An FAU student who takes 15 credit hours will end up paying $259.05 in athletics fees for that semester. Over the span of an academic year (two semesters), the cost comes out to more than $500. This is money that students miss out on. With a stadium that averages 14,552 attendees and a football program that has only averaged three wins per year since 2011, the athletics fee has not amended students’ displeasure with the stadium. “I think it’s kind of ridiculous that we’re being charged for something that Each number was pulled from its we’re not using, I don’t think we should be paying for [FAU Stadium] as students respective school’s website. when we’re not the ones who paid to build it,” said FAU junior Richard Corcho. FAU boasts the fifth-highest athletics fee in the state of Florida. Students at the University of West Florida, Florida International University, Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of North Florida pay more. Thanks to the hike in the athletics fees, FAU secured $508,400 in revenue for the 2012 academic year, and those to come. A portion of that $508,400 went to fund the rising costs of scholarships for athletes, summer school, salaries and benefits for the coaching staff, medical insurance, team travel and game officials. Damian Thompson, an FAU student and former accounting major, understands the situation that the school faced in raising the athletics fees. “The school is a business, the school has to come up with a price and if they’re in debt then they have to raise their prices somewhere to offset that,” said Thompson. However, not everyone echoes that sentiment. “I’d rather keep that money in my pocket,” said former FAU student Michael D’Angelo who stopped attending classes this semester because he could no longer pay for them. The football program has had trouble garnering student interest and attendance. In 2014, the attendance per game for football was 14,552, but according to the Palm Beach Post those numbers were greatly inflated — which is allowed by NCAA regulations. The stadium seats 30,000. “We should have built up the football program first and then rewarded their hard work with a stadium,” said FAU junior Monique Harvey. Many (including ESPN) reported the stadium almost being filled to capacity at the Dec. 24 Boca Bowl. To those who attended the game, the numbers appear to be skewed. According to Boca Mag, three minutes into the game the stadium was half full. Since the opening of the stadium on Oct.15, 2011, the FAU team has accumulated a 13-35 record and a 9-11 record at home. In the three years since the increase in the athletics fee, FAU football also had three different coaches. This past year was the first full year under head coach Charlie Partridge. The team went 3-9 for the season and lost four games by a combined margin of eight points. Until the football program can string winning years together, the stadium and athletics fees will continue to be looked at by some as money misused.

SIX second success After his trip to Los Angeles to film a TV pilot, FAU junior Eric Dunn sat down to discuss how he took his typical college experience and began a social media enterprise in just two years.
M
Story by Emily Creighton Photo by Mohammed F. Emran
arch 2013, nearing the end of his sophomore year at Florida Atlantic, Eric Dunn came across a short online clip that immediately piqued his interest. “I didn’t really know what it was, so I asked the person who posted it.” “It” was Vine — essentially the video equivalent to Twitter, where you’re limited to sixsecond clips. “I thought it was cool, so I downloaded the app and I just started making my own videos.” He went on to post his first video from his FAU dorm room on April 1, 2013 and, with a variety of skits, voice-overs, and comedic takes on everyday life, quickly gained popularity. But it wasn’t until he posted a satirical Vine featuring himself running shirtless through what could be considered a “white neighborhood” and laughing about stealing, that the views, or “loops,” really started coming in, according to Dunn. “I was a class clown in every grade. And now I’m glad I was because it worked out for the best,” he said. Currently, with 2.9 million followers on Vine, 204,000 subscribers on YouTube and 124,000 Twitter followers, the FAU business management major has turned a humorous pastime into a budding career in the entertainment industry. Since his first post, Dunn has gotten to travel the nation, collaborate with other online stars and earn his place at the top of social media success. He even has the 49th largest Vine following, ranking closely behind Justin Bieber who falls at No. 47, according to Rankzoo, a website that compares Viners based on followers and loops. “I was never expecting it. I was just making [the videos] for fun and it just blew up,” Dunn said. “I was shocked when I hit 100,000 [followers]. I stayed up all night waiting for my number to hit 100,000 and now I’m at like 3 million — it’s great!”

One Sting Could Kill You, or Save You FAU professor and students are researching how to make a deadly sting from a cone snail into a life saver for cigarette smokers, cancer patients and more. Story by Andrew Fraieli Photos by Max Jackson
A
s a fish looms above an innocent-looking cone snail, a thin string-like probe stretches out from the snail’s mouth towards the fish, looking for a place to stab. The probe rips through the fish’s flesh — injecting the snail’s paralyzing venom — then slowly pulls the fish towards its demise and, without struggle, is eaten alive by the snail. Lunch is served. Cone snails are much more dangerous than the average garden snail, for they have the ability to kill a human with just one sting. Fortunately, there are other cone snails that have less deadly venom and are too intimidated by us to attack. The more easily intimidated cone snails are the topic of research for biochemistry professor Frank Mari and his students, who study the venom of the cone snail and its medicinal purposes. “[These snails] muck around with molecules of nature to help get its next meal,” Mari said. He happens to use it to his advantage in the lab. According to his research, it can eliminate nicotine addictions and even be a “natural chemotherapy” for some types of cancers. Venom may seem like the worst ingredient for medicine, but Mari says the ancient Chinese did it and they weren’t wrong. Mari has been working with the venom of these cone snails for about 15 years. Curing smoking addictions, hindering cancer, and tightening skin for only a few payments of $29.95 are only a few examples of the venom’s potential that Mari sees. When asked what would be the holy grail of his work he said, “Some kind of medicine taken orally and helps a lot of people.” He added that he loves working in the lab. “I come to the lab everyday and we discover something interesting.”

Why Deadly Cone Snails?
Mari explains that the significance of the cone snail’s venom in particular is that it is made of small molecules, making them easier to handle and recreate in the lab. Most importantly, it blocks specific channels in our brains, hindering our brain chemistry. Other kinds of venom are made of large molecules that can cause our immune system to attack a medicine making use of this venom, rendering it useless.
How Flies are Helping to Cure Addiction
Alena Rodriguez, a biomedicine masters student
In Mari’s lab, the effects of the different puzzle pieces of venom are tested on flies because their nicotine receptors are similar to humans. Most of the research is using this receptor. The nicotine receptor is the channel where nicotine affects our brain. Mari explains that one part of the venom, when used on flies, makes them unresponsive to nicotine, meaning if the fly had a smoking addiction, it didn’t anymore.
What Exactly is Happening in Your Head?
When the compound from the venom is put into the fly, it blocks dopamine from being absorbed when nicotine is injected. Dopamine, a chemical in our brain that causes pleasure and the want to repeat an activity, is what makes nicotine addictive and is the reason it is so hard for smokers to quit. Mari explains that this isn’t the goal. Blocking the nicotine receptor would not be ideal because it’s used for other reasons in the body. The goal, he says, is to hinder the response of dopamine to nicotine, effectively making the venom a cure for addiction.
Saving You From Cancer
Frank Mari, professor of biochemistry
The cone snail venom could also be used as a possible treatment for cancer. Mari says that certain types of cancer take advantage of the nicotine receptor and use it to recruit cells for destructive causes. Because the venom can suppress this nicotine receptor, it could be used as a “natural chemotherapy,” Mari said.
“Venom Mining”
Each snail has a different kind of venom and it changes every time their diet does, according to Mari. Since there are more than 750 species of cone snails and more than 6,000 components in each venom, there may be over a million different components making up these variations. Mari explained that he is “doing venom mining” by searching for different types of venoms with different outcomes and that there is a treasure trove of possibilities with it.
Cone Snails Have Already Helped Before
Cone snails were not thought of as having medicinal purposes before research done by biology professor Baldomero Olivera from the University of Utah. According to Mari, people have known that cone snails are capable of killing humans since the 1930s. In the early 1970s, Olivera started researching their medicinal possibilities. He eventually published the first paper on the topic, which led to the creation of an FDA-approved painkiller using cone snail venom. The painkiller is non-addictive and is as powerful as morphine. Unfortunately, it costs thousands of dollars and can only be injected through the spine.
It’s Not Easy Getting These Snails
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance machine used in lab to see the different parts of the venom. P. 18
UPRESSONLINE.COM
Mari and his students travel across the world finding and collecting these snails. They scuba dive deep into the waters or use a submersible craft, mostly concentrating on areas in the Caribbean but according to Mari, some can be found on the beach surface of the west coast of Florida. Many of the cone snail species are deadly. So deadly, in fact, that in Hawaii Five-O’s episode, “Cloth of Gold” the killer used a cone snail as a weapon. Mari avoids these types. The timid snails are the ideal types for Mari’s research because their shyness makes them easier to handle. The undergraduates working with Mari separate the venom into different parts, each being tested for its effect, while the graduates explore the reasons for these effects.
February 3, 2015
Working in the Lab
Mari has a “high appreciation” for the undergraduate and graduate students that assist him. They are a vital part of his research, and there are about a dozen working with him now. More than a hundred have worked with him over the years. Alena Rodriguez, a biomedicine masters student, has been working under Mari for three years. She describes her job to her friends by saying, “I study the venom of cone snails,” and she says the next question is usually, “Snails have venom?” and then, “What’s a cone snail?” Rodriguez explains using the popular children’s television show “Spongebob Squarepants.” Gary is a sea snail like the cone snails, so if you have seen “Spongebob” then you have seen a snail that’s similar.
How to Milk a Venomous Snail
The undergraduates typically extract the venom from the snails, while the graduate students focus on the effects. Here’s how they do it: 1) To get the venom, they trick the snail into thinking it’s hunting lunch by holding a goldfish in front of it.
2) When the snail is almost ready, they remove the goldfish and put a small tube near the stinger and the snail injects its venom.
3) Once they have the venom, they give the fish to the snail as a meal. “We get the venom, it gets the fish. We are all happy,” Mari said.
What Else Can They Do? Cone Snail Fun Facts
- Some species of cone snails weaponize insulin, a blood sugar regulator, by releasing it into the water around a fish, causing its blood sugar to drop and keeping it from escaping. - One strand of cone snail venom was found to affect flies but not humans, Mari says it could likely be used as a pesticide.
- A peculiarity that was found about the cone snails is that it produces oxytocin, the love hormone, and uses it in their venom to kill its prey. - The cone snails are nocturnal and will hibernate if there is no food available.
- Mari says it is hard to judge the lifespan of an animal in the wild but that cone snails may live up to 60 years. One snail in the lab has been there for 15 years.
- The stinger of the snail has a small hypodermic needle at the end that looks like a harpoon and sticks into its prey. The cone snail doesn’t grow them back, but reloads. “They have like a quill [inside of them] where they keep the harpoons” Mari explains. - There is no antivenom if stung by the more deadly snails because the venom is too complicated and changes with every snail.
The background photo is of the view under a microscope of a harpoon from the cone snail taken out of its lunch.

Features Professional dress for WOMEN By Emily Creighton
I
was always, and still am, the girl my friends go to for fashion advice. The fashion industry and the collections that come from it continue to inspire me. I originally came to the UP to write fashion articles and keep my personal lifestyle blog up and running. On top of that, I’ve been through the interview process when going out for internships. I was interviewed for BP Nordstrom’s Fashion Board — a fashion marketing and
advertising internship for Nordstrom’s junior’s department — which I was a part of for two years. I understand that dressing for success is much easier said than done. From hair and makeup to blouses and shoes — it’s a trying process. You just want to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward while keeping calm and looking polished. Take these tips into consideration when planning your ultimate boss lady ensemble:
• The makeup: Remember this is not your senior prom or a night out with the girls. Keep the makeup fresh, light and clean. Also, your nails should be trimmed and clean, if not freshly polished.
• The accessories: Add some personality with small jewelry, but don’t take the focus off of yourself.
• The
blouse: Whites and lighter colors are best and can be complemented perfectly with a blazer. Be sure to steer clear of plunging necklines – that’s not what you want to be selling.
• The hemline: A good rule of thumb is to keep the hem of a skirt or dress no shorter than two inches above the knee. Pantyhose or tights should also be worn when a little leg is being shown.
• The
pants: If a skirt or dress is not for you, go for a nice pair of slacks. Make sure they fit properly and have a nice crease. If you need to splurge a little, this should be the item. I promise you’ll get a lot of wear from them.
• The shoes: Practicality is key and employers will take note. Some jobs or internships require being up on your feet or running around. If you go for a heel or wedge, keep it under three inches and closed-toe.
Now, you should be ready to take on the workforce. Take a deep breath and stand up straight. You’ll be sure to make a great impression on your potential employers. Where to shop near campus Photo by Mohammed F. Emran
Wear your interview look a few times before the big interview. That way you are more comfortable in your look. When you are confident in your look, it shows in your personality.” - Tim Quinn, Celebrity makeup artist and VP of Creative Artistry at Giorgio Armani Beauty

Professional dress for MEN
I
used to never give any thought to what clothes to put on. I was a T-shirt and cargos kind of guy. But when I began graduate school, I realized I needed to start dressing a little more maturely. First impressions are important, and whether you like it or not, appearance has a lot to do with how you are perceived. So, I did what many guys in my position do. I flipped through a couple books, found some online forums, followed some websites and wasted a lot of money in the process. Now
By Ryan Murphy
that I’m nearing the end of grad school, I’ve dressed up for presentations and interviews, and I now have an idea of what men should be wearing in a professional environment. Putting on a suit and tie might not be something you look forward to, but when trying to land a job or internship, it’s important to make the best impression with the employer. Dressing appropriately shows that you’ve put some effort in. Here are some guidelines for nailing the professional dress code of the Career and Technical Fair:
• The
shirt: White or blue long-sleeve dress shirt with minimal patterns. Avoid retina-blasting oranges and visible-from-space fuschias. Your face shouldn’t compete with the shirt for attention.
• The tie: Yeah, you have to wear a tie. Ties that are darker than your shirt color look best. Avoid wearing your Dilbert tie or any other wild patterns. It should also end near the middle of your belt buckle.
• The suit: Like the other pieces, the suit shouldn’t be the center of attention. You’re going to a Career and Technical Fair, not the Annual Player Haters’ Ball. Navy, charcoal and gray are your friend. Black works too if that’s all you have.
emember the rule: sometimes, always, never. For a three button R jacket you sometimes button the top button, always button the middle and never button the bottom. On a two button jacket you only button the top.
• The shoes: Leather dress shoes. Black, brown or burgundy. While it doesn’t have to be exactly the same, your belt should match the color of your shoes.
• Don’t forget: Make sure you shave or maintain your facial hair. And keep your fingernails clean — you’re going to be shaking a lot of potential employers’ hands.
While it’s tempting to put on the tangerine shirt you got from Express or the gilded tie from the Donald Trump Collection, your most striking aspect should be you and your resume.
EVENT: The Career and Technical Fair WHEN: Feb. 10 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. WHERE: FAU Arena, Boca Raton Don’t forget to bring an FAU OWL Card, alumni card or resume to be admitted.
