THE UP SIGMA RHO X REX BOOK STORE BOOK GRANT MECHANICS 1. Who May Participate The REX Book Store - UP Sigma Rho Book Grant is open to any bona fide student currently enrolled or registered in the University of the Philippines College of Law for the second semester of school year 2020-2021. 2. Duration of the Initiative The initiative will be conducted from January 18 to February 8 of 2021. All announcements shall be posted on the Sigma Rho Facebook page;www.facebook.com/officialupsigmarho. The following are the important dates of the initiative: January 18

3. Entry Mechanics a. An eligible participant may submit an essay with at least 600 words but not more than 700 during the submission period aforementioned. Entries should be in English. b. The topic of the essay shall be: “Share your most remarkable story involving REX Book Store. How has this experience helped you, is helping you, or has been helping you in achieving your dream of becoming a lawyer and a joyful person ready to contribute to an ever-changing society?” c. The file name shall be: “BLOCK&YR.LASTNAME” eg. “B2024.DELACRUZ”. d. Participants shall not input their names nor any allusion to his or her identity in the text of the document itself to facilitate the “blind grading” of the judges. The organizers will rename the files with reference numbers, which will be sent to the participants, before submitting them for evaluation. e. 4. Evaluation Process a. Upon submissions, the entries shall be sent to the judges for evaluation. The judges will be composed of two (2) representatives from Rex Bookstore and two (2) representatives from Sigma Rho. b. The entries will be judged according to the following criteria: i. Content – 50 % ■ Relevance to the topic, Substance, Originality ● Relevance to the topic – Significance of the ideas in the essay to the topic selected by the organizers. ● Substance - The participant must demonstrate his/her grasp and understanding of the subject matter as well as provide a critical view of the topic. ● Originality - Uniqueness, novelty and authenticity of the ideas presented by the participant. ii. Organization – 30% ■ Clarity, Creativity, Unity and Consistency ● Clarity - Use of simple and appropriate words to convey ideas or issues. ● Creativity - The use of appropriate and novel devices and expressions in the exposition of the subject. ● Unity and Consistency - Ability to highlight the main idea of the topic being discussed. iii. Mechanics – 20% ■ Punctuation, Spelling, and Grammar ● The correct use of punctuation, spelling, and grammar. c. The entries will be submitted to the judges anonymously with only reference numbers to differentiate one from the other. The purpose of which is to ensure that the evaluation process will be done blindly and impartially. d. The top five (5) entries who get the highest scores shall be declared as the winners of the initiative. 5. Redemption Process a. Winning participants will be announced in the Sigma Rho Facebook Page. Organizers will also directly contact the winners through their registered contact details. b. Winning participants will be entitled to P5,000 worth of law books from REX Book Store. c. Winning participants will be required to submit a photograph of their choosing for publication purposes. d. Contact details of the winning participants will be provided to REX Cubao Branch. e. Winning participants must provide two (2) valid IDs when claiming their prize. f. Winning participants must be able to claim their prizes in the said branch between February 12 to April 12 2021.

The grant will be subject to stock availability of the said branch. The grant is not convertible to cash nor is it transferable to another person. Ordering of multiple books of the same author and title is not allowed. Winning participants may only claim their prizes once. Any resulting difference or amount left from the grant is not convertible to cash nor transferable to anyone. Upon claiming the prizes by the winning participants, they concurrently give their consent to have their photographs taken with their books.
6. Other Rules and Regulations a. The following are grounds for disqualification: i. Submission of essays beyond the deadline – 11:59 pm, January 31, 2021 ii. Failure to meet the 600-to-700-word threshold. Word counts based on a word processor are acceptable. iii. Any fraud or misrepresentation with regards to the enrollment or registration in the Juris Doctor program of the University of the Philippine College of Law. iv. Commission of any acts of intellectual dishonesty such as plagiarism. The organizers reserve the right to use any program, software, or processor to determine if any part or section of the documents submitted by the participants is plagiarized. v. Non-compliance with the prescribed format for the essay and document file. b. The essay must comply with the following format: Font Style

c. No bindings or special covers are needed. Graphics are not permitted. d. The title of the essay will be excluded from the word count. e. An original copy of the essay must be submitted. Submission of poor quality copies is strictly prohibited. f. References shall be included as footnotes. Block quotations should not be contained in the body of the paper and instead be part of the footnotes, which are excluded from the word count. g. The decision of the judges is final. All participants are deemed to have accepted all the rules and regulations of the contest.

h. Details showing the name of the writer, his or her contact number, email and mailing addresses shall only be used for purposes of the initiative. i. All the entries shall be considered property of the initiative and may be used by the organization for publications relating to the initiative.
