As children we were seated at the “kids table” which was usually a large old couch or a couple of card tables off to the side. When you were young it was an okay place to sit because you were surrounded by cousins your own age.

But eventually you started to look forward to the day when you got to move to the “adult table.” But no one ever really defined when that would be. It was something along the line of “wait till next year.”

And when you did reach that point, you couldn't have a drink “until you’re 18,” which was the legal drinking age back then.

Families just have their own kind of rules I suppose.

As my dad used to say, “One goes out and another one comes in.”

Just this year, my mom, Patti, passed away, devastating our family.

GRAYLING - The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) recently released their State Cemetery Report, which a group of local veterans supporters had been eagerly anticipating.

Earlier this year, this same group organized a wreath laying ceremony at a military cemetery atop Johnson Hill, at Hanson Hills.

“We received the state report and were sadly disappointed by the findings,” said Crawford County Commissioner Carey Jansen.

The DMVA had outlined plans for a feasibility study for state-operated veterans cemetery in Michigan, which locals are hoping will land in Crawford County.

The DMVA stated that they, “. . . do not have the operational or budgetary capabilities to support the efforts necessary to further develop the feasibility and economic studies needed to determine actual and true costs associated with establishing a state veteran cemetery system here in Michigan.”

A local proponent of the cemetery, Wayne Koppa, said he is disappointed by the news, but plans to submit a supplement report to the state the first of the year.

Jansen is optimistic.

“We hope to establish an endowment fund at the county to assist with uncovered expenses for the internment of our veterans and their spouses and for the future maintenance of a state operated veterans cemetery in Crawford County,” she added.

A Tisket, A Tasket: Earn a ticket for a basket

ROSCOMMON - Friends of the Roscommon Area District Library invites library visitors to win gift baskets as a “Thank You” from the Friends to all who love the library.

Visitors may receive a ticket each day they visit RADL, (one ticket per day). As a bonus, visitors who attend a program by Dec. 17 will receive an additional ticket that day. Ticket holders may choose which baskets to enter the drawing to win. Drawing for basket winners will be held at the library Dec. 17. Winners do not have to be present to win.

Hopeful winners have three baskets from which to choose.

Basket 1: Christmas Adult Basket, brimming with a $25 Family Fare Gift Card, books, a Christmas DVD, cookie mix, jam, candles and more.

Basket 2: a Christmas Kids “Basket” is a toddler’s sled overflowing with books, games, toys and treats. And to tempt the adventurous.

Basket 3: a Mystery Basket filled with surprises. And the fun is just beginning! In the coming months, the Friends of RADL will be designing themed adult and kids baskets for drawings each month. Everyone is encouraged to continue visiting the remarkable library and enter to win.

Ever expanding and welcoming new members, the Friends of RADL is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the development of excellent

Membership dues are $5 a year and payable at RADL or at the monthly meeting. The next membership meeting is at the library on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at noon.

looking forward to other, upcoming additions – Jenna and her husband John are expecting another daughter; another niece, Harmony, is expecting a daughter in weeks; and my nephew Zachary and his girlfriend, Courtney, are also expecting.

Changes in the way we celebrate

And the way we celebrate holidays change due to the circumstances we live in as well.

I recall one year being far from home and broke on Thanksgiving.

We made homemade chicken soup for dinner out of a big chicken breast, a couple of bouillon cubes and some canned veggies. The neighbor across the street gave us a home-made pumpkin pie. A friend brought over a can of cranberry sauce and some rolls. We scraped enough money together to have a toast with a $2 bottle of Boone's Farm. It was a dinner to remember.

When I was stationed in Bamberg, Germany, Christmas dinner there was held at my squad leader’s house: Sgt. Mike Blowers. His wife made us an incredible meal and we paid him to let us use their telephone to call home … A rarity in those days. And crazy expensive.

This Thanksgiving, Autumn and Rix hosted their first official holiday, as the dinner torch is passed.

Christmas will be split between my niece, Courtney's home, and across the south and Midwest.

They will be Christmas celebrations like no other; unique with their own video and cell phone pics. But different kinds of memories.

And even though none of these are what Christmas had been for me as a child, they are all still a celebration of what's important in our lives: Family, friends and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than ourselves; A time to give thanks for what we have, not to worry about what we don't.

Come Christmas, if you're not in the same room as the people you care about, don't forget to text, call, snap a cell pic or send a Messenger note.

Let them know they are loved and missed. And regardless of where you may be physically, you’re celebrating the memories and traditions of Christmas memories past, as well as building new memories for the future.

Here comes Santa Claus …

By Mark Constance NORTHEAST MICHIGAN - The Santa Train is coming to Roscommon, Grayling, West Branch and Standish.

Lake State Railway has been gracious enough bring the train back to Northeast Michigan, and plans to roll in Dec. 11.

Lake State Spokesperson Shasta Duffy is excited about the opportunity to bring Santa back to the community's historic railroad depots.

“This is a great event and we're excited to be able to sponsor it,” Duffy said. “Santa and Mrs. Claus

with exit the train and enter the depots to meet with the children.

And the old-time cartoon characters will be mingling with the crowd. It's something we all look forward to.”

What, no turkey?

View From the Comfy Chair

By Joel Vernier The holiday season is about to begin, and Thanksgiving is almost upon us.

I think I will settle back into my comfy chair, close my eyes and think about all of the holiday cheer, food, family, friends, and fun. At long last, sleep was about to envelop me like a warp field, and I was about to jettison into REM sleep. I was abruptly woken when my wife yelled out, “Joel, did you pick up the turkey?”

“No, I forgot,” I responded.

“Well, you better get going, or we will have no turkey with all of the trimmings this year.” The tradition at the Vernier house is turkey. “On my way!” I yelled back.

We love eating turkey. After Thanksgiving, when turkeys are on sale, we buy 5-6 and put them in the freezer to cook almost monthly.

Sometimes we smoke them, sometimes we cook them in the kettle charcoal grill, and other times we cook a traditional dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy.

As I drove out to the store, a flock of wild turkeys crossed the road ahead of me. They are beautiful birds and, in the wild, very smart.

They have a dark color to their feathers, unlike the white turkeys that have been domesticated for our consumption. I remembered a story that domestic turkeys are kept under a roof because if they were outside during a rainstorm, they would look up and drown themselves.

I went into the grocery store,

down the meat aisle, and looked at the turkey section; they were sold out! A little sweat appeared on my brow. Upon asking where the turkeys were, I was told, “Sold Out!” I headed out of the door and raced to another grocery store in town; they were also sold out. Panic began to set in.

I drove to the neighborhood butcher store, ran up to the counter said, “Help, I need a turkey for Thanksgiving!” They responded, “Sorry, we are all out of turkey, just sold the last on 10 minutes ago.”

“This is a nightmare!” I yelled out. I have family coming over for dinner on Thanksgiving; what can I do? “Well, Sir, you could serve the “Turkey Spam” is very popular in Hawaii. ”Turkey Spam’” I cried out; how many cans of “Turkey Spam” do I need for 8 people?” “Eight cans, one per person,” they said.

I envisioned the holiday table set with all of the trimmings: mashed potatoes, gravy cranberries, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, and there in the middle, a stack of “Turkey Spam’ shaped to look like a turkey. Where is the white meat?

How do I carve it? Where is the wishbone? I was never very good at making clay pots; how can I shape the Turkey Spam to look like a turkey? Where will we put the stuffing? I love eating the drumstick!

Then my shoulder was moving; it was my wife. “Joel, you must have been having a nightmare; wake up.”

“I didn’t get the turkey,” I exclaimed.

“Yes, you got it yesterday.”

I jumped up, grabbed my car keys, and headed out the door.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“To the grocery store, I have a sudden urge for “Turkey Spam,” I responded.

ROBOTICS TEAM KICKS ELECTRONS – The Fairview High School Robotics team recently competed in its first event of the season in Petoskey.

There were 28 qualifying matches and the school had one of its five teams advance, taking sixth place in the event out of 16. The team's next meet is Jan. 8 at Jennison High School in Grand Rapids, followed by a Jan. 22 meet for both middle and high school teams. Mike Stone is the robotics coach, and a math teacher at Fairview Area Schools.

Camp Westminster receives grant ROSCOMMON - The Roscommon County Community Foundation (RCCF) is thrilled to share that Camp Westminster was awarded a grant of $2,500 to help host a day camp for Roscommon Public School District. Funding for this project was provided by the Morley Foundation Fund.

Oscoda Senior News By Suzanne Barker I am hoping everyone is easing into the winter season okay.

I must admit, that other than the holidays it is not my favorite time of year. The cold and I just don’t get along as well as we used to.

However, I love where I live so I just deal with it. There are a couple events going on that I would like to let you know about.

Dec. 16 – Christmas buffet style dinner from 2-3 p.m. This is a dine-in only event, no to go orders will be served that day.

We have started working on our Christmas boxes. We are always looking for donations to help with this. Some items that would be helpful would be puzzle books, soaps, body washes, lotions, paper products such as: toilet paper, Kleenex, paper towel or napkins, socks for men or women, cleaning supplies, candy, and wrapping paper.

We are truly grateful for any donations you can bring in, and I know the gift box recipients

appreciate it as well.

A food drop from Together We Can Food Pantry will be at the fairgrounds Dec. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Please remember if they run out of food earlier, they will be gone before 2:30.

The CSFP (senior cheese box) is scheduled for Dec. 14 from 10-1 a.m., also at the fairgrounds. will be on December 14th from 10:00 to 11:00, this also takes place at the fairgrounds.

The board of directors meeting is scheduled for Dec. 13 at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

There will be a breakfast meal Dec. 23 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. for dine in or to go orders. The center will close at noon that day and reopen Jan. 3 at 8 a.m.

The December Cold Moon will be shining down on the 18th. All of us at the Oscoda County Senior Center are wishing for wonderful holidays and a Merry Christmas for all of you!

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect.Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."

The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"

Courageous Cowboy at Pearly Gates A Texas cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly gates.

Have you ever done anything of particular merit?' St Peter asked.

'Well, I can think of one thing,' the cowboy offered.

'Once, on a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker, smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.' I yelled, 'Now back off!! Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he! Didn't need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

"I don't know," he said.

"She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

Service Casualty One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.

The seven-year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning Alex."

"Good morning Pastor," he replied, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor, what is this?"

The pastor said, "Well son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."

Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.

Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, "Which service, the 8:30 or the 10:45?" because you had a flat tire, the very next morning you really will have a flat tire.

Ortega’s rooster disappeared Home Country

By Slim Randles We almost believed we had a crime wave going on, which perplexed us all, especially since it’s Christmas and all.

It all began when old man Ortega’s rooster disappeared. He reported it to the police, too, who thought this neighborhood alarm clock finally met with a dissatisfied customer who was now gleefully making dumplings.

The police said as much to Ortega, and the old man wanted to know what the police were going to do about it. Well, since it had been almost a week since they’d had a complaint come in, the chief sent young Glen around the neighborhood asking chicken questions. Everyone denied ending ol’ Doodle’s career … when they finished laughing. Old man Ortega got a copy of the report.

Ortega had his suspicions, of

course. There was one neighbor lady who had once complained about the rooster to Ortega, and he had defended to her very face his rooster’s right to crow. She then asked if he couldn’t getol’ Doodles operated on, like they do to dogs, and get his doodler clipped so he’d be singing blanks, as it were.

Ortega hotly replied that anyone who would deliberately maim an American rooster would steal sheep.

Later on, he apologized and offered to buy her some ear plugs. She passed on the ear plug offer, but poured him a cup of coffee and that seemed to be that.

But still, ol’ Doodles was gone, and there was no denying that. We finally put two and two together when another neighbor caught a coyote going over the fence with one of his hens, but we always wondered about that doodler-snipping operation. We’ll have to ask Doc about it.

McKinley scholarships available

By Mike Salsbury MCKINLEY - The McKinley Civic Association (MCA) is offering a $200-250 scholarship to one senior from both the Mio and Fairview Schools. The award is based on a one-page essay in which the student describes his or her short-term or long-term career goals.

According to Association Leader Tim Ferguson, “It’s enough for gas to get out of the county.”

The amount is made up of the

dues of all the members of the association, and supplemented by a portion of the general fund, which is supported by the local transfer station.

Interested seniors should submit their essays to their school guidance counselors, who will then transfer them to the MCA board for judging and awards.

Check with guidance counselors for deadlines, but judging usually takes place in January or February.

Apple Oat Crumble and Citrus Caramel Topping 3 1/2 2 1 1/2 1/2

tablespoons sugar teaspoon ground cinnamon Envy Apples, diced into large cubes tablespoon lemon juice cup brown sugar cup all-purpose flour

1/2 1/2 1/2 1/4 1/2 1

cup old-fashioned oats cup cold butter, diced small cup caramel teaspoon salt orange, zest only tablespoon orange juice vanilla ice cream

Preheat oven to 350 F. In bowl, stir together sugar and ground cinnamon.

Toss apples in lemon juice then in cinnamon sugar mixture. Spread in 9-inch pie dish.

In another bowl, stir together brown sugar, flour and oats. Using hands or fork, cut in butter until pea size crumbs form. Sprinkle evenly over apples.

Bake 40-45 minutes until mixture is bubbling and golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool 15 minutes.

In small pot, whisk caramel, salt, orange zest and orange juice until warm.

Spoon apple oat crumble over large scoop vanilla ice cream and top with salted citrus caramel.

Make Every Bite Count with Whole-Grain Popcorn Snacks

Blueberry and Pomegranate Power Bars Yield: 12 bars

5 cups popped popcorn 3 cups whole-grain oat cereal 1/3 cup raisins 1/3 cup peanuts or other nuts 1/3 cup sunflower seeds 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine 6 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Line 13-by-9-inch pan with foil; spray with nonstick cooking spray.

In large bowl, combine popcorn, oats, blueberries, pomegranate seeds and almonds.

In small saucepan over low heat, boil honey, brown sugar and butter 2 minutes. Pour over popcorn mixture and mix thoroughly.

Mabel Adams was sitting in the day room at the Rest of Your Life retirement home when the children came in. She smiled and so did all the others in the room except for two who didn’t know what was going on.

The old-timers in the home knew the kids were coming and had put up Christmas decorations around in the day room and on the doors of their own small apartments and on themselves. Mabel had been reminded several times by the staff that morning that the kids were coming over, this being necessary as Mabel’s memory isn’t what it used to be. And she put a sprig of imitation holly in her hair and tied a red ribbon on the other side.

The little girl smiled and walked over to Mabel.

“Are you a grandma?” she asked.

“Why, yes dear, I am.”

“I brought you a present, Grandma,” she said, handing a box to Mabel.

Mabel opened it and was delighted at the sandalwood-scented hankies inside.

“Why thank you so much, Honey!” she said. “And what is your name?”

“I’m Candice. I’m four.”

“Well, Candice, merry Christmas to you. Have you been here before?”

“Well … no, I guess. Mom said this is where the grandmas are and we can have fun bringing presents to the grandmas.”

“I see,” Mabel said. “Well, Candice, come over here, dear and let me give you a hug. There!”

Sometimes, it isn’t the cost of the hankies, or the fun wrapping them up.

Sometimes it’s just a child’s smile and a small taste of love that makes us treasure Christmas.

Apple Oat Crumble and Citrus Caramel Topping 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 Envy Apples, diced into large cubes 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats 1/2 cup cold butter, diced small 1/2 cup caramel 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 orange, zest only 1 tablespoon orange juice

vanilla ice cream Preheat oven to 350 F. In bowl, stir together sugar and ground cinnamon.

Toss apples in lemon juice then in cinnamon sugar mixture. Spread in 9-inch pie dish.

In another bowl, stir together brown sugar, flour and oats.

Using hands or fork, cut in butter until pea size crumbs form.

Sprinkle evenly over apples.

Bake 40-45 minutes until mixture is bubbling and golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool 15 minutes.

In small pot, whisk caramel, salt, orange zest and orange juice until warm.

Spoon apple oat crumble over large scoop vanilla ice cream and top with salted citrus caramel.

Bell-Issimo Brie Melt 1 round brie (6-8 ounces) 2 Envy Apples 1/4 cup walnuts 1/4 cup dried cranberries firm crackers

Unwrap brie and place on microwave-safe dish. Cut off top of brie round and microwave 60 seconds until middle is soft.

Slice apples into thick wedges.

Top brie with half the apples, crushed walnuts and dried cranberries.

Serve with firm crackers and remaining apple wedges.
