UQ SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS:
HONOURS PROGRAM Our flagship program provides an extra year of high quality study. When combined with the Bachelor of Economics (three years), Honours (one year) can give you direct entry into a top overseas PhD program.
“My experience at UQ prepared me for PhD study overseas in many ways. Learning from some of the leading academics in Australia gave me the solid knowledge foundation that I require to complete a US PhD program. The UQ Economics Honours year also dramatically improved my ability for analytical thinking as well as my ability to manage deadlines. I’m now completing my doctoral studies in economics at Princeton University in the United States!” Ben Young (pictured above), Bachelor of Economics (Hons I), 2011 Archibald Scholarship winner and Princeton University PhD candidate (pictured at Princeton) on full scholarship.
The UQ Economics Honours program provides comprehensive training in modern economic thinking, concepts and techniques— providing a solid foundation for launching a successful career in economics.
HONOURS PROGRAM BENEFITS This stimulating and challenging program will enhance your applied and analytical skills as well as your knowledge of the economic research frontier. You will thrive in the small classes in which lecturers promote vigorous and interactive discussion. The program also provides training in economic research methods via a research project conducted under supervision by highly skilled academics.
FAST-TRACKING YOUR ENTRY INTO A PhD PROGRAM The Honours program provides an excellent basis for entry into PhD programs both in Australia and abroad. Past UQ School of Economics graduates who have achieved first class Honours have been accepted into leading universities in the United Kingdom including Oxford, and in North America. Recent graduates are studying at Harvard, MIT and Princeton on full scholarships.
UQ CAREER ADVANTAGE Graduates from the UQ Economics Honours program are recognised internationally for their skills and professionalism. Employers value our graduates as outstanding and highly motivated individuals. It opened up so many opportunities for me like getting to study at one of the best universities in the US. Many of my classmates have gone on to work at all sorts of amazing places, and it’s only possible because employers everywhere recognise the quality of the program.”
ELIGIBILITY FOR THE PROGRAM Honours in Economics can be undertaken following graduation with a Bachelor of Economics or a Bachelor of Arts (with an extended major in Economics). The School offers limited entry into the program to the top undergraduate students: to receive an invitation to study Honours, students need to achieve a GPA of 5.5 out of 7 in their Bachelor Degree.
SCHOLARSHIPS To attract the best and brightest students from Australia and overseas, the School awards two prestigious scholarships to students enrolled in the Economics Honours program. The annual Archibald Scholarship is awarded to an Honours student who has excelled in the third year of their Bachelor program. The Head of School invites students to apply for the Archibald Scholarship based on merit in selected third year courses. All Honours students are also eligible to apply for a 50 per cent tuition fee scholarship. For more information visit: www.uq.edu.au/ economics/scholarships-prizes-bursaries
