Keep Your Kids Active This
SUMMER
Experts say that kids need 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day. With childhood obesity on the rise, it’s even more important to keep our kids interested in sports. Keeping these tips in mind could help your children enjoy activity even more. A.) Follow the leader.
Don’t force them to do any activity that they’re not comfortable with. If your child would rather play tag than swim, do it. You’ll both be moving, and having a great time. B.) Diversity matters. Different sports are fun for different kids. Introducing your children to as many activities and sports as you can, will allow
them to discover what they truly like. C.) Scores don’t equal self-worth. Pushing kids to excel could lessen their interest in certain activities. Forget about the score, and let them invent their own goals. The true measure of a successful season for any child is whether they want to play next year.
Bottom line, playing with your together should be your ultimate goal. Plus, your children will be more enthusiastic about physical activities if you lead by example. As the summer heats up, try to devote an hour each evening to being active with your children. Turn off the television and have some quality fun!

Just For Moms: Picking The Perfect Swimsuit For Summer
I
t’s bathing suit season again and while the thought may send some women screaming and running for the hills there is hope in finding the perfect swimsuit to show off your assets. The right swimsuit is a vital staple in your wardrobe and it’s important to remember that swimsuits are not sized like most clothing. In fact, you should try one to two sizes larger than your normal clothing size. Even if you are hesitant to go up a size, don’t get caught up in the number. The right fit is what counts. When you find a suit that you like, lift your arms, bend over, sit down, and walk around to make sure it is not going to gather or ride up. With so many styles of swimsuits on the market, it is important to take note of what works for your body and what does not. For example, when shopping
for a tankini, make sure the stomach portion of the suit lies flat against your stomach but is not too tight. If it is too tight, your stomach will bulge causing more harm than good. And when choosing patterns, remember that vertical stripes are more flattering than horizontal stripes. In fact, striped patterns with different sized lines look the best. BOTTOMS UP When trying on a swimsuit bottom, make sure your skin is not bulging from the waist or leg area. If it does, again, try going up a size. If the problem is still there, consider a different style bottom. In general, a bottom with a leg opening an inch below the hip bone is the most flattering. Remember, bottoms stretch when they get wet. Make sure the bottom fits snug enough where it won’t look droopy when it’s wet. Boy shorts do not disguise

hips, large bums, or large thighs ñ in reality they only accentuate your problem areas. Get a Supportive and Stylish Lift If you are looking for a top with an underwire, it should fit like your best fitting bra. The underwire should lie flat against your skin without any breast sneaking out of the bottom. For most ladies, side cleavage is an issue. Starting at your underarm, æ of the breast should be covered. And for large busts, a halter top or an underwire top provides the best support and coverage. Halter tops with a wider band provide the most support. When it comes to swimsuits, cleavage isn’t everything. Most women like to emphasize their bust, but over-padding is not the answer. Steer clear of large, push-up pads. The foam holds water like a sponge and tends to pull the top down resulting in a saggy look that is not attractive.
If you want to add a little extra padding to your top, choose a thin pad that looks natural. Most pads can be cut to fit any style top. To prevent the pad from slipping, insert the pads into the lining of the top or sew the pads into the top. STYLE & SHAPE SEARCH All of this swimsuit advice can be mind boggling when you are on the hunt for a swimsuit but just keep the following style tips in mind when shopping and trying on swimwear:

HAVE YOU RESORTED TO THIS?

Short Torsos: Vertical stripes or prints will make your body look longer. Long Torsos: High leg-lines and low necklines shorten body length. Stay away from vertical stripes. Hide Your Tummy: Styles that focus the eye in other places are best. Try a printed top with a solid pant. Also, try a one piece that is slimming in the torso or that will move the eyes toward the bust line. Tankinis also work great at hiding your tummy.
3.) When applying oil based sun tan lotions, minimize direct contact with your swimsuit. The oils naturally cause the swimsuit elastics to breakdown. 4.) Hot tubs and highly chlorinated water can cause your swimsuit to fade. Also, these water conditions can cause embellishments to fade or fall off of the suit. Limit your swimsuit’s exposure to hot or highly chlorinated water or wear an older suit in these conditions.

Boy-Shaped Body: Look for styles that create a waist. Avoid plain suits. Small Chest: Bold prints and bold colors always flatter. Bandeau tops only put emphasis on small chests. Large Chest: Support should be your number one concern. Underwire tops will provide the best support. Halter tops, especially ones with a wide band, also provide good support. Stay away from patterns that emphasize the bust. Try a solid top with a printed bottom. Large Hips or Saddle Bags: Draw attention to your top half. Choose styles with vertical stripes, dark slimming colors, or with bust details. Try a solid pant with a printed top. SWMWEAR CARE Once you find the right swimsuit, you want to take extra special care of it. Follow these tips to keep your swimsuit ready all year long: 1.) Always rinse your swimsuit with regular tap water after swimming. You should hand wash your suit with a mild liquid detergent. Some “hand washing” detergents can cause colors to bleed. Mild soaps, such as IvoryÆ, work best. Avoid all chlorine-based bleach products, spot removers, and dry cleaning. Never use bleach and never put your swimsuit in the washing machine! 2.) The best way to dry your suit is to lay it flat in natural air. Never put a swimsuit in the dryer or wring it out!!! Avoid putting your swimsuit away until it is completely dry. If it is stored while still wet, it could become discolored. For the same reason, avoid leaving your wet swimsuit in a bag or wrapped in a damp towel.

Things Your Kids Can Do Instead of Watching the Television
C
’mon, admit it. You sometimes use the television set as a cheap
babysitter. That’s ok...we ALL do it sometimes! Ah, but it’s a double-edged sword, because kids who watch a lot of TV have trouble keeping themselves entertained, which in the long run makes your job harder! If you’re trying to limit the TV viewing in your household, you might need a little inspiration. Try these TV-free activities guaranteed to keep the kids busy... at least for a little while!
1) Design paper airplanes
Warning: This one is highly addictive! Buy them a book on the fine arts of paper airplane making, snuggle up or kick your feet up and read the book together. 2) Tower of Pea-sa Peas are good for something- have fun making a tower using toothpicks and peas. Go ahead- encourage them to play with their food! 3) Make homemade ice cream Put two parts milk and cream and one part sugar in a coffee can, with any flavorings you want. Put the lid on, then put it in a bigger can and pour ice around the little can. Put rock salt on the ice. Put a lid on the big can, and give it to your child to roll it back and forth for about 1/2 hour or until it turns into ice cream! (Do this one even if it’s winter...I won’t tell!) 4) Magnet Treasure Hunt: Give them a magnet and instruct them to run it all over the house and see what they find. 5) Home-Sweet-Castle: If you have bunk beds, put blankets around it and make a castle. Encourage your children to play, use their imagination, and save you from the fire breathing dragon! 6) Play First Family Savings and Loan Save your cancelled checks and fake credit cards that come in the mail. Then, supply the kids with a calculator, pencils, and Monopoly money. Let your child ball out of control as the household billionaire! 7) Build a mini log cabin with twigs 8) Have a tic-tac-toe tournament 9) Make your own soda. Here’s an easy recipe: http://www.easyfunschool.com/article2052.html 10) Make a card for Grandma Get out the rubber stamps, art supplies and construction paper and make a greeting card for Grandma or another loved one. 11) Baketastic! Buy the kids an easy cake or brownie mix and set them free in the kitchen. Tell them they can enjoy the fruits of their labor as long as they clean up the mess immediately afterwards. 12) Dollar Store Scavenger Hunt Buy cheap dollar store toys. Hide in your closet. Make a list of items they must find outside. (A white rock, a feather, a red leaf, a penny, etc) Tell them an exciting booty awaits when they bring all the items to you. 13) Make a cave inside the house Put old blankets over the backs of chairs or over a table to make a tent. Grab a flashlight and instruct child to go read scary stories inside it.

The Caribbean Life
Planning the ideal summer vacation can make or break your summer! Don’t worry, here’s our guide to the Caribbean that will have you relaxing in no time.
Anguilla, the beautiful British island of the Caribbean.
....the most special thing about Anguilla is her people. They are among the warmest in Caribbean and they go all the way to make you feel comfortable and at home
F
or Americans summer has always been the time to go out on holidays and enjoy the beach and the Sun. what could be a better place for that than the Caribbean Islands with their lovely beaches, blue waters and the most pleasant sun. In fact the Caribbean has been such a huge hit with American tourists that today the tourism industry is one of the biggest industries of the place. There are numerous islands in the Caribbean, but some have been all-time favorites with the tourists. The biggest destinations are the islands of Anguilla, Aruba, Bahamas, Curacao and the British Virgin Islands. A visit to any of these islands will leave you with happy memories, you can hardly ever forget. Bahamas Bahamas has always been a very popular destination for the American tourists because of its proximity to the country.
Still having a feel of the British colonial days in its buildings and architecture, the Bahamas is also very tropical in spirit. Known for its beautiful beaches pine forests, Bahamas is the perfect place to sit back and relax. If you are in the Bahamas you should never miss the Rand Nature Center where you get to see the exact recreation of a Lucayan Village, which has everything, from the chieftainís house to the dwelling huts. And if you are a food freak you got to taste the local snacks from a Bahamian straw market. The Atlantis Resort is located on Paradise Island, near Nassau in the formerlyBritish Bahamas just a hop from Florida. The guidebook “Caribbean With Kids” calls the Atlantis on Bahamas “one of the most lavish properties in the entire Caribbean”: which is saying something, considering what the region offers.

the beach. Three towers make up the complex, the Beach, Coral and the newest is Royal Towers. Anguilla
The Caribbean is the perfect getaways for families. Play in the sand and sun as much as you like!
The Atlantis Bahamas grounds have waterfalls, streams, lagoons filled with sea creatures, underwater viewing areas: with 11 exhibit lagoons and 11 million gallons of water, the resort claims it has the “largest marine habitat in the world”. The world’s largest marine habitat, the largest casino in the Bahamas (and the Caribbean), a 15 million dollar marina, lagoons, waterfalls and the underwater ruins of Atlantis itself....Atlantis Bahamas Resort has achieved a distinctive combination of comfort and adventure unlike any other vacation destination. Atlantis on Bahamas is a deluxe high rise with 2300 rooms and casino situated on
One of the best family destinations in the Caribbean, Anguilla is famous for its neat beaches many of which are noncommercial. And of course you have the rare opportunity to share the waters with dolphins in Dolphin FantaSEASone of the biggest attractions of Anguilla. Another place to b e in is Scilly Cay ñ which provides the perfect setting for barbecue and snorkeling. But the most special thing about Anguilla is her people. They are among the warmest in Caribbean and they go all the way to make you feel comfortable and at home Aruba “One Cool Family” is the program organized by the Aruba government to pull in new tourists as well as bring back those who have already been to this lovely island. Such schemes emphasize how important tourism has become in these places and when the government is coming up with such ideas you can rest assure there would be enough effort to provide you with the finest holiday ever. Apart from the exotic beaches and the clear blue seas other attractions of Aruba include Boca Prins, the perfect destination for dune sailing and land sailing. Of course there are arrangements for
the regular activities like snorkeling and scuba diving. Curacao Just two and half hour from Miami, Curacao is unlike any other Caribbean island. Of course it has got the beaches and the lovely seas, but this dominion of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is also special because of its diverse mix of history and culture. The experience you have at Curacao is, in that sense unique among the Caribbean islands. If yours is a family which is into adventure this can be the perfect destination as you can head for the Hato Caves to witness the amazing dry land sea caves complete with underground pools, cave drawings and fossils which date back to millions of years. But if you are more interested in just lying back and enjoying your vacation you can do that too while enjoying the best of Curacao culture that has a strong influence of the Dutch. British Virgin Islands Once a haven for the pirates, the British Virgin Islands is today the perfect place for diving and snorkeling. It also provides you with the very best opportunities to sail. And if you have been a fan of Stevensonís Treasure Island, you can actually see for yourself from where it was inspired ñ the Norman Island. With calm waters, swimming is also one of the favorite activities among tourists.
Just In Case You Decide To Cruise The Most important things when planning a caribbean cruise is understanding the when, where, how, for how long, and definitely the prices. The “where” aspect of your holiday depends on what you would like to see, be it historical sites or water sports. The “how” aspect would most likely be decided by your budget and the type of liner you would prefer. First time sailors might enjoy shorter cruises and they might be able to squeeze in more places in the same amount of time. Find out details about life on board like meal times and whether you have the freedom to adjust your schedules. Some liners have set patterns. Find out the ship’s sailing program if site seeing is your main agenda. Some offer so much on board it takes on a life of its own.
Your budget must cater to tipping, mini site seeing tours conducted by local agencies, overheads, extra fees if you have children, and a small budget for emergencies. Fares can swing from $150 to upward of $1000 depending on what type of accommodation you are looking for. So go ahead enjoy all that nature has to offer in the shape of the Caribbean and come away with an experience never to be forgotten. Most cruises can be booked through local agencies.

Red, White, and Blue: America, our Home. Celebrating our nation’s birthday is about far more than barbecue, homemade ice tea and fireworks. It is our job, as parents to teach and instill in our children what it truly means to be patriotic. Since September 11, 2001 Independence Day for the United States on July 4th has been especially poignant. While there has been a surge in patriotism, we all need to maintain a sense of pride and love for our country whether we are at war or in a time of peace. Children need to feel a sense of belonging too, in their family, their classrooms and in their country. They will thrive in an environment of respect, compassion and stability. If we as parents teach our kids to love, honor, show compassion and respect for their country as well as for their fellow man, they will not only be graced by a sense of patriotism, they will become better citizens, and in turn role models for our future generations. One of our greatest challenges as parents is to raise our children to be honorable and respectful adults. Adopting a path of patriotism is a good reinforcement for them to show honor and a sense of ethics. Our babies learn kindness at first from our gentle touch; they also learn self-esteem
by our praise and respect. They mostly learn these living examples from their parents and at school. We are responsible for teaching them to respect and be kind to others, regardless of our differences. We are also responsible for teaching them to keep their community clean, and to trust that their country will defend and protect them as best it can. I truly believe they should be taught to revere their country’s flag and all it stands for as well. Children should be taught that, while it might be “legal” to burn their country’s flag as an expression of individual freedom, they would be hard-pressed to get this past Mom and Dad if they ever entertained the idea! This is the posture that a good parent should adopt. Children need to know they are a very large and integral part of their country’s make up. They are the future parents and member of government that will uphold the morals and ethics inherited
from their parents and grandparents. Is it too much to ask that our children be patriotic, actively show patriotism, honor their flag, and stand up for what’s right and good about their country? I don’t think so. It is our job to instill a sense of honor and patriotism in their young hearts, offering them the opportunity to love and honor their country and its flag. In doing so, their actions will be seen as a good example for their country to show mankind and the world. As much as we want our children to love their country, we also need to recognize the importance of global relationships in today’s world. Setting good examples of patriotism should, in turn, teach our kids that every person counts, no matter where they live, or who they might be, or what country they represent.

A Tad Bit TOO Shy? Urban Parenting Magazine
Often, as parents we are too quick to label our kids as shy when if fact it could be something much more. Your child could be emotionally withdrawn.
P
arents may not be fully aware of what is happening to their children’s and their everyday activities. After coming home from work, parents usually do some household chores and prepare themselves for dinner, while their kids do their homework after arriving from school. Conversations would usually begin at dinner time, asking them questions about how their day at school was. Kids may share their quirky experiences to their parents, but teenagers would seldom do the same. Adolescents would rather keep the details to themselves, and just share random events from their school. Many parents may be
unaware but high school life may be found by their children to be quite a challenge. Peer acceptance is critical for most teenagers. In campus, they have opportunities to build new friendships. For some teens, school is also about facing up to the difficulties of bullying. Other students from school or even their so called “friends could tease and bully them by saying negative things about them in front of many people. Sadly, this scenario is considered as normal for people their age. At this stage, your children may be emotionally sensitive and choose to remain secretive about the issues and situations that they face in school.
In case one of your children is having difficulty sharing stories, opening up, or is showing symptoms of depression --- that child may be having problems with selfesteem. It is not uncommon for teenagers to experience a form of inferiority complex since the adolescent years are really about establishing self-identity and building their own sense of self-worth. They may also have feelings of resentment, alienation, and unhappiness. These are only some of the reasons why children hesitate to share their experiences to their parents and other adults. For parents who think that their children might be suffering from an inferiority complex, it is best to see and know the signs that your child may be experiencing. Your child knows what they are capable of, as well as their shortcomings. Bullying tends to point such negativity into the young adult, and perceives any form of criticism as a personal

attack. Feeling bad about themselves, they usually have trouble feeling good with anyone else. They look hard for possible flaws and shortcomings of other people to try to convince themselves that they are not so bad after all. Response to flattery can come in two ways: desperate in fishing for compliments, while others may refuse to listen to anything positive since it would be in contrast with their own feelings.
their children deal with it. Guiding children and teenagers in terms of their emotional and psychological growth is critical to the quality of their life.
Another sign is how they project their weaknesses unto others in order to lessen the pain of feeling inferior. If blaming is carried to the extreme, they might think that others are actively seeking to ruin them. People who feel inferior likes to win games, but tend to avoid such situations because deep down, they believe they cannot win. They have beliefs that they themselves are not as interesting as others, and would think that other people would feel the same way about them. These are the most common signs of having inferiority complex, and parents should really take the time to help
In order to overcome such inferiority complex, these young adults should develop a strong sense of determination to change their present mentality. Initially, they would require a little initiative, be daring and should give up their inhibition. Parents should remind them that they do not need to be afraid of any body. Try to develop their positive thinking and make them express their views, in case they do not like anything. Always remember that everyone is unique in this world, and individuality is best in leading a good and happy life.

Swimming Pool Safety for the Summer Be your childrens #1 Superhero by teaching them life-saving water safety
Urban Parenting Magazine
I
f you have a swimming pool and a child, then safety has to be at the top of your priorities. This is especially true if you have a large swimming pool, which should be gated to prevent your little one from wandering into the water. It may also be necessary to place a lock on the gate in order to prevent a child from gaining access to the swimming pool area.
Most small children love to splash around in a kiddie pool, which is very small and made of a strong plastic material. Specially designed for toddlers, these swimming pools are seemingly safe for play. However, if left unat-
tended, any situation can turn into a dangerous one for your child. Therefore, any time that your toddler is in or near a swimming pool, whether big or small, make sure that you are with them. When it comes to swimming pool safety, it is equally as important to maintain the pool’s cleanliness and water quality. Regular maintenance would include sweeping the pool of any debris and possibly even hiring a swimming pool attendant to stop by and make sure that the area is properly cleaned. Every swimming pool needs to have it’s water cleaned and also changed regularly to avoid any bacteria or other harmful buildup. When you or your family are swimming, you want to make sure that the water is as clean as possible. A regular checkup of the swimming pool filter, if you have one, is also a necessary part of this process. An important part of swimming pool safety is also making sure that you or your children wear the proper water attire, including ear plugs to avoid excessive water in the ears and possibly even inflatable safety gear to help stay afloat. If you plan to spend a lot of time outside in the swimming pool, apply sunblock in order to lessen the damaging effects of the sun.
Children can drown in an inch of water, yet parents can prevent water accidents by teaching their children safety steps when playing in or near pools, the beach, lakes, or other areas of water.”
REMEMBER- always use floating devices for kids 5 & under as they learn how to swim.
At the very least, a nasty sunburn can be uncomfortable. In the most severe cases, it may require medication or may eventually lead to skin cancer if exposure continues. In many instances, families prefer to purchase a swimming pool cover in order to keep bugs and debris out of the water. This is helpful, but the water must still be cleaned properly and maintained just as if a cover hadn’t been applied. A swimming pool cover is terrific for overnight use and it will definitely help to keep the bugs at bay.

Fostering Your Child’s Creativity
S
wim lessons and summer camp aren’t the only activities that parents will encourage their kids to take on this summer break. According to mothers of grade-school-aged children surveyed by Urban Parenting’s mommy group more than 78 percent of moms say they feel responsible for fostering their kids’ creativity. Mothers are looking for supplies that help unleash their kids’ creativity, and guess what- the basics are winning out! Parents have shared that items like paint, markers, and even playdough, spark their interest and creativity more than a tablet. So, this summer Parents won’t have to look far in their pursuit for new, easy-to-use arts and crafts for active kids and teens. Products such as Paint Brush Pens work like a marker but include a brush applicator that can mix paint colors and won’t dry out. The thin brush tip allows kids to write or paint with fine lines or broad strokes. Paintastics also put parents’ typical concerns about painting to rest-the paint is contained in the brush, dries instantly and is nontoxic and washable. Now, go wild this summer as you go BACK to the basics! GOOD OLE SUMMER FUN So how can parents foster creativity? It’s all about getting quality time together. A.) Photography classes: Summer is the perfect time to photograph nature. Frame and display the photos or use them as inspiration for a painting or sketch. Get creative with the mediums. Use charcoals, acrylics, pastels, Paintastics or mix mediums. B.) Jazz in the Bay: With good weather comes live music in urban cities, especially at recreational areas like the park or downtown. Check your local city events calendar or orchestra for upcoming performances. C.) Personalized postcards: Make one-of-a-kind postcards on summer road trips with glue sticks, markers, paints, buttons, ribbons, stamps or whatever elicits creativity. D.) Journaling: Create a wonderful memory by having a “Mommy and Me” diary. Design a journal cover and write about the summer together as a family... Enjoy and have fun!
