PERSONAL RENEWAL

Personal Renewal: As spiritual leaders, it is mission-critical that we ground ourselves in spiritual practices so we can lead others in those same practices. The Upper Room invites you to engage in disciplines that nurture your spirit and help you grow in Christlikeness.

Paul challenges us to “present everyone mature in Christ” (Col. 1:28). Becoming like Christ is a lifelong process, not an event. A conversion experience only initiates the process of restoration; it means we have said yes to the direction God already had in mind for us. Spiritual maturing takes time. We often forget that at least 17 years passed between Saul’s conversion on the road to Damascus and the day he wrote his earliest epistle—hardly a sudden transformation.

The Bible makes it clear that the goal of our lives is to become like Christ.

Becoming like Christ is a spiritual practice, a daily discipline, a commitment to continuous conversion. Every day we are called to take off the lingering habits of the old self and put on the ways of a new self that is ours in Christ. But we do not do this by our own power. While Paul counsels us to work out our own salvation “with fear and trembling,” he goes on to say, “it is God who is at work in you, enabling you…” (Phil. 2:12-13). That’s why daily devotions are so important—spiritual progress comes when we make room every day for God to inspire our desire and enable our readiness to live in Christ. —Stephen Bryant, Publisher of The Upper Room

THE UPPER ROOM DISCIPLINES 2019 A Book of Daily Devotions Are you looking for devotions that take you deeper into God’s Word? CHURCHWIDE STUDIES

Churchwide Studies: Churchwide studies encourage intentional spiritual growth for every age group. Creating synergy in the congregation and spurring family conversation, churchwide studies offer a compelling, focused invitation for your congregation to grow in Christlikeness.

“ A life with God is not meant to be a burden. In fact, it’s the opposite. Jesus invites us into a life with God that is light with an easy burden. If you’re feeling heavy or burdened, set down that weight and reset your spiritual rhythm. Step into grace, mercy, and a new start, staying close to the One who will show you the way.” —Junius B. Dotson, General Secretary and CEO of Discipleship Ministries

STUDIES FOR LENT Coming October 2019

WE ARE BELOVED A Lenten Journey with Protestant Prayer Beads Kristen E. Vincent We are beloved, but do we truly believe it? This 6-week study follows stories of Jesus’ experience of God’s love. The incarnate Son of God was made fully human, and Jesus had to fully mature to learn that he was beloved. Just as Jesus learned of his belovedness, we, too, can cultivate the wisdom and knowledge that we are deeply loved. Includes a Leader’s Guide and optional prayer bead experiences. The way many Christians describe Lent, it starts to sound like chores or some spiritual burden. I want us to remember that at the heart of Lenten disciplines is strengthening our relationship with God. The focus is not what we give up or even how many spiritual disciplines we observe. The focus of Lent is joyfully growing our connection with God. —Max O. Vincent, author of Because of This I Rejoice

BECAUSE OF THIS I REJOICE Reading Philippians During Lent Max O. Vincent Many people think of Lent as a season of self-sacrifice. Because of This I Rejoice turns this stereotype of Lent on its head and offers us a new way to experience this important season: through the lens of joy. Join author Max O. Vincent as he walks you through a joy-filled 6-week study of Philippians, and find reasons to rejoice this Lenten season. STUDIES FOR ADVENT Coming September 2019

THE WONDROUS MYSTERY An Upper Room Advent Reader Compiled by Benjamin Howard Advent is a time when we think about the greatest of paradoxes: that God became human, was born as a vulnerable baby and placed in a humble manger, and chose to dwell among us. The Wondrous Mystery compiles readings from The Upper Room’s beloved journal, Weavings, to offer readers a new perspective on the Advent season. This daily Advent reader includes meditations by Barbara Brown Taylor, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Esther de Waal, Walter Wink, Sue Monk Kidd, Wendy M. A MISSIONARY MINDSET What Church Leaders Need to Know to Reach Their Community Lessons from E. Stanley Jones Douglas Ruffle Doug Ruffle writes A Missionary Mindset using the timeless principles of E. Stanley Jones and transfers them for use today. “ To reach our communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ, we need, more than ever before in the Western world, a missionary mindset. Our current context for ministry in the United States feels foreign enough to many church leaders that our role seems a lot like that of a missionary. We are surrounded by a culture estranged from the Christian context that was present 30 or 40 years ago. A Missionary Mindset draws upon the wisdom of E. Stanley Jones and other missionaries to delineate the right way to approach people of different faith traditions and those with no faith tradition. The lessons learned will help guide today’s Christian leaders to reach out to their communities with grace, love, and humility.” —Doug Ruffle

If the church of the twenty-first century is to have men and women following a call, they must know the art of discernment. If God still calls, we all need help in recognizing the divine voice. This guide will be an excellent resource in the discernment process. —Ben Campbell Johnson Author, GodSpeech: Putting Divine Disclosure into Human Words

—Chuck Olsen

Founder, Worshipful-Work, Center for Transforming Religious Leadership

What a fantastic resource for such an essential and foundational practice! In a culture of decision making, this fine resource helps Christians affirm, “Not my will, but thine be done.” Living into the Answers has value not only for individuals but especially for churches that practice a congregational form of government, where direction is more often decided than discerned. —Rick Bennett

Isenhower & Todd

Discernment isn't magic. It isn't passive. Discernment isn't a complicated mystical practice. Rather, it's a process of listening and choosing based on the understanding that God is to be at the center of decision making. The authors explain how to live in a way that satisfies the yearning for a deeper connection with the spiritual. There may not always be one "right" answer because there's no shortcut to knowing which job to take, house to buy, or relationship to pursue. But we don't have to make these decisions alone. As people of faith, we know every aspect of our lives is important to God, who created us for a purpose.

A Workbook for Personal Spiritual Discernment

I had a rich association with Valerie Isenhower and Judith Todd through Worshipful-Work, an ecumenical ministry in spiritual discernment. In this book they have woven together pioneering insights on discernment from that work, complementary spiritual-leadership practices, their own artistic and bliblical flair, and stories on the journey. All these are organized into a practical and usable workbook. Now they offer it to you! This is BIG! Just think of the transforming power of individuals and groups seeking God’s guiding will in their day-to-day lives and callings!

LIVING INTO THE ANSWERS A Workbook for Personal Spiritual Discernment Valerie K. Isenhower and Judith A. Todd

1/23/08

RELIGION/Christian Life/Personal Growth

Valerie K. Isenhower and Judith A. Todd

How can you help your congregation know what God wants them to do? Discernment is a way of sifting priorities and defining a basis for choice. . . . Spiritual discernment is about finding God’s yearning for the direction of our life. It is not a onceand-for-all answer to our questions but a continual seeking for God’s longing as we accept the invitation to live into the abundance God so freely gives us. We can know God’s longing for us more clearly as we become skilled in listening for God and paying attention to the ways God speaks to us. Eventually, as we walk through the process over and over again, discernment becomes a way of life. Our image for the discernment process consists of a series of circles connected in the center by God. A large circle surrounds the series of circles, representing the issue or decision we are focused on. Holy indifference fills the spaces between the circles.
