FINDING RIPTIDE Hey, fellow Tulanians, Did you have an awesome summer? I know I did! I went flying, visited farms, and did a lot of fishing! Loving a good fish dinner is in my blood, on campus or on the coast. For those who haven’t met me, I’m majoring in delicious food here at Tulane, and I look forward to really buckling down to my studies with all the new things to try. Let me give you the scoop. My Tulane friends who come from the West Coast have told me about their urban food truck scenes, and of course that appealed to me – I’m all about eating on the fly! So is Mr. Ironsides, the mascot of our new waffle truck! I can’t wait to sink my beak into the New Orleans waffle specialty with hot sausage … I mean, I can’t wait to call for a Triple Threat of Spin Kick with an Onion Punch. See, if you wanna be a delicious food major, you’ve gotta learn the lingo! Mr. Ironsides will update everyone via social media about where Ironsides Waffles is parked each Tuesday and Wednesday. From the menu, it looks like he’s a locavore too: he’s got Loeb’s Onion Crunch and berries from Tulane’s adopted farm, Liuzza Farms! I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Other days, I plan to get my brain tuned up for homework at Peak Performance Plus, the new version of the Peak Performance station at Bruff. Peak Performance is all about complete nutrition for anyone with an active workout or study schedule, and now it’s “plus” because it has options for my vegetarian friends! I’ll also be “studying abroad” this week – a little bit abroad, anyway – because our dining program is actually a joint service with Loyola University. If I
need a Starbucks fix, I can get it at Loyola with the same points I use for my Tulane meals. And Loyola just introduced Slice Pizzeria, serving pizza and pasta at the Danna Center food court. I hope they have anchovies! Oh, hey, and I hear the reusable container program is being expanded to Drawing Board! Think how much landfill waste I’ll reduce if I can remember to bring my containers back all year long. Tulane is big on sustainable initiatives, like the cage-free eggs that are now served here. I was also excited to see that I can get Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate on campus! There’s so much more to tell you, so why not meet me Wednesday for lunch outside Le Gourmet? Between 11am and 2pm; Chef Toni is serving up samples of her amazing salads and sandwiches, and I can’t miss the first event of the year! Of course, it won’t be the last – Tulane has all kinds of activities for foodies like me! With all the new options, it’s convenient, delicious, and moneysaving to eat here. I don’t know why I’d need to go anywhere else! Which reminds me – remember to sign up for your meal plan! See ya around!
