Protection, predation & self-harm Prisons can be violent places. Medical care in the prison system necessarily involves managing injuries resulting from altercations between prisoners or episodes of self-harm, with injuries often inflicted using hand-made weapons fashioned from every-day items. In addition, prisoners’ health can be adversely affected during management of riots when gas is used to subdue the prisoners.
