Diversity and Communication: Discussing (Almost) Anything With (Almost) Anyone
NEW! Do you sometimes feel as though you can’t speak up because you’re afraid of offending someone? Our backgrounds are so different it seems most communication takes place across cultural lines and barriers. Yet we probably suffer more from what goes unsaid than from what is spoken. Learning how to craft communication regarding potentially explosive issues is vital to healthy communities and families. It’s important to examine personal assumptions and boundaries and learn how to explore others’ histories and experiences. This year is like no other. The presidential election has opened dialogues on fascinating and sensitive issues such as race, gender, age, economic standing, education, religion, and job status. Join the discussion in a comfortable classroom environment, using carefully established communication guidelines. Everyone can learn how to discuss previously “forbidden” topics with both skill and positive intentions, in order for all to be enlightened and enriched through greater understanding. Achieve Superior Credit
FINANCIAL TOPICS
Build Wealth Faster by Investing in Your Debt
Are you on track to achieve the kind of lifestyle and retirement you truly desire? Are you getting ahead as fast as you want? If you answered no, you are not alone. According to the Social Security Board, only 3% of Americans are financially independent at age 65. That means conventional financial strategies are failing the other 97% of the population! Why not consider an alternative approach? This seminar teaches practical, powerful and proven strategies that will allow you to take complete control of your finances, once and for all; eliminate all your consumer debt - credit cards, car loans, etc in just one to four years; then eliminate your 30 year mortgage in another three to five years; save more than $100,000 in scheduled interest payments; and accumulate savings at the same time! How much would your quality of life improve if you had no mortgage payments, no credit card payments, and no debt whatsoever? Attend this seminar and you will wonder no more! This seminar is strictly educational. No investments, business opportunities or get-rich-quick schemes will be promoted or sold. Tuition includes a workbook. The optional textbook, Invest in Your Debt, will be available to purchase from the instructor for $47.
NEW! If past credit issues are preventing you from moving forward toward your financial goals, this workshop is a must! In today’s society, your FICO score is used for a lot more than just granting credit, so achieving and maintaining superior credit is more important than ever. Learn simple but powerful strategies that anyone can use to build positive credit and overcome derogatory entries in your credit file. Topics include understanding the factors that determine your FICO score, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, how Credit Bureaus operate and why paying off old collections will NOT improve your credit. Your instructor, Greg Frank, is a Personal Financial Fitness Trainer, published author and the owner of Superior Credit Care. Since 1997 Mr. Frank has taught thousands of seminar attendees how to accomplish their financial goals by eliminating their debt and improving their credit. As an educator, Mr. Frank does not sell any financial planning, investment or insurance products. Students have the option of purchasing the book “Achieve Superior Credit” from the instructor ($49).

FALL 2008 THINK AGAIN
Diversity in Philanthropy & Fundraising
Nonprofit organizations are embracing diversity as a mission and orgaization value. They are seeking to tap into the economic growth and power of Hispanics, African Americans, Asian Americans and other diverse population groups. There is an assumption of "one size fits all." Diverse groups have identifiable, valuable and significant philanthropic characteristics and traits. Therefore fundraisers find that in order to be successful, they must tailor their fundraising appeals to the prospective donors' customs and sensibilities because US traditional models and expectations of charitable giving don’t reflect philanthropy in other cultures. To not acknowledge, work with and tap into diversity in U.S. populations is to ignore much potential of income for nonprofit organizations. In the 21st century the philanthropy of diverse populations is likely to have a substantial influence on traditional philanthropic institutions. There will be a break for lunch. What an interesting, eclectic group - shy or ebullient, cosmopolitan or country-bred, healthy or infirm, wealthy or poor, well-educated or unschooled, ambitious or passive. Each lady was an individual with her own story which shall be told here, starting with Martha Washington, the first “first lady” who set an example of dedication, duty and responsibility that has served as an inspiration to all of the first ladies who have followed her shining example. The course will be led by presidential historian William Clotworthy, author of Homes of the First Ladies. Dates: Mondays, October 20 – November 3 Time: 7-9 p.m. CRN: HIS108.16 Fee: $79 Instructor: William Clotworthy, Presidential author and historian
