The Inspiration for Upscale Paws
He was a pudgy ball of brown and white fur, and my justabout-2-year-old instantly fell in love with the curious puppy who waddled behind her at my dad's this-and-that shop in small town Mississippi. My dad's security dog had a litter of puppies, but none of them took a liking to my baby girl like this one did. Both could barely walk. The puppy — part this, part that — woofed, too young to bark. My daughter giggled hysterically, too happy to talk. "What ya gonna name him?" my dad managed to say in between his hoarse laughs. "A Bones," my daughter immediately answered. (We later shortened his name to Bone.) "Can I have him, please, Mama, please?" Her wide eyes teared up. There wasn't much chance in the world that either of us could bear to part with that cute canine. My daughter, Angel, is 1 5. Bone, a centenarian in dog years, had a battle with cancer this year, could barely walk and was often in pain. We had to end his suffering. We let go of his body, but our cherished memories of him endure. In the picture above is another puppy my daughter brought home from Paw Paw's house. Bella has her own special place in our hearts. Upscale Paws is a lifestyle magazine launched in memory of Bone and as a testament to the bond shared between people and the pets they love. Please subscribe to the electronic magazine by emailing upscalepaws@gmail.com or support us as an advertiser. Enjoy.

eith Evans and his family own Alabama's only Petland. It draws a steady stream of those hoping to fall in love with a pet. The location near the open air EastChase mall in Montgomery sees heavy traffic during football season when the Auburn and Alabama fans make certain their pets are sporting the right apparel to show love for their owners' favorite team. One of Evans' fondest memories is when University of Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback "AJ" McCarron Jr. stopped by to purchase his puppy a No. 1 0 jersey.
6 Fall 201 3 | Upscalepaws@gmail.com
Ready "Our Alabama and Auburn jerseys are very popular, as you can imagine," Evans said. Collars and leashes are hot sellers, too, he said. Jerseys cost in the neighborhood of $21 to $25 each and collars and leashes begin at around $6. There are even cheerleader uniforms and sweatshirt hoodies on the heavily stocked team spirit racks. Evans, the Petland's general manager and vice president, said the store receives shipments of Alabama and Auburn gear once or twice per month. Shoppers may want to hurry in since sales of the merchandise tend to peak when it's time for the big game. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers match up Nov. 30 at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. Kick-off time is yet to be set. No matter if you're a college football enthusiast who loves to chant Roll Tide or War Eagle, don't forget to schedule a little gridiron fun for the four-legged fans. In addition to team attire, give your pet a special game day treat to eat. There are cookies at Petland or check out the Homemade Meatballs for Cats recipe at catlovingcare.com or the K-9 Ingredient Meatballs at rachaelray.com. Make sure the vet approves of the ingredients for your pet.

Pamper those precious paws Your dog’s feet sure are made for walking, but did you know they are also made for protecting? Pads provide extra cushioning to help protect bones and joints from shock, provide insulation against extreme weather, aid walking on rough ground and help protect tissue deep within the paw. With all that work to do, it’s no wonder your pooch’s paws often take a bit of a beating. Keep a spring in your pet’s step with our top 10 paw care tips:
Pamper with Pedicures: Your dog's nails should just about touch the ground when she walks. If her nails are clicking or getting snagged on the floor, it's time for a pedicure. Ask your veterinarian or a groomer for advice about what types of nail trimmers are best for your dog and how to use them properly. Snip and Trim: Trim paw hair regularly to avoid painful matting. Simply comb hair out, especially from between the toes, and trim even with the pads. Clean in Between: Foreign objects can become lodged in your dog’s pads. Check regularly between toes for foxtails, pebbles, small bits of broken glass and other debris. These pesky items can usually be removed with a pair of tweezers. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize: A dog’s pads can become cracked and dry. Ask your veterinarian for a good pad moisturizer and use as directed. Avoid human hand moisturizer, as this can soften the pads and lead to injury. Deep Paw Massage: Similar to giving a human hand massage, a paw massage will relax your dog and promote better circulation. Start by rubbing between the pads on the bottom of the paw, and then rub between each toe. Your dog will be forever grateful for the extra TLC! Slow and Steady: If you’re about to begin a new exercise program with your dog, start off slow. Paws may become sensitive, chaffed or cracked, particularly when starting your dog out on hikes and runs. 8 Fall 201 3 | Upscalepaws@gmail.com
Apply First Aid: It's not unusual for dogs to suffer cuts or other wounds from accidentally stepping on glass, debris or other objects. Wounds that are smaller than a half inch in diameter can be cleaned with an antibacterial wash and wrapped with a light bandage. For deeper paw cuts, see the vet for treatment. Summertime Sores: Imagine stepping barefoot onto hot pavement. Ouch! It is important to remember your dog’s paws feel heat extremes, too. To prevent burns and blisters, avoid walking your dog on hot pavement or sand. Signs include blisters, loose flaps of skin and red, ulcerated patches. For minor burns, apply antibacterial wash and cover the paw with a loose bandage. For serious burns, visit your vet immediately. Wintertime Blues: Winter is hard on everyone’s skin, even your dog’s! Bitter cold can cause chapping and cracking. Rock salt and chemical ice melters can cause sores, infection and blistering. Toxic chemicals can also be ingested by your dog when he licks his paws. After outdoor walks, wash your dog’s paws in warm water to rinse away salt and chemicals. You may wish to apply Vaseline, a great salt barrier, to the foot pads before each walk—or make sure your dog wears doggie booties. Practice Prevention: To reduce the risk of injury, keep your home and yard clear of pointy bits and pieces. Be conscious to avoid hazards such as broken glass and other debris when walking your dog. And keep this simple tip in mind—if you wouldn’t like to walk on it barefoot, neither will your dog!. Reprinted with permission. Copyright © 201 3. Is my pet depressed? Humans aren't the only ones who feel blue. Your pets do, too. The only problem is, they can't come right out and tell you they are not quite themselves because of depression. Be observant. It's important to look for signs of depression. Is your pet: • Behaving awkwardly, has stopped self-grooming or expressing a change in personality? • Not using the litter box? • Sleeping a lot more than normal? • Lethargic or far less active than usual?
WHAT'S YOUR POINT?
Veterinarians interested in writing for VETpoint should send up to 500 words, along with a headshot, to upscalepaws@gmail.com.
• Whining, making excessive noise or unusually quiet? • Isolating himself or avoiding contact with people and/or other pets? • Extra clingy or anxious when separated from you or someone/something else? • Not interested in eating or losing weight? If you've answered yes to three or more of these questions, read more about cat depression at www.catchannel.com/cat-depression.aspx and dog depression at dogtime.com/depression.html. Both websites offer suggestions for perking up your pets. Seek official advice from the veteranarian.

Leash Your Style
h Ç@
Leashes are "the accessory" for making a fashion statement that links your personality with that of your pooch. Don't use a leash that clashes with your outfit. Go shopping at Freepeople.com's Pet Boutique (http://www.free people.com/pet-boutique/) and check out a variety of awesome options. The Natural Rope Leash (shown at left) comes in two sizes, medium at $64 and extra large at $68. This leash is adorned with brass metal hardware, a cute metal tab with "FOUND" etched into it and a metal clasp to attach to your dog's collar. It's a production of Found My Animal, a Brooklyn, NYbased brand that raises awareness about rescue animals. The washable leash is about 64 inches long.

The Tulip Field Leash (above) is manufactured by Finnegan's Standard Goods. Buy it at Freepeople.com. This cool leash is made of cotton and stretches 61 .5 inches in length. The graphic printed canvas dog leash features brass metal clasp attachments for that touch of class, but the colorful tulip field imagery makes it the perfect accessory for that dog walker with a vibrant personality. The cost is $48. The casual and natureloving pet owner will go gahgah over Freepeople.com's Grey Paw Arrowhead Leash (right). The dog leash has brass metal clasps, but it also features 1 00 percent cotton webbing and an eyecatching royal blue and white design. It only costs $30 and is 57 inches long.
