history – conceding the bronze medal game to Japan. In eight years coaching in the OUA prior to UOIT at York and Ryerson, his student-athletes won over 30 OUA/CIS awards. Fifteen of his athletes also won academic All-Canadian awards under his direction and vision for academic success. Community involvement was also a top-priority for Mossavat as his team’s organized a number of activities and workshops that raised funds that supported local women’s shelters and food banks. Mossavat holds a USSF National A licence and works at the national training centre of Ontario as the head coach of the U14 girls provincial team. In 2012, he coached the U15 girls provincial team to a national championship title in Halifax, N.S. Locally, he is the Oshawa Turul soccer club head coach where he is responsible for coaching and player development at the grassroots and elite level. He works at the Ontario Soccer Association and has been head coach of a number of provincial teams in different age groups. As a player, he was a member of the Canadian Olympic program and represented Canada in 1993 in the World University Games. Professionally, he was a five-time all-star in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.

ROAD TO THE CIS CHAMPIONSHIP Women’s soccer wins first OUA championship LONDON, Ont. – For the first time ever – UOIT has won an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship. The women’s soccer program defeated the Queen’s Gaels 1-0 on Sunday at Mustangs Field in London to claim both the program and school’s first OUA banner. “It’s a pretty indescribable feeling to be honest – I’m extremely proud of the girls and the way they played over the weekend and throughout the season,” said UOIT manager of intercollegiate athletics Scott Barker. “The first OUA banner and championship in UOIT history and I can’t think of a more deserving team than the women’s soccer program for what they’ve done over the last five years.” In the 22nd minute OUA all-star Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the match, outmuscling the Queen’s defender to earn a breakaway and tuck the ball in the bottom left corner of the net under Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.). The Ridgeback defence was strong throughout the game, but the defending champion Queen’s Gaels did string together numerous second half opportunities – including a shot off the crossbar late in the match. Tyrell finished the game with four saves, while UOIT keeper and OUA all-star Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) made two stops in the match. “I – I was just emotional, obviously some tears and I wanted to go congratulate the other coach for what they’ve done, but I knew I had to come back and celebrate with the girls and enjoy it with the girls,” said UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat. “The last five years building the program hasn’t been easy, but you feel like everything you’ve done, it some how summed up to this.” The Ridgebacks best finish in their program’s five-year history prior to Sunday was a bronze medal at the 2014 championship in Hamilton. “It’s surreal – I kind of had to pinch myself a couple times, but it’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had,” said fifthyear defender Jamie Ryan (Ottawa, Ont.). After the game UOIT captain Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) was named the Porter Airlines player of the game. “I can’t (describe it), I don’t think that I’ve taken it in, but I can’t put it into words,” said Bordeleau. “It feels overwhelming and amazing and I’m overwhelmed with pride for my team.” Both teams now advance to the U Sports (CIS) women’s soccer championship at Acadia University from Nov. 10-13.

ROAD TO THE CIS CHAMPIONSHIP Ridgebacks advance to OUA final for first time in program history LONDON, Ont. – The UOIT women’s soccer team are guaranteed to have their best finish at an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship in school history after defeating the Windsor Lancers 3-1 on Friday in London. Prior to this season UOIT’s best finish at the women’s soccer championship was a bronze medal in 2014, which was also the school’s first OUA medal in a team sport. Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) scored twice in the Ridgebacks’ victory, including the opening goal of the match in the fourth minute. Leading into the Final Four, Zajac also scored the game-winning goal in Saturday’s OUA quarter-final victory over Laurentian. “Nicole is fantastic - she is a true footballer,” said UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat, who was named OUA East Division Coach of the Year. “We unfortunately did not have her early on because of a knee injury, but she’s back and she was force finding the back of the net today.” Zajac’s opening goal came off a cross-crease pass by Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.), with Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.) letting the ball go through her legs to an open Zajac who beat an outstretched Krystin Lawrence (Tecumseh, Ont.). This was the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes as UOIT went into the break leading 4-2 in shots. In the second half UOIT doubled their lead on a penalty kick after Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) was taken down in the box. Sribny put the ball in the right side of the net, with Lawrence going in the opposite direction. Sribny continued to get involved in the Ridgebacks offence as she gave the ball to Zajac at the top of the box. After a single touch she put it in the top-right corner to put UOIT ahead 3-0 in the 57th minute. Trailing by three, the Lancers would push pressure on the UOIT defenders who stood strong until the 79th minute when Windsor was fouled in the box. Becca Fuerth (Woodslee, Ont.) put the ball in the bottom-left corner of the net to score on the penalty kick – with Ridgeback keeper Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) guessing wrong and diving to the right side of the goal. Unfortunately the late push came up short for the Lancers – who are making their first appearance at the OUA Final Four – as the Ridgebacks punched their ticket to the OUA final and guaranteed that they will be one of the two Ontario schools going to the CIS women’s soccer championship next week in Wolfville, N.S. “I’m excited for the girls, I’m excited for the school and everyone involved with our soccer program,” said Mossavat. “It’s a little bit tough right now because I really wasn’t excited about our performance. The result was great, but we have to fix some things if we want to bring the banner home.” Frampton made two saves in the victory, while Lawrence made three for the Lancers. The Ridgebacks will now play the Queen’s Gaels in the OUA championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Queen’s defeated the host Western Mustangs 2-0 on Friday night. “Any time you beat a good team like Western on their home field you’re excited to have gotten the result,” said Gaels head coach Dave McDowell. “They’re a good team without any real weaknesses all over the field so anytime you get a break here or there and get a goal – we’re happy to take it.” UOIT swept the season series 2-0 over the Gaels, with 1-0 and 2-1 wins. Western plays the Windsor Lancers at 11 a.m. in the OUA bronze medal game. “We know each other fairly well after playing each other twice during the season,” he said. “We’ll see if we can do some things to make sure we’re ready for that.” Both games on Sunday can we watched on OUA TV. Both teams now advance to the U Sports (CIS) women’s soccer championship at Acadia University from Nov. 10-13.

ROAD TO THE CIS CHAMPIONSHIP Ridgebacks advance to the OUA final four OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women’s soccer team punched their ticket to the OUA final four on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs at Civic Fields. This marks the second time in the five-year history of the program that the Ridgebacks have advanced to the final four. The Ridgebacks other trip to the provincial championship came back in 2014 in Hamilton where the team won a bronze medal, their first in program history. UOIT does not know who their opponent will be in the semifinal or where it will be taking place because all other three quarter-final match-ups are taking place on Sunday. The Ridgebacks controlled Saturday’s match, outshooting the Voyageurs 19-3 including 10-1 in the first half. Despite the lopsided shot total in the opening 45 minutes, UOIT and Laurentian went into the break scoreless. It wasn’t until the 57th minute when Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) broke the deadlock when she banked in perfectly placed cross from Jessica Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) to give the Ridgebacks a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, UOIT’s Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) would extend the Ridgebacks lead to 2-0 on a great solo effort. Henderson raced by a Laurentian defender and beat goalkeeper Dina Mandolesi one-on-one. UOIT continued to apply a lot of offensive pressure but Mandolesi made a number of key stops to keep Laurentian within striking distance. She would end up with seven saves in the match. Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.) would end up with five shots while Zajac had four. At the other end of the pitch, Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) stopped all three Laurentian shots on target for the clean sheet. Frampton looked confident over the 90-minute game coming out to challenge Laurentian shooters and taking away a number of scoring opportunities. On Sunday, Queen’s will be hosting Ottawa in the other eastern conference quarter-final while Windsor/York and Guelph/Western make up the western conference match-ups. Saturday’s match at the civic marked the final home game with the program for four original Ridgebacks. Mithrush, Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.), Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) and Jamie Ryan (Ottawa, Ont.), all who played in the program’s first year were honoured by head coach Peyvand Mossavat prior to the game.

FISU GAMES Mossavat named Canadian women’s soccer head coach for 2017 Summer Universiade TORONTO, Ont. – U Sports announced Friday the coaching staff that will lead Canada in women’s soccer at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Chinese Taipei. The 29th world university summer games are set for August 19 to 30 in Taipei City. Peyvand Mossavat from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology has been appointed head coach of the red and white squad and will be joined on the sidelines by assistant coach Jose-Luis Valdes from McGill University. A team leader and therapist will be announced at a later date. Mossavat, in his fifth season at the helm of UOIT’s women’s program after previous stops at Ryerson at York, led the No. 3 ranked Ridgebacks to the best record in program history and the team’s first OUA east regular season title in 2016. Over the years, he has guided numerous Ontario provincial teams and has been an assistant coach with the women’s National Training Centre. A remarkable player in his own right, Mossavat is a former member of the Canadian Olympic program and himself competed at the FISU Games in 1993 in Buffalo. At the professional level, he was a five-time all-star in the Canadian Soccer League. “I’m honoured to be part of the next coaching staff and lead the Canadian women’s soccer team into the next world university games in 2017,” said Mossavat, who was named U Sports coach of the year in 2014, after leading the Ridgebacks to the program’s first appearance at the national championship. “We had an incredible group of athletes and coaches in 2015 which lead into our great success at the Games. I’m excited about this opportunity and hope to be able to create a memorable experience for our Canadian student-athletes and raise the profile of U Sports soccer at the international level.” At the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, the Canadian women (who had Mossavat as head coach) finished in fourth place out of 15 teams – their highest finish in history – conceding the bronze medal game to Japan. The all-U Sports Canadian roster for the Taipei City Games will be announced at a later date. At Ontario’s first laptop-based university, all students use a high-end laptop computer loaded with the latest hardware and industry- and program-specific software to conduct research, make presentations and access course material; One of the greatest advantages of this national award-winning program is that all students have equal access to the same technology, resources and services; Professors develop sophisticated course content using a campuswide learning management system; and UOIT’s campus is designed for students to use their laptops in classrooms, labs, the library, residences, food spaces, meeting spaces and more. State-of-the-art facilities UOIT’s founding mission called on the university to advance the highest quality of research in order to create the highest quality intellectual property. Consider it mission accomplished to date with a bright future ahead as UOIT has exceeded all expectations in building a strong national reputation for research excellence and the future is bright. ATHLETIC FACILITIES

CRWC The Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics and health & fitness at UOIT. The centre piece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The gymnasium is fully equipped with a top of the line shock resistant maple hardwood floor, seating for 2,000 spectators and a curtain system to create three separate gyms. The triple gym also has three electronic scoreboards, a professional quality sound system and a complete floor covering system available for non-sporting events. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track. Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators. The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. The boardroom has a meeting room capacity of 24, and up to 36 for special event use. Another highlight of the CRWC is the VIP lounge that includes a great view on to main court action or other special events in the gymnasium. The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart TipOff Tournament, the Adidas Cup and the Big 8 Classic. Sharing space with the CRWC is the Campus Health Centre. This facility is home to a medical clinic as well as an on-site pharmacy. The Health Centre is also home to an alternative treatment clinic which offers acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy and nutritional counseling. The CRWC was the proud host of the 2008 Provincial Special Olympics Spring Games.

FLEX Centre

The FLEX Fitness Centre is one of the great new additions of the CRWC at UOIT. The FLEX Fitness Centre is 10,000-sq. ft., full of the best state-of-the-art cardio and weight machines. The centre also includes two aerobic/dance studios, two training rooms used for sports training and fitness related classes. Also available to the athletes is a brand new physiotherapy room, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Having these services all under one roof will allow for quicker care, which in turn will result in quicker recovery and a return to game action.

UOIT TRADITIONS

Ridgebacks Nickname The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus. Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

Hunter the Ridgeback Hunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.

Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

The BLUE CREW

The Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets. Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.
