Designing Learning Environments requires a design team that understands that College and University buildings are dynamic, multi-functional facilities which must balance the current programmatic requirements with flexibility for the future. Student spaces, teaching environments and faculty and staff offices all must work in concert to support the goals of higher education. Today’s students are different from previous generations. Universities are competing for enrollment within a decreasing demographic of student. In order to attract today’s students, buildings must be much more student centered than in the past. Common areas need to be warm and inviting and should be Wi-Fi CyberCafes as appealing to students as a Starbucks™ or Panera™. Younger generations are masters of multi-tasking and are much more inclined to teaming than previous generations. Interaction and collaboration are central to the success of contemporary teaching environments.

The incorporation of “bumping spaces” provides an opportunity for informal learning both student-tostudent and professor-to-student. Student areas should also provide the opportunity for students to work individually as well as within a group. A well planned project will assist in the attraction and retention of top faculty members. Well-designed classrooms accommodate a variety of teaching styles. Current technology affords the opportunity to create various styles of learning environments which foster teamwork, stimulate inquiry and enhance retention. Our team considers the design goals of creating a cohesive architectural language, facilitating wayfinding and creating an accessible, inclusive design. Designing sustainable, environmentally conscious facilities is paramount. Additional planning concepts incorporate providing opportunities for display and optimizing adjacencies. Materials and furnishings specified must be durable and able to withstand high use / high abuse of University environments. Every element considered must be maintainable, cleanable, replaceable and able to accommodate a wide range of individuals and maximizing safety. The design team considers all criteria to determine value relative to cost and the warranties of all items utilized. In addition, URS is a leader in LEED design; in fact, Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently recognized URS as the #1 Green Design firm. URS embraces the belief and understanding that green design is not a concept, it is the basis of design on all projects.

Science Center, west point, ny Working closely with the USACE, New York District, the URS team planned and designed the major renovation of 337,000 sq. ft. at a construction cost of $206M to create a state-of-the-art science center at the United States Military Academy (USMA). This extensive project is being completed in two phases of design and construction. Phase I, which is now complete and occupied, which was a conversion of the majority of the 112,450 sq. ft. of former library space into wet and dry laboratory space for research and teaching. Phase II, currently under construction, includes the modernization and renovation of existing laboratory space as well as teaching, administrative and building support areas totaling 217,297 sq. ft. This complex project involved the following unique technical issues: preservation of buildings in one of the Nation’s most prestigious historic districts; creating additional space and ceiling height within the existing building envelope; seismic analysis and upgrade; structural vibration isolation required to support sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance, laser and photonic accelerator equipment; blast analysis and protective design; progressive collapse mitigation; DoD ATFP criteria compliance; creating modern laboratory space within historic facilities; exterior and interior ADA access improvements; LEED Gold design with extensive energy and water conservation measures; and PACES (parametric) and MII Cost Estimating, Phasing and Scheduling. USACE systems used on this complex project include: MII, SPECSINTACT and DrChecks.

Miami University Student Apartment Housing, oxford, oh

Student Housing, oxford, oh URS as the A/E of Record was selected to provide professional architectural, engineering and commissioning services for the design of Miami University’s new $30 million Student Apartment Housing Facility. This housing was constructed on the site previously occupied by Miami Manor. The four, two floor Miami Manor housing units were removed from the site and, as much as practical and following LEED guidelines, their materials were recycled. This deconstruction allowed the new housing project to occupy almost the entire site south of the Recreation Center. The development of this site was intended not only to house students, but also to establish an “edge” to the south side of the campus. Overall, this design was residential in scale, yet established a southern edge, as well as an entrance to the campus. The Student Apartment Housing project includes six, three-story apartment-style buildings, each with eighteen, four-bedroom units. The project now provides housing for 432 students. Each unit includes four bedrooms, two baths, a complete kitchen and a living room. In addition to the living units, the project provide for a one-story Community Building that serves as a mailroom, advisor’s office, manager’s office and a social / meeting space. Upon completion, this project will fit nicely into the overall master plan of the University.

Secchia Center, grand rapids, mi This new 184,000 sq. ft., eight-story medical school is a key component of the Michigan Street Development, and sited on Grand Rapids’ renowned “Medical Mile.” The College represents a new model for the medical school - with partnerships and synergy developed with the other entities that compose the “Medical Mile” Spectrum Health, the Van Andel Research Institute, and a host of private physician partners. The $87 million Secchia Center is expected to have a spectacular influence on the economy and culture of greater Grand Rapids. In its first ten years, the facility is projected to increase regional economic activity by $1.57 billion. The school also ramps up the city’s intellectual capital by recruiting research scientists, faculty members, and bright young students from around the world. It’s expected to incubate and attract new business ventures that aim to translate groundbreaking discoveries in life science and biotechnology into lucrative new products and treatments.

Ohio University Bush Hall Renovations, athens, oh

Bush Hall, athens, oh Bush Hall, located on the East Green of the Athens Campus was completed in 1954. The four-story, 31,752 sq. ft. residence hall is currently home to 130 coed students. A complete building renovation is currently taking place updating all building systems including window replacement, interiors and finishes. This will be the sixth complete building renovation on the East Green and the first LEED Silver residence hall. The design language has been developed and this renovation will follow the character of the previous residence hall renovations at OU. Within the building there will be student gathering space, study space, student rooms, shared bathrooms and offices. The building infrastructure renovation will include: plumbing, HVAC-4 pipe system, fire alarm, fire suppression system, secondary electrical distribution and access control at exterior entrances. These new spaces were designed to meet the ever changing needs of Ohio University students while maintaining OU’s rich history.

Columbia University Campus Improvements, new york, new york

Campus Improvements, new york, ny For more than 12 years, URS served as an extension to the staff of Columbia University’s Facilities Management Department. Originally conceived as a 5-year $550 million capital program on this Ivy League’s Morningside campus in New York City, Columbia eventually implemented a second capital program through 2004 with a total value of $1.4 billion. Recognizing the need to supplement its existing forces with professional program and project managers, Columbia retained URS to assist in this campuswide program that would include construction of new campus buildings and major renovations. The work was performed on a year-round operational campus, in an urban area serving almost 25,000 students, and over 9,000 university employees while preserving the historic neoclassical campus. These projects were critical to maintaining Columbia’s position as one of the world’s top academic and research institutions. The capital program was divided into three types of work – major renovations and new buildings, renovations/adaptive-reuse of 1900’s buildings, and replacement/enhancement of campus infrastructure. The major renovations and new buildings for both academic and residential functions range between $15-60 million and spanned over several years with independent schedules. Renovations to the early campus buildings cost between $20-40 million and were coordinated for construction during the summer breaks. Improvements to the aging 1900’s campus infrastructure were necessary to support today’s advancements in laboratory equipment, audio-visual technologies, and environmental controls.

Fairmont State, fairmont, wv Fairmont State University, with a 120 acre main campus in Fairmont, is part of the state’s growing high technology corridor. With a long history of academic excellence, FSU is a place where teaching and learning matter and students are the University’s first priority. Over the past decade, the main campus has been expanded with new construction including an Engineering Technology Building, Student Center, Parking Garage, Improved Library Facility and significant ADA accessibility improvements. As a part of the campus improvements, URS was selected to provide Architectural Design, Space Planning and Interior Design services for Fairmont State University’s new 400-bed College Apartment Building.

Corporate College East, warrrensville heights, oh

URS provided architectural/engineering services for Cuyahoga Community College’s Corporate College East in Warrensville Heights. Designed to meet the needs of business on the east side of Cleveland, URS aided college officials on the most efficient means of constructing the new facility. Corporate College East is a new 95,000 square foot corporate college facility for Cuyahoga Community College. URS has worked closely with Cuyahoga Community College to understand and help develop this new program that will couple as a high-tech educational facility for the corporate world and provide satellite college opportunities to the public. This project was awarded the 2004 Merit Award from the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture.

Purdue University Wayne T. and Mary T. Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology, west lafayette, indiana

Hockmeyer Hall, west lafayette, in Hockmeyer Hall, a key part of Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke’s vision for a “Discovery Park”, is devoted to the field of Structural Biology. The 67,000 sq ft facility employs the most recent technologies of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray Diffraction, Ultra-high resolution Electron Microscopy, Molecular Crystallization, Protein Production, Cell and Virus Culture and BSL3 laboratories in a modular, wet-bench laboratory environment. Hockmeyer Hall, along with an adjacent building, form a new gateway to the Park when approached from the south, which is enhanced by a harmonious visual relationship between the two new buildings and supporting landscape features. The design concept for Hockmeyer “peels” and curves the office section of the building away from the three-story, rectangular research lab space. A lobby and a courtyard fill the resulting void. Materials chosen for the building - red brick and metal panels - bridge campus tradition with the contemporary architecture of Discovery Park. Great care was taken to keep the most sensitive activities in the building safe and away from possible sources of interference. Vibration sensitivity and electromagnetic interference issues are being addressed, as are special security considerations. As the primary A/E, URS’ services included project management; architectural production; structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services; and cost estimating.

Housing Redevelopment, athens, oh or this engagement, Ohio University selected URS as the A/E of Record to provide professional architectural design for the multi-phase housing expansion plan, including the site planning for the entire 10 year plan, and the provision of design drawings and specifications for the implementation of specific projects as the University is ready to proceed with each individual phase. At this time the University is ready to proceed with implementation drawings and specifications for Phase 1 upon completion of the conceptual site plan. With the expectation of the new administrative rules being available to support the new construction reform approved by the legislature, the University is considering utilizing Construction Manager at Risk as the project delivery method and will contract with the selected architectural and engineering team to develop the appropriate documents to reach a Guarantee Maximum Price. There is a possibility of early site and foundation packages that will follow a design/bid/build method. The University desires to maintain flexibility in construction delivery methods used in any of the phases throughout the project. The consultant fees be assessed in relation to the economy of scale for the construction delivery method(s) chosen.

University of Akron New Classroom and Office Building for the College of Arts & Sciences, akron, ohio • 125,000 Sq. Ft. - New Build • $17M Total Project Cost • Completed 2002


College of Arts & Sciences, akron, oh URS provided architectural, interior design, engineering and landscape services for a new 125,000 square foot academic building to house six existing departments. The building, which includes offices for staff, classrooms, and soils and computer laboratories, is critical to the new image of the campus in that it establishes a more collegial architectural vocabulary to be reflected in future buildings along the campus green. Located on a former parking lot near the center of the campus, the new building frames both the new “green” and accommodates, on its site, a potential expansion of the main library facility. Interiors for the new classroom building combine monumental public spaces with small individual spaces for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students that create many levels of human interaction and foster learning. Two classroom and office wings are anchored around an atrium space that brings the outside in through the use of flooring and wall materials, plus large expanses of vertical glass and skylights for daylighting. Loose seating is provided for flexible use of the space. In the north wing, the curved glass wall introduces manageable natural light, window treatments (blinds) are used. Natural light has been shown to increase students’ ability to learn as well as increase employee productivity. The distance learning classroom, designed as a technological showcase, is a model for additional classrooms on campus.

SUNY AERTC, stony brook, ny URS provided construction management services for this new state-of-the-art facility. The Advanced Energy Research & Technology Center (AERTC) is a world leader in innovative research & development. Since many companies in the region need to be on the leading edge of energy innovation, requiring a substantial investment in research and development, AERTC was created to bridge the gap by utilizing its own faculty and PhD students, who are already involved in fostering regional enterprise and commercialization. This state of the art building boasts LEED Platinum Certification and houses facilities for new and expanded research and educational programs, far beyond the laboratory space currently devoted to research and development for Energy providers and Industrial Corporations. The state-of-the-art, two-story, 42,000 sq. ft. facility is the second structure to be built on Stony Brook’s new 245-acre Research and Development Campus. It houses new and expanded research and educational programs for the University as well as partnership programs with private incubator companies. Energy technology developed at the Center focuses on innovative energy research, education and technology deployment with a focus on efficiency, conservation, renewable energy and nanotechnology applications for new and novel sources of energy., Stony Brook envisions that the research and innovations at the AERTC will continue to contribute to these markets and establish its place as a worldwide leader in energy technology.

SUNY Old Westbury, old westbury, li URS provided construction management services for the construction of a new $54 million, 5-story, 150,000 sq. ft. academic building and demolition of existing space. The new building is the main classroom and faculty office center on the campus and is located on a site to the southwest of the existing Campus Center complex. The new building replaced existing space in Buildings A, B, C, and D in the Academic Village complex. The building includes 53 new classrooms and seminar rooms, along with 185 faculty offices, secretarial and meeting spaces. The building is of steel frame construction clad with masonry and curtain wall. It includes a new mechanical penthouse, which is connected to the existing campus mechanical room, a new student lounge wing and main lecture hall. The project included a $6.7 million upgrade to the existing Heat/Chill equipment in the adjacent Campus Center mechanical room, which services both the existing space and the new building. Additional scope of work included site improvements, including ADA access, an improved piping network for the existing campus, as well as security upgrades, which were coordinated with SUNY’s requirements. During pre-construction, URS provided estimating, constructability reviews and value engineering. During construction, URS provided overall project management including coordinating over 30 subcontractors and eight consultant, daily inspection of work, identification of issues in need of resolution and providing solutions, and review of submittals.

Graduate Student Housing, columbus, oh

URS, as the A/E of Record, led the team that was selected to provide professional architectural design, interior design and related engineering services for the new Graduate and Professional Student Housing complex at The Ohio State University’s main campus in Columbus, Ohio. The project provides a mix of efficiencies and one, two and four bedroom apartments, including necessary support spaces, such as administrative offices, laundry facility, meeting rooms and resident parking for non-married, graduate and professional students, undergraduate upperclass and undergraduate scholars program students. The project provides living accommodations and amenities for 393 graduate and upperclass students and 96 scholars program students. In addition to the residential program elements, this project provides approximately 7,000 sq. ft. of leasable retail space along Neil Avenue. The mission of the project was to provide high-quality, affordable, University-owned living accommodations for graduate and scholars students within walking distance to most classes. Beyond providing living space, this project endeavored to create a residential student community that enhances students’ academic experience and strengthens their connection with The Ohio State University. The living arrangements create perceptually small student communities that share common study, support and outdoor spaces. This project also strived to create a positive connection between the University and the existing residential neighborhood.

B. Thomas Golisano Center for Integrated Science, Niagara, NY In October of 2103 Niagara University opened the doors on the new B. Thomas Golisano Center for Integrated Science. Niagara University needed to update its current science department to attract and educate top science students, as well as excite the interest of non-science major students, retain current energetic teaching/research staff, bring in more teaching/research staff and aid in obtaining additional research grants. URS teamed with Research Facilities Design (RFD) to provide complete services to Niagara University to assist in obtaining their goal. The BTG Center for Integrated Science houses an expanded science department, creates a new gateway to the University and establishes the campus landscape vocabulary. The design responds to the character of the campus and illustrates a high technology facility.

It is “science on display”. It was important to keep green design elements at the forefront of planning. URS explored elements such as direct daylighting, thermal mass wall systems, double wall systems, rain water collection systems, green roofs, positioning of the building, green materials, geothermal energy, and multiple energy saving mechanical and electrical systems. The new science center was broken down into separately articulated wings joined by light filled two story atrium. The “Laboratory wing” consisted of classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, prep areas, NMR, computer rooms, collaborative break-out space, open space for posters and miscellaneous functions. The “Administration wing” contains offices, library, conference space and support space.

Tiffin University Recreation Center and Field House (Heminger Center), Tiffin, OH URS provided planning, assessment, grant writing, architectural and engineering services to Tiffin University areas adjoining the western edge of the main campus including the re-use of an adjoining 10-acre junk yard, the expansion of their athletic complex, and a linking trail for students.

Recreation Center: The project included a new indoor 120,000 sq ft varsity NCAA Division II track, indoor field sport areas, tennis and volleyball courts, practice facilities for soccer, football, baseball and also a location for future varsity sport activities. Site facilities included visitor bus pull in area, separate employee parking, service entrance drive, emergency access for fire department and raingardens for stormwater remediation.

New Student Dormitories: URS provided assessment, grant writing, master planning and civil engineering for the addition of four new student center buildings on a former junk yard. The buildings were designed in conjunction with the new western gateway formed by the new Recreation Center.

The facility is planned to meet LEED Silver criteria, and demonstrate through its construction and operation sustainable design practices. The location was remediated from a brownfield site through Clean Ohio, and will demonstrate such green features as rain garden, bioswales, and native plantings, and will help to anchor the

Nature Preserve and Athletic Complex Addition: The project resulted in formation of a 30-acre preserve, including two acres of wetland restoration for flood storage, a high quality forested wetland pool complex, a 1-mile recreational trail/ cross country trail, three bridges, rough grading for an outdoor track, a practice soccer field and a small public access parking lot.

School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH URS has recently completed a two-phase 10,000-sq. ft. renovation for the Cleveland Center for Membrane and Structural Biology for Case Western Reserve University. A research center in the Department of Pharmacology which specializes in the use of Cryogenic Electron Microscopy (EM) was looking to expand. URS scope included full laboratory planning and design, M/E/P design and construction observation. The project was to be completed in two phases. The first being a renovation of an existing 4,000-sq. ft. NMR facility. The program was designed for the installation of two FEI electronic microscopes, with room for the installation of three addition microscopes. Phase 1 also included support space, offices and a dark

Phase 2 of the project would be the conversion a 6,000sq. ft. dry laboratory space to wet laboratory space for the production of protein to be used for the work in the microscopes and at the NMR laboratory. The program for the second phase included a computer lab, cold room, tissue culture and autoclave facilities. Plus space for the installation of a new JOEL electron microscope.

Health Technology Center, Cuyahoga Community College Cleveland, OH The Health Career Technology building is the first project realized after the completion of the Cuyahoga Community College East Master Plan. It is a model for best practices in site and building sustainability.

A light filled atrium serves as the main circulation spine connecting the health careers program suites. Entrance to the building is enhanced by the drama of looking down the spacious atrium.

Based on an interactive effort between Cuyahoga Community College and URS, several design criteria were defined:

The atrium provides interactive spaces for all building occupants. Creation of collaborative spaces was stated as a major goal during the programming and design process.

Building Program - Functionality of the academic programs shaped the design.

All classrooms and laboratories will be equipped with the current technology such as cameras and flat screen monitors, human patient simulators and health information management systems.
