SPIDER fOOTBHl 1965 l The 1965 University of Richmond football squad encountered a rebuilding season marked by strong competition, continuous injuries , and lack of victory . The first game at Morgantown, against West Virginia, was a strong indication of the season that was to follow as UR was put down 56 -0, but Richmond looked somewhat more impressive in its first home game wh ile bowing 25-7 to VPI. In their annual trip to the deep South, the Spiders found things hospitable everywhere except on the gridiron where they came out on the short end of a 28-7 contest at Southern Mississippi . In the next three games Richmond played well against good football teams while suffering heavily fro minjuries . The Pirates of East Carolina sank UR as they scored 34 points to Richmond 's 13. In the next game Buffalo bulled its way for three touchdowns and a field goal to stop the Spiders 24 -0 . A week later , New England proved equally cold as UR fell prey to the powerful Boston College Eagles by 38-7. The last four games, all against Southern Conference foes, proved to be no cure for the ailing Spiders . The Bulldogs of the Citadel d isplayed sharp teeth in spoiling UR's Homecoming by handing them their seventh straight loss, 24-0. VMI 21-14 and Furman 14-0 followed suit by outlasting creditable Richmond efforts . In the final game William and Mary exhauseted the Richmond de fense and won 21-0 .

The Spiders opened their 1965 season at Morgantown, West Virginia in l 00 degrees of heat . Like the weather, the Mountaineers were unbearable as they rolled up 56-0 . The combination of prospects Leftridge, Ford, and McCune in the WVU backfield was virtually unbelievable as the Mountaineers totaled 458 yards and eight touchdowns. Richmond started off on the wrong foot and stayed that way while West Virginia could seemingly do no wrong . The only bright spots of the game for the Spiders were the running of fullback Doug Davis and the kicking of sophomore Mike Bragg who punted eight times for an average of 41 .8 yards per kick.
VPI turns back UR 25-7 The Gobblers put 7 points on the scoreboard with less than 12 seconds having elapsed in the opening quarter of play and went on to thwart a gamely Richmond effort. When the game was over, Tech had won by a margin of three touchdowns, but a close look at the statistics reveals a different story. Richmond equalled Tech in first downs and outdistanced the Hokies on the ground with 129 yards rushing . The lone UR touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from quarterback Jan Linn to end Ed Kullaf. The Spiders missed the opportunity to score again and close within reasonable striking distance late in the final quarter.

SPIDERS felled by SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 28-7
I Bob Solomon, Guard
Ray Tate, Guard Co-Captain All Southern Conference
Richmond startled a crowd of some 10,000 at Hattiesburg, Mississippi, by scoring a drive of 73 yards to score first with 1: 17 left in the first quarter . Starting from its own 29 UR moved on the ground to the 39, then swept into Southern territory on a 20-yard pass play from quarterback Larry Shotwell to receiver Ed Kullaf . Another pass by Shotwell for 8 yards, a series of short ground gains, and a couple of 5-yard penalties against the Southerners kept the drive alive. A 9-yard keeper by Shotwell put the ball on the two, and Ron Gordon banged across from there . From that point on, however, Southern Mississippi kept control of the ball and the game.
EAST CAROLI NA 34, RICHMOND 13 With 28 seconds having expired in the second quarter, Jan Linn fired a pass to Ed Kulaff for 28 yards and a touchdown. Another conversion by Mike Bragg tied the score at 7-7 . The Spiders made a good showing via the air route as the two Richmond field generals combined for 178 yards. However, the flashy single wing utilized by the Carolinians proved most difficult to defend, and ECC exploited the leaky Spider web for 28 points and a victory . UR managed another touchdown eary in the fourth quarter .
BUFFALO BILLS over UR 24-0 The University of Buffalo contained the Richmond offense and exploited a young Spider pass defense to hand the Spiders their fifth consecutive loss of the season . The services of Co-Captain Ron Gordon were sorely missed as Richmond surrendered a first period field goal, two second quarter touchdowns, and a third in the closing minutes of the third period, while Richmond's deepest drive was to the Buffalo 15. On the ensuing plays, however, Shotwell was pushed back to the 28, and on the fourth down a long pass was intercepted . Coach Merrick attributed the poor running game to a lack of blocking, but the passing combination of Shotwell and junior end Dennis Phelps was successful in completing several passes.

BOSTON COLLEGE downs RICHMOND 38-7 The University of Richmond found itself outmanned and outweighed as the Boston College Eagles were victorious at Boston before a homecoming crowd of approximately 30,000 partisans . The Spiders drew f irst blood with 2 :21 showing on the clock in the f irst quarter. Bob White intercepted a BC screen pass and sprinted 32 yards for 6 points . Boston came back to make it 12-7 at half-time . Eagle strength began to manifest itself in the second half wh ile the UR offense could not click. Boston College finished with 38 points . Cornerback Dave Shreibfeder was a highlight in the Spider effort as he made 8 unassisted tackles and 7 more with the help of teammates .
CITADEL spoils HOMECOMING 24-0 The Citadel d rill squad which performed during intermission was outshone only by Citadel football players a s t he Bulldogs scored 21 points in the second half and traveled home with a 24-0 victory. A blocked punt an d 3 fumbles were costly to the Spiders, but, nonetheless, t here were some happy notes taken by Spider partisans . Don Matthews showed considerable poise in gaining 40 yar ds rushing. The defensive work of La rry Pew made many happy that he would return for another season a t UR. He intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble, and made 7 unassisted tackles. Mike Bragg continued to improve his average while booting punts of 73, 53, and 73 yards. Late in the final period Richmond had a chance to avert a shut-out when the Spiders advanced the ball to the Citadel 1 yard line, but again they made unable to cash in on their position.
VMI 21, RICHMOND 14 Richmond's greatest prob I em against the Keydets was a pass defense hampered by injuries to regular secondorymen Rick Payne, Jim McKenno, and Ronnie Grubbs . "We were ploying linebackers back there," Merrick said. The Spiders flirted with victory, but could not quite make it. They scored first when Lorry Shotwell hit his prime target, Ed Kullof, with a 30-yord poss on the VMI 7 yard marker . Kullof evaded his defenders and stepped into the end zone untouched . After the Keydets took the lead, the Spiders continued to fight until the end . Throwing mostly to ends Ed Kullok and junior Dennis Phelps and halfback Donnie Matthews, Shotwell completed 10 passes for 129 yards . The second touchdown come on a 3-yord pass to Phelps. Bragg converted for both extra points.
FURMAN outlasts UR 14-0 The Purple Paladins of Furman University led by quarterback Sam Wyche and fullback Bob Buzzell proved too strong for Richmond's Spiders at Greenville, South Carolina. The Spiders continued to improve, but, as during earlier games of the season, the Richmonders were not able to combine a steady offense with their defensive effort . The defensive unit ployed to its potential and was spirited by the action of Lorry Pew. The junior defensive specialist mode 14 unassisted tackles, and for his performance was nominated for national lineman of the week by the notion's college football writers . Defensive ends continued their consisent hard hitting as did Iinebocker Ron Gordon.
SPIDERS defeated

W& M 21-0 Richmond had nothing to be ashamed of following its effort against Wil liam and Mary in the 74th renewal of the nation's second oldest college football rivalry . UR entered the game without a victory and rated a three-touchdown underdog, but defeat was by no means conceded until the final gun ended the game . A crowd of 11,000 watched Richmond out-battle the Indians, while trailing 7-0, for the first three per iods . Although the Indians finally broke a spirited Richmond team in the fourth quarter to secure a 21-0 victory, the outcome might easily have been different, since W&M led only by 7-0 at the end of the first half . Led by Larry Zunich's 91 yards rushing, the Spiders outrushed and outpunted the Indians in totaling 217 yards . Richmon's downfall lay in its failure to score after penetrating the Indian 10 on two occasions.

RICHmona BHSKETBHLL 1965 The University of Richmond basketball squad completed its most successful and satisfying season in seven years . While posting a 12-13 record, the UR cagers continued to show dividends as a result of the MillsCatlett rebuilding program . Key victories over Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, VMI, West Virginia, and William and Mary gave Richmond renewed prominence on the state and conference levels. Having jumped from ninth to sixth in 1964-65, the Spiders again ascended the Southern Conference ladder to fourth position with a 9-7 conference record . From an individual outlook, Richmond again won its share of the honors with three players chosen for Conference acclaim. Junior Captain, Johnny Moates, averaging 20 points per game broke the university single season scoring record with 50 l points, and became the third Richmond man in as many seasons to make the All-Southern Conference team . A sharpshooting Pennsylvanian, Spike Welsh became a member of the elite 1,000 point club and received second team All-Conference honors for his balanced playing while averaging 19.5 points per game. Tom Green, the "Bristol Blade," pulled down l 0 rebounds a game and averaged 15.8 to ,earn AllSouthern Conference honorable mention . In the season's opener against George Washington University, Harvey Roberts with 27 points and Tom Green who bagged 24 points and pulled down 20 rebounds gave UR a l 03-84 conference victory. The Spiders continued to look strong on the road in a come-from-behind victory against VMI. Though trailing by as many as 20 poins, the Richmond roundballers led by Johnny Moates' 27 points came back strongly in the second half to clinch its second victory in as many attempts . Moates and Welsh poured in a total of 37 points, but the road was a little too rough with North Carolina winning the next game 127-76.

The Spider's were never pushed by Furman's Paladins and led by as many as 19 . The final score read Richmond 92 Furman 83 . Richmond was listed among the nation's top twenty basketball teams after turning in a near perfect roundball performance in UVa's new coliseum, winning 89-69. The Richmond-West Virginia rivalry brought out 7,000 Mountaineer fans to see a pair of near equal basketball quintets . Welsh and Moates pounded away from outside for 43 points while Buster Batts and Tom Green handled the backboards, but Ron Williams and the home court advantage proved too much for Richmond and West Virginia handed UR its first conference loss, 95-85 . Richmond invaded St. Francis of Pennsylvania. The rough and tumble contest saw the lead change 17 times, but Richmond came out on the short end of an 83-78 decision. The home folks again tasted victory when the Spiders came home with Spike Welsh netting 31 points against the Bui ldogs of Citadel who were defeated l 00-86 .
After Christmas the local quintet found that bad ball handling and tall opposition did not spell victory, and Marshall University prevailed over UR 118-103 . In the next game 4,200 local fans saw AllAmerican candidate, Dick Snyder, in top form with 38 points to lead Davidson's prominent Wildcats to an impressive Southern Conference basketball victory . VPI looked the part of a national power while dominating Richmond throughout the game, 88-73, in a "Big Five" contest at Blacksburg . The Spiders, however, jumped back into the win column against GW, 106-93 . North Carolina again proved inhospitable when Richmond tangled with the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville upsetting Richmond 76-72 . The home court and VMI continued to be friendly as the local boys again scored over 100 points . Welsh had 27, Moates 23, and Batts 19 in a 103-88 decision. Blow gymnasium in Williamsbug turned out to be its usual hex, and the University of Richmond continued its losing streak on the road. The Indians won the game 71-65.
163
The boys at Kentucky Wesleyan lived up to their state's basketball reputation and hit the 100 point mark for the third consecutive time handing UR a 100-85 setback . The VPI Hokies provided ample inspiration for the Mills Men to stage a stunning 82-81 victory over NIT bound VPI. This was UR's first victory over Tech since 1960-61. The road once again came to plague the Richmonders as they dropped three straight Southern Conference tilts . At Citadel UR went down 88-70. In Greenville, South Carolina, against Furman the Red and Blue committed 31 fouls and lost the game at the charity stripe, 98-96. In the third game the Spiders staged a commendable effort, but the Davidson Wildcats held on in the final minutes for an 80-7 4 triumph . Richmond next returned home, and West Virginia galloped into town riding high on a upset victory over the second ranked Blue Devils of Duke University . Just as against VPI, Green and Moates worked the give-andgo which ended the game on Moates' twisting lay-up . The students went wild carrying Coach Mills and his team off the floor .
East Carolina became Richmond's next victim when UR notched their eighth conference victory, 100-88 . The final game of the regular season with William and Mary provided Richmond an opportunity to win the Virginia Big Five Crown, and the Spiders put on quite a show beating the Indians 76-63, for its first state championship since 1957-58 . Having finished the regular season with a 9-7 conference record and fourth place, UR was matched against East Carolina in the opening round of the post-season conference tourney. This gave Coach Lewis Mills his first tournament victory since arriving at the University, 76-7 4 . The victory sent the Spiders against regular season champ, Davidson, in the semi-finals the next night. Spike Welsh ended a brilliant career with a 19 point effort giving him 1,023 total points in his three campaigns at Richmond, and was awarded second team All-Tournament honors, but Snyder and the Wildcats made UR its victim 84-65 in route to the championship.

The University of Richmond baseball Spiders wi II attempt to improve on last season's second place Southern Conference finish. This year's pitching hopes will rest mainly on the hurling of junior Winston Blenchstone . The remainder of the mo1Jnd corps will include Dick "Lefty" Dickinson, Dick Balderson, Mike Hughes, and Tommy Johnson . The infield appears to be quite solid both offensively and defensively . AllSouthern second baseman Ritchie Sharff will return along with his double-play partner Frank Jenness at shortstop. Dutch Halbleib will play third base . Tom Green, Jim Cliborne, and Robin Worth will battle for a position as the Spider first sacker . A strong-armed power hitter, Randy Hash , will again roam centerfield and will be flanked on the left and right by Ray Kearney, Jim McKenna, Louis Carro, and Jack Hellems, who will be cometing for the open outfield spots . Jim Bush and Emory Maiden both experienced and proven catchers behind the plate will add positively to the UR diamond attack .

VHRSITY TRHCK Coach Fred Hardy's track team will continue to win as they have during the past two seasons despite tough competition from schools in the Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, and Southern Conferences. During the early meets of the indoor season UR looked extremely impressive in the sprints as Bob Crute took first place in the 220 yard dash and second in the 100 yard dash in the 13th Annual University of Chicago Track Club Indoor Invitational. Crute also took a first in the 50 yard dash at the JCC Indoor Invitational. The mile relay team with captain Richard Elliott, Al Saville, George Wood, and Bob Crute will be one of the fastest in the East as evidenced by their victory over Duke, UNC, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Maryland, Georgia, South Carolina, and Clemson at the VMI Indoor Relays, Richmond will also be strong in the 440 relay with sprinters Rod Cambden, Don Everett, Bob Crute, and Richard Elliott. The high hurdles will be a good event for UR with Don Everett and George Wood finishing close to 15 seconds. George Wood will also be in the 300 yard intermediate hurdles along with Tom Winfrey and Frank Atkins. The Spiders led by Bruce Soderstrom will be stronger in the weights and field events than in past seasons. Soderstrom will carry the load of scori-ng in the shot put, discus, and javelin, but will receive considerable aid from Bill Ronemus in the shot and Randy Michaux (freshman Southern Conference champion) in the javelin.

CROSS counTRY TRHCK The University of Richmond cross country team met competition from VMI, Randolph Macon College, Old Dominion, Bridgewater, Washington & Lee, East Carolina, and Mount Saint Mary's; and from an objective standpoint concluded a successful season. The object of this year's season was centered on developing two or three badly needed long distance runners for the coming indoor and outdoor track seasons. It is felt by the track department that Garnett Ryland and Bill Viglione may satisfactorily fulfill this need as a result of this year's cross country season . In addition, the cross country meets provided an opportunity for trockmen Richard Elliott, Allen Saville, and Fred Hardy to remain in good condition. Other cross country competitors included Chuck Patterson and Richard Howe along with the veterans Jim Cheney, Chuck Louthan, and Paul Hagenmueller . The Spiders closed the season with a surprising victory over the harriers from Mount Saint Mary's College .

1ÂŁnn1s Tennis will continue to improve at the University of Richmond as it did last season when the Spiders won four matches . Coach Leonard McNeal assisted by Coleman Yeatts will have more material in fac ing a season which includes a prized invitation to a major college tournament held in Washington, D. C., during the Cherry Blossom Festival. The squad will be captained by senior letterman Bob Bayliss from Richmond who will lead a young but experienced team against several state and Southern Conference opponents. Other positions wi 11 be fi Iled by the able and seasoned lettermen John McGinty, Sandy Tucker, and Butch Cohen who are all juniors. Thus, with four of the six starting single spots filled, Stan Brock, Pete Wyeth, Charlie . Glisson, Bob Newine, John Campbell, and Mike Fehl will be attempting to gain the two open spots. Three teams for doubles competition will also be selected, which most likely, but not necessarily, will be composed of the same men who represent the Spiders in singles competition. Interest, both local and student, in UR tennis will also improve, since the Southern Conference tourna ment will be held on Richmond's home courts .
