FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR 2015 & 2016

WELCOME TO

UPTON BLUES FESTIVAL 2018 ONE AND ALL!

“BEST BLUES BASED FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR” OUR BIGGEST NEWS THIS YEAR IS WINNING THE U.K. BLUES AWARDS We were shortlisted against some stiff opposition from all over the UK, but came out on top – so thank you to everyone who voted for us.

You’ll find in this programme a handy “Gig Planner” so you can plan your festival from the 144 free gigs on offer over this Blues weekend. We have lots of new things going on this year - our new Big Top Stage replaces the Meadow Stage: every year, I hear someone saying after the weekend, “I never got to see the other stage, spent the whole time on the River Front.” I promise you it’s worth the walk to the Big Top Stage - it really does have a chilled-out feel. We’ve secured a full road closure for the High Street and Old Street, which will make getting to venues a lot safer for everyone. We have a new venue joining us this year: “The Rollin Hills” opposite The Old Church Tower, known as the Pepperpot tower wants to be the festival’s jam session venue, so pop in and welcome them to the festival proceedings.

We’ve improved the campsite stage which was such a success last year: Keren and the Events Horizon team will be running the campsite stage as well as dishing up freshly prepared breakfasts, tasty tarts and salads for lunch, and fab curries and other gorgeous dishes for supper. Make sure you have a look in Upton’s quaint Tudor Museum – also opposite the Pepperpot – and check out the pirate display in the window, created specially for the Blues Festival. Our own radio station, 87.7 Radio Upton Blues, is broadcasting again this year - make sure you tune in, and why not go and see them next to the Big Top Stage in the Rugby Club car park? Remember the dancers from last year? If you fancy having a go at it yourself, we have workshops on Saturday & Sunday morning in the Big Top. So put on your dancing shoes! Be sure to visit our merchandise partners Slant Riggs at their stand opposite Ye Olde Anchor Inn pub. Not only have they extended their range of merchandise on offer, but they are also our main festival programme sellers in the town this year. So that’s what we’ve been up to – now it’s down to you. Soak up the atmosphere, sample some great food and drink, and most of all enjoy the music of the multi award-winning Upton Blues Festival! Grahame Bunn - Festival Chair Have a corker and we’ll see you again in 2019

SID SQUIRES

It is with great sadness we have to inform you all of the passing of an Upton Blues Festival and Upton Town legend! Sid Squires who had been an integral part of every festival the town has ever put on, sadly passed away during the 2018 Upton Folk Festival. With his wife June they ran the burger van opposite the King’s Head, there is no other way of describing him but as a great character and a showman through and through. He was even born at a fair on Worcester racecourse! You would always get a cheeky smile or comment from him and he was always willing to help anyone that needed it. We are really happy that his widow June will still be here this year in their usual spot; please show her your love by buying a burger or giving her a thumbs up if you are passing the van. We are just a bit concerned about who is going to cut her onions for her!

SUPPORTING THE WIDER COMMUNITY Upton Blues Festival is a unique, family friendly, triple award-winning event. As the UK’s largest free Blues Festival it is less well known for its work in supporting the wider community. We fund music workshops for children in schools during the run up to the festival, culminating in the opportunity to perform on stage there. Led by Jay Riley, a small team of professional musicians give children of all abilities the chance to learn an instrument and to develop their confidence. If you want to invite Jay Riley and his team to your school he can be contacted through: www.jayrileymusic.com

JAY RILEY

Working with the Charities Commission we have managed to change the Charitable Objects of the festival. This is exciting because it now frees us to be able to give more money to a much wider range of local, educational and blues individuals and organisations. To date our Objects have been so restrictive that its been almost impossible to give the money we raise away. So shortly after the 2018 festival we will launch our new programme inviting applications for funding from the festivals available reserves. This is a very exciting opportunity for us to have an even bigger effect on the Upton, music education and blues communities. Full details to follow so ‘watch this space!’

Starting in 2017, we have recycled used instruments for the benefit of disadvantaged children attending the workshops. Upton Blues Festival pays for repairs before giving these instruments to children who can’t afford their own to play on at home. Redundant instruments are welcome! Do donate them to Upton Blues Festival. Email Grahame Bunn: chairubf@gmail.com Previously Upton Blues Festival presented £40,000 to the town for the complete repair of the dilapidated tennis/netball courts. It also gave a local school £2,500 to update its sound system. Future plans are to increase the coverage of schools and instrument recycling. The Festival trustees have also widened our objectives so we can help a greater range of local good causes. We are very grateful and hope that you continue to enjoy and support Upton Blues Festival.

MEMORIAL HALL

LECTURE JOE O’DONNELL

SUNDAY 22ND 11:00 - 12:00

HELD UPSTAIRS AT THE MEMORIAL HALL Joe O’Donnell, Limerick-born violinist and composer, worked in many top bands in the 1960s and 1970s including Granny’s Intentions, East of Eden, Headstone, the Woods Band and Thin Lizzy, before launching his solo career. In 1977 Joe released Gaodhal’s Vision, his first album as leader, on Polydor. It was recorded with top musicians of the day, including the great guitarist Rory Gallagher, with whom Joe enjoyed a close musical friendship. 40 years later he has completely re-worked the album, remixing the original 2” master tapes and adding previously unheard material, as Gael’s Vision 40th Anniversary Edition. This includes acoustic and electric guitar solos by Rory, and additional tracks by members of Joe’s dynamic band Joe O’Donnell’s Shkayla. For the Upton Blues Festival Joe will talk about his early start in music, about moving from classical and folk to rock, and his memories of working with Rory Gallagher.

UNDER THE BRIDGE

GRAFFITI PROJECT FVS are a four-man graffiti crew based in the South West, collectively hailing from Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Bristol.

After coming together through the Cheltenham hip hop and graffiti scene, they joined forces to share influences, unique styles and a mutual passion for street art and music. Hip hop is an integral focus for the group, who are well-known for writing, producing and performing in the local area and beyond. With this hunger for creating original art and music, the crew are honoured to have the chance to contribute to such a prestigious festival - in a town so close to where they grew up. On Saturday 21st, FVS will be painting a blues-themed mural under the bridge to celebrate both the festival and the town of Upton-on-Severn. Come down to witness live graffiti art at its finest, and meet the team behind it.

BRILLEAUX

JENNY WREN AND HER BORROWED WINGS

Brilleaux is a highenergy, hard driving, British-style rhythm and blues band from New Zealand in the style of bands such as Dr Feelgood, Wilko Johnson, and Nine Below Zero, and in a similar vein to earlier exponents of the genre such as The Yardbirds, early Rolling Stones, and Johnny Kid and the Pirates.

Acoustic Rhythm and Blues stripped back and blushed with country. Powerful emotional vocals delivered with an open-hearted honesty, supported by a heartbeat bass and dancing dirt-road guitars. A UK trio with a gutsy style, playing original music with an intuitive togetherness and impressive musicianship.

REVEREND ROBERT

ADAM SWEET BAND

BEX MARSHALL TRIO

Robert hails from Illinois and is a master of pre-war blues. He has delved deep into the styles of Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and other delta blues giants. In the past two decades he has become accomplished at many other early 20th-century styles including ragtime and early jazz, Hawaiian, African and Caribbean.

Adam Sweet has been performing as a guitarist since the age of 15, heavily influenced at first by the classic rock and blues of the 60s and 70s. Since then Adam has steadily honed his craft and found his voice, and with well over 1,000 gigs under his belt is now successfully carving out a solo career.

UK British Blues Award winner Bex Marshall’s unique style of guitar playing is a combined technique of slide, blues rock, ragtime and roots pickin’. Her voice is a powerful melting pot of old black woman’s heartache and rock diva soul. Bex is a writer of distinction and notability, she pushes the boundaries of blues, and now she tours with an incredibly tight three-piece band.

ROB HERON AND THE TEA PAD ORCHESTRA Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – western swing, country blues, ragtime hokum or whatever else – as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. This is no lazy pastiche, no dressingup box. They live and breathe this music and want you to get immersed with them.

RIVERSIDE STAGE 15:00 WHITLEY ACADEMY Whitley Academy is an outstanding school in Coventry and part of The RSA Academies. Whitley has taken part in the Upton workshops for the last 5 years. This year has also seen a weekly music session for confidence and self-esteem building for students in year 7-11 run by professional musicians financially supported by Upton Blues Festival.

ROBERT J HUNTER

CLARE FREE BAND

REBECCA DOWNES

Island born Robert J. Hunter combines his gruff and powerful voice with the wild thud of overdriven blues guitar.

With three highly acclaimed albums, a host of top Blues Festivals in the UK and overseas, and numerous international tours under her belt, Clare Free is a force to be reckoned with. Her roots lie in the blues but her influences go way beyond the genre, making her one of the most exciting new artists writing and performing in the blues world today.

SIMON HONEYBOY HICKLING

This is a road worn, dirty blues band that’s been honed to super tight perfection by sheer hard work and volume of shows.

Some blues bands exude talent, some set feet tapping, some engage the audience with warmth and good humour and a handful tick all of those boxes and deliver a complete performance. Simon Hickling and his band are one of the few that fulfil that description.

Birmingham-based Rebecca and her band are a ‘must see’ live act that often leaves newcomers simply blown away by the power of the performance. With her co-writer Steve Birkett alongside her, a very tight band behind, and Rebecca’s powerful voice to the fore, their music is the Blues, but they embrace elements of rock, soul, funk and jazz.

DAVE ARCARI

THE STUMBLE

“Dave plays like he got his skin turned inside out and pretty soon my skin was inside out too listening and it was all good. That boy bleeds for you – he a real down deep player and a soul man…” SEASICK STEVE

A blistering mix of blues, soul and old-school R&B, wowing audiences with the energy and virtuosity of their live performances for the past 20 years. Festival favourites in every corner of the UK and Europe. This is the band that Lazy Lester wanted to take back to the States with him and the band that the blues press widely recognise as one of the strongest live acts that the genre can boast in the UK.

After going down a storm on the Acoustic Stage in 2017 we have brought them back to play the Big Top stage for 2018. The ability to write songs that are both modern and ancient is a rare thing. The product of an arcane art of weaving in traditional influences so thoroughly that they become the warp and weft of fresh creations.

Described as “like a young Billie Holiday gatecrashing a Tom Waits Swordfishtrombones recording session”, blues and roots duo Ma Polaine’s Great Decline continue to build a reputation as an intriguing and hard to pigeon-hole act.

Alt.blues sounds owe as much to trash country, punk and rockabilly as they do pre-war Delta blues and have been showcased via ten internationally-acclaimed solo album releases.

RIVERSIDE STAGE 12:00 BIG MAC’S WHOLLY SOUL BAND Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band, is a 12-piece outfit have played together since 1990 specialising in the gritty gospel roots-based sound of soul... everything from Wilson Pickett and James Brown to Sam Cooke. KINGSIZE SLIM

With three albums under their belt, tours and supports with Wishbone Ash, Focus, Walter Trout among others and their new studio album ‘Reflections’ earning rave reviews, The Mentulls have been winning over audiences in the UK and Europe with their own unique brand of ‘prog blues rock’. The Mentulls have become known for their refreshingly unique sound that sets them apart from the rest of the crowd.

Paul Jones (Manfred Man, The Blues Band, BBC Radio 2).

JAMIE WILLIAMS & THE ROOTS COLLECTIVE

“Tom Definitely Has Something” BLUES ARCHIVE “Tom is a force to be reckoned with, his guitar skills and vocals are way beyond his years and the whole band are accomplished musicians in their own right”

Born in Romford in the early 70s, Jamie knew from an early age that music had the power to move him, but it wasn’t until he immersed himself in the sound of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Stones and the Doors, that he began to write songs as an outlet for his powerful, complex teenage emotions. Jamie is a prolific songwriter having penned over a thousand songs!

In 2005 Toby Barelli aka KING SIZE SLIM began experimenting with a new sound. A sound fully conscious of its roots but with a new story to tell. Having spent the previous 4 years touring and recording with TwoTone pioneers ‘The Selecter’ along with other Ska and Reggae luminaries, the sound was always going to be rhythm led, heavy on the bass and rootsy in the melody.

Trevor Babajack Steger is an established Blues musician, renowned for his unique playing style and exciting performances. He has recently decided to develop his solo career to delve into the Roots Blues music that has always been his passion.

From the deepest darkest jungles of Leicestershire comes a band so full of vibrant gypsy-punk energy that there is not a man or woman alive who can keep themselves from dancing like an idiot to their anarchic, upbeat folk rhythms. These hair-brained harlequins produce a sound that creeps up on your eardrums and throttles your unsuspecting brain from the inside out.

Never since the halcyon days of HORSLIPS have Irish musicians brewed such a heady mix of genres that amounts to a marriage of rock and folk. Focusing on the titular term for the future coined by Hopi Indians, O’Donnell’s palette spans the whole of the world as befits an artist who left his imprint on such milestone records as EAST OF EDEN’s “Another Eden” and JADE WARRIOR’s “Kites”.

JO HARMAN Soul. Blues. Gospel. Beatles-worthy pop. These are the core ingredients of Jo Harman’s People We Become, a modern album rooted in the classic, timeless music of past generations. “I’m not trying to fit in anywhere,” admits Harman, whose super-sized voice fills the record’s 10 tracks. “I’m just trying to write classic songs, and present them with classic production.”

KRIS BARRAS

THE QUIREBOYS

Robbie McIntosh has legendary status among his fellow musicians. His career to date includes spells as guitarist with Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Tom Jones, John Mayer and Norah Jones. Robbie has played many of the world’s top festivals and venues. Among his numerous TV and radio appearances, Robbie was with Sir Tom Jones on Jools Holland’s BBC TV show on New Years Eve 2015, and with Zucchero in 2016.

Kris is one of the UK’s most exciting BluesRock Guitarists. His blend of soul-wrenching melodies and technique has thrilled audiences worldwide for the past 13 years. His band’s unique mix of foot-stomping riffs and catchy tunes have made them one of the ‘must-see’ Blues bands of 2018. Voted in the Top 15 Blues Guitarists in the world by the readers of Music Radar/Total Guitar Magazine.

With a new album White Trash Blues the genre’s legends come thick and fast. Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry and Billy Boy Arnold are all afforded a unique Quireboys makeover. Never has Spike sounded so authentic and the band so audibly confident. There’s a neat bourbon in your glass, a good woman on your arm and a long night of hard partying ahead. All you need is the band.

ROBBIE MCINTOSH

FIRST AID COVER County Medics Ltd is a medical events company that is based in Evesham, Worcestershire and will be providing the first aid cover at this year’s Upton Blues Festival. We pride ourselves on helping support local community events and are excited to be working with the Upton Blues Festival for the second year running. It’s great to see local events get bigger and better each year and to be able to be a part of that. Please feel free to say hello to our staff over the weekend, as they will be working hard to ensure you are all safe and well. From all of us here at County Medics, have a fun, safe and pleasant festival. Nick Tuckwell (Operations Director)

COOP COMMUNITY FUND Upton Blues Festival were the happy recipients of the Coop Community Fund awarded to us last year. It was given to us as part of the Coop initiative to support local good causes or charities so that the involvement and benefits would be felt directly in the Community. With the £2360 we were able to buy Upton Primary School an upgrade to their out-of-date PA system, which would benefit the school performances, pantomimes, end-of-term plays etc. and in the wider sense all the contact that the school has in the Community.

The head teacher Mrs Julie Wills hoped that in the future the school would be able to hire out the hall for Community Events as the updated system would be more versatile for general use.

BUCKET COLLECTORS This year we are joining forces with the Nathan Tomkins Trust, a local charity started in memory of a local young man. The charity’s aim is raising awareness of mental health issues. Anything collected in the charity buckets over the weekend will be split 50/50 between the Nathan Tomkins Trust and Upton Blues Festival - both great causes and both doing great things in the local community. Please dig deep and fill the buckets with your loose change; your donation could save or help change someone’s life!
