ith the start of the University term fast approaching, the dreaded ‘What do I wear on my first day?’ question will be looming and some sort of style-guru is nothing less than necessary. Leanne Lim-Walker, a stylishly proficient fashion photographer for LoveClothing and devoted blogger, has now only been part of the blogosphere since January 2013 but boy has she made her mark! With innovative and regular updates on garments, accessories, make-up ideas and anything that has sprung out and caught her eye, this fashion-saviour-stroke-trendy-genius has put together a lookbook for the perfect fresher’s wardrobe (fit for both day and night). Plus, having graduated from The Arts University Bournemouth with a degree in Photography, her knowledge of Bournemouth and how to grace its streets with style is something to admire.

T

ypically, September is the month of sunshine and this year we expect nothing different. An outfit that suits characteristically English weather – that’s plenty of sun with the occasional chill (yep, and lots of rain) – is difficult to master. Leanne, however, has picked for her first look a weatherless ensemble that looks simple and polished (and desirably flattering). A horizontally striped crop top paired with pastel pink riding pants will make any figure seem a few inches taller…and a few inches smaller. Then when the clouds are among us, a light wash denim jacket will be the perfect cover-up. With three-quarter length sleeves and beautiful rose gold buttons, this was a buy that certainly impressed Leanne: “I’ve been in need of a throw-on which isn’t too hot, something which isn’t a cardigan and I’m far too fussy to find another kimono I like. So this fitted the bill perfectly”. The outfit has great versatility; as well as being suitable for the University campus, for the many fresher events that will take place at nightfall the look can be completed with the striking Jeffrey Campbell sailboat heels. Although, they may only be a shoe for the brave… “I did fall over whilst taking these pictures” said Leann. For the accessories, think simple and opt for rose gold for the fingers and finish with a crystal necklace. 80s fashion trends have made a strong reappearance among today’s fashion, with the riding pant (and the infamous disco pant) having been and now presently ubiquitous among the ladies. So look no further, the bodacious outrageousness of the 80s is back!

harity shops are flourishing in this day and age. With their impeccably cheap price tags and donations all going to charity (funnily enough), it’s an institution that will give you a great sense of well-being…and a good bargain. You will need an open mind and some time to delve into their endless and colourful rails, but you will always be pleasantly surprised! After being heavily inspired by Sara from Waiste, Leanne took to the challenge and found a remarkable crochet knit dress at a mere price of £3.50. “Sara always has the most amazing crochet knit dresses layered up with effortless style” said Leanne. Leanne’s fourth look flawlessly imitates one that is stylishly effortless, and the layering underneath (with a plain black dress) really brings out the intricate detail of the crochet flowers and fringed hem. Plus, for one who crochets herself, Leanne was overwhelmed by the price tag: “if I tried doing this, it would take me weeks, months even. So £3.50 was an absolute steal for the amount of work put into this!” For the accessories, this outfit features a bowler hat and two different length necklaces (one of the necklaces has a ring threaded onto the chain for a great customised look). Combined with the belt – drawing the dress in for a more flattering shape – and platform 8-eyelett heeled boots, this detailed ensemble will certainly impress.

UPRAW ~ 10

“I'm falling in love with pastel green shades again. This was a favourite of mine last summer as I loved it with my then pink hair” Said Leanne.

T

he pastel green slouch crop jumper is irresistible for anyone who is to enter the tantalising store known as Topshop, and styled with riding pants in black this look seems effortless. With a burst of nostalgia, yet again the 80s is among us. “They look so lovely with all the high waisted things I wear!” Said Leanne, after explaining how charming the slouch cropped jumper will be to any customer. This look is 80s inspired sporty, but it also has a hint of ‘girly’. The white frill socks teamed with the heeled Chelsea boots adds height whilst also being undeniably cute. For the accessories, layer-up two necklaces – one short and one long – and the outfit is transformed into something suitable for all occasions.

ig is definitely beautiful. Whilst t-shirt shopping, opt for a few sizes bigger than your usual or even rummage into the men’s section. The peacock feathered print tee that Leanne has picked out (which it’s a men’s large!) is perfect for the current summer and, due to its size, can be worn in many different ways. “The material is so soft and hangs well… and tucked into something makes a world of difference” Said Leanne. A simple high waisted skater skirt in black will release the beautiful colours of the tee and, tucked in, will highlight the best parts of a ladies’ figure. Even for a more casual look, an oversized t-shirt will look great loose and will prove faultless for the current heat wave in the UK: “As it’s baggy, it makes it lovely and airy” explains Leanne. She also wanted to “style it a bit

different to the usual tee and shorts combo”, and I’m sure we’ll all agree that she has flourished. An outfit is not complete without jewellery, a bag…and a hat. So, for the accessories, a thick chained necklace will bring more attention to the neck and t-shirt design. Plus a bowler hat, which seems to be the ideal head embellishment, and a black leather rucksack and you’re all set to go! Not only are rucksacks sturdy and useful (they give you the means to have your arms free and ready greet your new friends), but they look effortlessly chic. You don’t even have to spend a fortune to get your hands on one, says Leanne: “I use this rucksack almost every day for work and it’s lasted me a year so far, well done Primark!”

or those who have taken a peek into Leanne’s Youtube posts, then you will have spotted this look from her May Lookbook. Here, she is sporting the dungaree dress with a twist: ”I wanted to rock up the dungaree dress a little so I added a classic leather jacket and my Jeffrey Campbell Foxy Spikes!” said Leanne. The dress is unlimited in its versatility. Ranging from girly to chic and edgy, this white, lightweight and simply adorable piece will be a great base for any fresher event. The dungaree – ranging from casual denims through to soft, tailored jersey styles is a 70’s revival that’s proven

UPRAW ~ 10

to be a big hit this season. Teamed with chunky cut-out boots – especially black and studded, the dungaree-look is sure to make any outfit stand out from the crowd. Yes, as per usual, the weather is unreliable but once you’ve got your hands on a classically tailored leather jacket, then you’re kitted out for any shower that comes your way. For the accessories, John Lennon has occupied this season. Becoming somewhat of a reclaimed style icon, the Lennon-inspired round shades are the ultimate statement piece. Add a gold single chain necklace to finish off the look.

A

fter attending the 90s inspired Motel Rocks and Ax Paris blogger events in London (where she was able to get her hands on – literally – some traditional and beautiful henna), I’m certain that you’ll all be wondering what Leanne chose to wear. Monochrome, of course! Black and white seems to always be the go-to colour palette. With it being the most flattering and versatile, this is a trend that will definitely be sticking around. “It seems that I love a monochrome look” Said Leanne, whose passion for monochrome is positively reflected upon this outfit. The pinstripe jeans paired with Jeffrey Campbell Litas will create an idyllic illusion of endlessly luscious legs – even for those who are less fortunate with height. So don’t be afraid to whack out the heels, especially for Jeffrey Campbell.

USH Hair & Beauty Salon can be found along Albert Road, a haven of calm and relaxation in the heart of Bournemouth Town Centre’s hectic throngs of retail therapists. Fay Cole is the lady behind the establishment; the salon a labour of love that she’s built from the ground up, and from the range of hair and beauty services on offer, to the luxurious take on a home away from home style decor, it’s clear she knows what she’s doing. The boutique environment wouldn’t feel out of place along the trendy lanes of Covent Garden, with the products used inside and the expertise of the staff using them, reflecting that high standard. Fay’s team has been carefully chosen and crafted, ensuring that each area of this salon (which manages to include hair, nail and massage treatments amongst its list of remedies and therapies on offer) is unique to the area. On paper, HUSH seems to be the one-stop-shop for all your beauty needs, so the UPRAW lot didn’t need much persuading when we were invited to pop in, meet the team, and of course try out some of the treatments for ourselves. I know... it’s hard, but someone’s got to do it!

Indulge Your Locks My hair is no stranger to the GHD’s, so Fay was pretty quick in persuading me that my ends were in decent need of the Moroccanoil Intense Hydration. The treatment is brilliant for deeply hydrating and conditioning the hair, and I was told the results of the product would be pretty instantaneous and clear to see. Fay used an array of Moroccanoil products, but it was the Restorative Hair Mask that seemed to work its magic the most. The cream was worked into my hair, and then wrapped in a warm towel and left for 7 minutes to allow the treatment to do its work. Fay’s product knowledge was impressive; explaining to me how the cream works to infuse protein back into the weakened hair, and she assured me I’d notice a difference. After the 7 minutes were up (a ridiculously short amount of time for the product to take effect) the towel was removed and the hair trimmed, blow-dried and straightened. Fay was right, my hair looking shinier and more importantly; more manageable. As someone not blessed with the easiest of hair types to work with, it was brilliant to see my hair doing what I wanted it to, and not frizzing up the moment it sensed any humidity in the air. Best of all, it lasted long after a couple of home hair-washes, and that’s a claim not a lot of salon treatments out there can make.

Body Revitalisation There’s nothing quite as effective for reducing your stress levels as being on the receiving end of a Hot Stone massage. Salon Manager and a masseur with 6 years of experience behind her, Danielle Goddard is the therapist in charge of making you forget all your worldly worries and for an hour or so, making sure you just relax. The allure of a Hot Stone massage is in the stones ability to penetrate deeper than hands alone would be able to do, relieving muscular aches and joint pains. The stones are heated in a water bath to a temperature of 55 degrees, and then used to massage your back, legs, arms and face. With the SenSpa Signature Scent Oil that HUSH uses (a blend of essential oils), the room is filled with an array of beautiful scents, combined with intimate soft lighting and relaxing music, to make the whole experience as peaceful as possible. By the end our UPRAW volunteer had no complaints, and with the vast array of other therapies Danielle is skilled in, it’s a brilliant way to regain some of the serenity alluding so many of us in our day-to-day chaotic lives.

A Mini Masterpiece Jessica Johnson is HUSH’s uber talented nail technician, who’s made a bit of a name for herself in Bournemouth with her nail art and flair for the creative. She’s comfortable with a multitude of different nail products and treatments, and is more than happy to come up with a unique design for your nails, if you at least roughly know what you’re looking for. For our visit she choose to use Jessica Geleration; a hybrid between gel and polish which offers a fantastic colour that doesn’t chip or peel and dries in seconds. Perfect for those of you that want to be able to pop in for a quick treat amidst a hectic day of running around. The Geleration also lasts for up to 3 weeks, ideal for holidays or if you just plain don’t have the time to be popping into the salon every week. The design and shaping of the nails were left up to Jessica’s imagination, and she went with a pointed nail, painted ashy grey with plenty of glitter and sparkles on each tip to just lift the colour a bit. Geleration can be removed in minutes by soaking the nails in a special solution, meaning the nails don’t get damaged or stained by the polish, which can often the downside to treating yourself to a manicure.

his look was inspired by the earthy, rich colour palette that was seen all over the catwalks for AW13.Its quite versatile and can be worn just as easily during the day as it can be at night. I began the eyes by applying a base of “Rubanesque’ Paintpot and blending ‘copper sparkle’ paintpot on top to really make the colours pop. In this picture I have also patted some gloss creme brilliance eye gloss on top using my finger to give it a gorgeous sheen and to add dimension. The gloss does tend to move a little so I would use it sparingly for a night out, although I do think its worth the effort !! I finished with a touch of zoom lash mascara and contoured the cheeks with a little Powder Blush in ‘Harmony’.

his is a great way of accentuating the shape of your eyes, especially if they are hiding behind a heavy fringe, by creating a smouldering feline flick.... I started by lightly buffing ‘Cordury’ eyeshadow all over the eyelid, into the socket and through the lower lashes to create a soft smoky effect. I then elongated the lashline out using Blacktrack gel eyeliner to create a winged effect. The longer and thicker you choose to do the line the more dramatic the effect, but always remember to elongate the natural shape of your eyes with a gently elevated line rather than curling the flick up too much at the ends, it is much more flattering. I finIshed the liner by drawing along the inside rim of the eye with ‘smoulder’ pencil and smoking it out underneath with a small blending brush. This gives the whole look a sexier, cooler edge and stops it looking too graphic.

his look is all about fresh faced natural beauty, perfect for the morning after the night before! The skin should look healthy and luminous, not too made up so I used MAC Studio moisture tint as my base concealing on top only where needed. I then added a creamy pop of colour by patting ‘hush’ cream colour base onto the apples of the cheeks and a little on the lips for extra sheen.

T

To make the eyes look bright and wide awake I began by curling the lashes and layering MAC False lash mascara on top. Be sure to get right into the roots when applying mascara,as this will help hold the curl, and zig zag the wand right through to the tips coating every lash. Finally, finish the look by framing the eyes with full, youthful brows. Brush brows into shape and fill in any gaps using MAC lingering brow pencil in feathery strokes for a more natural effect, keeping everything in place with a sweep of brow set fix.

his is a great statement look for a night out. Again, I would say with this look it is best to keep the skin fresh so that the whole look doesn’t become too theatrical...I chose to do a statement lip using MAC ‘Darkside’ lipstick. Start by using MAC ‘Currant’ lip pencil to define the shape first and then to fill in the lip to give a good solid base, helping the lipstick stay in place. When doing a lip liner, I like to start with the cupid’s bow and centre of the bottom lip and then bring the line up and out from the corners to complete the outline. Your wrist will naturally create an arc when working upwards, giving you a fuller, more rounded shape. This is especially important when working with darker colours like this as they can sometimes make the lips look smaller. When you have gotten the shape you desire and filled in with pencil, use a lip brush to layer the lipstick on top. As I wanted to keep the lips as the main focus, I simply lined the inner waterline of the eyes using ‘Smoulder’ eye pencil and smoked it out with ‘swiss chocolate’ powder shadow for a warmer effect. Finish with plenty of mascara to open up the eyes.

Sitting in the Lexus showroom in Poole, there is a tangible feeling of sophistication and affluence. Across the road on the quay, Sunseeker super yachts are being crafted for their jet-set owners and the forecourt next door showcases an Aston Martin DB9 with the sun glinting off the glossy metal.

T

he new Lexus IS range sits pride of place in the garage, with both the IS 250 and the IS 300 gleaming on the reflecting marble floors. First impressions are, well; impressive. The IS 250 has the size you would expect from a sporty four-door saloon – the long bonnet with angular lines conceals the V6 that lies underneath. The new IS 250 features a much more chiselled jaw than its predecessor with a spindle grill that stretches from the bonnet to the bumper. Far from making the car look like a slack-jawed yokel or a basking shark, the shape of the large mouth works well to give the IS 250 a sportier, more intimidating appearance.

53

J

oining us for a test drive of the IS 250 F-Sport is AFC Bournemouth’s Tommy Elphick who gets some brief guidance on the cars computer as he gets behind the wheel. The response to the buttons feel seamless thanks to the electrostatic controls on the dash, the same technology powering touchscreen smartphones. The seats are comfortable, with the tell-tale firmness of a car with the potential to throw you around. The centre console allows you to flick between settings to firm up the suspension for sport mode.

The football captain looks perfectly at home behind the wheel, settling in well to the prominent driving position. “There’s a quality feel to the components” he remarks whilst cruising leisurely alongside the quay. “The computer’s pretty easy to get used to,” toying with the systems mouse and display. The 25-year-old from Brighton gives the throttle a little juice now we’re away from the harbour and the IS 250’s 2.5-litre automatic gearbox replies in haste as the car gathers speed and we’re pushed back into the firm leather seats.

Pulling out of the forecourt, the automatic gearbox is smooth and the noise coming from the V6 is kept to a minimum as you would expect from a Lexus. The company has long had the reputation of being an executive, sensible option; a reliable Japanese car, with the luxury of a Mercedes, but little of the theatrics. All that changed at the turn of the century when Lexus started hinting at their new direction with glimpses of new concept cars. The Lexus LFA was revealed in 2009; a two-seater sports car with a V10 engine and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic to cut down on weight. The bold looks of the LFA came with limited availability (only 500 were made) and an eye-watering price tag of £343,000. It’s clear Lexus are continuing their line of sportier models with the IS 250 and its muscular frame.

The clarity of the single combination meter is excellent, with the car’s speed inside the digital rev counter, inspired by the LFA’s powerful V10. The gadgets don’t stop there; a camera in the rear of the car provides parking assistance as you view what you’re reversing towards. A very handy feature when parking sensors can’t distinguish the difference between a brick wall and some outstanding branches from a hedge. From the IS 250’s computer you can access Google Street View so you know what to expect when trying to find an elusive address. You can even forward a route from your laptop straight to the car so you’re ready to go from the moment you close the computer from the comfort of your sofa.

Lexus are certainly pulling out the stops to open up their business to the tech savvy younger generations, putting it in the same ranks as its German rivals. The car feels alert and responsive and not particularly cumbersome for a vehicle with a healthy amount of room for passengers in the rear. There’s enough room in the boot for the all-important golf clubs - a smart move on Lexus’ part as they would certainly be shooting themselves in the foot for not looking after the needs of their customers of old, before the manufacturers face-lift. The young football star does not look out of place behind the wheel of the IS 250. The strong aesthetics will certainly appeal to a more contemporary group but the reputation of the badge will still encourage the more rational driver. Lexus have certainly struck the balance between offering a car that can compete on the sports saloon circuit, but has not alienated their existing customers.

The Lexus IS 300 features similar looks to the 250, but with a Hybrid Drive engine – perhaps to appeal to the London commuter, or company car market. With congestion charges and road tax high, the hybrid drive offers a low emission alternative to the 250 with a more green than grunt outlook. Lexus being Toyota’s executive division of the Japanese giant, you can certainly rely on them for reliability. The overall sense of the car is one of functional luxury with elements of sporting pedigree, distilled from the mighty success of the LFA but this one will not break the bank, and has room for the essential golf clubs. The Lexus IS 250 is a substantial competitor among the Audis, BMWs and Mercedes that have become fairly commonplace on the roads of Britain. The Lexus offers the same build quality as its adversaries but comes with a little more exclusivity, which might be its best asset and the biggest reason for buying one.

P

addle boarding has taken water enthusiasts by storm, this might be because it is apparently easier to stand up on than a surfboard- or judging by my inability- it may be due to the empty promise of waves further down the coastline. Regardless, it is an ancestor of the surfboard which originated in Polynesia as an easier way to get to and from the islands and has become a recent craze in Sandbanks, amongst the many popular sports available at The Watersports Academy.

The Academy, nestled between Sandbanks beach and Poole harbour started out 9 years ago in a porter-cabin with just one kayak and six wind surfs. Now they are the main go-to place for anyone of any age who wants to learn

how to surf, sail, kite-surf, water-ski, wakeboard, windsurf and of course paddleboard. Naturally, we ask manager Dave if he can take us for an afternoon sail on the forty-four foot yacht, but it is surprisingly popular at this time of year! So we try our skills at paddle boarding and windsurfing instead, “Since celebrities like Will Smith and Nicole Murphy have been seen on a paddle board, everyone wants to do it; it’s a great way to keep fit;” Dan assures us. I am quite wary that I won’t look as glamorous as Nicole Murphy in my pink wetsuit, buoyancy aid and rash vest.

Whilst making our way to the harbour side of the Academy, our instructor Misty, who has been windsurfing since a very young age, tells us “It’s really simple - you just stand on the board and

paddle yourself along, and then ride in with the waves.” She convinces us that we will be standing on both the wind surf and paddleboard by the end of the session. Thankfully, there is only a small breeze and less chance of bumping into any pros, or worse- drowning! On a windy day, the harbour is packed with brightly coloured kite and windsurfers, performing sequences of tricks and jumps on the waves. The area is a hot spot for windsurf fanatics and home to Wind Fest- a three day festival where action-sports-pros from across the UK demonstrate their skills at Kite-surfing, wind surfing, wake boarding and paddle boarding at the end of summer.

Surprisingly larger than a surf board, the paddle board is wide, hollow and very light, and so it sits slightly out of the water. Misty tells us we have to stand where our weight is evenly balanced and use the paddle give maximum power. Before long we’re heading across the harbour, you have to head at right angles to the waves so you don’t fall off. It’s hard not to tense everything, but you eventually learn to relax and feel like you can glide for miles. It’s so much fun!

UPRAW ~ 10

Dave the Manager, is right- Wind surfing is a lot harder to get the knack of than paddle boarding. He tells us that one of his favourite regulars, Chris, is eighty years old, blind in one eye and practically a pro! I have a feeling this will put us to shame. We exchange the paddle board for a windsurf and drag it through the shallows with the sail lagging behind. First of all, Misty shows us how to stand in the safety position. We learn how to keep balance in the middle of the board whilst holding onto the sail’s mast. It’s a challenge to keep the sail stood up-right for most of the time. Meanwhile an experienced windsurfer glides past at about 30 MPH, effortlessly.

M

isty then teaches us how to change direction on the board. This requires us to cross-over our arms and master the foot-work; with practice we start to get the knack and pick up speed. “The record speed for a windsurf is around 50 miles per hour once you learn to “plane” on top of the water.” Says Misty. As I get into it, I can see why the Watersports Academy is so popular, there is a great variety of sports to choose from- you could spend a whole weekend learning new

skills and trying them out. “We get all sorts of groups going on the chartered yacht day trips and trying out the watersports activities, from corporate events to hen and stag do’s we cater for them all.” Says Dave. Although the

Kid’s Watersports Club is bursting at the seams during summer, Dave tells us Kite-surfing and Windsurfing are really popular during the Winter. No matter what the weather, there is always an excuse to get wet!

e here at UpRaw love any excuse to make some noise, so when Rachel and Justin, lovely married couple tobe and founders of the brand new Bournemouth School of Music in Pokesdown invited us over for a tour of their establishment, and even a cheeky little lesson, we just couldn’t say no. With their team of seven teachers, they’re well equipped to cater for any of your instrumental needs. From ukulele to double bass, voice or theory lessons, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what it is you next want to become a virtuoso in. Best of all, they have a range of teaching styles to suit anyone, so whether you fancy yourself as the next Jimmy Page, or perhaps see yourself as more of a Beethoven type, they’ll help you get there. Justin’s background is in touring and gigging. Having a dad as a professional musician meant music was the norm growing up, but Justin took it upon himself to learn the guitar, and so favours a more fluid approach to teaching, “I’m just really in love with the way music makes you feel. I’ve been gigging all my life, travelled around the world, and I’ve found that music is always a great communicator of feeling. That’s what playing music is all about.” When it comes to teaching, Justin knows it’s not just about the technical side. The fulfilment he and Rachel have gotten from music is something they both want to share with the people that walk through their school doors. “It’s especially great to teach kids, because you feel like you’re giving them something to enjoy and aim for, but also helping open their brain up to things outside the academia of the classroom.”

Lots of us will have picked up an instrument as a child, either under mum and dad’s determination or as something we were curious about ourselves. And a few of us will have experienced those Miss. Trunchbull-esque teachers who, instead of helping you gain in confidence, manage to put the fear of god in you so that every lesson becomes something you dread. Rachel had a teacher like that, who originally put her off piano playing, so she knows the importance of being a good teacher, “Thankfully, she didn’t put me off playing all together, but it definitely does have an effect. Our team has such a varied array of talents and skills; we know we can fit the student to the perfect teacher.” It also helps that Rachel’s been teaching since she was 17, so it’s safe to say she has a good idea of how to be effective in the classroom. Having played the flute since she was ten, and then going on to learn saxophone and clarinet, she can take students from Grade 1 up to Diploma level, and promises that age or playing standard are not going to be barriers for any potential students. She even managed to get me to play the oh-so-iconic opening notes to Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Baker Street’ on the saxophone in a manner of minutes which, let me tell you, is no mean feat. Apart from the fully equipped and sound-proofed classrooms on offer, there’s a rehearsal space for local bands to use, and plans for a recording studio in their cellar. The couple also want to open up a communal coffee area at the front of the school, aimed at encouraging the people of Pokesdown to come in for a chat, and hopefully energize the band scene in the area. With the constantly evolving creative atmosphere that Pokesdown has going on right now, it seems the Bournemouth School of Music are going to fit right in.

T

he skate scene has boomed in the last few years. Partly due to the resurgence of Penny boards which have become a must-have amongst the younger generation. The plastic cruiser boards seen mostly under the arms of both girls and boys around town have added to the growing number of longboarders. Skateboarding in its most conventional form however continues on, surpassing fads. Skateboarding in Bournemouth cannot be discussed without mentioning the towns skating Mecca - the Consortium Store. The shop has been gracing the skate scene since 1993 and offers a choice selection of contemporary skate apparel, shoes and hardware. The store also employs some of the best skaters in the area. Upraw caught up the guys at Consortium to talk skate spots. Kings Park is regarded as the meeting ground for many of Bournemouth’s wood pushers. The skatepark has a couple of bowls, a few boxes, kickers and a rail or two. It’s a sure fire bet of meeting others down there without having to arrange anything. From there you pretty much have the run of the whole area. For all of Bournemouth’s sought-after characteristics; smooth pavements aren’t one. Unfortunately for skaters, this means it’s a ball ache just getting from A to B. Skaters often plan their routes and all their local geographical knowledge around fresh tarmac, free from obstacles lying in wait to fling you off your board and onto your face.

73

Street skating is aptly named as it predominantly takes place on the streets. Finding ledges, stair sets natural kickers and obstacles in just about any form drives the skaters to become creative. The Square in Bournemouth town centre is one of the best places to hone your flip tricks and manuals thanks to the super smooth marble surface. Maccy D’s is within spitting distance and there’s always an audience making their way to bars in the evening, but beware the mob that descents there during the day and the bright red adorned ‘town rangers’ who don’t seem to do anything other than tell skaters not to skate and cyclists not to cycle. A day in the life of a street skater in Bournemouth is finding a crusty old ledge in the back of an alley, then a barrier to hippie jump over and a tree in the gardens to

UPRAW ~ 10

ride up. The Council need to do a little more consultation with their skating constituents and build skate parks with open silky-smooth concrete flat land areas and a few boxes and rails without straight away planning a multi-million pound earthworks project to make room for bowls and pipes. Consortium is the hub for the skating scene in Bournemouth. It’s the go-to place for everything skate related, and luckily for the skaters, is also kept in business by the skate fashionistas that enjoy the contemporary and unique clothing from awesome brands normally only available on the internet. However; surpassing the fashion and the culture which makes skating so iconic is the simplicity of hanging around with your mates in the outdoors, landing the next trick or finding the next spot.

75

TOP 5 SKATE SPOTS Kings Park where the locals meet. Bournemouth Square and its marbley goodness. Prevail Skatehouse where you won’t get rained on. Boscombe Seafront and its fresh tarmac. The secret spots where you’ll have to infiltrate the Consortium guys to find.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I get a lot of my inspiration from the past. I love using old photos that I collect from family, markets and second hand book shops in my work. I like editing the hell out of them and making them look weird and almost futuristic. I am in love with postmodern design movements like Memphis Milano and all the other weird stuff that came along around that time, that’s where I get my love of bright colours and angular shapes! I have also obviously been inspired by my surroundings through growing up in London, as well as by my friends and family. Cliche, but i’m a bit of a Magpie when it comes to the way I work and where I get my ideas from.

When and how did you first get into illustration? I kind of just fell into Illustration. I always thought I’d study textiles or something similar at Uni, but I was advised during my Foundation diploma at AUB to go onto the BA Illustration course, so I just went with the flow and thought I’d give it a go (enjoy my accidental rhyme)…it seems to be working out!

We’ve seen your amazing collaboration with fashion designer Kimberly Adam, is fashion design where you would like to end up? So happy you like it! The prints I did with Kim were my first ever attempt at print design, and I loved it!! But I never thought they would get such a great response or get into Graduate Fashion Week! Like I said before, I always thought I’d do textiles or something at Uni or give it a go in later life and it has oddly happened quite

tumblr: francaillustrates.tumblr.com website: francaillustrates.com

naturally. Kim and I are planning on eventually starting our own brand, but that won’t be for a long while yet! I would love to have the type of career that allows me to try all sorts of different things, so I have no clue where I’d like to end up!

What has been the piece that you’re most proud of? I am massively proud of the prints I designed for my collaboration with Kim, but a massive turning point and proud moment was working on the refurbishment of my brothers bar The Hoxton Pony in East London. I had to design 4 illustrations to go around the venue on a huge scale, as well as revamp their tables and toilets! I spent the first sunny day of the year in the men’s toilets, and THEY HADN’T BEEN CLEANED! That’s dedication. It made me realise that I can actually be professional and run a project.

Who’s your favourite illustrator? My favourite illustrator who I have admired throughout Uni is Victoria Topping. She makes these beautiful colourful unusual images, and I would just love to be able to sit down next to her and watch her work!

If you were given a pen and paper right now, what would you doodle? I’d probably doodle a face…I always draw faces. No idea why, I just make them up and they are usually old wrinkly men. I think I might have a problem.

he Mandarin Chinese restaurant sits in the middle of Old Christchurch Road in the heart of Bournemouth. It has been owned by Mark Luke who has been joined by manager David, for the last 25 years. Before this, the owner was Mark’s father who opened The Mandarin in the late 1960’s, making it one of Bournemouth’s oldest restaurants. The Mandarin has taken Chinese food, something that we’re all familiar with, and modernised it, creating a delicious Asian fusion menu that’s enjoyed in a super sleek setting of red and black décor, with Asian art furnishing the restaurant and lounge area.

eal thought has gone into every detail of the recently redecorated restaurant, from the decorative fish that swim behind the bar to the beautiful granite tables, some with a spinning centre for sharing dishes, and the spotlights which illuminate each table giving an intimate dining experience to couples and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere for groups. There are lots of exciting and delicious eating options at The Mandarin, (which seats 120 guests) and the chefs are more than happy to accommodate everyone’s own tastes. If you want the Squid, but with the sauce from the Szechuan style Sea Bass, that’s no problem, don’t like something? It can be taken out of your meal. You can even ask for a dish that’s not on the menu and the kitchen will do its best to oblige. When Upraw took a trip to The Mandarin, we shared a chef’s combination of appetisers with: Garlic Salt and Pepper Squid, Crystal King Prawns, Crispy Seaweed, Barbequed Spare Ribs and Szechuan Style Smoked Chicken. Being massive seafood fans we particularly enjoyed the squid and the prawns which were cooked to perfection, and it’s safe to say that the only thing left on the plate once we’d finished was the carrot, delicately carved into the shape of a Coy Carp!

A take away and delivery service is also available with 15% off on all collections, students also get a 15% discount on all eat in and take out options with a valid student card. You’re also welcome to sit and relax after a hard day in the comfortable lounge area and enjoy drinks and light bites from the well-stocked bar, where there is a wide selection of wines and beers from around the world, try Japanese rice wine: Sake, or a pint of the draft beer: Tiger, and on selected Friday nights throughout the year you can do all this while listening to live music. We’d also advise you to keep your eyes peeled, and your ears to the ground to find out about the upcoming Anniversary Champagne Reception with running buffet at The Mandarin, the date is to be confirmed but details will be released on their Facebook page closer to the event, so head over there and give it a like so you don’t miss out!

The Tapas Lunch is served between 12pm and 2pm, and dinner between 6pm and 11.30pm. The Oriental Tapas is served at each dish for £2.95 or choose three dishes for £7.50. On Sunday there is an Eat as Much as You Like lunch buffet between 12pm and 2.30pm for only £9.95, (children eat for half price).

pen for just over five years now and owned by Mark Cribb, (who also owns boutique Bournemouth hotel Urban Beach) Urban Reef is a place to chill out with friends and family, be served by some of the friendliest staff we’ve ever met, eat, drink and be very merry. After a tasty breakfast of smoothies, and pancakes topped with berry preserve and maple syrup, (yum!) we sat down with General Manager, Chris Warwick who told us just how passionate Urban Reef are about the locally sourced produce that goes into making their Restaurant, Bar and Deli as successful as it is.

cakes, baked in house by baker Kay. (Who also takes orders if you’re looking for something in particular?) Kay does all of the baking for Urban Reef, from the sandwich bread to the cakes and every pasty, pork pie and sausage roll in between, which you can eat on the premises or buy to take home, and believe me, you’re going to want to take something home.

Chris says: “We source from people, not companies because we like to have a relationship with our suppliers. We do it because we love food.” Urban Reef are so dedicated to ensuring that only the best ingredients go into their food they’ve rented land on a farm in Sopley in the New Forest, where they grow seasonal produce to use in their restaurant and bar, including the strawberries in their home made lemonade, the mint in the mojito’s, the beetroot in the Goat’s cheese curd starter, and the zucchinis that are wrapped around the very delicious Plaice fillets. The food is 20 minutes from farm to chef so you know that what you’re eating is not only local, but as fresh as it can be too! This isn’t just limited to fruit and veg; the seafood is local and one supplier: ‘Dave the egg’ provides, as you can imagine, all of the eggs for the restaurant. Urban Reef actually own their own chickens which Dave looks after and gives updates on how they’re feeling and laying! In addition to the bar and restaurant, the ground floor also boasts an impressively stocked deli where, amongst other things, you can buy your own eggs, Dorset tea and honey, Aspall’s balsamic and cyder vinegars, and

The bar leads to an outside decked seating area where you’re right on the beach; there is a wide selection of wines, beers, ciders and cocktails, most popular being Urban Pomms, a summery drink with a secret recipe. Ask for the bar snack menu if you’re feeling a bit peckish, here you’ll find delicious baked goods such as feta and walnut pasty, hand raised pork pie and a selection of breads from super baker Kay.

I

f you fancy something more than a snack, you can move upstairs to the restaurant where you can sit inside, up on the mezzanine, or out on the balcony and choose from the café menu which runs from noon until 5pm and includes Urban Reef favourite (and maybe ours too) Cornish Mussels which come in either a white wine, or a galangal and yellow Thai sauce. Or, if you’re about in the evening, from 6pm the evening menu kicks in with lots of local seafood dishes like the delicious Plaice fillets, which come stuffed with smoked salmon mousse and wrapped in zucchinis, or the most popular dish: The West Country beef burger, which comes with smoked bacon, red coleslaw, haystack cheddar cheese and onion marmalade.

UPRAW ~ 10

Whatever you choose, your meal will come out looking and tasting perfect. The attention to detail at Urban Reef is incredible, it’s everywhere you turn, from Kay’s cakes, and the Urban Deli, to the beach hut décor and every single plate that comes out of the kitchen. And as if all the good food, drink, and beautiful views weren’t enough, you can enjoy live music every Wednesday evening, with chilled out acoustic sets to entertain you while you eat, and a quiz night on a Thursday, which starts at 7.30pm and costs £1 to enter. This is no boring pub quiz however, expect rock and roll bingo, obstacle courses on the beach and a tug of war to determine the winning team!

ecent years have seen the oh-soBritish-dish of curry get some serious competition in the fight to be crowned the nation’s favourite. Chinese has grown in popularity with mammoth speed, and hot on its heels comes Thai, ready to offer you all the flavour and spice you’d expect from your local curry house, but without the hefty calories.

So with that in mind, we set about getting stuck-in to the variety of dishes laid out before us. With Thai food, the first thing to hit your senses is the smell; aromas and spices that showcase the vast geographical and culinary differences of the country from the Chinese influences of the North, to the rich heat and chilli of the South.

We UK residents have gathered a real penchant for travelling the globe over the last decade or so, with Thailand continuing to be a top destination for anyone wanting to experience an earthly beauty akin to the garden of Eden, at extremely palatable prices.

I was therefore immediately attracted to the Deep-Fried Squid. With a salty fried garlic and chopped chilli garnishing the top of the rings, it was impossible to stop my hand going back for more. Having wiped that plate clean (with some impressive help from a certain UpRaw editor) it was on to the Aromatic Duck, bathed in a tamarind sauce.

And this obsession with Southeast Asia hasn’t gone un-noticed by Bournemouth’s culinary scene. There are a few top establishments offering their own unique takes on the country’s gastronomy, but for the perfect blend of contemporary opulence with the highest quality food, it has to be Tiien. It’s a restaurant I’ve visited before, and I always find it to be the perfect place to go with a group of friends; the menu offering the ideal array of dishes to pick and choose from, and then simply share amongst your table. The only danger lies in making sure you don’t go too overboard with the ordering; the menu is extensive and there’s so much that’s bound to catch your eye, you do have to remind yourself that it’s not feasible to try all the dishes in one sitting.

The meat was juicy and sweet, the sauce adding notes of slight sourness that made for a beautiful combination. At this point I should also say that portions aren’t weak either, with any moaning about wanting more squid or duck down more to our personal greed than any shortcomings in the servings. The mixed starter, which we enjoyed along with our mains, offered a selection of spring rolls, barbecued chicken wings, chicken satay, prawn toasts and fish cakes, all served with a peanut sauce, sweet chilli sauce and fresh cucumber salsa. It’s everything you would expect and so much more.

We’ve all experienced those dodgy prawn toasts you get with your Chinese takeaway, or the spring rolls that have approximately two shreds of spring onion and one of carrot inside. Tiien’s starter showed how those wellknown appetisers can be enjoyed, and it’ll be a challenge to find anything that compares from now on. But for me, most enjoyable was the combination of the Pla Tord Lard Prik, a crispy fish fillet in sweet and sour chilli garlic sauce, with the assorted vegetables, stir-fried in oyster sauce. Vegetables, when cooked just right so that they still maintain their crispness, are pretty

hard to beat. Add to that the beautiful soft and flaky fish, with a source that complimented but never overpowered the meat, and you have my favourite flavours of the whole dining experience. From the moment you step through Tiien’s doors; being greeted by the friendly staff in traditional Thai garb, surrounded by a beautifully thought out decor of dark wood panels and a wealth of lit candles glimmering amongst the walls, it’s easy to relax into the serene ambience of the establishment. But it’s the food that will permanently stamp the name Tiien in your mind, making it a restaurant that demands being visited again and again.

alking through the front doors of Cheese and Alfies you are instantly exposed to a friendly, unique and vibrant atmosphere- the eclectic selection of décor and friendly staff epitomises the local essence of the quaint historic Christchurch town. It is difficult to walk past without peeking in to see what exciting treats are in store. One’s attention is instantly drawn to a creative variety of gigantic sponge cakes and a poster on the wall that says ‘ WORK HARD and be nice to people.” This is certainly reflected in the spirit of Cheese and Alfies, whose owner Mike has been in catering for 20 years and has a “natural passion for hard work”. His business philosophy is “funky and quirky with the right emphasis on food without being too pretentious”. The exquisite selection of freshly cooked food all day and night, at honest and reasonable prices, serves as an invitation to everyone. They recently

had a family drive from Guilford because they couldn’t resist a famous Cheese and Alfie’s pan breakfast. We instantly tucked into the Pan breakfast concoction- a notorious day-time favourite served in a cast iron skillet. “The beauty of it is that we try to make it as healthy as possible,” says Owner Mike Calvert. “We don’t fry our food and if you look in the pan, we use butcher’s sausages, free range egg, fresh tomatoes and the icing on the cake is the home-made boston beans.” Chef Joe cooks them from scratch with molasses, Worchester sauce, mustard, onions with pork in the beansthey are irresistible. Mike says; “The menu is very English and I’m proud of it!” Another great morning favourite appears to be Pan Haggerty, famous for its cure for hangovers offers a mixture of sautéed potatoes with ham and gruyere cheese topped with fried egg, totally delicious.

T

he open plan kitchen exposes Joe the Chef, so diners can witness his art in the making- the aromas of fresh local produce sweep through the restaurant adding to its warm hearty atmosphere. And five year old Alfie’s mischievous grin proves to be another key ingredient to the business. “It’s one thing for diners to meet the owner, says Mike; “but to meet the namesake of a restaurant is another thing’. The name originates from owners Mike and Sarah’s two sons, Alfie and Charley (otherwise known as Cheese or Charley Cheesecake by his friends and teachers). Mike says; “People hear Cheese and Alfies and smile- it’s great- my job is done’. This strong family essence makes it impossible to question the amount of loyal custom his business receives. Indulging into a scrumptious Blueberry and Whitechocolate cheesecake- it is no wonder why Cheese has become a “local celebrity”. Mike explains; “We have Cheesecake changes 2 or 3 times a week, the chefs have to constantly come up with new incarnations of different flavours. We have gone through the entire Cadburys repertoire!’ It’s also the Carrot Cake which gets people rushing through the door after receiving their daily cake update on Facebook! Mike explicitly makes clear on his menu that everyone must make room for desert, so naturally we devour the cheesecake and a ginormous fresh fruit Pavlova (larger than my face!) before tucking into the evening specials.

Chef, Joe Boiling’s history of cooking in the Michelin star restaurant Sir Charles Napier in Oxford, is notable in his attention to detail. Since he joined Cheese and Alfies in October 2012, he has carefully crafted the evening diner menu. We had the luxury of tasting wild sea bass, caught the day before by a local fisherman off the Isle of Wight. Accompanied with spinach, champ and south coast crayfish bisque making the perfect combo. Followed by Bevette steak with Café de Paris butter, watercress and fries. The steak, sourced from a local butcher in Poole and cooked medium to rare, had a perfect juicy texture and flavour. The restaurant upstairs and downstairs is buzzing with tourists and locals in the midst of August. Mike says; “We are lucky to have a lot of tourists but the locals are very important to us- one fell into a conversation about Cheese and Alfies whilst holidaying in Italy, they came back home to have their holiday reunion here. The local recommendations travel very far!” Mike and Joe also teach a monthly cookery class to share their passion with like minded people, “having 8 to 12 people cooking a 3 course meal that don’t know each other is great because the food brings them together.” Laughs Mike.

107

The menu also includes a tasty selection of burgers, the list originates from the Humble Big Cheese- they now offer 2 for 1 promotions on Tuesdays. The famous Big Cheese’s Big Brother Burger is made to order on the premises- otherwise known as The Man Vs Food Challenge, encompassing four lots of fries, one huge 30oz burgers tomatoes and salad. At £39.95 each only 2 people out of 49 have succeeded the challenge of devouring the meal single-handedly in 45 minutes. The champions receive it all for free and earn a place on the wall of fame. Not only does Cheese and Alfies celebrate meat, they juxtapose traditional idealist vegetarian dishes; “I find it condescending if you make food for vegetarians and try to make it look like meat” Says Mike, “The best example is a veggie burger- instead we make a Veg Stack. We take peppers, aubergines, courgettes sweet potatoes, mushrooms- all with a rounded shape- we cut them, grill them and stack them up. You’ve got the flavour in there and they are not adulterated. It is what it should be”.

UPRAW ~ 10

The million dollar question that I ask Mike and Sarah is “Are there plans to open another Cheese and Alfies?” Mike hesitates; “I would love to but until someone comes up with the 14 day week it’s almost impossible- I either need to clone myself or open a place next door because you have got to put so much of your personality into something like this. “ There is a different story engrained into the tiny details and souvenirs on display; even including the community bookshelf. “It’s not about building a huge empire- it’s about hearing the little stories about your business that brings it together.” Says Mike. Even by ensuring that 50 pence proceeds from offering water are sent to The Kileva Foundation, helping remote villages in Kenya, Cheese and Alfies definitely encompasses a strong community vibe that is certainly difficult to dilute.

o first things first; my mum’s Caribbean, which means that when it comes to Caribbean food from a restaurant, I always have the advantage/curse of having her home cooking to compare it to. It’s an advantage because it means I know how true Caribbean food should taste, so don’t be trying to bring me any dry chicken or poorly seasoned goat, because I will know. It’s a curse because my mum unfortunately thus far doesn’t offer a delivery service, so unless I’m at home I don’t get her food, and the standards she’s set are hard to match. But Rhumbar, in this case, have exceeded the highest of expectations. On the day that the Upraw team came avisiting, the kitchen was being manned by Head Chef Floyd and Sue Chef Daniel. Hailing from Jamaica and Haiti respectively, they were both as chatty and warm as you’d expect (without too much forcing of cultural stereotypes!) and were more than happy to chat about what they do as well as lending their lovely faces to a few camera snaps. These good vibes are something that permeates through the whole of Rhumbar’s restaurant. From the fun and themed decor, to the a-mazing soundtrack; in my humblest of opinions you can never play Kevin Lyttle too many times, and the chatty and friendly staff, it’s all about the relaxed atmosphere at Rhumbar, it was certainly a pleasure to be welcomed through the door by the Rhumbar team!

The food continues the trend for simple and laid back excellence, packed to the brim with a flavoursome punch full of spice. We started off with Island favourites; the Curry Goat and Jerk Chicken, both served with a hearty portion of rice n peas. The goat had obviously been given a decent amount of time to marinate in its spices, which is the clincher when it comes to making sure the meat is flavoursome and not gamey, and then slow cooked so that each bite was lovely and tender. The Hot Jerk Chicken, another healthy portion of two chicken thighs, rice n peas and some accompanying Rasta Greens went down just as well. No one at the table was afraid of a bit of heat, which meant that the bit of ‘umph’ given to the chicken was massively appreciated, and a special mention has to be given to the greens. Spring onions, mixed bell peppers and Rhumbar’s secret all purpose seasoning combined to make veggies that were anything but bland. Every time Upraw do a food review, there’s one dish that’s a unanimous favourite. You know the type of dish I mean; a silent war takes place as people try to get as much of the food off the plate as they can, and you begrudgingly watch as the person opposite you manages to have the last bite. Well, this time that dish was the BBQ Jerk Ribs. Baby back ribs marinated in Rhumbar’s own glaze, slow roasted and chargrilled, served with seasoned waffle fries and homemade fried

113

dumpling. The meat fell off the bone, juicy and moreish, and the dumplings were lovely with the dish, and just as great for mopping up the left over gravy from the curried goat.

Just enough room was left for dessert, so we went for the Mango Heart; a mango sorbet and coconut ice-cream with fruit on the top, a great pallet cleanser after all the different flavours the mains had offered. The Hot Cake of the Day (for us Chocolate Fudge and coconut ice cream) was a slightly heavier option, but would be perfect for those days when you just want to give yourself that bit more of an extra treat.

115

Rhumbar’s got an exciting events calendar coming up, with Rum Sundays looking like a brilliant way to keep the summer vibes going long after the sunny days have disappeared. For the final Sunday of every month you can help yourself to a Caribbean buffet, whilst enjoying the tracks being laid down by DJs from the Rhumbar team and Afrodisiac Radio; a great alternative to your usual Sunday Roast. The restaurant also boasts a rum based cocktail menu, so you can enjoy the Islands’ national drink in all its glorious varieties, and with Christmas the next big thing coming up on the calendar, Rhumbar would be a great place to head for a Xmas party with a twist. Most importantly of all, I’ll definitely be bringing my mum here, and Rhumbar believe me when I say; I could give you no bigger compliment than that.

uess who’s back, back again… No it’s not Slim Shady this time, but Orange Rooms! That’s right, the retro inspired bar, eatery and cocktail lounge is back in Bournemouth to twin its Southampton sister. The brand new three floor bar can be found on Holdenhurst Road next to the Old Firestation, and is set to be one of the most popular places in Bournemouth. With its fun and sometime surprising décor, gourmet burgers and retro drink menus, Orange Rooms is one place in Bournemouth that you do not want to miss out on. Open from 12pm, food at Orange Rooms is all about quality, fun and deliciousness! Gourmet burgers, hot dogs, nachos, salads and wraps are all on the menu and you can even pre order your meal if you only get a short lunch break, or get

your food to go in the handy food boxes. Go for something recognisable like the Moo Moo Burger, a classic 6oz beef burger, or how about something you might never have tried before, like the Aussie Burger, a 6oz Kangaroo burger topped with prawns and a mango and lime mayo. (Yum!) Or if you’re really hungry, try taking on one of the food challenges; The challenge burger: a 6oz Moo Moo Burger on top of a 6oz Messy Mexican chilli beef burger, nacho chicken strippers, mozzarella cheese, home-made chilli, crispy bacon, nacho’s and onion rings. Oh, and a double helping of French and sweet potato fries. Or if you’re not in the mood for a burger, why not take on The Big Dawg, a two tier 8 gourmet hot dog laid head to head with a two tier 8 bacon wrapped chilli dog, all in a foot long baguette and again served with French and sweet potato fries.

Finish either of these challenges by yourself to be entered into the hall of fame and walk away with either an “I Beat the Meat” or an “I Survived the Sausages” T-Shirt. Once you’ve had your fill from the kitchen you’ll probably be feeling pretty thirsty right? Pick up the cocktail menu and choose from the wide selection of taste bud treats to help you dance the night away, from classics such as: Long Island Iced Tea and Mint Julep to Orange Rooms own contemporary twists: The Chesterfield, a rum based drink with lime, passion fruit and kiwi juices, and the Jamaican Milkshake, this powerful mix contains rum, Guinness and a fireball cinnamon whisky. Advertised as putting fire in your heart, rum in your belly and lead in your pencil, this one’s not for the feint hearted! As with any good bar, this one is bringing a brand new student night to Bournemouth, head on down on Tuesdays from 10pm for Wall Street: a drinks stock exchange with price crashes on all three floors, perfect for penny pinching students who want to stretch their student loans but still have fun.

Not just the Tuesday student night, Orange Rooms will be presenting you with some pretty exciting entertainment over the coming months, including: DJ’s, live music, open mic, comedy, burlesque, poetry, improvisation and cabaret nights! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for further details, but while you’re waiting for your favourite form of entertainment to hit, just get yourself to Orange Rooms to eat, drink, groove and lounge.

hands down! The fish is served in a Kilner jar on a black slate which apparently causes quite a reaction from customers and a lot of smart phone photographing. It is as visually pleasing as it is tasty!

The traditional styling of the bar with its low ceilings, oak beams, fireplaces, and candles melting slowly over empty wine bottles adds character and warmth to the place, which the friendly barmaids reinforce making you feel welcome and at home as soon as you step in the door.

If you have a sweet tooth, The Olive Tree doesn’t disappoint there; desserts like their Madagascan vanilla crème brûlée served with shortbread will definitely satisfy it! Or if you’re not too hungry, you could pop in for the very popular coffee and cake, but you better get there early if you want a slice of firm favourite: carrot cake, it tends to sell out quickly.

When Upraw visited The Olive Tree we were presented with an array of beautiful and delicious dishes, like a mozzarella and sun blushed tomato flatbread and a crispy duck salad with a hoi sin and plum dressing, but our favourite was definitely the fish and chips served with minted pea purée and home-made tartare sauce. The Haddock was cooked to perfection and we couldn’t get enough of that pea purée, beats our local chippy

We spoke to Tim Frith who has been head chef here for the past 18 months, who told us how the menu changes throughout the year to work in seasonal ingredients, such as the wild mushrooms picked from the New Forest which are used in the Autumn menu. We also found out that all the meat used in the restaurant comes from a local butcher and the cheese comes from a farm just 10 miles away.

he olive Tree, owned for the past year by Nick Warner, is tucked away on Latimer Street in the small market town of Romsey just eight miles outside of Southampton. This bar and restaurant has a cosy country pub feel and prides itself on serving restaurant standard food.

ot satisfied with just supplying excellent food to their loyal customers, manager Daryl Thomas tells us that The Olive Tree also puts on some pretty great entertainment and events too. Fancy a board game and a pint of local real ale on a Sunday afternoon? Come down and take your pick; there’s

Scrabble, Monopoly, Draughts, Trivial Pursuit and many more to choose from. There’s also live acoustic music every Thursday night between 8pm and 10pm, and look out on their Facebook and Twitter pages for news of future barbecue’s, hog roasts, jazz nights and even cigar evenings in the beer garden.

Talking of beer, the well-stocked bar provides something for everyone, from changeable and local real ales to Champagne and Prosecco, a wide selection of wines, spirits and draft lager, and not to forget the cocktail menu which includes such classics as: Long Island Iced Tea, Bloody Mary and Peach Bellini’s. The Olive Tree provides a comfortable environment that welcomes everyone with its smiling staff and delicious food. I’m sure the many regulars will tell you that it’s worth going back time and time again.

TWENTY O N E PILOTS

ZANE LOWE’S BIG THING THIS WEEK & HOTTEST RECORD IN THE WORLD

Last year Columbus, Ohio duo twenty one pilots signed to prestigious label Fueled By Ramen and have since had a whirlwind 12 months. They’re now ready to hit the UK with their label debut album “Vessel” to be released 2 September preceded by their brand new single ‘Holding On To You’ which was released on 19 August. Following on from two incredible sold out shows at the Barfly in March and The Underworld in June, the band will be returning to the UK to play two headline shows in Birmingham and Manchester as well as their Reading & Leeds Festival debut. This will definitely be one not to miss! Having already self-released two albums, the first in 2009 and second in 2011 the duo quickly attracted serious label attention following a sold out hometown show in Columbus – known for their irrepressible on-stage energy, twenty one pilots have built an avid international following with their crazy live performances. Everywhere

they go they’re building an incredibly loyal following that hang on Tyler’s every word and every move – as shown by their recent Underworld show where 400 kids turned up wearing the same white balaclava that the guys wear on stage. “Vessel” sees twenty one pilots expanding upon the distinctive fusion of piano-driven indie-rocktronica, ably supported in the studio with superstar producer Greg Wells (Weezer, Adele, Aerosmith) behind the board. Songs like “Holding On To You” prompted Billboard to hail the guys “wind-up-toy of a single” as irresistible “saccharine punk rap”. This is a band you need to know about. mokin’ Aces isn’t your average cocktail bar. Everyone who’s visited the establishment knows that, and if you haven’t had a chance yet, well...you’re missing out. Realistically; if you live or work in Bournemouth, you will have heard of this place, you will have visited it, and you will be a fan.

UPRAW ~ 10

But for those noobies joining our sandy shores this September with the beginning of another Academic year, wanting to make sure their entire well-earned loan isn’t spent in some of the better known chain establishments Bournemouth’s nightlife has to offer, UpRaw sat down with proprietor JJ, to find out exactly why Smokin’ Aces is just so damn amazing.

135

So come on then; why are you guys so great? Ha! Umm...well it’s not by accident. We specialise in being unique, we want to be the only place in the area that offers this kind of experience, and we knew that’s what we wanted to do from the outset. We’re a whisky lounge and a cocktail bar. You’ve got over 50 whiskies to choose from and well over 200 spirits in general on offer, so there’s no danger of not being able to find anything that takes your fancy. You’re known for you staff as well; Mixologists with some pretty impressive expertise. Yes, I’m happy to say the guys here know what they’re doing. We have a pretty rigorous training process, so by the time the guys get behind the bar and are serving people, I’m happy that they’re at their best. We don’t have a cocktail menu, if I’m honest it’s too limiting for the knowledge Smokin’ Aces staff have, so instead we like customers to come up to the bar, and say “I really like Tequila” or “make me something with a rhubarb taste”, basically be as random as they want, and we’ll make something for them, we always give the customer what they want. Has being so adventurous ever back-fired?

the look of the venue, our bar playlists, and the comfy red cushion booths, you’re going to struggle to find a venue that better caters for a relaxing drink and some socialising after a day in the office. Come night time, it’s all about the live music, with DJs or bands always playing. We have a monthly calendar so you can keep up to date with what’s going to be going on. The atmosphere definitely picks up a pace and the place gets pretty busy, but we still manage to keep the ambience chilled, cool and relaxed. Everyone I talk to always has a great time when they come here. The first thing they notice and love is of course the look of the place, and all those spirits lining the wall, it makes such a statement. Where did the idea for the venue style and ethos come from? I was approached with an idea for a whisky bar; I think there was a real hunger for some new establishments in Bournemouth that offered something more than cheap, rubbish drinks. I went over to New York on a research trip, and came back with the idea of an Anglicised version of an American dive-bar. So we had the idea, and I had a very small loan from the bank. I didn’t have enough money to refurbish, so I had to be inventive with the look of the venue; lucky for me the exposed brick really worked!

Well, a part of our loyal customer make-up is people who work in the industry, which we love. But it does mean that when they come in, we almost expect them to try and challenge us, perhaps even throw in a few made-up cocktails to try and catch us out. So the guys aren’t afraid to say they haven’t heard of a certain drink. And if it is a real one, just tell us what’s in it and we’ll make it for you anyway.

I knew I wanted to offer a place where there was consistency; customers could come in and know that they were going to be continuously delivered the product they wanted. So it was all about the training, and finding the right staff. We’re almost the same team as when we started out three years ago.

When would you say is the best time of the evening to come here?

There are definitely a few things in the pipelines. I think we’re ready to expand; it just all depends on the location. When we find it, it’ll be full steam ahead with getting the Smokin’ Aces name out there though.

Firstly, our opening times are set in stone; Sunday to Thursday 5pm till 1am, Friday and Saturday till 2am. They’re written on our front door, and they’ve been exactly the same since the day we opened. If you want to come for some after-work drinks, we’ve got a great ambience going on in the early evening. With

UPRAW ~ 10

And what about the future? Got any plans?

We’re also getting ready to celebrate our 1000th consecutive day of being open. Even through Christmas, we haven’t had our doors shut to anyone for even a day, so I’m looking forward to that, got some things planned, so keep an ear open.

FRIGHTENED RABBIT UPRAW ~ 10

2013

has certainly been a phenomenal year for the band. Having released their album Pedestrian Verse to rave reviews and having sold out mammoth UK and US tours, the band has gone from strength to strength, touring the globe and picking up new fans on the way. The band recently headed out on a sold-out Australian tour, and due to such high demands, Frightened Rabbit announced additional dates. Currently on the UK festival circuit, Frightened Rabbit played their biggest show to date in their native Scotland at this year’s T in the Park festival. They also packed the John Peel stage at Glastonbury in June, played Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and the NME/Radio 1 stage at Reading and Leeds festival. Next stop, USA. So, where did the name Frightened Rabbit come from? It was an old nickname given to me by my parents when I was younger. I was very shy and often curled in the corner like a frightened rabbit! Amongst the band is your brother, drummer Grant Hutchison. What’s it like having your brother in a band? It’s quite nice, it keeps me quite grounded and I think I do the same for him. Occasionally we do have arguments well, you know, we’ve been annoying each other since we were born! We don’t argue with anyone else in the band and it’s definitely a nice release…more often than arguing we get on and it’s really good! How would you describe your sound to those who haven’t listened to Frightened Rabbit before?

Well I think we write pop music with a dark twist and it’s not much more complex than that. I don’t think we write experimental music, I think it’s just honest and it’s music that people can associate with and hopefully project their own lives on. So that’s all we try and do and that’s all we’ve ever done, really. What bands do you admire and how so? I admire bands that have a sense of longevity and those that progress in a slow organic manner; bands like The National, Wilco, and artists like Brian Adams and even Biffy Clyro. We admire mainly the bands that have had long careers because they’ve done their own thing and not followed what’s being done already. They’ve just done their own thing and that’s what we’re trying to do as well. Who’s your favourite band to have played alongside? To be honest, they’re not the biggest, but they are my favourite band from Canada called Wintersleep. They’re not only one of my favourite bands but they’re also my favourite people. So when we went on tour with them at the start of the year it was just that it was a pleasure to watch and hang out with them. We also have some similarities musically. This year you’ve played at festivals such as T in the Park and End of The Road – what is your biggest festival to date? What was your first festival? We’ve been to quite a few big ones this year and the biggest would possibly be Glastonbury and Lollapalooza. The first ever festival we performed at was End of The Road in 2007, the first year it was ever on. It’s a brilliant festival and absolutely one of the best in the country!

139

Where do you get inspiration from for song lyrics?

Do you prefer playing on big stages or at smaller venues?

Everywhere – I think you have to be open to anything as far as inspiration goes. You have to just channel it into your songs. I’ve tried to expand my influences and write more about other peoples’ lives as well, but really I get inspiration from absolutely anywhere. You can’t close yourself off; you have to write about anything, really!

There are pros and cons to both really. I love playing to a large audience as you get a real surge of noise and I guess the wave of feeling from that is fantastic. But you lose the intimacy. You can interact with the crowd in small venues and everyone feels a lot more involved in the process. But both the smaller venues and the big are approached quite differently.

Are there any other – perhaps more subtle – themes that run throughout the songs and between albums too?

We’ve listened to your new album ‘Pedestrian Verse’ – the most recent album to be released on the new major label Atlantic. For those who haven’t heard it yet, are there any differences between this and the other albums?

There are a lot about breakups, but mainly it’s just about human interactions and what it’s like to be human. A lot of people don’t relate the songs to breakups but find relations in other things such as depression and having hard points in their lives. I think the good thing about songs is that I can write about whatever I like and that once they’re out people can relate to them in whatever way they feel. Lots of feelings are involved but the lyrics are mainly about human interactions. There have been multiple US tours undertaken by the band, how does it feel so have such a high level of success in countries other than your own? It’s been a real privilege, we’re lucky as it’s not every band are able to do that…especially bands from Scotland, even financially! We’re really lucky we’ve had such a strong audience in The US, Australia, and certain parts of Europe and to be able to keep going there.

Yeah, there are differences – again like I’ve said we’ve progressed organically and taken steps in a slow and natural way. It does sound different. I don’t listen to albums once they’re done, really, so I’m not sure where the differences lie, but Pedestrian Verse was written three years after the one before (The Winter of Mixed Drinks), so it’s naturally going to be different. But with the new album we’ve achieve something we’ve been looking to achieve from the start. Musically, yeah it’s definitely different. We’ve become more adept at what we’re doing and we’ve gained experience - it’s a slow process in becoming better at what you do. To me this album is a lot more refined than the others. Do you have to have a beard to be in the band? You don’t have to; we’re just all lazy enough to have one. We’re just lazy bastards who tend to let them grow! Well we love them! Hope you guys have fun on your tour in America – we look forward to having you back..

We are always well received and have played a number of headline shows at venues including The Sebright Arms in London and Sixty Million Postcards in Bournemouth (which we brought to capacity of 350) with regional shows currently being booked.” The band have had one physical release, a ‘self playing’ 10” EP on Pictogram which was marketed as an art piece and priced at £15. This has sold well internationally and domestically, shifting almost 250 copies to date. To coincide with the upcoming of Cassette Store Day, ‘Tombola’ is set to be an extremely limited edition C30 from The Death of Pop. It was recorded live on the 26th August 2013 using a 4-track cassette recorder and has been mastered straight to cassette with no digital conversion. None of these recordings are available in any other format and will not be released on the bands Soundcloud. The cassette is black, hand numbered and in a high quality risographed cover. We look forward to getting our hands on a copy!

Band Members: Angus James, Oliver James. Thom James, Isaac Jones, George Abram.

WHO BACK 2 HOUSE ARE:

WHAT BACK 2 HOUSE DO:

AJ Events is a dynamic young company with a fresh approach to events in Bournemouth. Specialising in electronic dance music, they are already working with Europe’s top DJs and artists to create one-of-a-kind events and experiences.

Back2House is a monthly electronic dance music event in Halo club by AJ Events. After the huge success of our last 2 parties with Darius Syrossian, Wildkats, Zombie Disco Squad and Burnski

The ethos of AJ Events is simple. Music is an inspirational medium that unites friends, families and groups to experience something very special. Through creativity, innovative ideas and digital marketing, AJ Events always reach new audiences to help bring cutting-edge music to the masses. By coupling the biggest DJs in dance with stunning visuals and beautiful venues, each party has something unique to get people talking. And from management to marketing to their resident DJs, AJ Events collectively have a clear mission - to inspire community spirit, with a growing following throughout the region. Positivity has been key to their success so far and it is an exciting time to get involved.

The main thing that makes Back2House stand out is the fact that it is so visually striking. From the gorgeous dancers to the stunning visual installation from L.E.G – the inventive design makes this gorgeous venue even more striking than usual and forms the perfect backdrop for a night of full-on fun. In September, Friday 13th is lucky for some, with an excellent line-up of inventive DJs. Coyu has had a successful summer at Pacha Ibiza and will be bringing his unique brand of global house to the Halo Bournemouth dancefloor. Think house with a techno twist, coupled with some groovy soul and a truly international flavour. Also headlining is Tim Green, one of London’s most exciting electronic dance music DJs and producers, awarded Best Breakthrough Producer award at DJ Mag’s Best of British awards in 2010.

Back 2 House Production: visuals, well known DJs, dancers, working with students with costume design, digital media, make up artists and film.

e are Foundation, a Bournemouth based collective comprising of numerous artists who contribute and work under one name. Although our identities are not openly divulged we are not trying to be mysterious, we just want the music to take priority. The collective is not a b o u t pushing singular profiles. Our aim is simple: to provide a spotlight on the best up and coming underground music, via mediums such as our bi-weekly mix series, events and eventually a range of related merchandise. All of this either is, or will soon be available from our website and other social media. Foundation was formed from our joint passion for music and events, and with each of us having a different preference on genre, It seemed like a great opportunity to combine them together.

UPRAW ~ 10

A great deal of current events seem to be firmly set on showcasing one style of music, which we feel has become a little predictable. This resultantly urged us to switch things up, offering a more dynamic and exciting alternative. Unlike what is currently on offer we aim to support and promote a wider spectrum of underground music, keeping the content fresh and exciting with a focus on Jungle, Garage, Grime and ‘Bass’. What’s great about pushing such a range of sound is that it offers a means of discovering new and different m u s i c a l territories. Being based in Bournemouth has definitely helped motivate us. The area has a great music scene. There’s a lot going on, and it’s a home to many talented and established artists. Overall its a great source of inspiration. In the up and coming months expect a selection of new and exclusive mixes available through our website. We’ll be kicking off our events from the 3rd October, hosting room two for ‘Loop’ at The Old Firestation.

t’s been a bumper Summer for Bournemouth’s event scene but no-one has quite put their stamp on it like our favourite promotions company... Cocoloco! Having started in late March with their debut out-door event ‘MADHOUSE’, 2013 has seen B o u r n e m o u t h’s most notorious tribe add no less than 3 out-door events and mini festivals to their already busy event brand. It’s hard to reference Summer 2013 without mentioning the Friday night that saw them takeover Sandbank’s Beach and the UK Beach Polo site with ‘On The Beach’. Bringing together an awesome line-up of up and comers as well more established DJs, including the likes of Radio 1’s ‘Monki’ and charting duo ‘Gorgon City’, Sandbank’s found itself being given a shot of much needed youth culture without having to lose any of its prestige. Where do you go after taking over one of the world’s most renowned beaches? Well, if you’re Cocoloco you ‘Chase the Sun’! Putting

UPRAW ~ 10

the cherry on top of a late Summer, Cocoloco will be heading back to the home of so many of the town’s best parties as they take over their own area of Chapel Gate Sports Ground (home of Summerball and 7s)! With over 2,000 attendees, a line-up that includes certified Garage legends DJ EZ and Artful alongside the likes of Hannah Wants, Toyboy & Robin, Shift Key, Monki and Crown Duels, all hosting the 02 Academy sponsored main stage; we can’t wait for what’s set to be one of the biggest out-door event lineups Bournemouth’s ever seen. Adding to their site we are delighted to announce you’ll be able to find us at ‘Chase the Sun’ where we’ll be loading up our very own Upraw photo-booth with all the trademarks of festival season as we take our spot in Richmond Classic’s ‘Trippy Garden’; a fantastic initiative that will see half the ‘Chase the Sun’ site filled with local business’ putting on their very best for the perfect mixture of music loving locals and hedonistic students!

161

Beyond their out-door events, remember you can catch Cocoloco hosting a full line-up of weekly parties ranging from their all new Lost Mondays @ The Lost Garden, the extra lively Varsity Wednesdays @ Bar:[Me] and the unforgettable Thursday night residency at Bonsai Lounge. With so much going on we’d recommend heading their way for the sought of flexible work that will keep you partying through till 2014 with a smile on your face.

Set up by a Bournemouth Uni graduate there’s never any shortage of opportunity for anyone looking to make their mark in marketing and promotions. Having been a permanent fixture in the town’s nightlife for almost a decade, we wait with baited breath to see what else Cocoloco have up their sleeves as they continue to set the tone for our events scene. Watch this space!

t’s been long awaited, but the return of Orange Rooms brings a whole new dynamic to the music scene of Bournemouth. So Orange Rooms has finally hit Bournemouth, we catch up with Ilker Ucan and Ty Temel from Orange Rooms and find out more about what is set to be one of Bournemouth’s most iconic venues. Ilker –who are you? Hi, I’m Ilker, I’ve worked in the local night time economy for over 10 years as a marketing and events programmer, scheduler and coordinator for venues like The Opera House, 2020, V, Halo and The Orange Rooms. I also lived in London for 2 years where I worked as an A&R man for Sony Music. I’ve also worked internationally in Ibiza for 5 years at Privilege (the biggest club in the world) and Space. (The best club in the world) Ty –who are you? I’m Ty, I have originally come from a catering background: Restaurants, Cafes and Takeaways. I’ve been very business orientated all my life and had a number of business ventures myself, ranging from promoting nights at clubs to importing electronics from China. I’m good friends with Gary and Ilker, and for the last 12 months I’ve been looking into getting back into being involved into the night time economy. Gary, Ilker and I have been talking about going into business and the opportunity to become part of Orange Rooms came about, so here I am. Sweet, so tell us, why did Orange Rooms actually leave in the first place? Don’t go pulling no stunts like that again! Ilker -I think it’s best to leave what was in the past in the past –we all know who the good guy is –its similar to the Star Wars story really,

and of course Gary being Luke Skywalker, me as Han Solo, Victoria Sheppard as Princess Leia, and Alex Heyes as Chewbacca. I will leave you to cast who you think Darth Vader was... This time it’s the return of the Jedi and The Orange Rooms won’t be leaving!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Were so stoked your back, what should we look out for now your here? Ty -Where to begin!? This Orange Rooms venture will capture all the original trademarked features of the original Orange Rooms in Southampton and more. The site’s split over three floors with different themes over each floor: A Ski Chalet themed “Off Piste” on the top floor with an Après Ski vibe, the ground floor will be trading as a Bar/ Restaurant, very accessible with bi-folding doors across the whole shop front, opening the whole floor out onto the terrace complete with your usual Orange Rooms features - a very quirky retro chic look. The basement floor “The Bunker” will be more of a club feel with a state of the art LED lighting system and a Funktion One Res 4 sound system it will surely be a statement! All in all there will be more than enough to suit every taste! :) Why do we want to come to your venue over the rest? Ilker -I think it offers something very different to the current market. In my opinion there are too many bars in Bournemouth who are pretending to be clubs. The new Orange Rooms is a hybrid concept of bar, restaurant and club which will cater for people daytime, early evening, and night time, done in an retro chic and rustic way. It will attract the music and fashion lovers, the young professionals who love the festival circuit, and the middle aged who have seen it and done it!

169

What is Orange Rooms in four words?... Apart from, well, Orange... Ty -Eat, Drink, Groove, Lounge! What’s your favourite highlights of the new Orange Rooms? We love the lockers... Ilker: My favourite part would be the basement: “The Bunker” It will bring back the old school basement club vibes. With the LED lighting and Funktion One res 4 sound system it will attract music lovers. Also we have a special hidden booth called the Amber Room. The original Amber Room was a beautifully decorative chamber in St Petersburg, Russia, and was named the 8th wonder of the world, it fits well in Orange Rooms as amber is a derivative of orange.

Zane Lowe, Jag Skills etc. At Orange Rooms I have got Harry Judda on board as a musical curator for the Thursdays and Fridays. There will be a an alternative student night on Thursdays called Finders Keepers which is based around music, and have Paul Woolford, Cera Alba etc booked. On Fridays expect an eclectic mash up of all things soul, funk and hip hop on the ground floor and Harry is doing something special in the basement with some fresh new underground bits. Saturdays will be for everyone but in a chic boutique way on the ground floor and some devastating deep and tec house in the basement. Looking forward to it! So tell us, have you both done ‘The Challenge Burger’ surely that’s like initiation right?

Ty: Yes the lockers are gonna be cool and are also a big favourite of ours! Personally I’m going with the top floor: “Off Piste” with its ski cabin theme. From the windows that show the outside as snowing to the individually themed cubicles of the toilets we have outfitted this floor to the maximum to give you a real feeling like you’re half way down a mountain, in a bar enjoying some Après Ski! This floor will include lockers where you can leave your belongings, or even unfinished bottles, lock them up safe and sound for another party! This floor will definitely be a one off for Bournemouth’s night life and will be like nothing you’ve seen before.

Ty: Haha yes we’ve both completed it although maybe not as quickly as others! To be a part of the Orange team it needs to be conquered; an initiation as you say! We actually both had one on one of our first meetings with Gary in Southampton when planning the return of Orange Rooms to Bournemouth a while ago now, but if I remember rightly we both managed it in around the 1 hour mark, not quite the challenge of 45 minutes although being Turkish, we love to eat slowly and make the most of the food and chat for hours so I’m using that as an excuse for failing the challenge! :) I personally don’t see how anyone can beat it so if anyone is up for the challenge I will personally buy the first 5 champions a bottle of bubbly! :)

Friday Rocks was pretty huge when you guys were last here... should we expect something similar with the likes of Jag Skills, Annie Mac, Calvin Harris and Kissy Sell Out to name a few?

Hahaa we’ll be the first ones to take you up on your offer Ty! So, what part of Orange Rooms will we find you guys hanging out?

Ilker -We won’t be doing the big name DJ thing at Orange Rooms, we have our sister club: Halo for that where you will see the likes of Hot Since 82,

UPRAW ~ 10

Ilker: Basement for me: The Bunker . Ty: Top floor: Off Piste.

Sweet, we’ll be in there with you! Great chatting guys. We’ll see you soon, lastly, tell us which nights we need to get our faces down to? Ty -We’ve got two student sessions at Orange during the week: Tuesdays we’re bringing the Stock Exchange to Bournemouth with our very own Wall Street! Thursdays are going to be a bit more music focused, opening with the likes of Kry Wolf and Cera Alba. Weekends expect the funky cutting edge music, incredible cocktails and good time vibes we’re famous for.

We’ve got big plans for Halo in the run up to Christmas with some huge names coming to visit, keep your eyes peeled for our soon to be released line up - we’ve got everyone from Hot Since ‘82 to Jaguar Skills hosting our brand new Friday nights ‘Project X’ That’s not all you can expect from us; as early as next year we’re looking to expand our current property portfolio with some exciting new projects..
