It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Well, it’s almost Christmas, but that’s not what I’m referring to. NOVEMBURGER, the annual 30-day burger bash is once again upon us! When I dreamed up the idea of NOVEMBURGER four years ago, it was intended to be a fun, light-hearted event that would help to promote local independent restaurants and raise funds and awareness for the local United Way. Well, in the three years it has been active, NOVEMBURGER has promoted roughly 60 local restaurants and raised over $25,000 for the United Way. This year, those figures are poised to climb dramatically as the festival will be the largest one yet. A whopping total of 73 restaurants in Hamilton and Burlington are participating in NOVEMBURGER 2017. Based on the sales averages of the last few years, we hope to sell over 15,000 burgers this month, and total funds raised for the United Way are expected to top the $40,000 mark.

locally”. In fact, the dollars raised by our local United Way (Halton & Hamilton) stay in this area, and are used to fund a wide variety of programs and initiatives through nearly 100 organizations and agencies. These programs support the goals of helping kids be all that they can be; moving people from poverty to possibility; and creating healthy people and strong communities. Beyond fundraising, the United Way of Halton & Hamilton works to influence public attitudes and policies, strengthen service network capacity, and measure the impacts of donor support in the community. November can be a bit of a dreary month, and so it’s the perfect time to get a group of friends together and try a few Novemburgers. Not only will you have a delicious evening out, but you’ll be supporting the business of a local restaurant, and helping to raise funds and awareness for the work of the United Way of Halton & Hamilton. That’s pretty win-win-win if you ask me!

I should make mention of the many fantastic people and partners that make this festival possible. A massive “thank you” to all of the participating restaurants, our team at Make Media, the media channels that help promote the festival, and to all of the dedicated burger-eaters! Happy NOVEMBURGER! Hamilton's Pier 8 Development Celebrating the harbour’s industrial past, present and future

Hamilton’s waterfront has shaped the city’s history, positioning the area as a booming centre for industry and trade. However, the industrial expansion and urbanization of the city throughout the mid-1900’s also caused the harbour’s ecosystem to became polluted, leaving the waterfront unfit for recreational use. Following in the footsteps of so many other industrial cities in North America, Hamilton has seen a major shift in attitude towards improving the water and ecological quality of the area over the last several decades. This included removing thousands of tonnes of industrial waste and converting landfill space into what is now known as Bayfront Park and Pier 4. With that said, there is still a ways to go before Hamilton can start comparing their waterfront to the likes of Halifax, Toronto, or Vancouver. The West Harbour Waterfront is now taking another step in the right direction. A $143 million budget has been set aside for an ambitious redevelopment project stretching from Bayfront Park all the way to Pier 8. There are grand visions of the waterfront becoming a destination for recreation, a place to live and work, and an entertainment district with restaurants, retail shops and public spaces for all to enjoy. Given the breadth of development planned, the city will undoubtedly be rolling out the project in multiple phases. The $6.5 million development of Pier 8 Promenade Park is the next phase that has been moving forward and capturing the attention of the public. Rather then following a traditional procurement process, the city aimed to attract world-class expertise for the project by holding a limited design competition. In early spring of this year, the city put out a Request for Qualifications for firms to compete. From there, six qualified design firms were shortlisted and each offered a

$30,000 stipend (covered through the Patrick J. McNally Charitable Foundation) to develop a design proposal. According to Ward 2 Councillor, Jason Farr, the design competition format was a great success. “I was pleased to have moved the concept of a design competition for the promenade park and grateful to the McNally Foundation for funding the concept. The result has been incredible”, Farr said. The winning proposal, ‘Hamilton: Hammer City’, was submitted by Toronto firm, Forrec Ltd. “The concept speaks to our history along the Harbour. It will be welcoming, promote active living and maintain connectivity of public recreational space along the waters edge from Bayfront Park to our Hiada”, said Farr. The design pays homage to Hamilton’s industrial roots and waterfront heritage, incorporating 3 different places for people to use within the park that collectively tell the story of the harbour.

Boatwor k s P romena d e This portion of the park runs along the north edge of Pier 8 and includes a concrete and wood-paneled boardwalk connecting seamlessly with the current Waterfront Trail. Partial hulls of three steel freighter ships have been incorporated into the design to create spaces for a variety of activities and programming. Imagine you’re in the future. Allow me to give you a tour.

If you are walking along the boardwalk from the direction of Bayfront Park, you will first come across the multilevel Pumphouse Café & Games Deck. This space features outdoor tables for eating and playing board games. For those looking for a more energetic activity, make your way up to the next level, where there are a number of bocce courts and ping-pong tables. Finally, the upper level provides a quiet flexible seating area to escape from all the action. Further down the boardwalk, just past the open plaza space is a children’s playground and multi-use ball court, accessed from the street level. Next, you’ll approach Steel Beach, a sandy oasis sure to be a popular local destination that is reminiscent of Toronto’s Sugar Beach.

T he L an d in g The corner where the north edge meets the east edge of Pier 8 has been labeled ‘The Landing’. This will be a place for people to gather for ceremonies and public events and ultimately connect the two main sections of the park. The Landing will act as an observation deck complete with an art installation and a unique water feature that changes water level with the lake.

H ammer H ar b o u r The heart of the Pier 8 Promenade is located on the east edge portion of the park called ‘Hammer Harbour’.

A massive gantry crane will be repurposed to create a multi-use steel frame pavilion that will provide the infrastructure for events like farmers’ markets, art shows and outdoor concerts. Cafes, restaurants and kiosks will line the outside of a cobblestone pathway, linking the park with the new residential development planned. In the future, the site even has the potential to become an extension for the programming of Hamilton’s cornerstone festival, Supercrawl.

N e x t P ha s e Though you should be excited for this incredibly ambitious vision for Hamilton’s Waterfront to become a reality, it is important to note that this is just a preliminary design. Forrec Ltd will now enter into a contract with the city to complete a detailed design proposal with more specific and technical documents for implementation. As such, certain elements may change such as the repurposed floating barge extending the stage out to the water, which will require further investigation for its overall feasibility. You should begin to see progress quite soon. The estimated one-year construction period is slated to begin in the Spring of next year. Once complete, Hamiltonians will finally have a vibrant waterfront that they can be proud of, a destination that celebrates the harbour’s industrial past, present and future.

COOL CANADIANA Shop local with timeless pieces handmade by artists and sold independently

B

uying clothes, for some, is a tedious experience. Visiting store after store in the mall searching for the lowest price, only to find a hole or unraveling hem just months later. Stores sell clothes on trend, but unfortunately the styles don’t hold up well for future seasons. White Elephant, an independent boutique in Hamilton, was opened by coowners Jane LaBatte and Hollie Pocsai to fill a need they saw for quality garments made with care and attention to detail. They focus on Canadian-made goods, including women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, skincare, gifts and paper goods. Their decadeslong friendship meant they shared the same vision for their retail space, with whimsical wallpapers, exposed brick, and vintage furniture. Nestled in the downtown neighbourhood of James Street North, White Elephant has been the go-to spot for shoppers looking for handmade goods from independent artists since October 2008. Finding positive response in Hamilton, they opened their second brick and mortar location in Westdale Village near McMaster University in 2014. Continuing to grow, the entrepreneurs expanded to have a greater online presence, opening their online store this past April. Orders have come from all over the GTA and the United States, though many still ordering from within Hamilton, opting for the local pick up option. “The increased mentality of shopping more sustainably has grown with us,” explains Hollie. This shows how Hamiltonians see the value in supporting their community makers and business owners.

So what is sustainable shopping? Sustainable shopping is buying items that are made ethically - whether that’s through the material choices, the local workers assembling the product, or the goods made in small batches. Sometimes customers unfamiliar with this type of shop wonder why the costs seem higher than a typical store. “You know the story behind it,” says Jane. “You’re paying to know that it was made locally and ethically; you don’t need to worry about factory conditions.” White Elephant also concentrates on classic pieces you can wear for years to come. Hollie explains, “Not only do these garments hold up, but they stay in fashion. You don’t need to purchase a whole wardrobe, instead buy key pieces and slowly add on over time.”

White Elephant features over 60 different artists and designers from Canada and internationally, ensuring they are always selling quality goods their customers can be proud to own. When the shop opened, Canadian designers Birds of North America, Eve Gravel, and Valerie Dumaine were some of the first clothing brands to be sold. Nine years later, Hollie and Jane have developed great relationships with the three designers as the store provides them with exposure in Hamilton. Their pieces continue to be some of the bestselling, turning customers into shop regulars. These women’s clothing lines are both designed and manufactured in Canada, fitting perfectly with White Elephant’s values of supporting homegrown talent. Using sustainable, natural goods with a socially conscious company is something Hollie and Jane look for when deciding on a new brand to stock. Northlore Goods bodycare based in Saskatchewan is a line including facial serums, oils, and soaps created and crafted with elements found on the Canadian Prairies. Want to shop hyper-local? Hamiltonbased Cat Mamola’s ceramic jewelry is a customer favourite, with colourful porcelain shapes hung on delicate chains. Hutchison designer Sofia Del Giacco relocated to Hamilton in 2016 and makes the coziest sweaters that White Elephant can’t keep on the shelves. Co-owner Jane has her

own line of raw crystal jewelry under the name Rare Specimens, where she hand-hammers pyrite, citrine, Herkimer diamond, peridot, and more at her home in the city. Shopping at a place like White Elephant really allows you to see who you are supporting when you buy local - the artists and their families, the shop owners, and the store employees. What’s better than that? Head to James Street North, King St. West, or www.whiteelephantshop.ca to start shopping!

NOVEMBURGER was launched in 2014 as a way to bring new business to the amazing restaurants of Hamilton, while raising funds for the United Way in our community. The festival was an instant hit, and the 31 participating restaurants sold nearly 7000 burgers in only 30 days! Since then, the festival has grown each year, selling over 25,000 burgers to date. This year, we’re thrilled to have 73 restaurants participating in Hamilton and Burlington! Here’s how it works. Each participating restaurant creates a unique signature burger as their entry into the festival, which is then dubbed their NOVEMBURGER. Then YOU get to go eat Novemburgers and rate them (NOVEMBURGER.ca) for 30 days. When the dust/deliciousness settles, two winners are announced: one for the most Novemburgers sold, and one for NOVEMBURGER of the Year. Go get your NOVEMBURGER on!

Board and Tales A homegrown board game business success story board game rules down by child age, and offers map templates and a Facebook group where you can discuss scenarios and game strategy. When Urbanicity sat down with Jacob to discuss Stratos and the future of his company, Board and Tales, he was excited to reveal to us that he is developing a new game based on Hamilton called Hammer City Hustle. Mr. Chodoriwsky describes it as “a more family-oriented Grand Theft Auto meets Apples to Apples.” It’s in the early prototype testing stages with the hope to launch it next year.

When was the last time you looked someone across the table and told them you’re stealing all their sheep and there’s nothing they can do about it? If you’re into board games, it was probably not that long ago. For others, it may have been decades since we thought about cracking open a game. Why? Board games are now more popular than ever, driven largely by Millennials who grew up playing Monopoly, Risk, and Dungeons and Dragons in their parents’ basements. According to Euromonitor International, board game sales have increased from $9.3 billion in 2013 to $9.6 billion in 2016, with a projected year-over-year increase of 1%. Those numbers are in the billions. Board games sales are nothing to sneeze at. There’s a serious nostalgia factor to board games but, more importantly, it’s also a way of connecting with friends and family in an ever increasingly individualistic society. The latest Canadian census data shows that in large cities like Toronto more people are choosing apartment and condo homes over single-family residences. In a world where you meet your romantic partner over an app, and your first interaction is through a screen, how do you connect with them? Find out how crazy their mind is over a round of Cards Against Humanity. Enter Jacob Chodoriwsky, a young, talented board game designer and owner of Board and Tales, the Hamilton-based board game development company. Mr. Chodoriwksy’s company has begun establishing a reputation for creating thoughtful and adventurous board games. His first game, Stratos, started off as a “side project” that he worked on over many years, tweaking where and when he could with the help of friends and family. The earliest prototypes were painstakingly made out of hand-sanded wood, which was “way more work than anyone should have

In the meantime you can pick up Stratos at Black Knight Games, Big B Comics, Board Games Central, and 1UP Games. Or you can meet up with your buddies in a number of Hamilton board game cafes to play Stratos, including Photos by olga kwak

done, but it turned out beautifully,” Mr. Chodoriwsky recalls. You may recognize the mysterious posters that have peppered the phone poles of Locke St. What is Stratos? The name evokes mystery, fantasy, and a dash of adventure. Catching up with Mr. Chodoriwsky at this past September’s Locke St. Festival I can see that the game takes you into some fun realms. A large map of the Stratos universe stretches across the back of the tent. Stacks of the game and the expansion pack are waiting for new homes. People detach themselves from the steady slipstream of the festival to come up to the Stratos tent to ask questions and touch the playing pieces. Mr. Chodoriwsky kneels in front of a playing board to show the curious people, both young and old, how the game works. Stratos retails for $80 plus tax and the expansion pack, which you can play without the full board game, is $45. Stratos is a cross between “Settlers of Catan” and “Risk”. There are almost infinite scenarios for you to play. The rules are written in such a way to be flexible so that you can adapt the game to any age level, meaning you can play it with your five-year-old children, which Mr. Chodoriwksy has done, or break it out when friends come over to play over a few beers. The Stratos website even shows you how to scale the

Gameopolis in the International Village and Mancala Monk Board Game Café in the Crown Point neighbourhood. Stratos Mini is available at Finch on Locke, Democracy, and Collective Arts Brewery. However, if you are a fan of board games and like to host board game nights, Stratos is a great addition to your library and a great gift.

Q&A With Nathan Fleet Hamilton Film Festival's founder, Nathan Fleet answers the big questions It’s hard to believe that the Hamilton Film Festival (HFF) has been around for 12 years. Actually, fun fact – it’s been around for 15 years (previously under the name 'Lost and Underground'). They bring in films from over 50 countries and select fantastic films regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion or gender. I started covering it 2 years ago and immediately fell in love with everything from the people to the environment. Nathan Fleet, the founder, has been nothing but supportive and welcoming. With HFF taking place from November 4th to 12th, I sat down with Nathan to provide the inside scoop.

Q: HFF is known for showing "the best undiscovered local and international films”. Can you take us through the selection process? By Saverina Scozzari

Saverina Scozzari is an entertainment blogger, TV host and producer. She is also a fur mom, Starbucks addict, shopaholic, Beyoncé fan, nap queen, gym rat, and speaks fluent sarcasm. Saverina has been obsessed with all things entertainment since she was 2 years-old reading People Magazine upside down at the hair salon and always knew she wanted to be in the industry - her tween dream was to become a Much Music VJ. Now, she's an on-air personality on Cable 14's lifestyle show 'Hamilton Life', contributes posts to HuffPost Blogs and Healthy Is Hot and sometimes comments on TMZ Live. @SaverinaTV

NF: It is the same for everyone that enters. A film is submitted, a programmer will watch it, rate it and make suggestions. Once we have watched 100% of the films, we start going through our “must haves” and work back from there based on ratings, jury comments and any stand-out mentions like “award winning”. We are also very conscious of local films and really aim to make sure we are offering screen time to local and/or emerging filmmakers. Having said that, we do reject local films if they are not quite ready for a theatrical screening. Q: This year’s theme is music, something that has a very special place in your heart. Why is it important to you and how will you be personally honouring your love for music at the festival? Nf: Ah yes. I am first a musician and second a filmmaker. 12 is my favourite number and since we are in our 12th year, I decided I wanted to have some

fun this year and really enjoy the festival. I decided on a music theme and that was that. I will also be opening the festival with my band and performing a rock show at the Zoetic! I haven’t been on stage with my own band since 2000. I also decided to release my latest CD “Love Hate City”, which has been 10 years in the making, and definitely about Hamilton! Q: How has HFF evolved over the last 12 years? Nf: Slowly and organically. Starting off with just a single 90min spot for local films, we’ve opened that up to 9 days, 6 venues and 150 films! Things really picked up once word-of-mouth kicked in, probably in our 8th year, and we now get films from over 50 countries. Q: People of all ages can take part in the festival. Tell us about the Kids Can Film program? Nf: This is a program we’ve been running for a while. It used to be called Film Club Films but we wanted to open it up to any child making movies. We work with film groups year round

and are always mentoring young filmmakers and just by knowing that we offer this, many come forward wanting to screen. There is no jury process with this. Once we’ve found 60 minutes of films, we cap it. We were so fortunate to have Peregrine Discovery sponsor the entire Kids Can Film screening so it is free to attend. We also have an improv acting workshop for the kids after the movies. It will be fun! We had to move the event to The Zoetic as the Staircase tickets all went before we could open to the public.) Q: For those who have never attended HFF, why should they come out this year? Nf: Some of these films, from Iran, Germany, USA and all across Canada, will never be in theatres again and are not the kind of films that will show up in your searches. These are incredible works of art that deserve to be seen. We have something for everyone. Documentaries, Drama, Comedy, Horror, Animation, Family, Experiential and 3 live concerts! We’re screening 150 movies and I guarantee there is something in there for you.

You’re not going to want to miss this festival. The amount of people to connect with – filmmakers and film fans – is unreal. There are a number of those people that show their face each year, even if they don’t have a film showing. The energy around the HFF is undeniable and it never fails to bring out film lovers. All tickets will be processed by Hamilton’s Brüha and for the full film festival program as well as trailers, visit www.hamiltonfilmfestival.com. Photos provided by HAMILTON FILM FEST

CIMA Enoteca Pastas and pizzas and charcuterie, oh my! In Mid-October, Hamiltonians were rewarded in their patience as CIMA Enoteca opened their doors on Locke for the first time - serving up in-house made pasta, wood-fired Neapolitan Pizza, appetizers, shareable dishes with an Italian flair, and thirst-quenching cocktails. On top of all their regular items, CIMA also boasts an extensive wine and beer menu, customizable party charcuterie boards, and rotating daily features. Executive Chef and co-owner Jordan Mitchell didn’t expect to open up CIMA Enoteca on Locke Street; he loved the old Cheese Shoppe on Locke as much as the next guy, but when the space at the corner of Melbourne and Locke opened up, Jordan and the partners (Dominic Albanese and Michael Fortino) jumped on the opportunity; as did about forty other people, but their certainty and confidence in this space made for a quick decision that won them the spot with spectacular street presence. The space has undergone massive changes from where they once were with the Cheese Shoppe. Rolling doors looking out onto both Locke and Melbourne were added, an open kitchen with a wood-fire stove, and many eyecatching decorative features were added in (like their gorgeous sparkling bar and Sophia Loren mural) to make the space into the beautiful dining spot we see today. But the atmosphere of the space is only a small aspect of what makes them so worthy of the positive chatter that surrounds them, what keeps people coming back is the food! Mitchell had gained fame in the Hamilton culinary world, serving up Italian favourites at Romano’s on the east mountain for several years. Since becoming the chef at Romano’s, he has also become a co-owner in the mountain favourite, expanding his knowledge as a restauranteur and preparing himself for the new joint that is ‘CIMA’. With Neapolitan pizza, comes many rules about how to properly make it. The rules are strict and enforced by a committee in Napoli itself (The True Neapolitan Pizza Association). Rules such as: the consistency must be soft, elastic, and easy to fold, with the centre being soft to the touch, the mozzarella should appear in evenly spread patches with the green basil leaves slightly darkened by the cooking process, plus many more.

Mitchell studied the rules in-depth, put them into practice, and got them down to a science, complete with bringing in a Stefano Ferrara authentic Neapolitan pizza oven (which Mitchell states, took a lot of back and forth with strictly-Italian speakers, straight from Naples). With all this training under his belt, Mitchell is ready to share his culinary expertise downtown in the Kirkendall neighbourhood. Hungry patrons can enjoy dishes like Gnocchi al Tartufo (truffle gnocchi) and slurp up meals like Linguine Vongole (squid ink linguine with clams), and Short-Rib Pappardelle. All of their pastas are made in-house, which can be rare to find in Hamilton right now. Mitchell likens the pasta making process to “similar to playdoh”, making the pasta dough and squeezing it through a tube - the end result is anything but. Their exquisite pastas are cooked to perfection, the quality is clear. Plus the handmade pastas are balanced with some mouthwatering, paired ingredients like house-made fennel sausage, shaved fresh black truffle, and cherry tomatoes cooked until they burst. Parties can enjoy charcuterie boards to share, customizing their food experience with options like bresaola cured meat, speck cured meat, pickled endive, and an extensive offering of cheeses. For those looking for lighter fare, they have creative salads that anyone would be pleased to call their meal, such as Pear and Gorgonzola, and Heirloom Beet with whipped goat cheese and pistachio. On your first visit, make sure to try their Strozza Fritti as an appetizer (Fried cheese filled white truffle balls), this dish will break more hearts than a 90s heartthrob. Heads up, you may have some trouble pronouncing the menu names if you aren’t straight from Italy, but that’s all part of the experience! Visit them at 190 Locke St. S., Hamilton, ON L8P 4B4
