Resolutions Do you have your list of resolutions in view? Like in a place that prompts you and keeps you on track? We all have them, but we want to talk about your garden-related ones. Did you make any? We did!! This year we’ve gotten hooked on the word ‘tone.’ We decided we needed to make sure the garden communicates a tone, and maybe several depending on the vantage point. We want it to convey our intent, our feelings, and leave a specific reaction. It’s a bit deeper dig into design thoughts on garden planning and likely not considered as you toil through your daily yard chores; it’s a good winter game to inspire the new season on the doorstep.

Many visit our garden at the nursery, and the buzz words we hear back are very useful and eye-opening. We made a list of the adjectives. Some we loved, others we wanted to nudge in a new direction, and others made us aware of things to change. We honed in on the areas and spaces that inspired the reactions, and then, “TaDa!” ... we had a jumping-off point on the changes we want to make! The goal is to create the “tone” that aligns the feedback words with the impressions we desire to convey.

Make a list of adjectives of what your garden says to you! It will tell you many things about your thoughts, ideas, emotions, and what drives the “why” of making your garden. In this new year of 2021, the desire for an improved tone is all around us; we all feel it. This little exercise may help release the energy from what you cannot change into the things you can. A simple variation in tone can have an impact, create a difference, and deliver change.

From the publisher Welcome to 2021! Since we all had so much more time than usual last year to think about gardening, plan our gardens, and actually garden, all of our landscapes are picture perfect, right? Well, maybe not quite. But my tool shed is more organized than it ever has been (see picture—shelves!).

Lots of people, many of them in their 20s and 30s, took up gardening for the first time in 2020, and when I read some of the questions in online gardening groups I can’t help but cringe. Yes, December is too early to start tomato seeds. Yes, yellowing leaves from the bottom up are a bad sign. No, houseplants aren’t likely to kill your cat (fight me on it!).

Seriously, though—we have an opportunity now to engage a whole new generation of gardeners. Give your new-to-gardening friends seeds, cuttings, and divisions of passalong plants (but not snow-on-the-mountain, please). Applaud their efforts. And do answer their questions, if you can. But most of all, if you’re lucky enough to have new mentees, let them know that gardening is all about trial and error, not giving up when you’ve killed something, and growing what makes you happy.

So get active this winter and join us for sledding on the great meadow hill, snowshoe walks, track hunts, bird feeder crafts, survival games, and so much more! $90. GCVM/NC February 20: Kiddie Cabbage Walk, 10am-4pm. This KIDDIE Cabbage Walk is an alcohol free version of a GCV&M favorite that is fun for the whole family.

Based on a German tradition, a Kohlfahrt or Cabbage walk is an opportunity to gather together with friends and family in the mid winter for a walk in the woods!

Participants will compete against each other while playing games, hiking the trails, warming up by the campfire and more! $55 for up to 6 participants.
