High-Tech Turtle Style! Interesting stuff! Behind the scenes !

• To create the most realistic version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ever, the filmmakers used CGI (computer generated imagery), like that used in the Transformers movie. • The filmmakers mounted shrunken hi-def cameras on a helmet in front of each actor. The cameras could capture the tiniest facial and eye movements, down to the half-blink of an eye or flick of a tongue, so they could be translated into thousands of terabytes of coded information for the animators to play with. • The cast wore brand new ‘mo-cap’ suits that were easier for them to move around in than previous suits. • Months before filming, the actors underwent complex facial and full-body scans that led to the tailoring of their custom-made helmets and mo-cap suits. • On set, the four Turtle actors went through a daily two-hour long session of applying white facial powder and VFX dots to help further track their expressions. Before the cameras rolled, the four turtle actors would then strap on not only their helmets but also a lightweight turtle shell, which added to the realistic physical motion and weight distribution.

LIVING IT UP! The Turtles live underground in a maze-like subterranean world, which the set designers and artists needed to create for the movie. The main set is the Turtles’ hidden underground lair – both home and command centre. The design team created a spectacular 3,000 square foot set – nearly half the size of a rugby field! The set has graffiti-tagged chambers, pizza-box furniture, skateboard ramp, meditation room, a wall of boom boxes, and a console where Donatello monitors the city. “If you had four teenagers living in a sewer, this is what it would look like,” says one of the designers. “…It’s like a private bunker. If the world exploded you could live down there as long as you like – and there’d be plenty of pizza!”

Sea turtles have special glands, which help remove salt from the water they drink.

Hi Upstart, Why is healthy food so much more expensive than junk food? I think that healthy food shouldn’t be too expensive if we want people to be healthy. It is unfair to make it so expensive. I think it’s bad because it means people buy junk food instead. It’s not fair for the people who don’t have much money. How come soft drinks are often cheaper than water? Junk food can mess up your brain if you eat too much of it. That’s why you should only eat junk food as a special treat. Vegetables are very good for you because they have a lot of nutrients. If you don’t eat enough vegetables then you might get sick. I think if healthy food was cheaper then many people would be a lot happier because they would be eating good food – EMMA SHOTTER, 9, St John Bosco School, New Plymouth

My musical recital Nervous, nervous, nervous. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! My heart was thumping. It felt like a bomb next to me, exploding every time I breathed. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!. I was going to the cello competitions. I had entered the Family Fun item, which included my two sisters who each play the violin, my dad on cello and mum on piano. I also entered a solo, which means I play by myself except for the accompanist who plays the piano. For the school, I was playing the Chamber Ensemble

as violinist and pianist. I also entered a fiddle, which was the American style fiddle. When we got to St Peter’s where the competition was held, we went inside and got a room to practise. After we practised, we went to do my solo. I was against another boy. He played before me and was pretty good. Then it was me. I walked across the stage and bowed. Dinosaur design Hi Upstart, My name is Andrew Wooler and I am 10 years old. I am sending these photos of my dinosaur mural I created. It took me about three months to do. I did each dinosaur separately first. I had to draw the dinosaur, then I had to paint each one. After all the dinosaurs were finished, I did the background, adding in the trees and mountains and rocks. I really enjoyed doing this, especially when it was finished – ANDREW WOOLER, 10, Riverhead School, Auckland

The Day I Faced My Fear

N ILLUSTRATION: GRANT BROW

Hi Upstart, I was riding my bike when… CRASH! KABANG! SMASH! I fell off my bike! I was in more pain than I had ever experienced in my life! I felt the pain fly through my sore blood busted arm. I screamed, “Help!” My mum and dad, my three sisters and my brother came zooming out of the house as fast as a giraffe riding a lion. Mum grabbed an ice pack but nothing happened, so everyone hopped in the glossy blue car to go to the hospital. We were in such a rush that we ran over my sister’s chicken! Then SPLAT! Blood came bursting out of the chicken. It was dead. It took longer to get to the hospital because my dad had to clean up the mess. When we got to the hospital, they gave me an x-ray. They said my arm was broken so they put on a cast. After three weeks I got a purple cast, and then two weeks after that, it was all better – COREY-JAMES DAVIDSON, 10, Otonga Primary School, Rotorua

Hands off!

Our ‘awesome’ market!

Hi Upstart, I think robbery is unfair. Kids should be free to enjoy their toys without fear of them being stolen. Robbers always think they will turn out awesome – but they are wrong! Robbery is bad. They always get in trouble and can go to prison. It should STOP! – KATRIN VISSER, 8, St John Bosco School,

Hi Upstart, My name is Christina and I am 10 years old. I love playing netball, doing karate and dancing. My favourite colour is blue and my worst nightmare is wearing all pink! I absolutely love your mag - it’s soooo awesome! – CHRISTINA NIELSEN, 10, Gladstone

Hi Upstart, My school, Ilam Primary, had an amazing market day recently. It was the Year 5 and Year 6 students who were selling stuff. There were so many crazy things! Stalls were selling things like ginger beer, duck bread, and even slime. My crew was called the The Awesome Crew stall, and involved my friends Eleanor, Sophie, and Amber. We sold popcorn, sherbert and lemonade. It must have tasted great because we made $124.60, which was the most out of any stall in our class! And the good thing is that all the money goes to Ronald McDonald House! – REBECCA HANCOCK, 9, Ilam Primary

Hiya Upstart !

Thanks Upstart ! Thank you so much for my cool prize of family passes to Butterfly Creek and Dinosaur Kingdom. We had so much fun! I took my brother, Jake and sister, Felicity. The best part was being able to put my fingers in the dinosaur’s mouth! I loved seeing the butterflies too and one landed on my head – RILEY WRIGHT, 8, Milford Primary School, Auckland Why did the man run around his bed? To catch up on his sleep.
