January 19: Outdoor Mushroom Production, 6:30 pm.

Presentation will include how shiitake mushrooms grow, selection and sustainable harvesting of suitable logs for inoculation, inoculation techniques and timing, fruiting mushroom logs, operation scale and economics. Discussion will also include other types of mushrooms that can be easily grown outdoors and resources for mushroom growers. $10.

Winter Care for Houseplants: Carolyn Van Ness will discuss plants that do well indoors in winter, where and how to care for them, trouble-shooting, repotting and what to do with holiday plants that are starting to look a bit tired. Winter is for the Birds: Learn how to attract birds with birdbaths, feeders, houses and more in this lecture/demo with Liz Magnanti. Participants are encouraged

to bring seeds and houseplant cuttings to swap.

Preregistration preferred. $15. RCGC February 7: Garden Talk – Photo Garden Tour of the Hillwood Estate, 12:15 – 12:45 pm. Experience Hillwood gardens in Washington, DC through pictures. Bring your lunch. Free. CCE/GC February 15 – March 22: Sumi-e, or the Art of Japanese Brush Painting, 6 Wednesdays, 1 – 3 pm. Dennis Burns will introduce students to the use of Oriental tools and approaches, including control of the brush, use of the ink and simplicity as a form of beauty. Skills will be learned and incorporated with repetition and gradual progress. Entry-level course for those who have never experienced Japanese-style brush and ink painting as well as for those who would like an opportunity to continue the art form. $80 members; $95 non-members. Registration required. RCGC February 16: Botany for Gardeners – The Green Plant, 6 – 9 pm. Join Carol Southby, botanist and naturalist, to explore the hidden workings of flowering plants from a gardener’s point of view. Designed for students new to botany as well as those desiring a refresher course. Topics include the structure and function of stems, leaves and roots; photosynthesis and growth; and plant adaptations to different conditions. A component of the Rochester Civic Gardener’s Certificate (see below), class may be taken separately if space allows. $40 members; $50 non-members. Registration required. RCGC February 16 – April 22: Rochester Civic Gardener’s Certificate Program. Basic training for gardeners of all experience levels. Gently used and vintage gardening books, free seed catalogs and back issues of magazines. Open to the public. RCGC February 21: Propagating Woody Plants, 6 – 9 pm. Ted Hildebrant will describe and demonstrate commonly used methods for making more trees and shrubs including cuttings, grafting, budding, layering and seed propagation. Includes handouts for all methods and information on supply sources. $35 members; $45 non-members. Registration required. RCGC February 21 – May 9: Plant Propagation Certificate.

This four-part program is designed for gardeners interested in an in-depth look at how to propagate their own plants, from houseplants, vegetables and annuals to landscape perennials, shrubs and trees, using any and all common methods. Propagating Woody Plants; Starting from Seed; Herbaceous and Softwood Cuttings; Dividing Perennials. Classes may be taken individually if space allows. $88 members; $120 non-members. Registration required. RCGC February 22: Introduction to Organic Horticulture and Its Impact on Your Property, 6:30 – 8 pm. Rick Stecher will discuss utilizing organic practices and procedures to prepare yards and gardens for the growing season. Four sessions: Introduction to Organic Horticulture and Its Impact on Your Property; An Organic Approach to Late Winter/Early Spring Garden Maintenance; Organic Lawn Care; Organic Pruning Techniques – with Consideration for the Plant’s Energy Dynamics.

RCGC February 23: Botany for Gardeners – Flowers, Fruits & Seeds, 6 – 9 pm. Sue Lang and Joe Gallea will guide participants in creating an indoor garden to enjoy for years to come, adding to and changing the landscape over time. Includes a pot, soil, 2 plants and 1 fairy garden accessory. Children may attend for free accompanying a registered adult. Class takes place at Gallea’s, 2832 Clover Street, Pittsford. $35.

Instructor Jim Engel will explain the importance of invasives, how to identify them, how they threaten native plants, populations of song birds, butterflies and all types of wildlife and various strategies for efficient and effective control. $18 members; $25 non-members.

Rebuilding Nature’s Relationships at Home: Doug Tallamy will explain how yards and gardens are essential parts of the ecosystem and what can be done to create living natural communities. Heavenly Plants for Hellstrips: Kerry Ann Mendez will discuss landscaping challenging sites, highlighting plants that thrive in dry shade, hot or sandy locations, wet areas and are not preferred by deer. Gardening with What We’ve Got: Christine Froehlich will share before and after images highlighting ways to evaluate an existing landscape and how to correct common problems.

Nature Play for All: Rachel Edwards will highlight some of Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care’s recent designs for back yards, parks, education institutions, museums and daycare facilities created to connect adults and children to nature. $48 members; $58 non-members.

Cindy Cali will discuss how to properly plant perennials, the upkeep needed for a garden that continues to be pleasing to the eye throughout the seasons and putting the right perennial in the right place. She will explain how to interpret the signs that plants give if something is wrong and how to know if appropriate pruning will create a second flush of bloom. $30 members; $40 non-members.
