A home aquaponics system is great for anybody who is interested in growing more vegetables in the same space or for anyone who wants to kick the un-trustworthy grocery store to the curb and grow their own organic produce. An aquaponics system consists of two parts. There is the tank where you grow your fish and there is a bed (usually on top) where the plants go. Water is pumped up from the fish tank (the fish produce waste that contains the nutrients your plants crave) and as this water passes by the roots of your plants they absorb them which is like filtering the water. This clean water is then sent back to the fish tank where the process starts over again. What are the benefits from building a home aquaponics system? There are two main benefits that people (especially me) really enjoy. The first benefit is that with an aquaponics system you can grow 10x the amount of plants as you would be able to grow in an ordinary soil garden. This means that a very small area can produce a huge amount of produce. The second benefit that is my personal favorite is the fact that all the produce you grow with aquaponics is organic. You know exactly what's been done to get these tomatoes and it didn't involve shady farming practices. If what you're learning has got you itching to start building your own aquaponics system than you're in luck. I'm going to explain exactly what you need to get started. The first thing I recommend you do is go find a guide. I know it sounds boring, but a guide is going to show you exactly in detail what you need to do to build your aquaponics system. It will also teach you what types of fish and plants you can grow with an aquaponics system. There are also some tricks like making sure to check local laws to check whether or not there are restrictions on the types of fish you can grow. You'll also learn how to grow different things (like strawberries!). The best part is that setup doesn't cost an arm and a leg (which is where food prices are going) and you can be up and running within an afternoon this weekend. Once you're setup it's about 30 days before you can harvest lettuce (it's best to start with something that's easy to grow), but once you taste how wonderful it tastes I can guarantee you'll never buy supermarket produce again.
