From our Student Artist TRANSFORMING PHYSICAL FORMS TO DIGITAL ARTS

LOV E YO U, T H A N K YO U, S E E YO U BY Y U W EI LI N Queer abstraction has long been used as a method to express the subject matter that is not publicly acknowledged. However, as David J. Getsy, Goldabelle McComb Distinguished Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, said, “sometimes we need radical visibility. Sometimes we need art that speaks to histories of trauma directly.” With this installation being both intimate and public, it provides the audience a chance to share empathy with those encrypted experiences and people.

Last year, I created an installation with 10 panels of papers to reflect a personal diary recording different stages of understanding my queer identity. I started with a romantic experience and moved on to self-questioning and self-reconciliation. The rectangular shape of the installation created an ambivalent space that worshipped both distance and interaction. The more I interacted with it, the more integrated I feel with the space; but as other people interacted with it, the more remote I feel within myself. Utilizing public spaces to generate an intimate experience has helped me relieve myself and continue to explore my identity in the future. Redesigning my installation in a digital form opens up possibilities for me to express energies and emotions other than identity. The process of transforming physical forms to digital arts, and transforming queer love to universal love shows how art inhabits norms differently and how these approaches create possibilities for our community to appreciate different stories.” —YUWEI LIN, VMAP ’20 PHOTOGRAPHY FROM 2019 STUDENT SYMPOSIUM BY KIM LEE SCHMIDT
