a challenge M OVI N G F R O M STU D I O T O S I T E In 1980, Greg Berkman, the University Architect at the time, approached me to carve heraldic shields on the Michie building cloister, which was about to be completed. I had never carved on site and neither had I carved such intricate detail before. With only three rather blunt chisels, all hand tools, I was unsure whether I was capable of such a task.
