MASTER OF IMAGINATION

There’s no doubt that Gustave Doré, is one of the most prodigious artist of the XIX century. His career began when he was 15 years old as caricaturist, later he will be converted in a professional illustrator. He covered all areas of creation: painting, drawing, watercolour, engraving and sculpture, he also covered different genres like the satire and history painting. His creations are known as intimate paintings, flamboyant watercolours, virtuoso washes, and fanciful illustrations. All an ambassador of the European culture, he faced as illustrator, to the principal texts: The Bible, Dante, Rabelais, Perrault, Cervantes, Milton, Shakespeare, Hugo, Balzac, Poe, also, his protagonist is crucial in the contemporary collective imagination, from Van Gogh to Terry Gilliam, without forget his comic book influence. Will also be shown at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa from June 12 until September 14, 2014.
