EDITORS’S LETTER

GREETINGS! Welcome to the first edition of the magazine for 2012. I have to start this edition with a mix of good and bad news. The bad news is that we have had to skip two editions of the magazine due to circumstances beyond our control. However, the good news is that we are going to press with this edition in a much stronger position and with all guns blazing! As most of our loyal readers and brand partners will have gathered from our social media streams (#urbanlifemag); we have signed a deal to produce not one, but three shows for television under the UL banner. The first of these (Urban Life Motoring) is a high-end motoring show, which is going into production this month and scheduled to air in April. The second will be on Formula 1 (title tbc) and the third, Urban Life Lifestyle (working title), will cover everything, and more, as with the magazine. So expect to see a lot of exclusive interviews and profiles of key individuals/brands operating in the luxury sector, including: fashion, beauty, travel, watch & jewellery, art, sporting events and of course, celebrities. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is indeed a very exciting time for us. But this is also a great time for you, our readership, as the opportunity is there for us to bring you even more credible and exclusive content from our brand partners, which is in line with our editorial policy at the magazine, As for other news, we are slowly getting more and more content on to Capital Life by the day, which by the summer should be fully operational and content-rich. We are also discussing a travel club for the Black Card, so expect to see some great deals on offer for our members. And lastly, look out for the next two editions, which will have two big features celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics respectively. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions about the above or anything else, please do not hesitate to write to me at my email address below.

Until the next edition… Sincerely,

Ataur Rahman Editor-in-Chief editor@urbanlife-magazine.com

Chi Yu Japanese wellness in the heart of London Feature by Ataur Rahman

Therapists are a mixed bag; they all look great in brochures but very few actually leave you feeling like your money has been well spent. On this occasion however, I am pleased to say that a session with Mami Tsang, the founder of Chi Yu, was more than worth every penny and extremely memorable! After an initial 15 minute consultation; more thorough than any I’ve had to date, I opted for a signature massage using aromatherapy oils. Using a combination of Shiatsu, Swedish and Thai massage techniques, with a bit of reflexology, I was treated to one of the best and most effective treatments to date. It’s easy to mix brute force with technique, and as much as sometimes you just need a little ‘abuse’ to disperse all that pent up tension, nothing

10 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

compares the former with the latter. And it is this skill set that many therapists lack, especially when dealing with stressed out individuals like me who lead hectic lives along with all the negative effects it has on our bodies. Suffice to say, I walked out feeling completely de-stressed and completely rejuvenated following my session. Mami has set the bar pretty high, and will be hard to beat. I know I will definitely pay her another visit soon, and most definitely recommend you do so too. You will not be disappointed! Chi Yu signature treatments start from £67 for an hour. www.chi-yu.co.uk

HOROLOGY

SIHH Feature by Alexander Friedman – Watchonista.com The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie took place between January 16th and 20th in Geneva. The very exclusive show organised by Richemont gave rise to many parallel events, especially the Geneva Time Exhibition, as well as the presentations held in hotels by some independent watchmakers.

24 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

For one week (or even longer), Geneva was the watchmaking capital of the world ; everybody lived, breathed and ate at the rhythm of horology. The merest chocolate bar was labeled with watch logos, and it is with our heads full

of dreams that we saw the SIHH close its doors. We are going to review in detail some of the finest pieces presented during the event .

HOROLOGY

The creators from Harry Winston drew their inspiration from the lively New-Yorker culture, in order to exalt the complication by providing it with a Pop Art case.

Harry Winston - HdT3 The most explosive ‘highlight’ was not in a hotel, at the GTE or at the SIHH. It was presented directly at the Harry Winston manufactory. From a mechanical standpoint, the watch features 3 tourbillons (for 2 escapements). The design proposes something never seen before in the domain of rotary tourbillon with Grande complication. The layout and the volumes were intended to highlight the tourbillons’ spinning. While the technology of tourbillons exploded throughout the last 10 years, always pushing further the concepts of tri-dimensional architectures, the exterior designs never evolved enough to match these technological feats.

The TV screen shaped watchcase, dear to some independents, makes for a good distribution of its almost 250 grams along the wrist (the watch is 65mm by 45.9mm), and the watch remains wearable. In all likelihood, if you can pay €500k for this watch, you will be able to afford a wardrobe adapted to this machine. As a matter of fact, when one sees the Triple Tourbillon, the hour display (at 12 and 1 o’clock) becomes totally peripheral. It is the ultimate avatar of luxury mechanical watchmaking! Since the advent of quartz, the utilisation of mechanical solutions falls under aesthetics and/or dandyism. Here, more than ever, the precision time is no more than a pretext to erect a mechanical cathedral. With the HdT3, Harry Winston creates the sensation, with a watch that is far more than a ‘talking piece’. Nevertheless, regarding HW, it is first and foremost the moment when the exceptional Opus series fuses with the other collections. To be continued… www.harrywinston.com

HOROLOGY

Beaume & Mercier - Capeland 100068 These last two years, Beaume & Mercier took a neo-vintage direction. The Capeland is the flagship of this renewal; and 2012 saw the presentation of the Capeland 10068 fitted with a chronograph movement modified by Lajoux-Perret. The watch’s design was influenced by the productions of Beaume & Mercier during the 40’s. It is of course a tribute to the artillery officers’ chronographs, whose telemetric scale on a black background is based on the speed of sound. This scale, combined with the fly back functionality of the Capeland, allows for short periods of time and long distances to be measured with maximum precision. The black dial with white secondary counters features maximum legibility, whereas the red scale and the big date with its offbeat font keep with the vintage codes while offering a touch of refreshing fancy. The size, 44mm (waterproof up to 50m) and the steel case can be surprising on a vintage inspired watch. However, very large wristwatches intended for professionals (railroad staff, manufacturing) already existed during the period 30s-40s and 50s, for example the legendary Rolex 4113. 26 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

Last but not least, the gold ‘Breguet shaped‘ hands splendidly contrast with the white steel of the case. Thus, this Beaume & Mercier Capeland 10068 manages to combine a large part of the most desirable military-vintage aesthetical codes, telemetric scale, black dial, central red scale, 44mm steel case & gold hands. For €6000, it is an unquestionable achievement by B&M. www.baume-et-mercier.com

Cartier - Tank Anglaise Grand Modele. The rejuvenation initiated by Cartier a few years ago, especially with the superb Santos 100, continues with the ‘Cartier Tank Anglaise Grand modele’. If both of these watches seem to come from a sports club, the result is quite different: while the Santos 100 is bulky, with a hard work-out and steroids, the ‘Tank Anglaise Grand modele’ seems instead to have completed an intensive race course. All the measurements increase, but keep to the ideal proportions of the

28 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

golden ratio. Thus, the watch is less than 10mm thick, 36mm wide and 47mm long (including the lugs!). Its dimensions certainly increased, but they remain under 44mm, the norm for sports watches. The watch is already becoming a classic of the French horological elegance (despite its name). This balance is achieved through the rounded bevelings of the lug-middles. The convex look of the watch and its built-in bezel contribute to the feeling of harmony and softness it conveys. On the wrist, it is heavier than it seems, because the watch and its wristband

are for the moment only available in gold. Nonetheless, the watch remains comfortable as its mass is well balanced. Regarding the movement, it is one of the first models to feature the new homemade 1904MC caliber. It is an automatic movement; set at 28800v/h with a 48h power reserve, through a double barrel, this device optimises the torque and therefore the chronometric efficiency. With this ‘Tank Anglaise Grand modele’, Cartier once again demonstrates its ability to be fashionable without being a fad. www.cartier.com

HOROLOGY

Tag Heuer - Mikrogirder Tag Heuer’s research & development department achieves high horological speeds worthy of the Guinness Book. Hence, the moderate Helvetian watchmaking operation in La Chaux-deFonds is transformed into a High tech research facility worthy of NASA! After their Mikrograph, a chronograph accurate up to 1/100sec (10 times faster than a El Primero movement), Tag immediately moved on with the Mikrotimer, accurate up to 1/1000sec (100 times faster than a El Primero, 125 times faster than a 7750 caliber). Without delay and within only nine months, Tag doubled the frequency with the Mikrogirder,

1/2000sec for 720,000 v/h. The chronograph’s hand is so fast that the human eye cannot catch its movement, nor could our camera. It takes a high frequency camera adapted to sports to decompose its frenetic rotation. One could even say it is ‘horological Darwinism’. First, the Mikrograph’s regulating organ shrunk in size, then the Mikrotimer got rid of the balance and finally the Mikrogirder gave up all kinds of normal regulation, using instead, a series of oscillating beams which work after the Huygens principle. The technical explanation, German motorist-like, is rather off-putting, but the technical implementation is to die for. The sensations are totally new, since not

only the hand is invisible when it spins (the ultimate chic in society), but also the watch strongly vibrates under the power of the regulated signal. The exterior is rather sober and classic: like the Teutonic sports watches; it comprises a stylised stretcher fitted with a sports chrono whose pushers are located on top of the case, like the pocket chronographs from the 70s. The watch is approximately 44mm, the number of copies and the price are undisclosed at the moment, but as a comparison, the Mikrotimer was limited to 11 copies available for €100,000, and almost instantaneously sold out. www.tagheuer.com

HOROLOGY

Max Busser - LM1 Once again, Max Busser & Friends is the main subject of the wonder-weekbuzz (a pair of Citroen DS took you from the airport, to have a glass of champagne at the Mad Gallery). When the new watchmaker strives to build a concept and a story around its creations, Max Busser & Friends appear as Stakhanovites of the alternativehorological concept. So MB&F just opened their….Uh, how shall I put it, new public space? adult garden (even though toys are for sale as well)? mini world-fair?. Talking about a boutique would be very simplistic, much as selling watches is a pretext. It would also be inaccurate to talk about an art gallery, although it is the closest match. Let’s say it is an art gallery,

30 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

minus one zero and real workmanship. So, a boutique for a single brand, of course, but above all, a gallery dedicated to mechanical, electro-mechanical or even robotic objects. To avoid lapsing into the self-caricature pursued by some independents, MB&F presents a new line, the ‘Legacy Machines’. The work is voluntarily ‘uchronic ‘ or even ’Steam punk ‘ for the geekiest. Its postulate is: what machine would Max Busser and his Friends have invented one century ago? This ‘Legacy Machine’ is the answer, with high horological contents. While the previous machines featured tridimensional cases, here the 44mm circular case is almost classical, the third dimension shows inside the dial. The secondary dials indicate two totally

independent time zones, down to the minute. The main dial is dominated by the gigantic balance, whose large size (14mm) is further magnified by the domed crystal lens effect. The movement: as big as a pocket watch’s, benefits from an exceptional level of finishes, implemented by Kari Voutilainen. By presenting his new machine, Busser kills two birds with one stone: he surprises everybody (again), but most of all gets himself out of the independent watchmaking creativity dead ends where he proposes a totally off-beat work of classic watchmaking, with finishes by Kari Voutilainen, for a barely higher price: 72k CHF for a Voutilainen branded watch against 85k CHF for a Busser ‘Voutilainen finished’. www.mbandf.com

HOROLOGY

Parmigiani Fleurier - Tonda Calendrier Annuel Parmigiani just achieved a most brilliant SIHH. Between the dragon running after the pear of wisdom (a gold automaton clock with jade and gems), the Toric Ovale with telescopic hands, the Tonda Transforma (which can be used as a pocket watch), it was an extremely difficult choice to make… Eventually, we chose to talk about a piece seemingly classic in design but truly innovative; the ‘Tonda Calendrier annuel’. Nowadays there is a crack in the very high-end watchmaking sector, between sports-chic and dressed up watches. Since the 70s, the design of high-end watchmaking collections almost hasn’t evolved. But nowadays, Parmigiani Fleurier discreetly punches a hole in the establishment of the high-end dressy watches, by modernising the classic codes of the field. Hence, the movement of the Tonda Retrograde Calendrier Annuel, completely designed, assembled and finished in the ParmigianiFleurier manufactory, represents the horological ‘swissness’ pinnacle.

The annual calendar movement is of course automatic, to allow the use of a watch winder (so that it is not necessary to adjust the watch every time it comes out of the safe). Even if the circular-graining of the 22K gold balance is superb, one could almost regret that it blocks the light which perfectly enhances the subtle Côtes de Genève and bevelings. The dial is a surprise: a neo-classic design featuring grainy silver at the center and powdery at the periphery; you will notice the many details, especially the PF logo circled with gold. But the centerpiece is of course the Grande date, indicated by a retrograde hand instead of an aperture. The day is indicated at 9 o’clock and the month at 3 o’clock, when the moon phase for the Northern and Southern hemisphere sits at 6 o’clock. The watchcase is 40mm across, but the exclusive and dynamic lugs, together with the Hermès wide alligator sports wristband make it look like a 42mm. Parmigiani achieves a feat with the Tonda line, that of making the Swiss conservatism evolve while following the great horological tradition. www.parmigiani.ch

ONLYWATCH FOR RESEARCH ON MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY Feature by Alexander Friedman – Watchonista.com

CHARITY AUCTION Luc Pettavino has been organising charity auctions for more than 10 years in order to finance research against Duchenne disease. Charity auctions dedicated to watchmaking started in 2004, the inauguration having taken place at Lausanne with the attendance of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and of Osvaldo Patrizzi, former CEO of Antiquorum.

Duchenne Myopathy affects around 15.000 boys a year. As the number of cases is too small to get a Return on Investment, laboratories devote very little resources to this soreness. Hence, myopaths have to rely on solidarity in order to finance medical research in this field. Solidarity for Only Watch is cross-generational, as Luc Pettavino’s son, Paul, suffers from this disease. Luc Pettavino asked himself what best he could do to fight this disease. The answer is Only Watch. The auction progressively gained momentum, to reach a record breaking result for this 2011 event. When most of the good causes content themselves with titillating the generous donor’s heartstrings, Only Watch boldly chose to get two kinds of donors involved: the final bidder, namely the watch collector, but first and foremost the Great watchmaking brands. The only constraint imposed by

32 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

Only Watch to the brands is to produce unique pieces. It is up to the brands to play the game limply or whole heartedly!

The event is a beautiful showcase for the great names of watchmaking, as it takes place during the off-season, at the beginning of the calendar year. For some brands, it even can be something more, Only Watch being an ‘in vivo’ laboratory of horology. Finally, it is the ultimate dream for watch lovers, aimed to impress and be blown-away. It’s also a way to demonstrate to ‘Watchophobes’ that horology also includes passion, solidarity and glamour. 40 watches were presented during this edition of Only Watch, and as it is impossible to describe them all, I invite you to take a tour of the Only Watch section on our website for more detailed information on the event and the brands associated with it. Rather than talking about the highest bids, of which there are many, I’d like to talk about the most beautiful pieces, about the brands that devoted the most energy, talents and resources to Only Watch. The piece which adds up a maximum of superlatives is indisputably the Breguet N°506 Only Watch, and not because it’s not only the most customized, but that it’s first and foremost the most touching. The rotary dial (!) spins on

itself in 20 seconds, while playing Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The castle in the sky’ main theme! The lost child’s hand meets with the adult’s when the melody ends, as a celebration of the cross generational mutual aid. The strength of this symbol is that it illustrates the visual theme with a melody borrowed from the best of Japanese animation and demonstrates a great open-mindedness - a true artistic flair.

The most beautiful and impressive piece was without a doubt the De Bethune DB25 08-01-1297: its oven-blued titanium dial and its diamond insets represent the 1st of August 1297 sky map, when Malizia Grimaldi conquered the ‘fortress of the Rock’, by passing himself off as a monk. The central piece of the blue dial entails a double meaning: a reminder of the ‘tactful watches’ from Abraham Louis Breguet’s era, as well as a nod to Malizia Grimaldi’s sword. The sword points at the time displayed in the aperture at 6 o’clock. But history as well as technique is nothing compared to the blued titanium, a technique that only De Bethune masters. The multiple reflections vary from Black to Electric blue, passing through Ochre or Midnight blue, the dial changes with every luminosity level. It’s almost as if you owned a new type of sundial.

HOROLOGY

The most dazzling and without a doubt the most technical, was the Tag Heuer Mikrograph Monaco Only Watch. At Basel World 2011, Tag Heuer hit it hard by presenting two fully mechanical chronographs. One at a hundredth of a second: the Mikrograph, and the other at a thousandth of a second; the Mikrotimer. Usually, the wristwatch mechanical chronographs are accurate up to one tenth of a second, here Tag divided the limits altogether by 100. The Mikrograph, which ‘only’ divides them by 10, featured a very classic fitting for Basel, by revisiting a Heuer pocket chronograph design. But for Only Watch, it is fitted like a racing piece, with a steroid-boosted Monaco 1969’s casing (the mechanism’s size makes a big case necessary), with a super-contemporary look. The multiple secondary dials give priority to the chronographic display, rather than to the hour/minute, which are indicated by the two small central hands. If it seems surprising, it is because you have not seen the hundredth of a second hand’s dazzling pace, which spins around the dial in one second! Astonishing, when you go back to your personal chrono where the great second spins around in one minute that it seems slow and wheezy in comparison. The Patek Philippe 3939 is a symbol of the ‘thirty glorious’, a tiny watch after our current criteria, 33mm, that features two great complications, minute repeater (which rings at a given moment) and Tourbillon. If the above mentioned brands have chosen the extreme-customisation, Patek Philippe chose to make a huge present to research against Myopathy. By presenting a mythical model such as the 3939, whose production was called out last year, but especially by fitting the

R TO 27 PS caliber in a stainless steel case, Patek was well aware that all the sociologic parameters of ‘the biggest bid’ were met. Indeed, and it is the paradox of the super-luxury, the price does not depend on precious metal, it depends on rarity. Actually, the rarest metal at Patek for high-end watches is not platinum or gold, it is steel. Even if the quite conservative official assessment aimed at a €500k final bid was met, the commentators in fact hoped for a highest bid of €1 million. On the night of the auction, after several practice runs, the excitement is at its peak; the Patek 3939 Only Watch reaches €1 million very quickly, the audience holds its breath, 1.1 million, 1.2 million, 1.3 million, the final price seems to have no limits! Eventually, the battle between both collectors continues with a last hesitation at €1.420.000, one of them throws in the towel! The watch finally goes for €1.400.000, which is almost one third of the total amount collected during the entire event. There’s not enough space to talk about all these watches, so I invite you to visit www.watchonista.com to read , amongst others, the complete reviews of these 40 exclusive watches, especially: the Vacheron-Constantin, the Richard Mille, the BLU Gagarin, the Van Cleef & Arpels ‘De la Terre à la Lune’ or the fancy MB&F HM4 ‘Panda’… The total collected sum stands at 4.5 million Euros, the largest amount ever raised by Only Watch. This edition of Only Watch proved that the event has not only become a must for the watchmaking microcosm, but for research against Myopathy. In fact, the only downside is that Only Watch takes place every other year, so one will have to wait until 2013 for the next one.

Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S Feature by Patrick Anderson To get behind the wheel of a super sports car like the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S is always a pleasure. The 4-door saloon is very roomy and not the standard 2+2 style where rear passengers usually have to be vertically challenged in order to enjoy the ride without discomfort!

MOTORING

Normally Maseratis are understated, but still head turning. And, this model, with its new exhaust system, sporting a dashboard switch to open a bypass flap in the rear exhaust muffler, certainly commands attention with a deeper, throatier growl. This is any petrol head’s dream engine sound – a V8 rumble producing a spine-tingling note - so nobody misses you driving past. The Ferrari built all-aluminium V-8 gives an impressive acceleration quoted at 62 mph in 5.1 seconds, for which Maserati claims an ungoverned top speed of 177mph, which sadly I couldn’t attempt on a short road test. The 4.7litre engine delivers 433bhp with its ZF automatic gearbox, putting the car up there with the top luxury sports saloons. It is a fantastic auto - quick to change in manual mode with steering wheel paddles - and really smooth and seamless in automatic. The dash, featuring carbon fibre facia as well as luxurious suede and leather, gives the car the feel and luxury one would expect from an Italian thoroughbred. The suede covered steering wheel has the usual array of controls including paddles for gear changing at finger tip reach so making the drive easy. The other fittings on the model we had on test included independent electronically adjustable front and rear seats, iPod interface, 20 inch dark chrome alloy wheels, rear tinted windows and matching coloured stitching on the steering wheel and gear knob. With these added options the car will set you back £99,403 on the road. The GT S handles beautifully with an engine that sits entirely behind the front axle line, effectively making the car front-mid-engined. So the ability from turn-in to apex is smooth, with steering that gives you a great feel for the car and a pleasure to drive. The large boot will accommodate plenty of luggage and the rear seats with folding centre arm rest and 3 headrests allow plenty of space. The centre headrest can be adjusted up and down by the driver to make rear vision clear when reversing although the parking sensors are well positioned and give plenty of warning. The fuel tank is adequate, but not for the faint hearted, as 80 litres at today’s prices makes small work of £100. However, with this level of luxury, who notices! The V8 engine gave an average of 18MPG over the 800 mile road test. If I had the budget this would definitely be my optimal car. I look forward to the new Kubang SUV concept from Maserati to see how they make luxury motoring in a new format look. www.maserati.com

RANGE ROVER Evoque Feature by Patrick Anderson

The Range Rover Evoque was shown as the concept LRX back in 2008 at various international motor shows. It had its global launch at the Geneva Motor show in March 2011, followed by various promotional launches around the world attracting a lot of attention. So after flying up to Scotland for its UK launch towards the end of last year, I experienced my first drive in the new Evoque. Various combinations of 3 and 5 door models in numerous configurations and colours were lined up ready to be put through their paces. The first thing you notice about the car is its wedge shaped design – almost as if it had been squashed from behind! Inside is a different story however with plenty of room and the finish is what you would expect from a luxury SUV of the Range Rover clan. We took off into the borders in a top of the range dynamic 5-door .The car has a 2.2 diesel with automatic transmission, with auto stop start. Although for those who want something sportier this can be switched to Sport mode for a little more oomph, including gear change with the paddles on the steering column. A panoramic glass roof with power blind allows for a good all round view. The central console has an 8 inch high resolution display which has everything from sat-nav to full TV; should you get bored. We are used to cameras for rear view and parking, but the Evoque takes park assist to new levels with a 5camera surround system with tow assist, allowing for an all round view,

including those mounted under the large wing mirrors that feature blind spot indicators for vehicles coming alongside, as well as two others in the front spoiler. All the other features are becoming quite standard in many luxury cars, such as keyless entry and surround-sound audio systems. This model was fitted with an 825W Meridian 17-speaker sound system. The Bluetooth connection for mobile phones is really easy to set up with USB connectors for iPods and other music systems. You will not want for entertainment. Like its older namesake, this Range Rover has the latest off-road choices for different terrains with latest Terrain Response; including standard and full-time intelligent four-wheel drive system. So we tried it out across the heather moors of the borders on our way to lunch at Roxborough Castle The luxurious leather seats are comfortable and adjustable with the possibility of setting positions for different drivers. We drove the top of the range £38990 including luxury pack. The models range from around £27000 upwards with 2 and 4-doors, with petrol and diesel versions to suit individual preferences, whilst for the driver about town, there is even a 2-wheel front drive version. Expect to see many of these on the roads of London as a very roomy and useable city SUV. www.landrover.com

COTSWOLD AUTOSLEEPER Feature by Patrick Anderson

Having spent many a holiday camping and caravanning across the UK and Europe over the years, I jumped at the chance to try this new top-of-therange Autosleeper motorhome when the invitation landed on my desk recently. The Autosleeper is built on a high powered Peugot 2.2 turbo diesel engine - and as far as luxury on wheels go - was not bad at all. So, ready to try out the travelling lifestyle once more, off we went heading down to Snowdonia for a weekend. Although it was the end of season for many caravan parks, we found a pleasant little site with good facilities and hard footing for this big vehicle at Ryny’s Farm camping site in Betws y Coed. The vehicle has certain features you would expect as standard, such as front cab seats that can be rotated 180 degrees, so that you can face into the rear and join in on conversations or mealtimes with fellow passengers. As a mobile home, it has just about everything you could need, including; a large fridge with a separate freezer, a chemical toilet and an elegant glass washbasin in the

38 www.urbanlife-magazine.com

bathroom, a detached shower unit and even a heated towel rail. The main seating consists of two different tables; the first, freestanding for use in and outside the vehicle, and the second, a round table fitted to a pole that can be erected just behind the front seats. There are two beds; one fixed double bed and one pull-out bed in the seating area making it a good fit for a small family.

boredom in the evenings, except the DVD player which would slide out of the TV screen and the adjustable satellite dish situated on the roof. Storage space would remind one of an airliner consisting of a row of cupboards down both sides of the roof and more under the seats, beds and kitchen fittings. The only thing I had to remember was to batten everything down before driving off.

The cooker, oven and grill are gas and electric, so one is able to switch to run off the mains onsite and still use the fitted microwave. The computer controlled mains system allows the switching from mains to LPG or battery for the excellent webasto diesel/electric heating system and so despite the usual windy and rainy weather around Snowdon, we were kept pretty warm and cosy. Regrettably, the high winds meant that we could not sit outside under the side awning, although it’s clear that during summer it will be a pleasant experience, as there is even an external tap on the large LPG tank to run an auxiliary external BBQ or such.

The roof has five roof lights, several of which can be elevated, and all fitted with slats to prevent too much sun. They’re all fitted with fly screens, as are the various side windows. They are also fitted with blinds and a complete set of curtains, which maintained the privacy and cosiness needed in the vehicle. The lighting is admirable with roof lights and LED spots for reading.

There is not much to help eschew

www.auto-sleepers.co.uk

The extensive 7.16m long vehicle has excellent side mirrors and a camera mounted on the back to aid reversing (this activates in a centre rear view type mirror). The seats are well upholstered and relaxing and all-in-all, a snip for luxury travel at £61000.

This feature adds a new element to the Android, the option for the creatively inclined to create impromptu art sketches. The Galaxy Note is on the slightly bulkier side so those with a preference for aerodynamics may lean towards the Nokia Lumia 900. That said, the 5,3 inch AMOLED screen nicely facilitates the sketches, long notes and high quality video footage that many will want to indulge in. Whilst the Galaxy Note is neither a tablet nor smartphone, this is no bad thing. It is simply symbolic of the future of ground-breaking communicative technology. ART EXHIBITIONS Feature by Francesca Sobande

CONTEMPORARY MASTERS: ART REFLECTING SOCIETY 17th February-1st March 2012* Opera Gallery, 134 New Bond Street, London Contemporary Masters is a cerebral and engaging exhibition that unashamedly explores themes such as society, culture and politics within the context of high-end contemporary art. The exhibition which exceeds £20 million in worth features a host of international contemporary artist and displays a wide range of approaches to art such as sculpture, abstract, painting and distinctive street art. This insightful visual experience offers the visitor the exciting chance to view contemporary and at times,

unimaginably kooky works by boldly unconventional and innovative artists within their fields such as Damien Hirst, Julian Opie, Andy Warhol, David Mach and Jean- Michel Basquiat. Highlights of the exhibition include ‘The imminent death’ by Yayoi Kusama, a vivid acrylic on canvas of vibrant stylised flowers and contrastingly sharp black butterfly silhouettes against a colour popping patterned background and Andy Warhol’s ‘Guns’, silkscreen and acrylic canvas print which epitomises the influential Pop Art era and why he

played such a crucial role in shaping its success. This relevant group exhibition features only the best in contemporary art and showcases its progression within the chic and spacious venue that is the Opera Gallery London. *Please note, this is a short exhibition, which means it’ll be over by the time this edition is out. family members, lovers and fellow artists such as Dovid Hockney and Francis Bacon. The intricately organised exhibition is a unique collection which exemplifies Freud’s ability to convey intimacy, personal relationship and private moments so masterfully on canvas.

Anyone familiar with Freud’s intensely drama fuelled masterpieces will be well aware of his remarkable skill for producing portraiture that so powerfully captures a sense of expression, emotion and life. This exhibition is the first to focus on chronicling Freud’s portraiture and features work that dates back to the early 1940s, providing a wide span of Freud’s artistic achievements for art connoisseurs to revel in.

Lucien Freud Portraits is the much anticipated product of years of preparation and the remarkable end result is a beautiful and captivating experience which more than adequately pays homage to such a revered and iconic British artist. The countdown event for the London 2012 Festival, which is part of the Cultural Olympiad, highlights the rich heritage of the British artistic scene and could not be more perfectly located in the cultural hub that is The National Portrait Gallery.

Visitors will have the exclusive opportunity to view an incomplete painting of Freud’s assistant David Dawson and his canine companion Eli, casting a further light upon the personal world of Lucien Freud and those close to him. The exhibition features paintings of sitters such as Freud’s

EATING OUT

EATING OUT 2012 Feature by Ataur Rahman Hakkasan When Alan Yau opened Hakkasan on Hanway Place back in 2001, he redefined the concept of fine dining Chinese in an achingly cool setting for a whole decade. He has since sold the Hakkasan brand to an Abu Dhabi based investment group, but the spirit of Yau lives on, with openings across various cities around the world. My very first experience of Hakkasan was a week before the official opening of Hanway Place, as part of the standard friends and family invitations meted out by venues to perfect their pre-opening rites. I remember we were a table of four and ordered pretty much everything off the menu (I had a healthier appetite in those days!), and fell instantly in love with the food and setting. I don’t think I’ve ever shown any restaurant as much loyalty as I have Hakkasan over the years, before or since. It became an extension of my living room, as I was there more than three or four times a week. But times change and so does the flow of life. So much so, it’s taken me over a year to visit the new Mayfair branch, which has been on the cards since I heard of its opening. So, with much excitement and anticipation of what was to come, I popped in recently with an artist friend for dinner. As expected, the place was packed. The restaurant was noisy and the bar heaving with people either waiting for a table of just having a cocktail or two. Even the reception, a lot less impressive than at Hanway Place, had at least 15 people waiting to be attended to. We barely had the first sip of our drinks, a lychee juice for me – my favourite fruit juice and a Hakka, the signature house cocktail for my companion; we were ushered to our table downstairs by Adnan, the GM, previously

at Hanway Place. It was a late dinner, so we ordered almost immediately. I pretty much knew the menu by heart, which thankfully remained more or less the same, so it was a question of choosing some of my favourite dishes. On this occasion I took charge of the ordering and took in some classics for both to share. The Dim Sum Platter, with scallop shumai, har gau, Chinese chive, and shimeji (£14.00), Salt and Pepper Squid, with red chillies and curry leaf (£11.50) and Softshell Crab, with red chillies and curry leaf (£13.00) were still great hits. The dim sum and softshell crab are signature dishes, which have never failed to impress. For mains, we ordered the Spicy Venison Stir-Fry, with eryngii mushroom, baby leek and dried chilli (£25.80), Wok-Fried King Prawn in Spicy Yellow bean Sauce, with curry leaf (£26.80), Stir-Fry Lotus Root, Asparagus and Lily Bulb, in black pepper (£11.00) with some fragrant

jasmine rice on the side. The venison was spicy, but balanced, so not too overpowering. It’s a heavy dish, so the balance was struck with the starters, otherwise it would have been unworkable. We still only managed half of it between the two of us. As for the king prawns, they’re a safe bet. Succulent, tasty and just hot enough to fire up the taste buds. By the time we were finished, we could barely move, as the dishes can be quite deceptive. They fill you up very quickly! We finished off with fresh mint tea without any desserts and stuck to water and the drinks from the bar throughout. Verdict? It’s Hakkasan alright; reassuringly expensive, but no compromise on food or service. Just how I remember it... 17 Bruton Street, W1J 6QB Reservations: 0207 907 1888 www.hakkasan.com/mayfair

RESTAURANT NEWS The Cube by Electrolux Electrolux are not known for restaurants. No, in fact when one thinks of Electrolux, kitchen tools, gadgets and home electricals come to mind. So what exactly are they doing with Michelin starred chefs and ultra-modern, architectdesigned temporary dining concepts? A lot it seems, and as far as ‘pop-up’ restaurants go, the Cube by Electrolux is changing the gameplan for fine dining in a transitory setting. Key cities

around Europe are earmarked for their experiential masterplan, which started with Brussels followed by Milan back in December 2011 (until 26th April 2012). Other cities earmarked include London and Stockholm, so we’re looking forward to experiencing it first hand when it arrives here. Watch this space for further updates. EATING OUT

The Criterion The last time I dined at the Criterion was back in the late nineties, when it was under Marco Pierre White’s ownership. The memory wasn’t a particularly good one as immediately after leaving we crossed the island and into Burger King (now a flagship branch of a new-age Barclays). There were five of us and we spent a fortune on the food and wine, but left feeling completely unsatisfied. It’s a very vivid memory and one that has stayed with me, so I went in this time with mixed feelings as to how this experience will pan out. Currently run by the Georgian Sopromadze family, this landmark restaurant has got a new lease of life since they took it over around three years ago. The structural integrity has remained, with its high gilded ceiling and marble floor – not surprising as this is a Grade II listed building. The length of the restaurant runs for as far as the eye can see, from the entrance facing out on to Eros island on Piccadilly to the back with Jermyn Street on the other side of the wall. It is an impressive space and one that just screams of elegance and sophisticated dining. The omens are good; the restaurant is nearly packed on this Tuesday evening with a mixture of diners, all smartly dressed and of a certain age. My dining companion on this occasion was a close friend, who works in one of the top restaurants in London as a manager, so I was in good company should the need arise to be overly critical. I was prepared! As it turns out, the overall experience was more than pleasant and the food certainly lived up to, in fact, expectations.

Our starters were a Waldorf Salad, with grapes, walnuts, apple, celery and blue cheese (£6.95) for my companion and a Cornish Crab Bisque, with crab tortellini and coriander cress (£9.95) for myself. The salad was fresh and dressed the way my companion wanted, and the bisque delicious and light to whet my appetite. The mains consisted of a Chateaubriand, with pomme pont neuf, seasonal vegetables and béarnaise sauce (£35.00) for my companion, and a Free Range Chicken Supreme, with mashed potatoes and tenderstem

broccolis (off the set menu – approx £16.00) for myself. The Chateaubriand was served medium rare and was almost perfect. It was nice and evenly pink inside, moist and melted in the mouth, however, just a tad salty for my companion’s palate. The chicken supreme on the other hand was perfect and satisfied my immense hunger to the tee with an extra helping of side vegetables and tomato salad. We finished off with two Mixed Berry Crème Brulees, with orange and almond tuille (£9.50) with tea and coffee.

We didn’t order any wine, but the Sommelier’s recommendation was for a bottle of Chateau Plaisance Grand Cru 2004 (£59.00), which would have been a perfect accompaniment for this meal. Needless to say, we didn’t have to look for a burger chain after leaving, and in fact I’ve already been for lunch with a client since who was suitably impressed. Highly recommended. 224 Piccadilly, W1J 9HP Reservations: 0207 930 0488 www.criterionrestaurant.com
