Survey Design Recommendations

1. Organization

A survey with different types of questions (multiple choice, open-response) is fine as long as the data is properly organized. If the question has multiple parts, separation would make the data cleaning process easier. If the responses must be entered manually, ensure that each cell contains one unique data point in the interest of downstream data analysis.

2. Clarity

Clear instructions for how to answer certain questions should be provided, especially when the majority of respondents are non-English speakers. For instance, question 15 should have been prefaced with “Select only one answer” as some of the choices contradict each other.

3. Perspective

The questions included in the survey were written from the perspective of the survey designer. Instead of “Do you smoke?”, consider asking questions in the form of statements from the perspective of the respondent, such as “I am a smoker” or “I smoke regularly.”

4. Depth

Many of the questions failed to gauge more about the surveyed population. If the majority of students are ECE majors, then a more interesting question than student majors would be goals after graduation or intended profession.

5. Sensitivity

Understanding the student population culturally is a final key piece in the design of an effective survey. For instance, since many of the students are significantly older than the typical university student age, leading with a question of the year of birth could potentially be viewed as an invasion of privacy despite confidentiality agreement.

Key Questions for Continued Discussion • Fostering a community for any two-year institution is difficult. It is more difficult at a college such as UCB in which most students work full-time. Does UCB intend to allocate more resources towards creating a more tightly-knit ecosystem for students? • Given the interest in lucrative health professions and given that early childhood education is consistently undervalued as a profession despite having degree requirements, does UCB plan on launching more programs? • Given that the majority of students do not use the services of UCB, how will UCB spread awareness of the existence of such services, such as the Learning Resource Center and how does UCB intend to create a system in which students learn to rely on their school for health services?
