The Uptown Art Fair, now in its 52nd year, is an internationally renowned fair that celebrates artists and their work, as well as the unique and vibrant heart of the Uptown community. The Fair was originally started as a way to increase awareness of the arts while also raising money for neighborhood projects. It has grown and changed over the years, but it remains a highly anticipated annual event, bringing over 375,000 people to the area. Each year, much of the proceeds from the fair are returned directly to the community to enhance numerous programs and activities. Recent examples include graffiti removal, neighborhood art projects, installation of numerous bike racks, and more. The Uptown Association has been producing the Art Fair since 1973, and each year we work to make it even more exciting and unique. Over time we have added the Kitchen Window Culinary Arts Competition presented for the second year by The Wedge Community Co-op, the Family Imagination Station hosted by Northern Clay Center, and a bigger and better Uptown Information Booth staffed by Uptown Association board members and community leaders who are eager to tell our visitors about the neighborhood. The UA Booth also gives out complimentary gift bags for everyone who fills out a short survey and sells exclusive

WELCOME Uptown merchandise which features both images from this year’s fair as well as nostalgic icons from the past. Uptown has been growing and changing rapidly over the last several years, and we encourage you to explore not only the amazing art, but also the hip and refreshingly unconventional community. We have seen an influx of diverse and excellent restaurants, as well as boutiques and salons, creating a dynamic combination of shopping and dining. And, of course, we always love to send visitors to our nearby lakes to enjoy the calm of a paddle boat ride or a relaxing afternoon on the beach. The Uptown Art Fair is a labor of love made possible by hundreds of dedicated volunteers, a committed staff, generous sponsors, the kindness of local businesses, and those who support the arts. We’re biased, but we believe it is the best Art Fair around, and our thousands of visitors have made it the second largest event in Minnesota (after the State Fair). Enjoy and explore, and we hope you have a great Fair experience! Sincerely, Maude Lovelle CEO, Uptown Art Fair The Uptown Art Fair Steering Committee Uptown Association Board of Directors & Staff

G BIKE VALET PARKIN Presented by Nice Ride MN WHEN: Daily 15 minutes before the fair opens until 15 minutes after it closes. WHERE: On The Mall at Humboldt Avenue (near the Midtown Greenway Trail.) This year, Copenhagenize Design Co., a Danish design firm that annually publishes a worldwide index of bike-friendly cities, listed Minneapolis as 18th on their list of 20. It was the only and first US city to make the cut. We feature 43 miles of dedicated bicycle lanes and over 80 miles of off-street bicycle paths, so there is always somewhere to ride. Nice Ride MN is a non-profit organization that provides public bike sharing to the Twin Cities. It has extensively expanded the bike share system since it began in 2010, growing from 65 to 170 stations and from 700 bikes to over 1500, and users have taken over 700,000 rides on the distinctive green bikes. Its creation is a remarkable story of cooperation by local professionals and government, as well as private funders, who all donated their time to create something great for the Twin Cities. We encourage our guests to use alternative transportation, and we hope this partnership will be an added convenience for your trip.

Make the Art Fair your destination! We’ll get you there free on August 8 & 9! Another alternative way to visit the Uptown Art Fair is the MetroTransit Art Pass. Available on Saturday and Sunday, with the downloadable pass (metrotransit.org/artpass or uptownartfair.com), you can ride buses and the light rail for free between the Uptown Art Fair, the Powderhorn Art Fair, and the Loring Park Art Festival. The Art Pass is valid on all Metro Transit bus routes and METRO lines, but not on Northstar. Show your pass to the driver, or Transit Police officer on light rail, for your free ride. For route and schedule information, visit metrotransit.org/artpass or call 612-373-3333 to speak with a transit expert.

ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS The Uptown Art Fair is a highly competitive, juried art show consisting of approximately 350 artists from around the world. After last year’s show, 33 artists were invited back to represent the 2014 Best of Show and Top 10 percent of each media. A total of 682 artists applied for the remaining spots. This year the artists come from 34 different states and 3 countries. The Uptown Art Fair follows an arduous jury process, using ZAPPlication, a state of the art online application and jury system. Each artist submits five images of their work in a consistent, high-quality digital format. A panel of five industry experts handpick the artists after previewing projections of the images on six-foot screens. Three rounds of scoring determine the final selection and waiting list for the show. The identities of the artists remain anonymous during the entire review process.

MEET THE ARTIST

R E I Z O L E D N A I BR

To call Brian Delozier’s story inspiring is an understatement, but the most remarkable aspect is the joy and humility that shine through as he tells it. He talks frequently and at length about how he has been blessed to encounter his “sparks,” the people he found along the way who pushed him or helped him when he needed it. There is Jason – the artist that pestered him until he picked up a marker, or Nancy, the woman who found him trying to hitchhike on a boat to Maui from the big island and bought him a plane ticket, or, probably most importantly, Kaesy, “the girl [I] followed to Minnesota.” His gratitude for these kindnesses and serendipitous relationships is clear. Up until he was 16, Delozier, a Pennsylvania native, was a typical active teenager. Then, in 2002, while on a skiing trip with friends, he tried to execute a complicated back flip, a decision he says ruefully that “you should never make in mid-air.” The next thing he knew, he was waking up in a hospital with a doctor standing over him saying that he had broken two vertebrae and suffered a spinal cord injury that would render him quadriplegic – paralyzed from the chest down. After months of intense therapy, he regained the ability to walk, but never gained complete use of his hands. Article by Amanda Stewart 24

Five years after his accident, Brian decided he needed to do something more than just “sitting around and feeling sad.” Despite the misgivings of his closely knit group of friends and family, he bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii, and this young man with limited mobility who had never left the East coast was headed to the Pacific with no real plan, just a need for change. There, between stints hitchhiking around the islands (At one point he was picked up by Cherilyn Hamilton, mother of Bethany Hamilton, the championship surfer who lost an arm to a shark attack in 2003. She invited him to play harmonica at Bethany’s 18th birthday party.), Brian stayed at hostels that were often populated by artists and other free spirits. It was there that he met Jason, the artist and friend who would introduce him to dots. Jason was drawing one day, and he noticed Brian seemed down. He encouraged him to try to draw. Brian protested that he couldn’t even hold a paintbrush. Jason said, “Pick up a marker and just make dots.” So, he did, and ended up working on his first piece for hours. That became a theme – he would start a work of art and stay at it for hours, in what he calls his “meditative and therapeutic dot zone.” When we met in early June, Brian said, with a bit of wonder in his voice, “I went all the way to Hawaii to learn that I love to make dots.” Delozier says it took him awhile to truly identify as an artist and take pride in what he was doing, but it’s the reaction from people who view his work that is truly gratifying. “At first glance it’s just another picture,” he says, “Upon closer inspection, they realize it’s made up of hundreds of thousands of dots, and they are in awe. I love seeing that reaction.” Brian’s commemorative piece for the Art Fair is titled, “ If the Uptown Art Wings Over Uptown. Typical of his bright, colorful, Fair were a person, and vibrant style of pointillism, it features a bird of it would be my hero.” prey, which in many cultures is considered a sign of strength and power, flying over the Uptown skyline. “It’s inspiring to see a bald eagle or red tail hawk soaring through the air,” he says. “Uptown is an exception. It is a unique place in many ways, a place where nature and urban life coincide.” As we were parting, I asked Brian what his biggest “spark” had been, and he paused before he said, “My accident. My limited physical ability forced me to find new things for happiness and purpose. I’m grateful for everything in the past that has brought me to this moment. The positive and important things come through art.” A first year exhibitor at the Uptown Art Fair, Delozier will be located at booth #316 near the northwest corner of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue. The 2015 commemorative print will be for sale at the Uptown Information Booth at the top of The Mall and at the Art Fair Merchandise tent located at the corner of Lake and Hennepin. For more information on Delozier, visit www.briansdots.com. 25

CANVAS UPTOWN

CANvas Uptown is an art activity sponsored by the Uptown Association for local businesses and organizations to showcase their products and services while driving traffic to their doorstep prior to and during the Uptown Art Fair. This fun and easy project involves businesses decorating one gallon metal cans or “hiring an artist to decorate for them. This promotional activity along with a celebratory launch event creates a pre art fair buzz, highlights the Uptown community and its dedication to the arts, and increases the number of visitors as well as creates curiosity for current customers.

To date 78 businesses have decorated a grand total of over 190 cans which will be displayed throughout the Twin Cities. Many participants will also be offering special incentives during this time to bring customers through their door to look at and admire the cans. These offers can be seen at www.uptownartfair.com/canvasuptown. Starting on July 15 and running through August 12, the cans will be auctioned online with proceeds going towards programs and services that benefit the entire community.

New to Uptown is Bottle & Bottega, an innovative art studio that conducts private and public parties combining the fun of making art with the luxury of a glass of wine. They partnered with the Art Fair on our CANvas Uptown project this year and will have a mural at the UA booth at the top of The Mall. We sat down with founder Christy Myers to learn more about her new venture and working with the Art Fair.

What are you most looking forward to and excited about at the 2015 Uptown Art Fair?

Launch Party & The Mural! We are excited to host the CANvas Uptown party in our studio for the participating businesses and artists. In addition, we are thrilled to see how the mural will turn out for the Art Fair itself. We are working with this year’s commemorative artist, Brian Delozier, and using his commemorative piece as inspiration for this year’s event. We are so honored to be working with him.

What specifically drew your company to working with the Uptown Art Fair?

What does a partnership/sponsorship with the Uptown Art Fair mean to your company?

We always knew that we wanted to be involved with the Uptown Art Fair. It is such a great platform to support local artists and provide the opportunity for the rest of the community to engage with the arts. And, that’s exactly what we are all about.

To partner with an event that simultaneously supports local businesses, local artists, and engages the community, means so much to Bottle & Bottega. We wanted to partner with the Uptown Art Fair because it meets so many of our company, and personal, values.

Is there a reason behind your presence with events?

How does being a part of the “new” Uptown area impact your business and other initiatives you may have?

As an artist and the owner of Bottle & Bottega Minneapolis, it is really important for me that we support local artists and the art community in any way that we can.

Tell me some more about the presence you expect to have at the Uptown Art Fair.

We will find out! Thus far, we have received so much support and encouragement from the Uptown area to bring our business here and we are excited to be a part of the “new” Uptown and find more ways to be involved!

We expect to create more recognition for our artists individually and create inspiration for the community to continue to explore art and find ways to engage with it. We feel our painting parties are one great way for the community to be able to do that. photo by Jon Sadeh
