VOLUNTEERING FAIR 2015

WELCOME TO THE

VOLUNTEERING FAIR 2015!

The number of students recorded as volunteering by Purple Door reached 700 last year and we start the current academic year with over 185 volunteering roles for you to choose from. Employers continue to want to see much more than a degree on a graduate's CV; they need to see strong evidence of skill sets relevant to the role you are applying for. Volunteering is one of the career enhancing activities that will allow you to access these skills, build your confidence and ensure you enter the job market competitively and it does not need to be a long term commitment, nor take more than a few hours a week. Purple Door has close links with a wide variety of organisations including local schools, the police, the NHS, Portsmouth City Council, charities, and other not for profit organisations, who provide voluntary roles that may be linked to your course or future career path. All the roles on offer today have something in common - they are designed to improve your employability skills and therefore your future graduate job prospects. The organisations attending today's fair are here because they value students - your help, your ideas and your contribution, but they also want to pass on their knowledge and help you develop new skills. So make the most of today and do something for yourself and the local community. If you see a role you like you can either complete an application form at the fair or register your name for further info. If you are unsure which skill sets you need to develop for your future career path, then make sure you grab a quick chat with one of our Careers Advisers who will situated at the Student Breakout area. Who knows, the volunteering you do in the next few months might help you make some difficult decisions and may even take you in a totally different career direction. Enjoy!

VOLUNTEERING FAIR 2015 It’s great to do something with your free time and volunteer. There are many ways you can get involved whilst studying at the University of Portsmouth; by joining local community projects, one-off projects with VIP or find opportunities with recognised organisations at Purple Door. As a student I got a lot out of my time volunteering. This included supporting my classmates at high level meetings and ensuring the student voice is heard by being a Course Representative and a Faculty Representative. I also got involved with raids helping to raise money for charity via Raising and Giving (RAG). I was also lucky enough to work with Hampshire Constabulary Student Watch scheme and the Food Cycle scheme helping homeless people in the community. I was also a committee member and presenter on our fantastic student radio station Pure FM. These are just some examples of the diverse range of volunteering opportunities available to you right now. Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and develop as a person while helping others and meeting new people. If you have considered volunteering before, then our Volunteering Fair is the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what you can get involved in. When you ask volunteers why they spend their time volunteering, you will get a lot of different reasons. There are some added benefits you may not have thought about and that you might want to consider. You can gain insight and knowledge, not only of a cause or organisation, but of yourself as well, and you also get an opportunity to gain a new set of skills; this is especially valuable for when you are applying for jobs. Volunteering can also be a great opportunity to make some really useful contacts which could help you later in life. The Volunteering Fair is a perfect opportunity to find out more about volunteering and to get involved in life changing opportunities. Have a look around, register your interest and get involved. Give a little, gain a lot!
