Art & Culture

Immerse yourself in art at the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery (the area’s “mini Met”) then visit some of the many other galleries around the region. When you’re ready take a seat, experience the magic of dance at a Rochester City Ballet

performance or at a Garth Fagan—of Lion King fame—show. From top-notch musicals presented by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League or Geva Theatre to small and intimate shows at other venues, there is no lack of entertainment and culture here in Rochester.

History

You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate all the important historical moments that happened in Rochester. Come back and visit Susan B. Anthony’s home and learn all about the fight for women’s rights. Fredrick Douglass called Rochester home for many years and published the North Star right here in the city. But that is only the tip of the iceberg. Come back and learn all about our region’s rich and important history.

There is something for everyone’s culinary desires when visiting Rochester! We have hundreds of restaurants to satisfy every whim. Foodies can experience everything from high-end dining to rustic farm-

to-table fare and everything in-between. Whether you are craving caviar and champagne or the juiciest burger in town, Rochester has you covered.

Craft Beverage

Rochester ranks 21st in the nation when it comes to craft breweries per capita. It all started with the Genesee Brewing Company in 1878. Today there are breweries, cideries, and distilleries galore. Don’t forget to experience our region’s world-famous Finger Lakes wines as well. Take a short drive outside of the city for some of the most beautiful and diverse wine trails in the country.

lover’s dream vacation. Walk or ride along the many miles of Erie Canal towpath or the Genesee Riverway Trail. Visit the many other nature preserves, parks, and trails, too. And we get plenty of snow for those that enjoy winter sports.

On the Water

Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit! If you like to boat, paddle, fish, or swim you’re in the right place. Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, and the Finger Lakes offer a variety of water sports and summer leisure.

Shopping

When it comes to shopping, Rochester has it all. The savvy shopper can visit one of our many small boutiques and local gift shops. And don’t miss out on a visit to the Rochester Public Market—first opened in 1827—in the heart of the city.

Parks and Gardens

Rochester has earned the nickname “Flower City.” It’s no surprise then that we have a plethora of parks and gardens including Fredrick Law Olmsted’s Genesee Valley Park, Highland Park, Seneca

Park, and Maplewood Park. In addition to these historic parks and gardens there are also numerous other lovely parks including Ontario Beach Park on the shores of Lake Ontario and Turning Point Park at the edge of the Genesee River.

Whether you are into music, art, food, or flowers, Rochester has a festival for you. In fact, we have more than 140 festivals throughout the year! Our most notable ones include the annual Lilac Festival and the International Jazz Festival. If

you’re here in the fall, you can’t miss the world-famous Fringe Festival.

There is no reason to leave the kids at home. Family-friendly sites include the Strong Museum of Play, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Seabreeze Amusement Park, the Seneca Park Zoo and the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

GOLF IN ROCHESTER

Welcome golfers! Play like the professionals when you visit Rochester.

Rochester is a place where golf has thrived and grown for over a century. There are more than 60 resort, semi-private, and public courses for golfers to choose from. The area’s courses have been designed by top course architects including several by Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones,

are steeped in history and are regularly top-rated.

From April to November, Rochester and the Finger Lakes region offers a perfect setting for your next golf outing. In early spring the landscape comes to life as trees and plants begin to bloom in fabu-

lous color. The summer season provides perfect temperatures for getting out on the course— the average temperature in July is a low of 61 and a high of 82 degrees. Fall golf in Rochester is among the best in the country as the leaves change, exploding in vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. All the while, Rochester’s courses provide well-maintained greens, challenging courses and exceptional value.

THINGS TO DO DURING THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

There are limitless ways to enjoy your visit in Rochester for the PGA Championship. Read on for our list of things to do during your stay and start adding these activities to your trip itinerary.

1) Visit the Lilac Festival

Experience the Flower City in full bloom at the Rochester Lilac Festival, a free 10-day festival happening from May 12-21 at Highland Park. The festival features more than 1,800 photo-worthy lilac bushes in addition to free live music, an abundance of food options, a Wine Expo and a Beer Expo, an Art in the Park show, and more.

2) Cruise the Canal

The Erie Canal is opening early just for the PGA. Enjoy sitting along the tow path and visiting the picturesque communities (Brockport, Spencerport, Fairport, Pittsford, and more) that it runs through. 3) Get Outside

There are more than 10,000 acres of parkland in Monroe county, and this is a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the greater Rochester area. Enjoy

a hike at one of our many parks and hiking trails, bike around the city or at one of our many trails, or spend time paddling out on the water.

4) Quench Your Thirst Sip your way through Rochester; a city that has been named one of the best cities for beer in the country. The Greater Rochester area is home to more than two dozen breweries with award-winning brews. The award-winning Finger Lakes wine region is just short drive away.

5) Explore the Village of Pittsford

6) Go Out to Eat Refuel after a day on the course at one of our mouthwatering local restaurants. From fine dining to budgetfriendly options and everything

7) Bring Home a Souvenir Shop away at local boutiques, various retailers and other specialty shops in Rochester. Our small towns offer charming local shops with remarkable finds.
