The TRUTH About Identity Theft Part I By Carlos Davis, The FIRM Marketing Group Remember back in the day when our parents and grandparents would get utilities turned on in their kids’ or grandkids’ name? Our parents and grandparents may not have known it, but they were committing a form of identity theft! According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft strikes nearly 10 million U.S. consumers annually. 15,000 to 20,000 consumers contact the FTC about ID theft each week. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years and thousands of dollars cleaning up the mess the thieves have made of a good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims of identity theft may lose job opportunities, be refused loans for education, housing, or cars, and even get arrested for crimes they didn't commit. Although this crime is not 100% preventable, there are various things you can do to help protect yourself from identity theft:
to drop the mail with payments and personal information at your nearest post office or pay online. If you have wireless internet at your home, protect your connection – If you pay bills or shop online, and you have a wireless network setup at your home, YOU ARE AT RISK OF BEING HACKED! To combat this, have your wireless network secured by encrypting the information that comes across your wireless network. Most wireless routers have simple instructions on how to set this up. For more information, please consult with your internet service provider on how to set this up Invest in a legal service plan for your family - Identity theft is definitely a financial issue, but it is also a LEGAL issue! If an identity thief commits crimes in your name, how would you be able to defend yourself in court? A good legal service plan will be very affordable, and it will give you numerous benefits to help with any life event that may happen, especially if your identity is stolen! Invest in an identity theft protection and restoration service for your family – There are numerous identity theft protection products on the market. The majority of the identity theft products just cover financial identity theft, so you want to make sure that the identity theft protection product you invest in covers all forms of identity theft. You also want to make sure the product you select also has a restoration piece, where the service can restore your identity to the way it was before the identity theft happened.
Shred all ‘junk mail’ you receive that has your personal information on it – One thing that identity thieves are not ashamed to do is ‘dumpster dive’. This is when a person digs through garbage to get any form of personal information. Once they have it, they can use to open credit cards, purchase items, and even commit crimes In part two of this article, I will be sharing the against others in your name! different types of identity theft and how they can When you mail bill payments, don’t put affect you and your family. them at your home’s mailbox – There For more information on the identity theft was a time when people didn’t go through protection and legal service plans discussed in your mailbox at your house. SPOTLIGHT ON …..
Chirl Girl – I am always striving for balance.
Radio’s “Chirl Girl” on Having it All!!!
Your story is truly a unique one. Can you share with our Urban Tymes readers how you both met? We actually met on the phone. He was “Caller #10” when we were doing a “Two for Tuesdays” contest at the station. I was giving away either the 3rd or 4th season of “The Wire” DVD set. He called in and it was just a typical call. There was no flirting. When I asked him for his last name, he said, “Coad,” and I commented that I had not heard that name before. I asked him to spell it and he did. Then two weeks later while I was working out at Tempo on a Sunday night like I always do, a handsome man with long pretty eyelashes walked up to me and said, “I know that you hear this all of the time…I was one of your winners but you probably do not remember me.” So I asked him again what his last name was and he said, “Coad.”
Photographed By William Gordon
Then I said, “I remember talking to you.” From that, we hit it off. Talk about a chance meeting, who would have thought that you would meet your “husband to be” on a random phone call, someone just calling into the station to win something? Now here it is almost two years later and this man is now your husband? Yes…and at the time, he was not flirting when he called and neither was I. When I met him that night at Tempo, he was very handsome, smelled really good and had theses incredible eyes! Even with all of that, I was not looking for a boyfriend or husband, so it was all a big surprise for me. It has been like a fairytale.

Hailing from Salisbury, NC, our very own Carolinian Cheryl Patterson-Coad, is V101.9 FM’s renowned Radio Personality “Chirl Girl.” I often refer to her as the “Hardest Working Woman in Charlotte” and she is aptly so. She not only hosts a daily broadcast radio show from 10AM – 3PM in a major market for a CBS Radio station, she can be seen hosting weekly events around Charlotte, NC such as Jazzy Sundays at Tempo Nightclub and Saturday night dance parties at The Savoy. She also hosts Trendsetter Tuesdays on the third Tuesday of every month at the House of Jazz and can even be seen and heard on regional commercials for major companies like Bojangles. Chirl Girl has worked with some of radio’s biggest names like Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey and has interviewed some of today’s hottest talent. So between all of that, where did she find the time to meet the love of her life and marry Mr. Wade Coad? Chirl Girl and I sat down to have a fun conversation about her fabulous love, marriage and have it all!
You and I have been friends for a long time and when I heard that you were dating this great guy, I could tell that you were happy because your face lit up when you spoke about him. Anyone who spent any time around you could tell that you were beside yourself with happiness. However, when I finally saw you both together, I understood why your union became what it has. You are both perfect for one another. You seem to adDr. Flowers (Interviewer): With everything you mire and take care of each other so well. What have going on in your life, how did you find was it about Wade in particular that made you certain that he was “The One?” time for love?
What has always stood out for me is that he is so funny. He cracks me up and had me laughing since the day we met. Everything is funny to us on some level. We have a good time and he is my friend. I have never experienced a man, who is not only handsome, but we can hangout together. It is like being married to your best friend.
So to clarify, it seems you put your love and respect for one another always at the forefront as a reminder that they are more important than anything that you could be arguing about…is that correct? Absolutely…wouldn’t you hate to lose your best friend over something stupid? I believe that where many couples make the mistake is that they do not work on their friendship or respect it. They begin to take that friendship for granted. We keep our love and friendship as priorities and that takes care of any mess that arises.
In your relationship as well in the marriage, how do you handle conflict? I believe that you have to learn how to do that, just as you would with any friend. We really I know that spirituality don’t disagree on much. is a big part of your If he sees that somerelationship. started to go out, about 3 weeks in I realized that we had actually spent time together every day. At first, it freaked me out and I asked myself, “How did that happen?” However, we were having so much fun, that I did not stop to think about the time. Then about nine months after we met, he asked me to marry him while we were out at Tempo.
stand with him as he popped the BIG question. I was really caught off guard and would have worn a different outfit if I suspected I was being proposed to. [Laughing] Wow…well you certainly had a beautiful wedding and for those of you who missed out, it was a grand one! It was a GREAT event…Fabulous! Of course, Chirl you were such a beautiful bride! Thank you so much. Tell us about your honeymoon. We went to a Bed & Breakfast up the mountains of Gatlinburg, TN. It was so cool! It was a big old mansion, with a fireplace and Jacuzzi tub in the room. They gave us first class service with breakfast made just for us everyday. We did not have to leave the Honeymoon Suite at all if we did not want to. However, we went out to Dollywood to see the Temptations perform and stayed in TN for 3-4 days. Then we went down to Charleston, which is already one of our favorite places to go. We had a good time there as well and tried to eat everything in Charleston. [Laughing]
The whole club was in on it, from the managers to the bartenders, everyone knew accept for me. Wade’s friends started showing up and the band went back on stage. I began wondering, “What is going on?” Then Wade walked on stage and I became more confused. My brain shut off at that point and he just asked me to marry him. It was a lot of fun and I was so surprised! So he definitely popped the question and I was ready when he did! [Laughing] Many women have an idea when the question is coming because guys are bad at keeping secrets. Was it truly a surprise for you? It was, but I noticed that things got weird that night because all of his friends began to show up. We invite all of our friends out with us all the time but that night ALL his friends continued to show up! I thought to myself, “Is it a holiday or something?” Eventually though I thought, “This is fun!” We were having a good time and it did not occur to me that his friends were all there to
Charleston is a beautiful city, I love it. There are many romantic spots. Very, very romantic! In fact, while there, we sat out by the river on a little swing and just swung. It was really sweet. In fact, we are going back to Charleston to celebrate our one-year anniversary this year. It always seems to me as if the honeymoon between both of you never ended. I know from speaking with you often that you are enjoying married life. Tell our readers what it’s like for you to be married now. It’s different! I have been single a very long time and lived alone a long time. It’s nice to know now that when I come home there is someone waiting for me. Companionship is really a beautiful thing. I don’t think I would have enjoyed being married this much if I were not happy with my life prior to marriage. Before marriage I loved my life, I loved my job and I loved my family. Everything was great. It was all good. Then to meet someone and to realize how
much better life could be and what a blessing it truly is. In day-to-day married life, I feel comfortable, I feel safe, I feel happy… companionship is a wonderful thing! [Laughing] So does that mean you are cutting back on all the hard work you are doing around town these days? [Laughing] Not really…I just try to schedule it better. I still love my job and I believe that I have the best job in the world. I love radio, love being on the air and getting out amongst the people. However, now that I am married and God put a blessing in my hand to take care of, I try to schedule my life better so that I am not out every night or every weekend. I also pick assignments that Wade will enjoy and want to attend also. I make certain that I have down time for him, so that just the two of us can spend time enjoying ourselves. Well I have certainly observed the two of you together and know that Wade enjoys being out with you. Often times he is right there with you when you are working at Tempo… just being supportive. It’s more like a “Couples Night Out” and you just happen to be working.
It stems from the type of person that he is, such a good person who makes everything fun. He keeps me laughing and very happy! I would not trade that for anything. You truly have to be able to laugh at some things.
Thank you so much for granting this interview to Urban Tymes Magazine and for allowing us into your life and marriage. We wish It’s great…life is good! [Laughing] It’s a wonder- you and your husband Wade the very best in ful thing! life and longevity in your marriage. If you had to narrow down the thousands of things you love about your husband into one thing that you love the most…what would that be? I would have to go back to his sense of humor. He cracks me up! He is such a good man, such a good dude with such a great sense of humor. I

experiences they was able to help me break free of death and BONDAGE and she finally heard me crying for help and she and the power of God helped me to live again. THIS IS MY STORY BUT, OUR PASSION. I want to help women all over the country break free of this type of bandage. I want to embrace and love them in a way that will inspire them and mend the emptiness that possesses them inside and mend their pains and broken hearts. Everyday I find myself overwhelmed with honor because I started out with 12 models (ages1544) some of whom were broken because of domestic violence issues in their past and some of whom were healed and they supported and encouraged the others. They walked with their heads down and they had very low self esteem. ALL of these ladies (since January 5th our 1st meeting) are women of confidence, standards, class, and ambition. Not to mention every time I see them they are representing and they have found and redefined the worthy lady which lies within them. I was molested as a child, I was raped and sexually abused, I had to fight because men I loved would beat on me, I watched my dad beat my mom sun up to sun down and watched him pull guns out on her and put loaded guns down her throat, I had to stand alone for many years because my family and friends hurt me and talked about me like a dog, I had two children before the age of 18 and my family caste me out not knowing I was rapped, I had to struggle to raise these girls on my own. And I say this because that which was my downfall and what I was most ashamed of has helped me to change the lives of many women and embrace them as well. I HAVE NO REGRETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today I'm happy, I have forgiveness for every individual who has caused me unnecessary pain, I have so much confidence, ambition, purpose and trust me the list goes on and its rubbing off on the people around me. THIS IS OUR PASSION and we are going to continue to embrace the lives of women and children who have been effected and affected by Domestic Violence in this country. organization that was founded June 2009 for women who are victims or off springs of domestic violence. The purpose of our organization is to not only help them get out of the situation but provided them with different survival services and programs to keep them out of domestic violence relationships and encourage and educate them into building healthy relationships in their lives and their communities. For so many years their have been women such as myself that have been dealing with domestic issues but fear prevents them from leaving and establishing a better life for the and their families. THIS IS OUR PASSION..... I must say I was one of the ones who called these women crazy for staying in these types of relationships until I experienced it first hand. I learned that domestic violence goes deeper than someone physically beating own you day and night or raping you and leaving you feeling worthless and feeling as if you have no purpose in this world, or making you think the only way out is to take a bunch of pills that will put you in a deep, deep sleep for a long time and take all of you physical and emotional pain away, it's more than meeting people who want to establish long and healthy relationships with you and your children and you push this person away not because you don't want to be loved or cared for, but because your afraid and constantly reminded of the darkness that you have experienced with domestic violence. it's past "My daddy did it to my mommy, so maybe he loves me too" or " I shouldn't have embarrassed him like that or I shouldn't have made him mad and I provoked him" lingering in your head. Domestic violence is more than the thousands of women who are killed each year and the children who are left motherless at the hands of a angry, bitter, insecure man. IT'S BONDAGE!!!! I cried help, help Embrace Yourself, please someone help me. I was at the bottom of the barrel and because he took my life, he took my self respect, he took my beauty, I was dying. I was living but yet I didn't have the ability to think for myself, I didn't know who to trust, I was confused as to who I was. and reader friendly because it doesn’t seem like it’s preaching about the male ego and its weaknesses, rather it’s a story written from the male point of view as a means to understand men: who they are, how they behave and why they do the things they do. What I found most interesting about this book is the loving, sensitive, and often misunderstood image of men. They are taught early in life to “man up”, “never let anyone see your weakness” and “real men don’t get emotional”. However, the reality is that men are emotional, passionate, loving creatures who are taught and are subjected to stereotypes of what it means to be a real man. Unfortunately they buy into this, with the help of society and the media, and spend a good portion of their lives trying to live up to the hype. I also appreciated the other aspects of not only what men feel, think and need in their lives, but also what women can do to better understand and communicate with them. This book is a quick read that will provide valuable inside into the male psyche. It’s also a testament to the power of faith, the importance of vision, and the important role women play in a man’s life and development. It’s as poignant for men as well as women Ron Roseboro’s debut novel, Is There A Samson In You?, provides an intimate look because it offers answers to deep rooted questions about into the hearts and minds of men. This is a phenomenal book because it goes beyond the expected. The subtitle: An Honest Look Into The Mirror Of Male Bondage, gives you reason to pause. After all, no one wants to think of themselves being in bondage. Truth is, there are different types of bondage, such as physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, etc. There are many people who fall into one or more of those categories within their lifetime. This book provides an in-depth look into the emotional, spiritual and psychological aspects of men and how that is manifested in their behavior, or lack thereof. On Being Oscar Grant By Tai Allen It would be easy to write a scathing, emotional statement. I could fill it with centuries of oppressions and personal tales of police murdering/injuring friends. Rarely is the easy way out the best way in. There is a point in a story, any good story, when a change occurs and new directions are taken. After 400 years of scratching and reopening the same itchy wound, there seems to be nothing moving us beyond this part of the epic. We are repeating ourselves. We meaning the U.S.. We meaning us, all of us. I cannot figure out what is left to say to my kids, my friends, my community or even myself about Oscar Grant. The same way i found no words to comfort an ex-lover who lost her best friends during a botched car-jacking. Similar silence for the kids I coach, after one of our boys was shot in a drive-by last week. My tank is empty.
drug dealing, female objectivity, death et al. I own my foolishness and I own my community's. It is beyond time for those hired, "trained" and recognized as protectors of my community to do the same. Responsiveness and responsibility are hard words to own. No... hard words to bear. They are a burden we stumble with, because the roads we carry them over are arduous. References and metaphors for this could fill a room. However, until the public servants become better at understanding their roles and trained to appreciate the areas under their control this will continue. And, of course there isn't a killing a week. But we have too many, and when they occur the events are fantastic in scale. Men are dying in hails storms. Beaten by half-a-dozen of sticks. Killed cuff and prone. We have gradients for caused death. Understood and agreed. Now legislatures offer a category for death under law enforcement custody. Even injuries are often discovered to have occurred while cuffed or secured. That is not police work, that is secret police work. Gulag. Change. This can all change. Many people are willing too, but too many are afraid to act. Fear, that un-magic word again. And, the source of our internal conflicts, the virus infecting our police and the wall to our getting better. This can and must get better. All scenarios sans positive growth are disastrous.
When does the internal community conversation switch? When does responsibility for actions become a burden for the wrong? And I completely admit emotional dreariness. I keep watching the When does the extinguishing life improperly become not just news, dog died and I feel a way about LeBron. (Yes. You can chuckle illegal and punishable but immoral? here.) Internally we need to fight our struggles with guns and conflict. And I often hear this as an excuse or reason for police fear and violence. Bullshit. Yes, there is rampant crime in the Black/ Latino communities but this does not excuse ill-trained and ill-prepared police officers.

box). When asked why he feels the shirts are so popular, Demetrius said, “Everyone needs something positive to identify with. If you can wear shirts for sports teams and brand labels, why not be as bold and supportive of a company that has shirts expressing positivity and showing what you believe in?” He also says, “The shirts aren’t products to be put on and taken off, but rather are a mindset that the shirts represent. Wealthy Minds is a movement, a part of the culture that is needed in this time. I want to help people develop a wealthy mindset and begin to look past their current circumstances and speak their dreams into existence.” His vision is expanding and he has added three other shirts to the line: “I Don’t Look For Jobs, I Create Them”, which is perfect in these times when layoffs are happening in record numbers, and people are forced to reevaluate their career plans. The second shirt, “I Work For God, Who Do You Work For?” is a cool shirt because it makes you realize how replaceable you are and how temporary employment can be. In these turbulent times when you can have a job one day, and get the pink slip the next, it makes you want to be clear about who you’re working for. The third new shirt, “You Can Never Have Too Much Faith”, is a testament to the one thing that keeps you going when all else fails: faith. Regardless of which religion you practice, you have to believe in something to get you through the rough times in life and matters of the heart. Hebrews 11:1 states, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Oftentimes, it’s challenging to believe in a dream or goal when the present circumstances don’t give you much to hope for. But that’s the essence of developing a wealthy mindset. By exercising faith, and speaking your dreams into existence, you do your part to make them come true. Demetrius is also working on his forthcoming and highly anticipated book, The Billionaire P.A, which will include 366 powerful quotes to cultivate wealthy minds. The quotes on the shirts are from the book, and will serve as an excellent source of marketing and cross promotion for the shirts, book, films and other projects in development, which are all geared to
help people speak their dreams into existence, one quote at a time. MK ~ Urban Connections & Birthday Blessings on September 18, 2010!!! FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS!!! MK ~ Urban Connections is sponsoring a birthday party through Birthday Blessings Organization for the Women and Children of a nearby Domestic Violence Shelter. Home should be a safe haven. Unfortunately, the children of DV victims often get “caught” in the midst of the drama and most often forgotten. The Mary KayÒ Foundation has awarded more than $17.6 million in grant money to shelters for women and children in all 50 states since 2000. Domestic Violence is the No. 1 cause of injury for women ages 15 to 44. These victims suffer emotionally too from depression, anxiety or social isolation. Domestic abuse occurs to women of all ages, income levels and educational backgrounds. Unfortunately, thousands of homes are like war zones each day because of domestic violence (www.marykay.com).
