EXPLORING THE VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE OF KERALA: DESIGNING A PERFORMING ARTS INSTITUTE AT ERNAKULAM

THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO PROVIDE SPACES WITH FORMS, FUNCTIONS & PROMOTION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERFORMING ARTS.

Performing arts has well-placed status in the culture and tradition of Indian society, Indian performing arts are well-acclaimed by people across the globe. Based on the Nava rasas or the nine basic emotions. The Indian performing arts exist. The four major groups of performing arts in India are dance, music, theatre and film.

The study is aimed to give a platform for learning and promotion of some curated performing arts of southern India by making an appropriate environment for all the activities which will cater to the tourism of the state, especially of southern India by designing an institute for them. The main objective is also to develop an understanding of elements essential in the design process which reflect the vernacular architecture of Kerala.

This creates an appropriate environment for the activities which in turn will cater to the tourism of the state providing that there will be workshops and various performances and leisure activities, to make a combination of different trends of the southern classical art form of India, to achieve this few case studies are conducted to understand built context, response to the climate, physical conditions and the type of spaces required and lastly the project ends with a description of the proposed program with a depiction of the studies done for gaining the most required need for the site and the context of the same.

ABOUT KERALA?

Kerala is a state on the southwestern Malabar coast of India and it has been a preferred destination of discerning travellers from all over the world who preferred culture, heritage, and traditions in the fields of arts, the large number of visitors who come to Kerala and the locals as well as enjoy the rich traditional art forms kathakali, koodiyanttom etc.

Kerala has its own typical art forms which reflect the life and outlook of the people. The renowned Kathakali is considered to be the complete art form as it synthesis all that is best in the fields of drama, music, and dance. For ages, the rich & vibrant culture of Kerala has intrigued people worldwide of Kerala lay in the cultural heritage of its people.

WHY THIS SITE ONLY?

This site is an appropriate raising of the centre by reason of its location situated in lush greenery surrounded by the kadambrayar river of kizhakkambalam Ernakulam district. It has a peaceful, calm environment and also has an educational institute in the nearby surrounding & the site is near to all kind of transport facility etc. and also the authority is planning to develop the site and surrounding as a major tourist place it is initiative by kadambrayer management council

WHY ERNAKULAM NEEDS A PERFORMING ART KNOWLEDGE CENTRE?

Ernakulam is the arts and cultural heritage of southern India, and so to protect its values, Importance of cultural, and classical arts, and vocals, in our heritage and to promote itself as a cultural hub for propagation and preservation of Kerala's ethnic classical arts, ancient costumes etc and props it needs a cultural & performing art knowledge centre.

Location : Kizhakkambalam, Ernakulam. NEIGHBORS

On the north side of the site, it has a residential area, on the south side it has the kadambrayar river, on the east side of the side it is mostly vegetation, & on the west side, there is a instate and eco-tourism station.

Access

The site has vehicular & pedestrian access from one side of side.

Topography

The site is predominantly flat with a slight slope towards the kadambayer river.

Climate Data

The temperature range is relatively 33’C to 22’C.

The city of Ernakulam features a humid tropical climate since the region lies in the southwestern coastal state of Kerala the climate is tropical, with only minor differences in temperature between day & night as well as over the year.

BUILDING TYPES & ARCHITECTURE CHARACTERISTIC

The building is built around a central open-tosky courtyard which provides light & ventilation. The courtyard in traditional Kerala architecture commonly features a pond/pool of water. Which helps to cool the built-form by continuous evaporation.

The roofline projects out to shade the wall from rain and sun and also creates large shadows perverting direct sunlight on the walls of the built form.

Kerala architecture is one of the most exciting examples of the preservation of the vernacular style.

The climate of Kerala greatly influenced traditional architecture. The material used is stone, timber, clay, masonry etc.
