Letter from the editor Growing up, my family would move about every 6-8 years – typically for one reason or another, ranging from jobs, 26 to schools for us or even just because we needed a change of scenery. I can tell you with certainty that my dad fell in love with homes based on their family rooms (he’s a family man through and through), and my mom fell in love with homes almost solely based on the kitchen. Which, for her, truly was the family room. She made her famous fried chicken in that room, 80 which brought all of her kids running to the table, often with friends in toe, Anne Marie Ashley begging for her specialty. She sat at the kitchen table with my dad every morning and had a long cup of coffee and conversation. She cooked feasts for friends and family at holidays and though admittedly it was hard work – she loved every minute of the kitchen time. My husband and I are planning a move in July and you can bet that the first room I searched for when looking through these homes was the kitchen. The home we settled on is a perfect combination of my mom and dad’s tastes – a great kitchen that opens into a fabulous family room – the best of both worlds in my mind. All of this is to say, the kitchen is a mighty space. Which is why we have devoted this whole issue to the latest and greatest trends in kitchens and baths in the home. The two most important rooms to homebuyers today, according to a recent survey in USA Today, are the kitchen and bathroom, with 60% of buyers saying they’d pay more for a great kitchen and 49% willing to shell out more for a great master bath. We compiled a list of the latest trends in both, starting with The 2013 Kitchen and Bath on page 16 and breaking it down further in pages 20-24. We discuss the New Face of Luxury on page 30, proving that bigger isn’t always better. Mary Allen of M A Interiors showcases one of her gorgeous kitchens in Inspiring Spaces on page 26 with a contrasting design that brings to life some of the fantastic trends highlighted in this issue. uilt by general contractors Andrew Roby and designed by Charlotte architects Meyer Greeson Paullin Benson (MGPB), the home is a showpiece by anyone’s estimation. It is also a Gold FORTIFIED Home™, meeting the highest level of achievement for disaster resistance as determined by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Ryan Crosser, Vice President of Andrew Roby’s new coastal division, says the Atlantic Beach home is built to withstand 185 mile an hour winds and is only the second Gold FORTIFIED Home™ built in the state of North Carolina.

“We have seen first hand how hurricane-proof this house is,” says Ryan. “Hurricane Irene hit us mid-construction and there was not one water leak in the house.” The home has a hurricane foundation with pilings 16 feet into the ground. Its exterior walls on the first floor are solid concrete and the windows are all high impact hurricane proof glass. The front exterior staircase and the four outdoor shower stalls are all made of Brazilian walnut, chosen for durability as well as beauty. If going for the gold certification sounds expensive, it pays off in the long run. These homeowners stand to save between $4,000 and $6,000 on their annual insurance. Beyond its structural integrity, the home is a design masterpiece. The couple chose Andrew Roby, who built their custom home in Charlotte, to build this dream vacation home. Charlotte architects MGPB designed the home in less than twelve weeks. The owners gave the design team creative license, with a few requests. They wanted the home to fit in with others in the neighborhood, which were built in the 1950s. They also wanted their living room ceiling to resemble the hull bottom of an old ship.

“We used reclaimed 18th century beams from a mill in Virginia,” says Ryan, who sourced the materials and directed every detail of the home’s construction. “The beams are held together with mortise and tendon joints, which was a challenge.” Every piece of wood used in the home was custom and arrived prefinished from a cabinet factory. “Every cut we made to the wood had to be perfect,” he says. The home is truly one-of-a-kind, with every detail custom made. “There are 20,000 individually dipped cedar shakes on the home’s exterior,” says Ryan. “We hand-dipped them in an opaque stain and hung them to dry on clotheslines before repackaging for the subcontractor to use.” Walls of ash with oak floors give the home its beach cottage look and feel. Mint Hill Cabinet Shop in Charlotte provided the beautiful distressed kitchen cabinets, made to resemble old shutters. The homeowner, once a designer herself, provided the vision for the home’s interior. She imported the wallpaper from England and had every sheet, chair, curtain or pillow custom made. No detail was

too small. Even the individual slats of the interior blinds were custom painted to resemble driftwood. Her thoughtful design is carried through every detail of the home, including the cork walls and floors of the 300-bottle wine cellar and a door of knotty alder. The glass transoms over the shower doors are not only practical but they also add an elegant touch to the home’s architectural details. The fireplace surround, cut from one piece of solid stone, is honed soapstone, which is naturally occurring on the Crystal Coast. It complements the polished soapstone of the kitchen counters. “I was pleased to find so many skilled craftsmen in this area,” says Ryan, who explains that with the construction of this home, Andrew Roby opened its new coastal division and is now one of the largest contractors in the area. “This gold-certified home is the first of its kind here, but it won’t be the last,” he says. “We are happy to be a preferred FORTIFIED Home™ builder now. The homes we build here will be not only beautiful, they will withstand whatever Mother Nature throws their way.”v

Which colors, fixtures and finishes do the nation’s best designers use in their kitchens and baths? The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) surveys more than 300 member-designers each year for its annual trends report, in addition to handing out awards for outstanding designs in kitchens and baths. If this year’s report looks very similar to last year’s it is because the strongest kitchen and bath trends from 2012 are back again and more striking than ever, indicating these trends have true staying power, even with a few tweaks here and there. We covered the highlights for you and made an easy go-to list of top trends this year. National Kitchen & Bath Association

Sophisticated Shades of Gray Designers’ use of gray color schemes in the kitchen and bath came on strong last year, but grew even more significantly this year. The NKBA designer survey showed 55% of designers surveyed had recently used grays in their kitchen designs and 56% had used gray in the bath. White and off-white are still the most popular color schemes, but gray is quickly becoming the new neutral, in a sophisticated range of warm and cool tones for cabinets, walls and counters. Transitional Style Takes Over Defined by the NKBA as a seamless blend of traditional and contemporary, transitional style has taken the lead over traditional styles, which reined until 2012. One example of transitional style in the kitchen would be combining finishes, with the use of granite in a matte finish on the countertops and combining glass and stone on the kitchen backsplash. White Wins Again The popularity of white cabinetry has grown since 2010 and is still the preferred finish for kitchens and baths. This year 67% of designers said they were currently using white cabinets, up from 59% last year. Designers like the nice clean look and flexibility of white, which allows them to create beautiful focal points in any kitchen or bath. Fixtures and Finishes Keep it Light Again this year, there was a preference for using a combination of shimmering surfaces in kitchens and baths. Granite remains the countertop material of choice, with quartz running a very close

second. The preference for glass backsplashes has grown dramatically over the past three years, from 42% use in 2010 to 64% this year. Universal Design For All Universal design is a growing trend that seems to be having its come-out year in 2013. Referring to design that is functional, accessible and beautiful all at once, universal design elements can be seen in multi-height kitchen counters, pull out shelves, wide doorways and halls, and lever door handles and rocker switches. Other Trends With the importance of energy efficiency, LED lighting is being specified by a higher percentage of designers. Only 50% of designers said they had used LED in 2010, while last year 77% of designers were using LED lights, indicating a trend with serious staying power. Touch-activated faucets are growing in popularity, even though pullout faucets are still in the top position. The preferred finish for faucets is satin nickel, which has been on the rise since 2011. Bronze and oil-rubbed finishes are also being used more often, with polished nickel and chrome dropping in popularity. Ceramic and porcelain tile, while still the most popular flooring choices, are on the decline. Natural stone is the second most popular choice. Overall, designers continue leaning towards practicality. They are incorporating more flexible storage and easyaccess elements using a foundation of sophisticated neutrals and the clean lines of transitional styling. v 18 Urban Home triangle June/July 2013

Countertops Granite is always in style for countertops – it’s durable, gorgeous and easy to care for, and it offers such a wide range of colors and textures, it satisfies most tastes. For something different, however, try solid surface or quartz, materials that are on the rise this year, along with reclaimed wood and even concrete. “Quartz is the closest thing to bulletproof,” says award-winning designer Kathleen Donohue of Neil Kelly Designs. We’re not quite clear on when it happened precisely, but somewhere along the way, powder rooms transitioned from a luxurious respite for women (especially) and men to an all-business room in the home. What once was an extension of the swanky in-home cocktail party or comfortable dinner has moved to a drab hole beneath the stairs that requires a ‘get in/get out’ mentality. Where are the fluffy hand towels, the scented soaps and the expansive furry rugs underfoot? And the wide sinks? Even the mints and the occasional telephone? The days of the strictly functional and boring powder room are long gone; making room for style that can be just as daring as the other rooms in your home. With fearless wallpaper designs, brave colors and striking fixtures, any powder room becomes a design element of the home worthy of a Egg Collective second look and certainly an expression of taste and design, inviting guests to take their time, get themselves together and perhaps even linger for some gossip. The NKBA Trend reports for 2013 include bathroom elements like faucets with advanced technology, bold tile designs (even black! Gasp!), hammered metal sinks and even leather-clad vanities - proving that true style and adventure cannot be forgotten in this oft-overlooked room. So throw up a chandelier, lay down a geometric rug and bathe the room in unnatural light. Put up the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign and make that secret phone call. There are so many ways to play, why have limits based on dimensions?v

Large Format Tile While last year saw a resurgence of the larger subway tiles and floor tiles as large as 3 feet, this year tile is doing one better with even larger rectangular pieces that cover 3 to 6 feet at a time. Designer Spotlight: M A Interiors

Snspiring spaces Mary Allison Allen of M A Interiors in Raleigh designed this simple, yet gorgeous kitchen for Allison and Bradley Kirkman. A repetition of high contrast was used throughout the house and it continued through the kitchen with white cabinets and quartz countertops with an inset walnut top around the bar perimeter. A dark brown Blanco sink stands out from the white countertop and the use of dark brown glass subway tiles added to the effect. In keeping with the modern aesthetic, M A chose a stacked tile joint instead of the more commonly used brick joint.

The beaded inset cabinets with shaker doors and slab drawer fronts lend them to a modern yet timeless design while Sub zero and Wolf appliances make this a cook’s dream kitchen. Interior designers know that decorating with a mix of old and new, casual and formal makes rooms more interesting. They repurpose things, using an old ladder as a blanket holder or a metal workbench for a kitchen island, to lift rooms from ordinary to extraordinary. The search for these items could become a time-consuming treasure hunt - combing boutiques, antique malls and flea markets looking for the perfect item.

Recently released winners of the American Institute of Architects Housing Awards reflect these new trends. The homes feature emphasis on a higher level of design quality and organization over more square footage. Cleaner lines, less clutter and fuss with large rooms that incorporate the kitchen, family room and dining area are emerging trends. Homes are being built smaller and more environmentally conscious, focusing on comfortable, efficient living spaces. The economic boom of the mid-nineties and early millennium birthed the “McMansion” style of home. But industry experts say today’s new luxury home is being designed for the way American families actually live, rather than how they might aspire to live. Drop Zone Most families enter through the back door of the home, so the grand two-story foyer is being replaced with space in the back of the house 30 Urban Home triangle June/July 2013

called the “drop zone.” A larger version of the mudroom, the drop zone has baskets for mail, hooks for backpacks and coats, storage for shoes and winter wear and may even include lockers. The idea is to give everyone in the family a place to drop their things before it can clutter the house. Open Family Rooms Going the way of the grand foyer, the formal living room and dining room have also been replaced. The new luxury home makes better use of space with an integrated, open area that encompasses the kitchen, family room and dining area. Families live fully in these large areas, separating the spaces with furniture rather than walls. Lifestyle Center Dad’s large home office with the mahogany desk is now seen as a


waste of space. Whether it’s called a lifestyle center, a resource center, a pocket office or a home management center, the new home office is a multi-functional space built off the kitchen where parents can work from home, pay bills, scrapbook and wrap gifts and kids can do their homework and craft projects. Steam Showers Large Jacuzzi tubs are no longer must-haves in new homes, being replaced with bigger shower stalls that allow for greater movement. Steam showers are the new luxury, providing a spa-like experience that incorporates acupressure, music and even aromatherapy. Universal Design Elements of universal design are making their way into new home design, as more homeowners plan to grow old in their homes or have elderly parents moving in. Examples of this include bedrooms and full baths built on the ground floor, built-in elevators and walk-in bathtubs with doors that allow easy access and stability. Outdoor Living Spaces With the kitchen, dining and living areas combined as one, there’s less need for a separate breakfast nook. That space is being

used to make room for an outdoor living space, since more families entertain at home and enjoy their outdoor fireplaces and cooking areas. Outdoor living spaces have now become integral to the experience and use of the home.

Urban Development It’s not only how they’re building, developers are also re-thinking where they build. The American demographic is changing with young Millennials and older Baby Boomers making up more than half the American population. Soaring gas prices and environmental consciousness have impacted these homebuyers, who now want to spend less time in the car and more time in the neighborhood with family and friends. Recently released Census data appearing in the Wall Street Journal shows that city centers grew faster than suburbs in 27 of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas between July 2010 and July 2011. The article lists Charlotte as one of the top five cities in the nation where growth in the city is outpacing the suburbs. Does this trend reflect short-term fallout from the recession and the housing bust, or is it a true shift in homebuyers’ preference for cities over the space and privacy of the suburbs? Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, says some city dwellers are likely to head to the suburbs as the economy and housing market continue to mend. “I suspect the modest growth of the urban cores is a short-term phenomenon,” he says.v

Startling Orange

Patrick Casey For me, paint color is a crucial element that brings everything together.

Color is a powerful tool. It can evoke a range of feelings, from tranquility to excitement. Orange, a color most commonly associated with the fall palette of harvests and sunsets, was unexpectedly turned into spring in Alexa Hampton’s showroom at Hickory Chair during High Point Market. Her Startling orange walls were paired with exquisitely detailed upholstery and casegoods featured in shades of tangerine, spice, raisin and vanilla. Her attention to the all-important details impressed me at every turn. With the snap of a finger I said, “wrap it up, I’ll take it all!” Her fearless choice of “Startling Orange” on the walls convinced me I had to have it, so I pulled the trigger with complete confidence. For me, paint color is a crucial element that brings everything together. Great design needs to be focused, cohesive and somewhat bold. All too often I hear people say, “my room just doesn’t feel complete,” and they don’t know what to do. When advised to paint a color other than beige,

they fear the unexpected element and are unable After to snap their fingers and say, “paint it all!” Each day, therefore, it is my goal to challenge people’s creativity by staying up-to-date with the latest design trends while still being true to their style. Like Alexa, if your favorite color is orange, don’t be afraid to paint your walls orange! Seems easy for me to say, right? Well, I’m putting my money where my mouth is…time to be bold and go orange! I found my inspiration in the French Impressionists – because who was more daring than they? In fact, it was the painting Impression Sunrise by Claude Monet, which used a wide range of orange hues, which gave its name to the entire impressionist movement. Bold indeed. Seeing vibrant hues of orange in Raleigh’s near future, I began to envision “Midnight in Paris”, a 1920’s soiree anchored by my newly purchased room settings. The air will be swimming with the tune of Parlez-Moi d’Amour and guests will be toast-

ing one another with “Orange Flapper” champagne cocktails, all while admiring a design concept that is focused, cohesive, and yes, somewhat unexpected – firsthand. Transforming our 35,000 square foot Raleigh showroom into a Parisian L’Orangerie is no easy task. However, I welcome the challenge as an opportunity to succeed. We asked Ashley Thompson of Design Lines in Raleigh to give us the rundown on one of her most recently designed client spaces. Here, she explains why this space works so well and outlines some of the key design elements she used to create it. “My client recently relocated from a city loft in Boston to a home here in Raleigh. It was important to them to capture that modern city feel, but still have some personality and softness to the house. The home was designed in a cool palette of grey, white and black but touches of color were added with accessories to create warmth and personality in the décor. The morning room was designed to enjoy a leisurely morning cup of coffee, watch the golfers tee off and read the newspaper

over breakfast. However, it also needed to be functional for work during the day on the iPad or laptop and switch to a quiet comfortable dinner for two in the evening. The decorative tile in the wet bar area was selected to complement the kitchen backsplash tile which was more of a simple glass tile. It also brought out the chrome features used throughout the house. The dark cabinets mimic the color of the kitchen island, which offset the perimeter all-white cabinets. Being an avid collector and lover of fine wine, two wine refrigerators were added for storage and function. Overall, we accomplished the goal of mixing urban and comfort.”v

The Secrets of a Successful Remodel

Tackling any home renovation can be intimidating. How do you come up with the best design? Who should build it? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Depending on your past experience with the process, these questions can leave you not knowing where to begin. So what’s the secret to a successful project? I find one of the most important success factors is having a mutual respect for the relationship and roles played between the homeowner, design professional and builder. First and foremost, choosing the right experts for the job will help it to run smoothly throughout the entire project, giving you the best end result. The first step is the design process. Though it is popular for many remodeling companies to offer a design-build combination, I recommend choosing an objective third party such as an architect or design professional who is unaffiliated with the builder. Architecture and construction are specialties in their own right. I’ve found that the greatest outcomes occur when the builder is able to focus on the execution of a design produced by a

design professional. The design professional is then After able to focus on their strengths, creating a beautiful and functional space. Over the years, we have cultivated relationships with several respected architects and design professionals, and our knowledge of their skills allows us to match their expertise with various homeowner needs. A good design professional will understand the importance of getting to know your goals and how those fit within the framework of your home—not to mention the confines of the neighborhood. Though you may not be planning for a future move, resale value might become important down the road. The last thing you want to do is embark on a remodeling project that is not to scale with the characteristics of other homes in your neighborhood. Another important consideration is establishing a realistic budget. Determining this first will allow your design professional to create project plans or blueprints that are realistic with your budget. This is a classic example of how getting


a qualified builder involved in the design process earlier rather than later will prevent disappointments. The collaboration between a builder and design professional during the design process will allow the homeowner to maximize their investment and make sure the plans are realistic given the expected project development schedule. Another consideration is to establish realistic allowances and to shop for fixtures in the beginning of the project. Unrealistic allowances are often the result of two common pitfalls: poor communication between the builder and homeowner or a builder who is trying to gain your business with an unrealistically low estimate. At the very least, the result is a frustrated homeowner. Having realistic allowances may even result in credits at the end of the remodeling project. In the end, I believe that if you have good communication processes from a general contractor and design professional, coupled with a homeowner who is aware of their responsibilities in the selections process, early on in the project, you will be one step closer to a painless remodeling project.v

• Get remodeler involved early in design process. • Establish realistic project allowances. • Establish good communication practices between designer, remodeler and homeowner.

With three levels and a riverside deck, how can you go wrong?

Saxapahaw General Store Now famous for its farm to table menu, the General Store is not to be missed. A three-aisle store that can fit 35 people is serving up organic culinary masterpieces alongside some of the best deli sandwiches in the Piedmont. Cup 22 Saxapahaw’s coffeehouse, Cupp 22 is a focal point of the community serving delicious fresh brewed coffee, pastries and baked goods. Relax with your cuppa joe and watch the sunrise over the river.

The Eddy Pub A true tribute to the old cotton factory, the atmosphere in this pub is easy and fun, a perfect spot to catch sunsets over the Haw River and admire the preserved craftsmanship of the mill.
