Biographical Notes > Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1963, Uri Dushy is an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist.
Over the past 3 decades, Uri’s work has been exhibited in numerous national and international institutions, sold in galleries and added to collections both private and corporate. His vibrant urban landscape artworks adorn the streets of over a dozen Israeli cities, where they are permanently displayed. The combination of styles which characterize his works, usually merging and thus naturally constructing his work process, mark his exceptional course in the labyrinth of his highly personal art. 5

Foreword / Uri Dushy > Over the past decades Uri Dushy has been investigating the origins of ar t. In his personal, non-compromising way, he insists upon joining and creating within ar tistic genres unprecedented to him, provocatively challenging, mastering and adopting technical professional production processes. There is a considerable amount of daring – at times bordering on the naive – in the manner by which Uri Dushy copes with the nearly impossible challenges he undertakes. Perhaps in this course of his lies the key to understanding his success in the field of Israeli public art and the international exhibition establishments frequented by his works over the last decades.
Genuine and profound love of the creation process along with true inspiration from both classic and current artwork characterize Uri Dushy’s works. Uri Dushy appreciates beauty and aesthetics, believing that it is his professional responsibility to contribute to their existence in the world. He creates a dialogue with his audience, while capturing them and enabling them to take part in the creative experience.

intended for the eyes of all people, thus contributing to their positive outlook. It can be said that the works reflect a positive inspiration sent from the artist to his audience, which returns the positive energy that contributes to the continuity of the artist’s creation.
Projects that included the urban landscape sculptures took place in over a dozen cities across Israel, among which are Ashkelon, Holon, Uri Dushy’s sculptures consist of five Petach-Tikva, Jerusalem, Rishon Le main series, presented in this book Zion, Ra’anana and more. along with his photo collage works. His magnificent public art works are Each figure is represented as a twocolorful, positive, understandable and dimensional silhouette situated in its
own sculptural environment, a base of stone or a variety of other materials, upon which it plays out its role in the narrative. The three dimensional bronze sculptures make up the fourth series. The added dimension enriches the figures with nuances which don’t exist in the two-dimensional works. There is an element of freshness in the altered use he makes of the daily and realistic symbols he chooses. The virtual sculpture project,“Status”, presents the fifth series which includes 2 meter high mixed media figures that expose their extreme emotional states while conducting a dialogue with classical sculpting theories. Uri Dushy’s photo collage works have created a new artistic language. Combining details of various segments of urban reality within the framework of one picture enables to refer to specific places and events with which Dushy becomes acquainted. Parallel to his Israeli career, Uri Dushy exhibited in one-man exhibitions around the world and participated in numerous group exhibitions and international art projects. Uri Dushy has made a double move: returning the sculpting back to the human figure, while sculpting nonheroic figures, as his figures are taken from daily life.Yet, he does this in an up to date language, using industrial metal and two-dimensional sculpting-a language relatively unfamiliar. 7

The works were to integrate with landscaped areas, while adding sculptural and colorful dimensions to the existing beauty in these regions. During my impression tours of the area, my attention was drawn to the “sculpted” forms of the trees, the natural texture they create, and the
stories they seemed to hold within them. Thus, the trees in the areas where the sculptures were to be sited served as an inspiration for both the shape and the story within each sculpture. In this series of sculptures the tree, a motif towards which I feel

Sculptural works in Be’er Sheba, a city surrounded by desert in southern Israel, were created during the year 2008. 30
The challenge of sculpting for this unique urban space was dealt with by specifically relating to the desert surroundings and the arid climate in the region. The sculptures selected present nearsurrealistic situations, many of which are contrary to the local climate:
figures with an umbrella in a desert, rainy street scenes, etc. These seemingly misplaced scenes achieve integration in a humorous manner due to their contradiction with the local ambiance.

While planning the works, consideration had to be given to the fact that pedestrian movement is rare along this route and that viewers in passing motor vehicles would be exposed to the sculptures for a brief time only. Therefore, the message had to be conveyed in a minimalistic manner and using bright colors to ensure that the sculptures would be seen and their message understood during that brief exposure. In addition, the works were to integrate with the new landscaping plan both in terms of sizes and colors. 48
Along the traffic island, which is about 5 km in length, 24 sculptures of figures in motion were created, depicting various urban situations. The average size of each sculpture is 2.50 meters high by 3.0 meters long. The works are placed along the axis in numerous themebased clusters, their positions having been determined in collaboration with the landscape designer. The sculptures are especially noticeable on the green landscaped background in which their presence is highlighted under the various lighting conditions. 49

In 2009, the Municipality of Ra’anana (a city in central Israel) launched a renovation project in the central axis of the city - Ahuza Street. This axis is the commercial and social center of the city, accommodating most of the city’s shops, cultural centers and the City Hall. During the renovation roadside pavements along the shops were restored; bike paths were added, as well as new urban furniture and landscaping. As part of the process, protective separators were built along the bike paths, with the sidewalk on one side and the bike paths on the other. On these separators the landscape architects created three platforms on which sculptures were designed to be placed. The Municipality published a tender and chose my work out of the 12 finalists. > 50

The sculpture garden, in which works by a number of Israel artists are on display, was established in 2006. The sculpture is an integrated element of the garden’s unique design, in which the works are viewed from walking trails, thus
allowing observation of the various statuary from multiple directions. The special layout of the garden required consideration in the planning stage as well as the positioning of the sculpture.

Status Virtual Sculptures Tel Aviv
The Virtual Sculpture Project positions a series of twometer high, mixed-media sculptures in an urban environment and examines their presence and their statement in the context of the urban landscape. The sculptures have been virtually placed in various locations around the city of Tel Aviv. The urban surroundings of each sculpture serve as contemporary backgrounds, thereby positioning the sculptures as integral elements of the day-to-day reality in which we conduct our lives. The internal and external images of the figures are presented in mixed media, maintaining a dialogue with classical sculpting, which places the human body in the center of its environment. This dialogue with classical sculpting, based on the expression of emotional restraint, subordination to the ideal of beauty and the plastic harmony of the body, is articulated in this series of sculptures by way of contradictory statements. On the one hand, the presence of the restrained person is emphasized, while, on the other hand, the emotional pain is highlighted through a series of symbolic patterns exuding from within the body of each sculpture.

The metal sculptures display figures in scenes which have been removed from the completed narrative - similar to taking leave of the material from which they were formed - leading the viewer to complete the figure’s story using his own imagination.
76
Like movie characters acting in a broad story script, the figures stand a midst the new space in which they are exhibited. Each figure is represented as a twodimensional silhouette situated in its own sculptural environment, a base of stone or a variety of other materials, upon which it plays out its role in the narrative.

The animation-like movement, which advances along the sculpture’s space, presents a narrative image situated in different urban environments. The story unfolds over the sculpture like freezeframes of a process in motion, examining with grace and forgiveness the mood of the figures and the environment’s influence on them. The figures are presented in various situations; in hasty motion or calm and peaceful, emphasizing different states of mind in urban life and in general. The narrative background of the wall sculptures alternates between locations which are presented during rush hour (in which the figures are racing against time) to pastoral settings in which nature is accessible and the tempo of life is leisurely. The sculptures appear to be floating on the wall, thus allowing the shadows created on the wall to add another dimension of depth, which varies according to the lighting in which they are displayed.

As with the twodimensional metal sculptures, the bronze sculptures display figures in motion, which are part of a larger plot. Here, too, the figures have been removed from the complete scene, and are presented as a single frame without sequence, such that the viewer is invited to fill the gaps using his imagination. However, the added dimension of the bronze sculptures enriches the figures with nuances which don’t exist in the two-dimensional works. As a result of this added dimension, the bronze figures are more realistic and seem closer to life. They contain additional details which enable the sculpture to more thoroughly express the nature of the character. The example that comes to mind is that of a short story rewritten into a novel, rich in details and depth which did not appear in the original short story. The metal sculptures can be seen as a single frame from the short story, while the bronze sculptures present a frozen motion from the detailed novel. Urban Landscape 2, mixed media on board, 2010, 120x80 cm
The photo collage works were inspired by urban reality as experienced in the pulse of a modern city, and by the exposure to the never-ending dynamic stream of visual information absorbed by the viewer. 106
The works were the outcome of an intensive photography session in New York City. The viewer is overwhelmed by photographic information nearly impossible to digest, thus reflecting the visual cacophony to which we are constantly exposed nowadays. The everchanging images in the urban environment, consisting of unlimited forms of media photography, video, lighting effects,
