Manifesto

Design for Others

URBANE DESIGN INTERVENTIONS is a design firm that approaches design from a holistic point of view while attempting to integrate the different design disciplines into the design process.

Who? • A group of young designers that come from different design backgrounds, to form a multidisciplinary design team which includes the stakeholders • We help clients find what they really want • Teamwork dominates over individual framework • We believe in self-honesty to admit wrong • We believe in an infinite process of learning

URBANE DESIGN INTERVENTIONS provides design constancy services in the fields of architecture, interior design, graphic design and urban design. What is the Design Process?

Pre-concept, Data Collection, & Research

The design process is the way we work. It is a simplification of the main steps we go through, as it could also serve the clients as a site map of progress and their role in giving birth to their own project.

At this stage, the client comes with his brief of the project.

These steps allow a level of maturity to emerge from the design; a structure holding the intangible aspects of aesthetics and everything that can not be calculated otherwise.

Our role is to identify his needs and vision. We also define the design program and the scope of work. > Upon agreement the deal is born

Evaluation / Analysis

Here, we evaluate the given, and identify the project layers. These layers can be categorized as the following: Users Functions Program Legalities Site context Environmental constraints and Financial aspects. Then we set a strategy and some constraints to achieve the goals. > Informing the client of the design problematic and strategy

Concept / Synthesis

At this stage, we come up with a concept that answers the defined problematic. This is done through brainstorming sessions, evaluation of pros/cons, choosing and eliminating, and developing the distinguished idea. Then we materialize the concept. We take into consideration the areas, cost estimate, and we come up with conceptual diagrams, select materials, do 2D drawings and form 3D visualization. > Concept presentation & receiving feedback

Design Proposal & Finalization

A preliminary design emerges. The preliminary design is the step where the conceptual design is interacting more with the context. > The preliminary design is presented. Then we make developed drawings. > Another delivery and further feedback At the final stage we go into detailing specific components of the design and develop the detailed drawings. > Upon feedback we present the detailed drawings as we get the final approval and the production starts.

PROJECT 001 METS ENERGY


Project 1 / Industrial

Mets Energy New Factory

Client : Mets Energy Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2010 Scope & Status : Concept Design Type : Industrial Status : In progress Size : 6,100 sqm The project site is located in Bchamoun a mixed-use suburb with a growing industrial zone. The proposed site location is at a hillside that is predominantly of natural vegetation. The program of the project included in addition to the factory space, spaces for the factory administration. A main constraint was the steep slope of the site which was used to the proposed design. We opted for a simple white volume that take advantage of the site natural vegetation and slope to standout to it as background. We also emphasized the small volume of administration functions by creating a split and a shift in the floor levels thus giving also direction towards the views and giving visibility and distinctiveness to the management floor.

Project 2 / Residential / Commercial

Croydon Furnished Apartments

Client : HMA Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Renovation Study Type : Furnished Apartments Status : Aborted at concept design Size : 4,300 sqm The client wanted to renovate this building while maintaining its initial function as a furnished apartments building. Our proposal began with a thorough analysis of the existing building and its relation to surrounding streets and its street views in a way that serves the function of the building. Accordingly, the proposed design aims to create a street view interactive faรงade by abolishing the modular faรงade and replace it with linear elements that visually highlight the new transparent corner while simultaneously creating an interesting visual illusion from street view.

PROJECT 003 AYOUB


Project 3 / Mixed-use

Ayoub Mixed-use Building

Client : Ayoub’s Family Project Location : Monrovia, Liberia Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Concept Design Type : Mixed-use Status : In progress Size : 2,300 sqm The given program for this project was to have a mixed-use building encompassing furnished apartments of different sizes for lease and retail space at the ground floor level. The concept was initiated by creating two main volumes for the furnished apartment overlooking the two main streets adjacent to the projects lot. The outdoor space created between the two volumes was used to insert an outdoor swimming pool which was part of the client’s requirements. The two main volumes are placed on top of the commercial function platform at the ground floor level creating a secure enclosure for the swimming pool, buildings entrances and also used host the technical services.

Project 4 / Residential

Ras Annabeh Apartments Building

Client : Shaar Family Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Concept Design Type : Residential Status : Aborted at concept design Size : 4,300 sqm The project is a proposal for a ten-story apartments building in Ras Al-Nabeh an urban neighborhood in Beirut. The proposal is to cater for a specific number of apartments and areas. The concept was to create a central vertical volume that enclose the main balconies of the apartments and at the same time subdivide them into smaller a volume that breaks the redundancy of the repetitive floors. Finally, the main volume is marked by raising its height above the rest of the buildings.

PROJECT 005 ERBIL UNIVERSITY


Project 5 / Educational

Erbil University

Client : KACEC Project Location : Erbil, Iraq Project Year : 2009 Scope of work : Prepare concept design for Erbil University Type : Educational Status : Aborted at concept design Size : 23,300 sqm In this project our task was to design the buildings of a predefined campus design by an education consultant that caters for very specific and strict educational requirements. The limited site area was an additional constrain that we had to deal, trying to fit in the chosen site an ambitious spatial program. The buildings designed included colleges buildings, faculty buildings, administration building, student’s building, theater building and staff accommodation building.

PROJECT 006 AL RAWDA


Project 6 / Educational

Al-Rawda Intermediate School

Client : Meedan Engineering Project Location : Rawda- Bekaa, Lebanon Project Year : 2009 Scope of work : Concept Design Type : Educational Size : 2,500 sqm Our task was to design an elementary school that utilizes the maximum allowable area and provide accommodation for summer camp users in summertime. The two main constraints that informed the concept were the site and the client’s requirements. The site is bounded by two water streams at two parallel edges which are in turn bounded by two streets adjacent to the streams. The concept introduced three playground areas of different spatial characteristics to induce different uses by the children, in addition sufficient circulation space were incorporated in the design allowing for smooth flow at peak times. Accordingly, the building massing followed the introduced playgrounds spaces to define different playing spaces for girls/boys (requirement of client) and covered/open space to the playgrounds.

PROJECT 007 RIYADH MILITARY AIRBASE


Project 7 / Military

Spectators Venues - Riyadh Military Airbase

Client : ECMG Project Location : Riyadh, KSA Project Year : 2008 - 2009 Scope of work : Under construction Type : Institutional Status : Under construction Size : 3,400 sqm A new shed structure was to be added as cover for the spectators’ venues used for the graduation ceremony for graduating officers. In addition the structure was to encompass an indoor VIP lounge and seating area. The concept was to introduce spatially light structure that can shed all seating areas while leaving seethrough area in the shed structure above open areas allowing daylight though and giving lightness to the structure. This lightness of structure was coupled with aerodynamic lines for the shed geometry that complements the initial concept.

PROJECT 008 EL GHOUL


Project 8 /Industrial

El Ghoul Glass Factory

Client : El Ghoul Glass / Sultan Steel Project Location : Bchamoun, Lebanon Project Year : 2011 Scope of work : Design Type : Concept design Located in Bchamoun area, EL-Ghoul Glass factory is located at the main road of Bchamoun. We were hired to design the new factory that is located in an L-shaped lot. The site is unique for its long faรงade. The proposed design capitalizes on the long faรงade and the inclined adjacent road. The faรงade is reactivated in respond to the dynamism of adjacent street; different volumes are extruded in different extents at different levels massing of the building. Color and materials are again used to accentuate the faรงade composition.

PROJECT 009 PHF


Project 9 / Commercial / Interior

PHF Coffee-shops

Client : Aqaria International Project Location : Kuwait City, Kuwait Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Design Type : Interior design Status : Built PHF is a coffee shops chain that caters mainly hospitals users. The client launched an upgrade project for existing locations in addition to new locations. The given requirements were to maximize the use of allowed space in addition to have a design that provides mobility and flexibility. Our concept was to subdivide the required functions and equipment into generic movable modules which could be moved, relocated and rearranged at any time. The final design and theme of project was in harmony with new brand image that reflected healthy and fresh food.

PROJECT 011 METS ENERGY


Project 11 / Industrial

Mets Energy Factory

Client : Mets Energy Project Location : Bchamoun, Lebanon Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Design Type : Industrial Status : In progress Size : 25,000 sqm Our task in this project was a twofold job. First, design the factory building which was mainly a two-story pre-engineered steel structure that contain the main heavy equipment and production process. Second, design the worker’s building attached to the factory and the administration building. Our proposal was to integrate all buildings into a single volume in a way that responds to the irregular lot boundary geometry. The main factory building was the main volume which was subdivided visually into two horizontal volumes to tone down its mass. The worker’s building was as a transition volume from the large factory volume to the much smaller administration building volume. The workers’ building façade was animated by transferring the vertical circulation inbetween its floors to outside thus adding movement dynamism to its façade. Finally, the administration building was linked to the rest of volumes by means of an external façade that extended from the workers’ building external skin, and simultaneously creating protection for the building glass façade from extra heat and glare.

PROJECT 012 SULTAN STEEL


Project 12 / Industrial

Sultan Steel Factory

Client : Sultan Steel Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Faรงade renovation Type : Industrial Status : Under construction Size : 6,500 sqm Located in Bchamoun area, Sultan Steel factory is located at the main road of Bchamoun. Our task was to redesign the building skin while it was under construction. The aim of the design was to give a distinct identity to the two main components of the buildings: the factory volume, and the administration building volume. The administration building was highlighted by adding a glass curtain to the corner emphasizing the entrance and creating a visual link between the outside and inner offices spaces. On other hand, the factory volume became the redundant background to the administration building thus giving the latter the importance and spatial dominance.

Ayoub’s Residential Building

Ayoub Project Location : Fanar, Lebanon Project Year : 2009 Scope of work : Redesign of Building Facades Type : Residential Status : Under construction Size : 3,300 sqm Our task was to redesign the building skin which was under construction at the time. The aim of our proposal for the facades was to reconfigure the proportionally long form to become a more visually legible building mass. The new design resulted into three distinct masses that identified through material selection and solid/void different configurations.

Client : KACEC Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2009 Scope of work : Design Type : Institutional Status : Under construction Size : 13,000 sqm In the project the dominant criteria were the limited BUA and complex space program required by the ministry. The aim of the concept was to provide a building that allowed for ease of flow for the public and provide a façade treatment that allows for flexibility in the office spaces subdivisions. The building, and as per the client’s request, has minimal glass façades treatments for security purposes.

PROJECT 015 METS ENERGY


Project 15 / Industrial

Mets Headquarters

Client : Mets Energy Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2011 Scope of work : Office Building Type : Industrial Status : Under construction This project is a headquarters (Mets Energy) located at Khalde highway. Two main functions (showroom and administrative headquarter) were required for creating an easily recognizable landmark building to promote their brand. Accordingly the design of the overall structure developed out of the three factors: site, functions and client requirements. The aim of the design was to create a building mass that is legible and easily accessible from the highway. The mass of the building consists of 3 main volumes define two main functional components the show room at the ground floor and the administrative headquarters at the upper floor.).The building white color allows the building to standout against its background :( site natural vegetation), while contrasted with a glass faรงade that allows plenty of light to reach the interior.

Manoushe Snack

Client : Aqaria International Project Location : Kuwait City, Kuwait Project Year : 2011 Scope of work : Design Type : Interior design Status : Under Construction The intent of the project was to prepare an interior design for the new food chain ‘Manoushe’ in Kuwait city; which specializes in serving Lebanese traditional food. As the first location for the new chain, the location the proposed interior design will stipulate the general theme for forthcoming locations. Accordingly, the theme chosen was to use specific elements related to traditional Lebanese architecture yet in modern way. The interior pitched roof and the use of wood represent of the elements utilized for this purpose.

Project 17 /Industrial

Inkript

Client : Inkript / Sultan Steel Project Location : Morocco Project Year : 2010 Scope of work : Concept design Type : Industrial For this project our task was to devise a face-lifting intervention to the existing exterior design of Inkript factory in Morocco. The offices and administrative part of the factory building was emphasized in the new design as focal element to the large spread of the industrial building faรงade. Additionally, a changing motif was applied to the faรงade of industrial part of building creating dynamic feel along view from street.

Hamra Mosque

Client : Confidential Project Location : Beirut, Lebanon Project Year : 2012 Scope of work : Concept Design Type : Religious/ Mixed-use Status : On Hold Hamra district is the cosmopolitan and vibrant district of Beirut. The client intended to construct a modern mosque to attract youth to the religious building. As the urban mosque typology in Beirut has grew over the years to encompass several other functions (e.g. offices, retail,‌etc), this mosque also was include those function to ensure financial sustainability of the project . The client also requested the mosque design to capitalize on the strong pedestrian flow in the area. Accordingly, the challenge was to maintain the Islamic identity of the building using modern architectural vocabulary, integrate the mosque into a dominant urban context, and ensure functional harmony between the diverse functional elements of project.

Client : Premium Projects Project Location : Basra, Iraq Project Year : 2012 Scope of work : Master Planning and Architecture Type : Residential / Mixed- use Status : In progress In response to the large demand for housing in Iraq, Premium Projects initiated and affordable housing project in Basra. The project comprises of 3 main types of houses in addition multi-story apartment buildings. This is complemented with necessary community facilities and commercial/ retail functions. We were commissioned this project in attempt to provide a community based design for the housing element of the project, in addition to provide attractive urban setting to become and added value for the project.
