SARA’S GARDEN
Bandwagons After 35 + years in the gardening business, we know that each year brings a new parade of bandwagons; a thoughtful stroll through our display gardens will reveal a series of these that we’ve jumped on and off of over the years. Trying and testing new trends is something we love doing with the goal to make gardening a rewarding and winning proposition for you. Many of these have become a loved and essential part of gardening and our business, some not so much. For 2016, we have already started jumping and thought we would give you some early notice to a couple you should absolutely consider jumping on too! Raymond Evison: A great love affair has been had with Clematis for many years. Indeed, the Queen of the Climbers is the ultimate vertical accent and most gardeners have tried them at least once or twice. Now comes Raymond Evison, who has been breeding these for over 50 years; the quest for the best and with great success, 26 Chelsea Gold medals. Just to show you how rigorous the plant selection business is, they will do about 2,500 crosses a year. That would generate 35,000-40,000 seeds, which would generate about 10,000 seedlings. After a four to five year evaluation and selection process, only five or six of those seedlings make it to market. It takes about 10 years from the time of pollination to actually putting a new clematis on the market. All with improved growth habits, easy care, no fuss pruning and flowers that never quit. This season we will be offering over 20 varieties of these amazing plants including the ones requested in our display gardens. Grafted Vegetables: You’ve heard of these but have you tried them? Vegetable grafting is a centuries old technique utilized in Asia to improve plant production, reduce disease susceptibility, and increase soil utilization. Vegetable grafting was introduced in the United States almost 20 years ago. Finally it has trickled down to the home vegetable garden were its attributes and potential can be utilized by you. The most fun new grafted option is the tomato and potato graft aptly named Ketchup & Fries! We will have several varieties of tomato and peppers in grafted versions this year. This may be the season to run a test of your own. As a reminder, we will be tilling our community garden as soon as weather permits and the 2016 follies will take place this autumn. Both of these have limits on participation. For details & reservations for the Stone Wall Follies, Community Garden, Garden Events or any other garden related topic, email kkepler@rochester.rr.com or call 585-637-4745, ask for Kathy!
35+ Year Mission! It is our greatest desire to provide our customers with top quality, well-grown plant material at a fair and honest price. We will strive to provide an unmatched selection of old favorites and underused, hard-to-find items, along with the newest varieties on the market. We will eagerly share our horticultural knowledge gained from years of education and experience. Lastly, we offer all this in a spirit of fun and lightheartedness.
