By Michelle Friswell Photo editor

When I got the chance to create a special issue it was a no brainer on what I wanted the theme to be. Sports. As a photographer, sports have always fascinated me. Being able to capture that one moment that ends up being the highlight of the game — it doesn’t get better than that. And showcasing the 10 best athletes at FAU sounded even better. Even though I had a mini-heart attack when I realized just how much work I’d have, getting shots of all these players was what won me over. After shooting sports like football and baseball and basketball — and tennis and soccer and track — my respect for athletes has grown tremendously. Even with crazy practice schedules, at the end of the day they’re students — just like me. And you. Our goal for these 10 profiles was to show off not just the students we think are the best players, but to show them off in a different way. I wanted something a little more personal than just pictures of them playing in a game, because they’re more than that. So setting up a photoshoot with each of them was our way of seeing them more relaxed, able to joke around like the rest of us. It was a blast to shoot. I hope you feel the same flipping through. Needless to say, it was worth it.

By Rolando Rosa Sports editor

The amount of sports represented in this issue are so varied I couldn’t rank the players from 1-10. You would think picking from a list of athletes at FAU, a school not known for sports, would be a breeze. Just follow the traditional route of the big three of college sports (football, basketball, and baseball). And at first, I was salivating at the thought of filling the list with athletes from my favorite sports. However, as I researched, more and more worthy candidates kept sprouting up from the most unlikely sources. Men’s and women’s tennis, track and field, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, you name it. These aren’t high profile/big budget sports. I’ve never been to a single game for any of them (not just at FAU but in my entire life) and based on the attendance figures, most people don’t either. The Big 3 is well represented in this list (David Hinds, Randell Johnson, Greg Gantt, Mark Nelson, and Corey Keller), but the Little Five are where I came away the most impressed. These athletes don’t get the perks of the big boys on campus. There’s no charter planes and five-star meals for them. Some don’t even have the proper facilities to play their matches on-campus. So, with all due respect to the establishment of big college sports, it’s time for the Little Five to get some love too, at least here at FAU.

TAYLOR

ALBRECHT Senior 6’4”

FAU men’s tennis coach Brandon Stokes calls Taylor Albrecht one of the cockiest players on the team. So, it should come as no surprise why he decided to start playing tennis at the age of 10. “Honestly,” Albrecht says. “I thought it was easy.” The junior college transfer from the University of North Florida made it look exactly that way at FAU in 2012. Albrecht ended the season on a 13-match winning streak and a 23-5 overall record.

FAU women’s tennis player Marlene Ryan (10-2) won so many matches last season, she can’t even recall her favorite one. However, it’s the pair of losses that still linger in her memory. Ryan’s senior season is coming up, and she would love nothing more than to end her college career unblemished. “For my senior year, I’d like to go away undefeated. Thinking back on those two losses last season, the first match that I lost, I just don’t think that I was ready to compete,” Ryan says.

Greg Gantt is one of just eight FAU basketball players to reach 1,000 points for their college career. After leading his team in scoring all three years at FAU, Gantt has proven big-time schools, such as his hometown’s University of Florida, wrong by being able to perform well at the Division I level. “Everything happens for a reason. Coming out of high school, I really wasn’t ready,” Gantt says. “But coach [Mike] Jarvis has prepared me physically and mentally for this level of basketball since I have been on campus.”

CHENISE MILLER Forward Redshirt junior 6’0”

After leading scorer Breana Turner went down with a season ending knee-injury, Chenise Miller (a transfer from Eastern Michigan University) filled the void by leading the Owls, not only in points (10.6) and rebounds (7.4) per game, but also with her work ethic. “After missing the prior year with a redshirt season, I was just really anxious to get on the court again and work hard for my team,” Miller says. “I could not be a hypocrite, so I had to work really hard so I could lead by example.” The defining moment of the season, in Miller’s opinion, came when the Owls were down by 15 in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament to North Texas and stormed all the way back for the win. “That has probably been my favorite memory so far, because we were the first team in school history to get a tournament win in the Sun Belt,” Miller says.

COREY KELLER Outfielder Senior 6’1” 216 pounds

It’s 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth with one out. The conference title is on the line and Corey Keller is down to his last strike with the bases loaded. One pitch later, Keller slaps a single into the outfield and is bum rushed by his teammates. “It felt awesome. I was able to come up in a big situation for my teammates and everybody,” Keller says. “It felt great when everybody did the dogpile, and everybody was hugging me. We were all just excited that we accomplished something as a team.” Keller tied for the team-lead in home runs with seven and is excited about spending time with his new teammate — brother Conlan. “I think it’s going to be fun. I’m going to be hard on him this year, make sure that he does things right, because I’ve been around this program,” Keller says.

MARK NELSON Outfielder/First baseman Senior 6’2” 200 pounds

As a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, Mark Nelson knows all about suffering. It’s part of what makes his college baseball success even sweeter. “It was just a great feeling to know that we’ve done it two of the past three years,” Nelson says of winning the conference title in 2010 and 2012. He tied for the team lead in home runs with seven last year. Nelson says he learned the game from his brother, who now works with a sports marketing program in Atlanta, Ga. The finance major wants to remain in sports even when he’s finished playing baseball. Nelson’s baseball dream however is to get back to Chicago — as a big leaguer. “I’ve been to Wrigley [Field] a few times and the atmosphere there is unreal with the fans in the bleachers and in the stands. It must be great to be a player in that city.”

STATS

Brittney

Nash Forward Junior 5’10”

When FAU forward Brittney Nash isn’t playing soccer, you can usually catch her outside. “Get me outdoors,” the energetic Nash says. “I love wake boarding, water tubing and fishing.” Nash led the team in assists (5) last year, which she calls an honor, but doesn’t hide her favorite thing to do on the soccer field — score goals. “I wish I would have led the team in scoring,” Nash says. “That would have been more awesome.” With a 6-11 record, the team struggled last season. But Nash has already pinpointed ways to improve this year. “We have to pass faster, be more fit and work on our offensive attack,” Nash says. “We need to try to be positive with each other on the field.”

2010: 14 solo tackles, 27 assisted, 1 sack 2011: 60 solo tackles, 32 assisted, 5 sacks

At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, FAU linebacker Randell Johnson is one of the biggest guys on the team. He credits his giant stature to his favorite off-the-field hobby. “Sleep,” Johnson says as he laughs. “That’s why I’m so tall, man. I love sleeping, boy.” When he’s awake, Johnson makes his living harassing quarterbacks. Last season, he led the team in sacks (5) and was second in tackles (92). Johnson says he’s proud of how much he has matured in his time at FAU. “Whew! I’ve improved a lot,” Johnson says of the strides he’s made from freshman year to now. “I came from being a numbnut with my old coach to being one of the leaders on the team.” He’s also a smooth operator with the ladies. Johnson shares his typical playlist for a romantic night. “Some Monica. Some Donell Jones. You know, set the mood right,” Johnson says with a grin. “Just some nice stuff like that.”

STATS

2009: 13 solo tackles, 11 assisted, 1 sack 2010: 11 solo tackles, 13 assisted 2011: 57 solo tackles, 53 assisted, 2 sacks

What’s the easiest way to be the most popular player on the football team? Be the first to get a copy of NCAA Football 2013. As a way to build unity, senior linebacker David Hinds invited his teammates over to play the game in the summer. “I was the first one to get it, and they all came over to my off-campus apartment, just to see what we were rated, how they made us dress. It was just funny, man,” Hinds says. “We played one game and was just excited, like if one of us made an interception or tackle.” The real-life Hinds put up video game numbers in 2011, leading the team in tackles (110). He believes his study habits are what helped him become a better player. “Just the studying, the off-the-field work. Putting in the preparation,” Hinds says. “Just learning to get my team ready as a leader [now]. Make sure they’re doing what I’m doing and don’t lead them down the wrong direction.”

DANIELLE AROMASHODU Sprints/Hurdles Sophomore 5’9”

FAU sophomore hurdler Danielle Aromashodu finishes races seemingly faster than most people can pronounce her last name. Just last season, she was the Sun Belt Conference champion in the 400-meter hurdles for the second year in a row. Her time of 59.15 seconds also broke the FAU record. “I was excited and I felt accomplished because I know it’s not often that people are double time champions,” Aromashodu says. “I felt like the work I put in for the season finally paid off, and I’m back on top of the podium.” Aromashodu’s tall, chiseled 5-foot-9 frame is a testament to her track training, but genetics might play a role in it too. Her brother Devin (6’2”), currently in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, is her role model. Aromashodu says he was the person who inspired her to start running track at the age of 9. “My brother just one day came and told my mom, like ‘Hey, Danielle should go run track,’” Andromashodu says. “So, I just went out and started.”
