he weather is chilly, the leaves are falling and if you’re like me, I find myself wondering how the year passed so quickly. As Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner people are already out shopping for that perfect gift.

's note

This season I’ve been thinking about the act of giving and what it would take to get the unemployed get back to work so they can provide for themselves and their family. With those thoughts, I started a campaign to find products that are made and manufactured in America that I could suggest to you for gift ideas this year. You can find some great American-made gift selections on page 13, along with an article explaining why buying American-made products is so important for our struggling economy and high unemployment rate.

I also had an opportunity to meet Chanita Foster and a group of courageous and giving business women who put aside all their family issues, business ventures and daily luxuries to partner with Beyond the Game Foundation for a life-changing and unforgettable mission-trip to Africa. Read all about their journey and experiences on page 24. I am excited about the holidays this year, anticipating reuniting and having fun with my friends and family and I am thankful to GOD for being present and accounted for! That’s what the holidays are all about . . . making connections and having gratitude. Enjoy!

The Remember Them Project 25 people who changed the world The Remember Them: Champions for Humanity project is an inspirational and educational project that has as its centerpiece a world-class monument featuring 25 humanitarians. Remember Them has also developed a captivating platform that will be made available for free to educators nationwide to introduce the concepts of human rights, peace and freedom through curricular materials developed in cooperation with the King Institute at Stanford University. After developing the concepts in the monument for years, Oakland artist Mario Chiodo fully committed himself to the project following the fateful events of 9/11. Remember Them is a nonprofit project of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. The full-scale Remember Them educational monument will be placed in the Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park, a

new downtown Oakland development. The four-piece sculpture will stand 52 feet wide by 21 feet tall, cover 1,000 square feet, and use 60,000 lbs. of bronze. A special feature for the visually impaired will allow visitors to explore life-sized bronze busts of each humanitarian, and will include information in Braille. The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., will permanently display a small-scale casting of the educational monument in their museum. The Remember Them educational monument will be: • The largest cast bronze representational sculpture west of the Mississippi • The first grouping in the United States of international humanitarian portraits • The first representational monument in the United States that honors diversity The 25 Remember Them featured humanitarians are: Ralph David Abernathy, Maya Angelou, Susan B. Anthony, Ruby Bridges, Cesar Chavez Chief Joseph, Sir Winston Churchill,

Frederick Douglass, Shirin Ebadi, Mahatma Gandhi, Helen Keller, Coretta Scott King, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Harvey Milk, Mother Teresa Rosa Parks, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Oskar Schindler, Thich Nhat Hanh, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, The Unknown Rebel of Tiananmen Square, Elie Wiesel and Malcolm X. “I have chosen these humanitarians because, regardless of their individual backgrounds or missions, they share the common threads of courage, perseverance, education, sacrifice, and a sincere desire to strive for a better life for all,” Chiodo says. “From the vast numbers of humanitarians in the world worth being acknowledged, this unique grouping offers 25 individuals who have touched my heart and inspired me in times of darkness.” Visit Remember Them: Champions for Humanity at remember-them.org for more information. submitted by: CARLTON POWELL

Why not go “Top Shelf ” this year, remembering one simple rule, what you choose for your holiday decorations and your color palette should be coordinated with your formal dining area as well. A beautifully laid table can set the mood for the entire evening! Start by combining your family traditions with modern décor by adding some “LUXE” to your dinnerware. Consider a very clean yet stylish dinnerware design like Versace’s latest, “Christmas In Your Heart” Collection. By far, it is the ultimate luxury for dinnerware. This year for the holidays, dare to go from dull to decked-out with chic, colorful details that bring glamour to a seasonal affair! Knowing what table décor stands out most is the key for making your holiday dinner table the talk-of-the-town for years to come. Y

our skin is constantly bombarded with elements from the environment. The winter season ushers in extreme conditions that alter skin hydration, making it essential to exfoliate and moisturize to maintain a healthy glow during the harsh winter months. Consistent absorption of moisture and oxygen are important prerequisites to an all-over healthy skin, therefore exfoliation is recommended for the face as well as the entire body. Your complexion is made up of a top-layer of skin is called the epidermis, which reproduces every 28 days due to exposure to microorganisms in the environment. If left unattended, the epidermis holds dead skin cells until reproduction occurs. To rid the skin of dead cells exfoliate at least once a month, but preferably two to three times a week. Exfoliating with natural ingredients can be an inexpensive process for removing dry spots, dead skin, and eliminate symptoms that cause peeling and flaking. Below are three basic exfoliate formulas that will generate radiant skin during winter months. As exfoliates, sugar and coffee have the capability to draw moisture to the skin and promote cell regeneration. White Sugar Scrub - requires 1/3 cup sugar, ¼-cup extra virgin olive oil. After mixing the sugar and olive oil in a bowl, refrigerate for two hours. This particular scrub can be used daily. Brown Sugar Scrub - This recipe requires 1 cup of natural brown sugar, and enough virgin olive oil to moisten. By gently massaging these scrubs onto the skin before showering will allow the skin to spring forth with illumination. Coffee Body Scrub - The caffeine from the coffee is invigorating and will awaken the skin to its normal healthy state. This recipe calls for 2 cups of coffee grounds, ½-cup sea salt, and 2/3 tablespoon of almond oil/olive oil. Great benefits arise from using home ingredients as body scrubs—they are inexpensive and have no harsh chemicals or perfumes. Sugar scrubs are a natural exfoliate and an economical remedy for maintaining radiant skin. Lemons are another alternative. When experiencing extremely dry, itchy skin, try a Lemon Dry Skin Rub. Lemons are known for their cleansing and enhancing attributes; however they are excellent for repairing dry, cracking skin. Lemon juice increases elasticity in the skin by injecting Vitamin C, which stimulates the production of collagen. Begin a Lemon Rub by cutting the lemon in half and massaging it over the skin, highlighting dry or rough areas such as the elbows and knees. Once applied to the entire body, let the juice dry for five to ten minutes, then rinse.

When hydrating your face, moisturizing beneath the eyes is imperative 22

Holiday 2011 | UrbanLuxMagazine.com

NEXT - moisturize your skin by applying a mask to the face or the entire body.

There are countless natural masks that can be produced at home. Below are four types that can be used for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Cucumber and Olive Oil Mask- begin with 3oz. of cucumber diced very fine; 3 tsp. of olive oil; and 2 tsp. of live yogurt. Mix all ingredients into a thin paste consistency. Leave on the skin for 15 minutes, and then remove with warm water. Nourishing Honey Face Mask- begin with lemon juice from a single lemon; 1 tbsp. of honey; and ½ Avocado. Mix the ingredients, and then apply to face— leave on for 15 minutes, then remove with warm water. Glowing Skin Mask- starts with 1 egg white, ½ tbsp. of Rice Flour, 1 tablet of Calcium, and 1 tsp. of honey. Mix the ingredients well, and then apply to your face or body—leave on 20 minutes, then remove with warm water. Dry and Combination Skin Face Mask- combine 1 tbsp. of Olive Oil, 1 tbsp. of Aloe Vera, 1 tbsp. of Shea Butter. This mask is like a leave-on-conditioner for the skin. Apply after cleansing, an exfoliation, or removal of a mask. After moisturizing, lock in the hydration with Castor Oil and Jojoba Oil. Both natural oils are easily absorbed and seals in hydration at its deepest level. Remember…when hydrating your face, moisturizing directly beneath the eyes is imperative. The skin surrounding the eye sockets is the thinnest layer of skin on the face. Dryness in that area can cause early signs of aging. To eliminate the problem try a Natural Eye Moisturizer: Begin with two (2) tbsp. of Aloe Vera Gel and one (1) tbsp. of Sesame Oil. Mix the gel with the oil together by whisking until the ingredients are well combined. Apply a small amount (pea size) of the mixture gently around the orbital bone of the eye. Another excellent skin moisturizer is Olive Oil—often called liquid gold for the face and entire body. This miracle oil contains Vitamin E, which protects skin from microorganisms in the environment. Additional solutions to preventing dry skin: • Drinking plenty of water. Water flushes the body of impurities and hydrates the skin internally. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily is recommended. • Misting the face throughout the day with distilled or purified water will allow the skin to appear clean, soft, and supple. • Adjust your thermostat in your home to a lower contented temperature can prevent dry air from absorbing excessive moisture from the skin. In addition, a humidifier in the bedroom will help add hydration to skin while sleeping; • Regular exercise helps maintain healthy supple skin by improving blood circulation and promoting blood fluidity, providing nourishment to the skin. • Get your proper rest. Adequate sleep consists of seven to eight hours of rest, which allows the body to repair and regenerate the skin. These remedies will rejuvenate your skin without breaking your budget, meaning you can maintain a summer glow all during the winter season with all-natural cost-effective skin remedies that will prove to be absolutely priceless all year long. by: TIA AIKENS

f you were to ask Chanita Foster, wife, mother, businesswoman, reality TV star and philanthropist, to explain how she landed in a village in Swaziland, Africa she would first smile, then tell you about a lifelong passion for serving others. Growing up in Detroit and Oak-Park, Michigan, her passion was ignited as a Girl Scout and years later she lives to fulfill her Girl Scout Promise: “On my honor, I will try to serve God and my country, To help people at all times, and live by the Girl Scout law.”

She says maturity has deepened her will to pursue God’s purpose for her life and credits a spiritual experience for leading her to call Phil and Meg Williams at Adventures in Missions. It was that call that would define her life’s mission, which began on a journey to a village in Africa. Swaziland, Africa is located between Mozambique and South Africa. It is a beautiful country about the size of New Jersey, mostly mountainous with sloping plains. The religion there is Christianity, mixed with traditional beliefs and practices and the majority Swazis maintain their livelihood by farming or livestock herding. The mountain villagers live in huts in chronic poverty and widespread food shortages because of soil depletion, overgrazing, drought, and floods. In

26

addition to natural disasters, the social problems are numerous. The dominance of HIV-AIDS in the adult population is estimated at the highest in the world. Life expectancy has plummeted to 48.6 years, creating a dormant society for thousands of orphan children.

In 2009, when Chanita first arrived in the village, she remembers looking into the eyes of children and realizing they could benefit from every God given talent, skill, and ability, she has to offer. She also realized that the social and financial necessities were far beyond what she alone could handle. Even though just a few of the children receive some type of basic education, the dropout rate is extremely high before age thirteen, especially for girls. The younger girls are forced to leave school and join the ranks of widows to become the breadwinner of the family due to the masses of men succumbing to AIDS in the community. Because of this, human rights groups have cited legal and cultural discrimination against women and the abuse of children as social problems. Realizing the severity of these problems, but appreciating the love from the people, Chanita became a problem solver. She quickly realized that this was her answer from God—she had found her purpose. It was a life-long journey waiting for God to guide her to this point, so she wasted no time convincing her husband, NFL veteran George Foster, about the village and as a result, Beyond the Game (BTG) Foundation was born. Chanita praises George for his support as husband, father, and Director of the BTG foundation. George has been instrumental with inspiring his teammates and other athletes to join in and support the cause. With the added responsibilities of the foundation, they both work very hard to coordinate their schedules in order to secure their family, raise their children and coordinate activities for the foundation. Chanita and George are the parents of six children. They adopted their oldest daughter Amber, as a teenager. Chanita

brags that Amber, now 21, has been a gift to her life and has recently volunteered to serve in the United States Navy. Still at home with the couple are four children, ranging in age from two to six. Their sixth child is their son Majabane, who was adopted at age 15 in Swaziland where he currently lives, but visits Atlanta fairly often. Majabane helps as an organizer and interpreter for the foundation. Both Amber and Majabane play a major role helping the couple juggle their calendars between home activities in Atlanta, Ga. and BTG activities in Swaziland, Africa. Regardless of obstacles, supporters of BTG are making a difference as the foundation grows. When the foundation was founded in 2009, the goals were feeding the children and building a school. Fast forward to 2011, Beyond the Game now provides two full-meals daily to over 1,000 children in the village. The school has been completed and scheduled to open in January, 2012. Chanita acknowledges with much gratitude each and every individual contributor along with organizations, like Wal-Mart, that have come to the aid of Beyond the Game’s mission to feed, clothe, educate and simplify the lives of widows and children half a world away.

hanita enjoys the challenge of locating volunteers and conducting fundraising events for the foundation but finds it frustrating at times, explaining that the living conditions are so inconveiable in the village are that some people find it hard to relate to that level of poverty—those who could make the biggest impact fail to relate to problems that are not directly in their back yard. They are too far removed to realize the impact that just their weekend beer and wine tab could make for the women and children in the village. To bring realism and validity to the mission, Chanita also host missiontrips to Swaziland once every three months. She invites contributors and volunteers to experience for

Recently a group of business women put aside their family issues, businesses, careers, and personal relationships, for a mission trip to Swaziland, Africa. As word spread about the trip, they were surprised and amazed at the unexpected support and generous donations they received from employers, clients, coworkers, and friends. After the 14-hour flight to Swaziland, the women soon noticed the simple conveniences in America are nonexistent in the village. One of the women asked for a glass of water with ice—no such thing happening in the village and they all soon adjusted and adapted to limited bathroom facilities. Shortly after arriving, one of the women had an eye opening experience. She was helping an older Swazi woman, possibly in her late 80s, or early 90s who had come down the mountain for water. The other women could only watch in amazement as their friend, a life-long athlete, struggled to carry the water back up the mountain. Her body buckled as tears filled her eyes and flooded her face as they all realized that a lifetime of physical training as a star athlete had not prepared her body for a task an eighty year old woman had to face every day. Moments of revelation did not stop there, another wakeup call immersed observing the mountain villagers’ custom for burying family members. The grave sites are dug directly outside of the family’s hut. There is no public or private cemetery. With so many of the parents of the children dying of AIDS, the children have no choice but to see their parent’s grave every day, each and every time they play outside. Chanita states, “witnessing the children around the graves continues to be one of the most humbling and emotionally unbearable moments I have experienced so far.” [CONTINUED ON PAGE 35] UrbanLuxMagazine.com | 2011 Holiday

THANKFUL TO GIVE

[ C O N T I N U E D F R O M PAG E 2 7 ]

Real Estate Consultant, Brandi Hunter of Brandi Hunter & Associates, LLC explains, “We have all been called to serve and are blessed to be a blessing.” Lena Danielle Chenier, founder of SLEEVE Jewelry, expresses her thoughts, “If taking time out to give can change or save just one life, I am forever thankful to be a part of that blessing.” Writer, Director and Producer, Nicci Gilbert-Daniels says simply that giving reminds her of her true purpose in life. Sebrina Rowe of Tula2Nails says that, “I was thankful to give, because God has given me love, peace, joy and the ability to do for others just as HE has done for me.” Coach and Personal Fitness Trainer LaTresa “Tree” Cunningham, brings it all home for the mission by saying, “I live my life knowing that I am blessed to be a blessing to others… we should live our lives blessing and thinking of others, not just during the holiday season but every day.”

give

Sharlinda Parker of Tula2Nails said that, “Through the gift of being able to give, God shapes, and molds me into the woman HE has predestined me to be.”

to

Deanna Hamilton, President, and CEO of Circle One, Inc. said, “It was the simple things that I do, without glory, acclaim or motive, that was the true meaning of my purpose, and for that I am thankful.”

thankful

Penna’e, owner of SALON PENNA’E, described her experience by saying, “I am so thankful to God to have gone to a beautiful and awesome place and to have been able to give my time and talent to help change a life, one day at a time.”

When asked what advice Chanita has for others seeking their purpose or mission in the world, she says to start small. Start by giving in your community, or to an organization of your choice, or start at a food shelter, but do whatever you can to help somebody. She says, “What you do for others does not have to be big or grand, just start small and go for what you know you can do…in God eyes community services can’t wash away your sins, but it makes you appreciate life, and it makes you a much better person.”

It all came together for the ladies as they experienced a journey of a lifetime. As they gave of themselves, they realized their blessings and witnessed how their contributions by volunteering made a difference for masses of people.

W

hile the Fosters are grateful and appreciative of all donations of any form, monetary contributions are encouraged because it makes it much easier for the foundation to purchase supplies locally, avoiding the excessive packing fees and shipping costs for transporting goods to the village. One hundred percent of all financial donations go directly to the purchase of supplies for the children and are tax deductible.

feature

Several times a day they prepared meals for approximately one thousand villagers; they conducted AIDS awareness classes for the girls and widows; they painted the walls of the new school building, and prepared hundreds of gift bags for the children. In preparation for the school opening, they unloaded massive amounts of school supplies provided by volunteers and contributors in preparation for the children that would be attending school, and then packed the supplies into hundreds of backpacks. The days were long, but the gratitude kept coming.

With the school opening soon, monetary donations are always needed to help with teacher salaries, school supplies, food supplies, water, and the maintenance of the school. Donated goods and supplies such as clothes, “Crocs” type shoes, Bibles, and recycled plastic bags are needed most in the village.

|

A

s the mission trip began, the ladies settled in as their American lifestyle halted to the needs of the women and children in the village. The eyeliner, makeup and designer fashions disappeared. These businesswomen became servants to the mission.

In fact, in the coming year Chanita and the women of BTG are working on a project with producers Mark and Jocelyn Jacobs of Zzyz Films, Inc. The project is a documentary that centers on everyday people making a difference by volunteering and helping others. The film will bring to light people not visible on a grand scale, but those be hind the scene that are making a major impact in their communities and abroad. Chanita says, “It is time people realize the impact the gift of giving has.” She extends her greatest gratitude to Mark and Jocelyn and Zzyz Films for volunteering to take on the project. The greatest lesson Chanita, her family and the women of BTG have learned from spending time in Swaziland is that the experience has changed the value they place on material things. The people in village may not have any of the basic things we in America take for granted, but what they do have is lots of love. Even with disease and death all around, the children play and smile—if for no other reason than because they are children. They do not smile because of toys, but they enjoy toys, and not because they have an abundance of food. Chanita says they play and laugh simply because they are children and they are alive. Because of that, she says she no longer raise her children using material things to make them happy. She is raising her children to understand that even if they do not have all the things they want in life, they can laugh, play and smile because of the love she and her husband have for them. Tis The Season of

PUMPKIN EVERYTHING

F

all is here and absolutely my favorite time of the year! The crisp air, colorful leaves, and the best season for food. The oh so coveted ‘pumpkin spice latte’ comes back, along with salted caramel treats in every form. Personally, it’s my “food heaven” and I just can’t get enough. One of my favorite indulgences is the Pumpkin Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast served up by West Egg Cafe. The genius creation by Chef Patric Bell is unbelievable, beyond your wildest imagination. Breakfast becomes divine when topped off with dulce de leche & candied pumpkin seeds! You don’t need anything else to start off your autumn perfectly! This time of the year is also special to most of us because it’s when all the annual traditions come back. It’s the time of year when we all reflect on our lives & try to spend more time with our loved ones. What better way than to ‘make the spirits bright’ with holiday cocktails! Cranberry Christmas Cosmos, Holiday Bellinis, and hot buttered rum keep you warm when the weather outside is frightful. And of course, we can’t get cozy without the perfect eggnog, one of the season’s greatest pleasures. Eggnog is related to the English “sack posset”, and these drinks can be made using almost any liquor. It generally consists of milk or cream, beaten eggs, sugar, nutmeg and usually a liquor of some kind. Rum is the spirit most attributed to the drink, but brandy, cognac and whiskey are also common replacements. It is generally served cold, and one of my secrets is to mix in a pint of vanilla ice cream. It melts slowly and always has people asking for more! Happy Holidays & enjoy “fall”ing in love with food ~

THE GOLDEN ISLES OF GEORGIA

c u lt u r e

A

hassle free family or couples holiday getaway is a great way to relieve the stress of the holiday hustle and bustle. Just a five-hour drive from Atlanta, the Golden Isles of Georgia offer miles of sun-drenched beaches on four barrier islands: St. Simon’s Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simon’s Island and Jekyll Island. Each island offers a unique set of activities and hotel accommodations to suit every taste and price point. Here’s a snapshot of each:

R

oughly the size of Manhattan and the largest of the Golden Isles, St. Simon’s Island offers a rich history dating back to its English colonization. The island’s showpiece is St. Simon’s Lighthouse, a 104-ft. tall working lighthouse since 1872. Other historical stops include Bloody Marsh, where the British defeated Spanish forces, Fort Frederica National Monument built by General Oglethorpe and Christ Church, a base for Union forces in the Civil War. The island offers a plethora of activities, including 99 hotels of championship golf that feature island, marsh or island view holes. Beaches on St. Simon’s are open to the public and public pools are located in Neptune Park. The Golden Isles Marina Village offers a scuba diving center exploring the wrecks and reefs around St. Simons. From a luxury resort to a family-style vacation property, St. Simon’s offers a range of accommodations to meet any budget. The largest property on the island, Epworth by the Sea is located on the banks of the Frederica River and offers 235 rooms ranging from $64-$131 per night. The King and Prince Beach Resort is a historical hotel offering an 18-hole golf course, 142 guest rooms and 48 twoand three- bedroom villas. Rates range from $129-$189 per night. If you’re looking for more wellknown brands, the Hampton Inn offers 79 rooms ranging from $109-$159 per night and the Holiday Inn Express has 60 rooms at $99-$149 per night.

T

he southernmost of the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island was once an exclusive winter retreat for some of America’s wealthiest families such as J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller and Joseph Pulitzer. Today, 35 percent of the island is developed, accommodating a myriad of activities including 63 holes of championship golf, nine miles of beach, a tennis complex, the Summer Waves waterpark, a soccer complex, a nature center, 20 miles of bike trails and multiple fishing piers. Horseback riding is also available with rides through the Maritime Forest and salt marsh, and along beautiful Driftwood Beach. Jekyll Island’s accommodations include seven hotels. The largest, Oceanside Inn & Suites has 178 rooms with a range rates from $95-$125. Once an exclusive retreat for America’s wealthy elite, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is a historic landmark with 157 rooms. Rates range from $199$439. The Beachview Club is a boutique hotel with 38 rooms, most with an efficiency kitchen. Rates range from $149-$239.

L

ittle St. Simon’s is a privately owned island accessible only by boat. Only 20 of the island’s 10,000 acres are developed, reflecting an unhurried pace of coastal living. The island’s crown jewel is a seven-mile beach that is completely undeveloped, giving guests the rare luxury of having the entire beach to themselves. And since the island can accommodate no more than 32 guests at The Lodge at Little St. Simon’s Island, the experience is truly an exclusive retreat. Guest rooms are spread out in five cottages with no more than three rooms each, further adding to the privacy of your experience. Rates range from $450-$1050 per night for double occupancy with a two-night minimum stay on weekends. Exclusive full island reservations for up to 30 people are available for $6000-$8000 per night.

T

he centerpiece of Sea Island is The Cloister Hotel, recognized as one of the greatest hotels in the world. Here you can find a multitude of activities under one roof including tennis, water sports, horseback riding, skeet/clay target shooting, a spa and championship golf. Vintage yachts are also available to charter an evening cruise. A luxury option, The Cloister has 140 guest rooms and suites starting at $725 per night. Sea Island also has a cottage colony of 300 homes, many of which are available for vacation rentals.

Soothing the Holiday Blues T

| lux

Grieving is an intense emotional suffering that is processed differently based on an individual’s personality, coping style, personal life experiences, and religious or spiritual foundation. The process is a natural experience and requires time and acceptance to transcend. Real healing occurs moment by moment, making time and patience essential. Elisabeth KublerRoss, medical doctor and psychiatrist, states that there are five stages of grief. Recognizing the stages can help to conquer the emotional trauma of overcoming the holiday blues:

c u lt u r e

he Holiday Season is a time of joy, laughter, and intense celebration, but surviving the holidays after the death of a loved one can be emotionally overwhelming. As a result, some individuals cope with the holidays by avoiding invitations to gatherings, parties and celebrations hoping to minimize the grief.

luv

1

Denial and isolation occurs when an individual withdraws from friends and loved ones. Some people may refuse to connect to holiday activities. The resistance is normal and can be very beneficial if the thoughts remain focused on positive moments and past celebrations shared with their loved one.

2

Anger is an emotion that may be directed at the loved one, family and friends, or one’s self. During this stage grace becomes important. Allowing yourself to experience the emotion of anger without judgment is essential. The key to surviving this stage is to be extra kind to self. To cope, consider taking a mini-vacation, pamper yourself with facials or body massages, or begin a health-conscious diet and try getting adequate rest and nourishment. These recommendations will help to regain your power, perspective and control of life and your emotions.

3

Bargaining is the stage when you discover yourself making deals with God in order to make the pain vanish. Instead of attempting to relinquish the pain, accept pain as a natural process to healing and acceptance. Through acceptance, you face your feelings in a creative manner. It is often through brokenness that one is made whole. Every moment of acceptance opens another door to new opportunities. As you begin to accept the grieving process as a road to healing, the more the doors of faith, spiritual growth and emotional endurance will present themselves.

4

Depression is the stage of experiencing extreme waves of deep emotional sadness and psychological numbness. As you observe other enjoying the holiday seasons you may begin to feel deprived by the loss and lonely for the joy others are feeling. Minimize the feeling of depression by relinquishing compassion for yourself. Consider joining a support group; begin sharing your emotions with a close friend, confidant, or a family member. Also, consider professional counseling that places emphasis on grief and healing.

5

Acceptance consists of the overall recognition of the death of a loved one, realizing that death is a transition experience. In this stage, discover the power of journaling. Writing your thoughts on paper allows you the opportunity to openly express your deepest emotions in private. Some individuals also find that helping others, by volunteering at charitable organizations, making charitable donations or offering a gift in memory of the deceased, often serves as a gateway to the healing process.

Soothing the Holiday Blues will not occur overnight, but remember that through the process you will begin to transcend to a new reality. As the holidays approach, try to stay focused in the present. By operating in kinetic energy you will gradually create new patterns and new traditions for the holiday seasons. by: TIA AIKENS

Doctors advise patients to eat right and exercise for good health—better advice is to stop eating for pleasure, learn to “eat to live”

If you’re wondering how change in the seasons relate to health, after 20-plus years in medicine, I have observed repeated patterns between health and behavior that relate to the seasons of the year. During the fall, football season is in full swing, and habits are tailgating, beer drinking, and consumption of hotdogs, burgers, ribs and fries. Next is old-man winter and overeating during Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities. As New Year approaches, folks are feeling fat, uncomfortable, and guilty; so they head off to join a health club or hire a personal trainer. Then, from January to early-spring the goal is to get back into shape for the summer swim suit. As the year progresses, spring turns to summer and the flowers are blooming. We break out the grill, the beer, sodas, fried-foods, ice cream, and the party starts again. By the end of the year they recognize the neglect, so they start again, then again and again, each season failing to maintain a health

pulse

As summer turns to fall, school is back in session, football players are on the gridiron, and leaves begin lighting up the horizon. These are the symbolic images of the fall season. Winter has its own symbolic images, such as holiday shopping, an evening by the fireplace, or kids building a snow man. Each season has unique symbolic images that bring about change. There’s one consistency and that’s you, and the blessing to experience each season’s glory. Somebody said to me just the other day, “The holidays are just around the corner.” And I thought, “Yeah…it’s that time again.”

lux

s summer ends, the cool, crisp, fall breeze reminds me of a sermon called, “A New Season.” The minister spoke about the importance of capturing the seasons as an opportunity to progress, meaning that each season is an opportunity for each of us to reflect on the past and most importantly to maintain a clear, sustainable vision for our future; then act on the vision to create consistency in our lives.

A NEW SEASON

plan. Unlike the seasons though, each year our bodies get a little older and inconsistent behavior and poor eating habits take us off track, leading to poor health. My advice is to begin today to prepare for the coming winter months. Take a step back and ask yourself, “What am I doing to stay healthy?” Have you been to your doctor lately? Have you developed a health plan, and if so, what does your plan look like? I’m not talking about an insurance policy. Your “health” plan is what you do every day to take care of your health. Begin setting aside time each day for your health like you plan other activities in your life. Rarely do we give our health the attention it desires until problems surface—instead of waiting, start now. Doctors advise patients to eat right and exercise for good health—better advice is to stop eating for pleasure, learn to “eat to live” and start walking every day. Recently, I started tracking the progress of a friend on facebook. He has kept me updated on his walking regimen for the past 210 days. He’s not on the latest diet or exercise craze, yet he has lost an incredible amount of weight. He looks and feels great, simply by walking everyday and eating to live. The most important aspect to his plan is that it’s simple and sustainable. He can literally walk for the next 20 years to stay in good shape. In the coming issues in URBAN LUX, I will continue to provide additional suggestions for simple, sustainable health habits. It is my hope that the advice and information provided will resonate with you and perhaps inspire you to live well through health. That’s it for now. Until next time, peace & good heath to you during the holidays, and all year long.

The Greatest Gift of All

Staying Budget Conscious this Christmas

F

| lux

amilies across the country are still holding their wallets a little closer to the chest as the country continues to grapple with the effects of a weak economy. High unemployment rates and the underemployed are driving many consumers to more conservative spending habits, stretching each dollar to the limit. Now, with the holiday season upon us, the question is how do we stay budget conscious and refrain from out-of-control spending?

economy

ShopperTrak is already predicting that there will be fewer consumers in stores this season, although they say consumers will spend a bit more. They expect national retail sales to rise 3% during November and December compared to last year, but that foot traffic will fall by 2.2 %. Nonetheless, before you step foot into retail stores this season or log in online, keep these key tips in mind: Always set a budget and stick to it Make a list and check it twice Use cash only, NO plastic. The cash will help you stay on budget

CNN’s Contributing Finance Expert and Financial Lifestyle Coach Clyde Anderson says, “The most important thing is to remember is the real reason for the season.” The most important thing to remember, “Be true to the idea that it is the thought that counts,” Anderson says. That being said, this year try being creative, and really give thought to the person’s need instead of falling into that same trap of frivolous spending. Here are more of Clyde’s key tips for staying budget conscious this holiday season:

44

Holiday 2011 | UrbanLuxMagazine.com

1. What is the most important thing a budget conscious family should keep in mind when shopping for holiday gifts? Think about things your gift recipient can really use. Maybe it is signing them up for an acting class, self-motivation, or empowerment class to help them tap into their gifts or talents. Alternatively, maybe you have your own entrepreneurial product you can give that will benefit them in some way. Christmas is one day; make sure you are not caught up in the hype of unnecessary spending and materialism that Christmas ensues. 2. Layaways seem to be making a comeback. Is this always the best option when purchasing for the holidays? Not always. Be cognizant of the additional fees that are sometimes associated with lay-away plans, which are added to your purchase. If the fees are low, go for it. Secure the items you intend to purchase and ensure you finalize the purchase on or before the expiration date of the lay-way term. It is also good if the items are on sale, because you will be able to take advantage of the early sales before crunch time arrives. 3. How should the budget conscious buyer approach big-ticket purchases like electronics, TVs, computers, etc? Where are the deals? You usually will find the best deals online. Also, buy early and check out stores like Wal-Mart that offer lay-away for electronics. Try www.Shopobot.com to compare prices and see if a deal is really a deal. 4. Are the best deals online? Is online shopping the big budget secret? It depends on the item. Try these sites to find some great deals: a) slickdeals.net d) fatwallet.com b) dealspl.us e) pricegrabber.com c) dealnews.com Just remember to include the shipping cost when comparing online retailers vs. brick and mortar stores. 5. Should consumers stay away from gift cards, given all the rules and often, hidden fees? Gift cards are convenient and hassle-free for the gift giver, but buyers beware. Check to see if the gift card carries additional fees or expiration dates or loses value over time. Also, make sure that the store for the gift card is not planning to go out of business or file bankruptcy. 6. So much of the giving at the holidays is psychological. People want to spend money they do not have. How do we get over not having the money to buy something for everybody? Be creative! Cook for someone, clean their home, clean their yard, wash their car for a few months, babysit, do things that will truly help and add value that may not cost you anything but a little time and effort. Let it be known upfront that this holiday will be different so everyone is on the same page. Get over thinking everything has to be big, expensive, and stylish. In a technology-driven society where emails and text dominate, it may make someone’s Christmas just to hear your voice and have a conversation. Keep it simple and enjoy being around loved ones and good friends. For more economical tips like the ones mentioned above visit financiallifeconnection.com. by: IAN SMTH
