T

he New Year has dawned. It is now 2012 and we have another 365 days of opportunities ahead of us. For most of us though, a new year invokes a renewed commitment to good intentions and changes for the better. We make a clean slate and employ new energy to accomplish those goals that eluded us last year. New Year's eve and day, have always been my favourite days. The prospect for a fresh start always makes me feel a little giddy with excitement. Amidst the shopping and holiday parties, I tend to squint back at the year gone by. In my mind's booth, I see children growing taller, new destinations travelled, friends moving here and there and so on. I would then stare at the clock on the wall in anticipation of the hands that will strike 12 and bring on the New Year. We all, at the start of each year, have hopes for growth and progression. We make new decisions and introduce new things. In this path, we are proud to present to you the first edition of Urban Royale (UR) - a bi-monthly magazine that intends to unveil and endorse the prominence of south-south Nigeria in the country and world at large. Created to be a trendy, eccentric, entertainment magazine that discusses current events, music, film, fashion and lifestyles; it will showcase the glitz, glamour, pride and beauty of the South- South. I started dreaming of Urban Royale a long time ago. I had noticed that the media mostly portrayed us (South-South) in a 'light' contrary to what we really are. It instilled in me an irrepressible need to show the world that we are as successful, peace loving and kind as any other group. This magazine is not an upshot of prejudice; we are just determined to make the South-South noise a little louder. It is time. With an outstanding team and strict adherence to the high standards in professional journalism, our promise is to deliver the best of in-depth reporting, interviews, up-dates, distinctive blend of astounding photography and all-around entertainment coverage. We could not be more enthusiastic about 2012, and what we can accomplish together. I sincerely hope that you agree that our hard work has paid off and that we have added some joy and inspiration to your new year. As Benjamin Franklin said: "Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you a better man." Have a great Year!

et in the Ijaw-Itsekiri milieu, Bonfires of the gods portrays the horrors, experiences and events that occurred during the Ijaw-Itsekiri ethnic clash of 1997 in the city of Warri, Delta State of Nigeria. 'Bonfires of the gods' is a story

of intense emotion; love and hate, life and death, and a quest for survival in one's own homeland. The story unfolds through the lives of seven people. This novel, true

to its nature, is uniquely African, a beautifully told story, and very quintessentially historical and true to the African experience. It however is not purely Art for life's sake but judging by the simplistic and beautifully intelligent; Andrew Oki proves that he is a true artist, a force of Africa to be reckoned with worldwide. The novel is a beautiful read. It combines elements of modernity of language with the age-old African metaphorical expression of thought to create a wonderful effect. esides being one of the mostphotographed and scrutinized women in Nollywood, Stella Damasus has something else on her side: acclaim. In an exclusive interview, Damasus, talked to Urban Royale about her personal and professional life, as well as the bourgeoning Stella Damasus Arts Foundation. Tell us about yourself.

Do you practice yoga, take pills or have a fitness trainer. What do you do to stay and look fit?

I grew up in Benin City. I spent my early years there, then my family moved to Asaba, where I lived till I moved to Lagos. I am a graduate of creative arts from the University of Lagos. Contrary to people's opinion about me, I am actually very

I don't practise yoga, neither do I take any pills. I'm a workaholic. My brain is awake round the clock, even when I'm sleeping, my mind is imagining and creating things, so I don't have time to lazy about. I try to eat healthy and I drink

reserved. When I am not working on a movie or at an event, I enjoy staying at home watching TV with my kids or just listening to good music in my room. You look really great, have you ever had any surgical beauty enhancements? No.

water a lot. That's basically it. I don't have any special routines. What is an average day for you like? Everyday is different for me. So there's no average or regular day. I'm very spontaneous and I change my mind about different things quickly. I can decide on one thing before I sleep, and by the time I wake up, something else may have cropped up. I leave room for changes and I'm very free-spirited and open to the challenges each day brings. You started acting around 1995, 1996.. Yes. So..what are you doing at the moment?

We have very good movie makers in Nigeria now and nobody wants to be left behind. Everyone wants to make premiere and cinemaworthy movies.

I'm working on graduating the first set of students of my acting and singing school, an offshoot of my foundation(Stella Damasus Arts Foundation). Als, I'm getting ready to audition for the second set of students. I'm also working on some movie projects and the second season of my TV show (The Stella Damasus Show) is in the pipeline too. So, we're keeping busy.

“The Stella Damasus show, what is it all about? What do you intend to achieve by it? The Stella Damasus Show is a dream I carried in my heart for so many years. It actually has 7 different segments to it. One of the segments, "Changing Lives" was first aired on one of the SKY TV channels in the UK and is

currently on AIT every wednesdays and sundays. It is a 30-minute interactive weekly programme designed as a chat show, with myself as the Host and usually one guest per show. The show has drama re-enactment of the topics to be discussed as well as positive lifestyle tips. Tell us more about the stella damasus arts foundation and the workshop on acting, script writing, directing, production and cinematography. I went to Cameroon with my team, some of whom are my friends from the Nigerian movie industry to start helping to build the Cameroon movie industry. We worked with Splash and some other individuals in their industry to train people who actually have the talent but haven't had the right opportunity to express or showcase what they have inside. It was a very humbling and fulfilling experience. You just finished a movieTwo brides and a baby, what was it like? Amazing! I'm really looking forward to the premiere in November. I worked with very skilled and interesting actors and we had so much fun on the set of that movie. I think people will like it. What has been your most challenging role in a movie. All my roles so far have been challenging so far. I try to take on only roles that challenge me and better my skills.

47

Do u have plans of going into producing or directing movies? I produced one(State of the heart) already and I'm currently working on another one with one of Nigeria's best directors. I will be doing more of producing and directing now, actually. What would you say are the challenges facing nollywood? funds‌ and passion. Do you think the government has done well for the arts? Things are getting better. With the advent of films like the figurine, mirror boy etc., would you say that there has been an improvement in the quality of films in Nigeria? Yes, most certainly. We have very good movie makers in Nigeria now and nobody wants to be left behind. Everyone wants to make premiere and cinema-worthy movies. "One minute and more"(the official release of the hit single "get up") with Stella Damasus and Lamboginny..what was it all about? We made that song for the youth. Just something to inspire young people to get up and be all that they are meant to be. Lambo and I have similar passion for the youth and less privileged so we came up with the idea and the response has been great. How did you get into the music industry? Do you see a bigger future for yourself in music? I always say this: I was first a singer before I became an actress. A lot of people still don't know that I sing but I actually enjoy singing more than acting. My style of music is different and I have big dreams concerning the music side of me. I can't reveal anything now, but in due time things will fall in place. Of all the things you do, which do you enjoy the most?

Would you like your daughters to follow your footsteps in the area of acting? I'm not one to force any career on any child. My girls are very open and I'm thankful to God that they're doing great in school. I can only pray, advise and encourage them on whatever path they choose to follow.

What has been the biggest lie the media had written about you that you did not have a chance to rectify publicly? To be honest, there are so many "biggest lies" that I can't even begin to mention. I don't like to cry over spilt milk, so I'd rather leave them in the past where they belong because really, I've grown past media harassment. Any words for your fans? I love all my fans and I thank them immensely for the support they've shown me over the years. I pray

48

You are such a busy mum, how do you find time to spend with your children? I always make out time for them regardless of my tight schedules. We go on regular holidays away from home and when I'm in the country, I make sure I spend some time with them first thing in the morning before school and we're together all evening before they go to bed every night. Its hard only when I'm away for a week or more but I always find ways to make that time up with them.

B

ased on the 535i, the ActiveHybrid 5 marks the third production hybrid from BMW and will be one of only

two on sale. Although it won't be available for purchase until March 2012, the ActiveHybrid 5 joins the ranks. The hybrid system offers all-electric power up to 37 mph and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As you'd expect from BMW, the automaker added a host of other tweaks, both computerized and hardware, to help ensure the hybrid maximizes its efficiency.

HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID

T

alk about extreme luxury and ecofriendliness. Away with Hummer and your fiendish appetite for consuming incredulous

amounts of fuel, cause here glides in the smooth luxurious piece of green technology - the new kid on the block. Unlike usual hybrid systems, the Hyundai hybrid does not use a continuously variable transmission with integrated electic motors and generators. Instead it uses a new sixspeed automatic transmission with an electric motor that takes the place of the torque converter. The Sonata Hybrid technology is awesome for cruises, not yet suited for long distance drives (and maybe disastrous roads) but it is indeed a start of clean, safe and affordable luxury.

UR WORK

Urban Royale recently interviewed the owner of EPHESIANS, a growing business offering upscale clothing to a wide variety of clients throughout Nigeria, to learn a little more about him, his inspirations and his boutique. The Interview is as follows:

UR: Tell us about you. BEN: My name is Ben Uroghide, I was born in Benin city, I grew up there. I subsequently went to UNIPORT where I got a bachelor's degree in accounting. I am happily married, and I have a kid, I am an easy going person, I am quite, and I believe I am someone you could describe as social and very outgoing. That's it basically. UR: What was it life growing up in d south-south? BEN: Growing up in Edo state Benin city, hah! I am very sure I am not alone when I say this, there is this thing we have all come to know about Benin City, it teaches you how to be street smart. Those of us in Edo state pride ourselves in the

knowledge that we are not as dumb as people tend to make us to be. People just cannot walk up to us, smoke up our bottoms and expect us to remain docile or let them walk away. It helps in my kind of business, it comes to the fore when you are a lot smarter than some other people who probably grew up in other parts of the country, not that people from other parts are not smart though.. But, that is what it has done for most of us. Growing up in Benin teaches you to be bold, it prepares you for the world and that has helped me a lot.

UR: How did Ephesians manifest? BEN: Ephesians is something I have always wanted to do. Clothing is something I am very passionate about. I believe it is better to do something you are passionate about, especially when you are sure of getting profit from it too. I love seeing people dress and look good. It started as a pet project for me and so far it has s been good. Like every other business, we had challenges at the start. The process of getting and knowing our manufacturers, gaining their trust

EAT OUR WAY TO A TREMENDOUS SEX LIFE If you want to feel frisky or improve your sex life, then you need to add these five foods into your eating index. Nothing exotic necessary!

Almonds

Any food that's good for the heart is good for the loins because heart-healthy foods keep arteries clear and boost circulation to allow blood, oxygen and nutrients to flow freely. In addition to heart-healthy fat, one ounce of almonds provides 35 percent of your daily vitamin E - another sex hormone booster and powerful antioxidant that prevents arteries from hardening, the top cause of poor blood flow.

Pumpkin Seeds

They are a great source of zinc, which has been shown to boost sex drive by increasing testosterone. Use them as a garnish for just about any dish.

Edamame (Soy beans)

The antioxidants in soy provide natural lubrication for women and are one of the top foods for protecting men's prostates. Soy also helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure (so great for circulation) and one study found that soy compounds may help you look better naked by creating fewer and smaller fat cells.

Wheat Germ

Wheat germ is a good source of arginine, an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels, increasing blood flow to "certain parts" of the body. Arginine is also involved in the production of anti-aging hormones. Wheat germ's nutty flavor makes it a great addition to hot or cold cereal or a fruit smoothie.

Watermelon

In the quest to improve your looks the most natural way ever, you tend to realize that beauty and health go side by side. Healthy people are attractive people

Juicy watermelon contains a natural substance called citrulline, which gets converted into arginine. Watermelon is also rich in the antioxidant lycopene, which keeps men's prostates healthy and it's 92 percent water, so it re-hydrates if things get sweaty!

MOVES THAT MAKE YOU LOOK BAD IN BED

FOR WOMEN

1. Never initiating sex

Do not always rely on your
